How Isabella Crosbie Found Her Voice Through Artistic Swimming

A 14-year-old trains like an elite athlete, then goes back to Year 9 homework. That’s the reality for Isabella “Bella” Crosbie, an artistic swimmer (formerly synchronised swimming) on the 2026 Australian Youth Training Squad, and it’s only half the story. We talk with Bella and her mum, Carissa, about what a real training week looks like, from club sessions and high performance hours to the unglamorous nightly stretching and strength work that builds results over time. If you’ve ever wondered how artistic swimming athletes prepare, Bella breaks down the land work, the “land routine” practice, and the mindset that keeps her consistent. Carissa takes us back to the beginning, when Bella was so shy she avoided school performances and needed a teacher beside her just to participate. Sport became a confidence plan before it became a high performance pathway. We explore how team culture, coaching support, and friendships helped Bella move from fear to excitement, including a remarkable twist where she met a “cousin” through the sport and discovered they really were family. It’s a candid look at youth sport psychology, confidence building, and managing competition nerves when the stakes keep rising. Then we get honest about athlete funding and the price families pay to keep Olympic dreams alive. With interstate travel for Australian Institute of Sport camps in Canberra, national championships, and international competition, costs escalate fast. Carissa shares what it takes to fund the dream while working full-time, volunteering, fundraising, and even running a dog-sitting side hustle, plus how programs like the Aussie Athlete Fund and Elevate 32 help athletes learn sponsorship, social media, and storytelling skills. Gymnast Clay Mason Stephens Demonstrates the Ultimate Generosity of Spirit

A gymnast with one pectoral muscle, six knee surgeries, and a career that refuses to follow the usual timeline does not just “push through.” Clay Mason Stephens shows what it really looks like to adapt, rebuild, and choose the hard path with clear eyes. We talk with Clay and his Mum Louise about Poland syndrome, the brutal psychology of comparison during puberty, and the difference supportive parenting can make when a kid is determined to chase an elite sport dream. We also get practical about men’s artistic gymnastics: the six apparatus, how specialisation happens, and why being an all-round athlete turns training into a constant time-management puzzle. Clay opens up about repeated ACL injuries, the rehab grind, and the mindset shift that helped him climb out of a dark COVID period while stranded in the US. His most important metric changes from perfect outcomes to something harder and more sustainable: self-trust built by showing up, and a promise to keep the sport fun enough to be worth the price. Then we zoom out to the often-unspoken side of athlete life: money. Clay explains the financial pressure of training 30+ hours a week, why working a full day can be genuinely dangerous in gymnastics, and how scholarships and side work shape real decisions. We also explore generosity as a performance value, from giving up a Commonwealth Games high bar final spot so a teammate could medal, to trekking in Nepal and fundraising nearly $40,000 for earthquake-resilient classrooms with the Reach for Nepal Foundation. If you care about Australian sport funding, athlete wellbeing, injury recovery, and building a life bigger than results, this conversation stays with you. We sit down with Olympian heptathlete Tori West to unpack what it takes to build a “dream heptathlon” while balancing real-life costs, work, and travel. We also follow her leap from regional sport in Townsville to a Swiss training camp, plus why she is building sports tech to give athletes control of their own data. • how heptathlon scoring works and why personal bests tell the real story • the psychology of event order across two days of competition • growing up in Townsville, being shy, and finding confidence through boxing • funding a sporting dream through stacked jobs, side hustles, and brutal schedules • moving to Brisbane for an Olympic-level coaching environment and long-term growth • building a company that helps athletes and coaches use training data better • the future of athlete data ownership, consent, verification, and athlete passports • setting big goals for the Commonwealth Games and staying grounded under pressure • giving back to regional sport and supporting athletes at every level To get involved, please visit our website at www.aussieathletfund.com and choose your impact. Jackson Macdonald Explains What Separates A Rider From A Racer

A 14-year-old Australian rider earns a place at the Honda Racing School in Japan, and suddenly the dream gets real: new countries, older competitors, higher speeds, and a price tag most people never see. We sit down with Jackson Macdonald and his dad Glen to trace the exact steps that moved Jackson from early racing in Australia to international starts, age exemptions, and a fast-forming MotoGP pathway that now runs through Spain, Japan, and iconic tracks like Phillip Island. Jackson shares the clearest performance lesson we have heard in a while: there’s a difference between a rider and a racer. We get into how he studies qualifying footage, lap times, and competitor strengths to build a passing plan, plus how technique actually works when you’re leaned over with knee down and trying to turn the bike efficiently. Glen adds the behind-the-scenes structure: choosing the right coaches, learning from Spain’s road racing “heartland,” and building a home training setup that lets Jackson repeat the same drills without living on a plane. Then we talk about the part that can’t be separated from elite sport, especially motorsport: money and logistics. Glen explains what it means to close a business during travel, why junior racing is often unpaid, and how support can swing from strong donor years to nothing at all. We also unpack how the Aussie Athlete Fund helps families build real-world skills in communication, fundraising, marketing, and presenting young athletes professionally, so talent has a fighting chance to keep moving forward. If you care about athlete development, junior motorsport, homeschooling for elite athletes, or the true cost of chasing MotoGP, this story will stick with you. How Two Women Built Athlete Funding That Works: AAF Founder Natalie Cook & CAN Fund Creator Jane Roos launch into it!

We sit down with CAN Fund founder Jane Roos to talk about the real cost of representing your country and why “showing up” is the most practical form of belief you can give an athlete. We connect Jane’s origin story and fundraising philosophy to why we built the Aussie Athlete Fund and how we can stop normalising pay to play sport. • Jane’s life-changing car accident and the mindset shift that follows • The early CAN Fund fundraiser and how small actions create ripple effects • Why athletes have “no plan B” and why they bring a country together • Donor journeys that work: invitation-based asks and meaningful touchpoints • The anger behind pay to play and why the system still persists • Creativity in fundraising: experiences, community events and supporters jerseys • Art as impact: Jane’s “Who We Are” national canvas concept • Reframing donations as “gifting time” and building belief To get involved please visit our website at www.aussieathfund.com and choose your impact. Ashlee Daunt's Teenage Sailing Hobby Has Now Become An Olympic Family Dream

What does it really take to chase Olympic sailing as a sibling team when boats, sails, and travel chew through your budget before you hit the start line? We sit down with Australian sailor Ashlee Daunt to unpack the organized chaos behind a mixed 470 campaign with her brother Brayden—how they split roles, handle conflict, and keep the long game in view from LA 2028 to Brisbane 2032. Ashlee shares how a late start at 14 turned into freedom on the water, quick progress in the 29er, and a smart move into the 470 where size, skill, and strategy suit their build. She leads tactics and the main; Brayden drives power on the wire, trims, and keeps the boat flat and fast. Together they navigate regatta pressure, a steep 470 learning curve, and the reality that true crew flow can take up to a decade. That means patience, systems, and communication when fatigue and noise threaten to fracture decisions mid-race. We also zoom out to the money. European regattas taught them more than speed; they revealed the actual cost of competing with the world’s best. Ashlee, an accountant, owns the budget, logistics, and fundraising while Brayden handles boat work—an approach that keeps the bow pointed forward without burning out. With support from the Aussie Athlete Fund, their club, and family, they’re building recurring backing through sponsors and patrons to fund the runway that high performance demands. Their mum, Kerri, offers a moving perspective on raising a “trio,” stepping back, and cheering for two kids who turned a school sport into a national dream. From Diving Rejection to Canoe Champion: Caitlyn Bowell's Resilience in the Water

What does it take to keep chasing an Olympic dream when everything seems stacked against you? For Caitlyn Bowell, a 26-year-old sprint canoe champion, it means refusing to take no for an answer—even when that "no" came from her diving coach who arbitrarily decided she was "too old" at just 19. With a background as a champion gymnast and diver, Caitlyn's pivot to canoe kayak began with a literal splash—falling into bull shark-infested waters on her first attempt to balance in the skinny craft. But that inauspicious beginning was just the first of many obstacles she would face. From moving across the country to train in a program that suddenly folded, to purchasing a secondhand "old man boat" too large for her frame, to training completely alone without coaching guidance, Caitlyn's journey embodies the extraordinary resilience required of Australian athletes chasing green and gold glory. The emotional core of this episode lies in the beautiful relationship between Caitlyn and her mother Jane (affectionately nicknamed "the Jane Train" for her fierce advocacy). When the family recently lost all their belongings to water damage, creating further financial strain, their mutual support and unwavering belief in each other shines through. As Jane shares through tears, "I don't know what it is, but I just know that you were destined for greatness and destined to go there." Hope emerges at the episode's conclusion as Caitlyn connects with a Rio Olympian coach establishing a program on the Sunshine Coast—potentially marking a turning point in her journey toward LA 2028. Her story powerfully illustrates why the Aussie Athlete Fund's mission is so crucial: ensuring athletes don't have to sacrifice everything just for the honor of representing Australia. Connect with these inspiring stories by following the podcast and visiting aussieathletefund.com to discover how you can support athletes like Caitlin who give so much while asking for so little in return. 22: From Gymnast to World Champion Diver: Maggie Grey's Olympic Quest

Dreams take flight from unexpected places. For 14-year-old Maggie Grey, Australia's junior world platform diving champion, it began while watching Simone Biles compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics. "Mom, I'm going to go to the Olympics," she declared at age eight. Six years later, she's well on her way. Maggie's path reveals remarkable strategic thinking uncommon in someone so young. At ten, she pivoted from gymnastics to diving, recognizing the competitive landscape and seeking a clearer route to her Olympic ambitions. Now a five-time Australian champion with international victories across three continents, she's fixed her sights on LA 2028 with unwavering determination. What makes Maggie exceptional isn't just her technical ability but her mental approach. While many athletes develop fear around the 10-meter platform, she thrives on it: "I actually enjoy the heights. I like the adrenaline it gives me." This psychological edge, according to her coach Ady Hinchcliffe (newly appointed head coach of Australian diving), is her "weapon" in competition. The conversation delves into diving's technical complexity, where athletes must master five different dive types with minimal margin for error. "The finest mistake and she's in the trees," explains Ady, likening it to a golf swing where the slightest error sends the ball off course. Yet Maggie maintains remarkable consistency across these varied movements. Financial challenges remain significant for elite athletes despite some funding support. Through the Aussie Athlete Fund, Maggie has learned valuable fundraising skills, starting with selling chocolate-covered strawberries to help fund her competitive journey. This education in "asking for help" represents a crucial life skill beyond the pool. Despite China's dominance in senior diving (sweeping all eight Olympic gold medals at the last Games), Maggie and Coach Ady maintain optimistic perspectives. Their story illuminates what's possible when talent meets opportunity, resilience overcomes obstacles, and an Olympic dream stays firmly in focus through it all. Support athletes like Maggie by visiting www.aussieathletefund.com and joining the mission to create sustainable funding models for Australia's future champions. 21: Hidden Battles Below the Water's Surface: Waterpolo's Tenealle Fasala's Unwavering Commitment

What does it truly cost to chase Olympic dreams? For water polo star Tenealle Fasala, the price has been devastating—twice being cut from Olympic teams, including watching from the sidelines as the squad she helped prepare won silver at the Paris Games without her. Tenealle’s journey defies the glossy highlight reels we typically associate with elite sport. Born into a swimming dynasty (her father an Olympian, mother a world-class swimmer), she instead chose the physically brutal world of water polo at age 11. Her natural strength and throwing ability quickly marked her as special, earning her spots on state and national teams by her teens. The raw emotion in Tenealle’s voice is palpable as she recounts the crushing disappointment of missing Olympic selection—not once, but twice. What sets her story apart is what happened after each setback. Rather than retreating, she channeled her heartbreak into improving her game, even accepting the painful role of reserve for Paris, training alongside the team knowing she wouldn't compete. When that team went on to win silver, her mixed emotions of pride for her teammates and personal devastation reveal the complex psychological terrain elite athletes must navigate. Beyond emotional resilience, the financial reality of her journey is sobering. Working four days a week while maintaining an elite training schedule, studying nursing, and living on tuna and rice, Tenealle exemplifies the sacrifices required when passion outweighs practicality. Her mother reveals spending years repaying loans just to fund junior competitions, a stark reminder that athletic talent alone isn't enough—financial backing is equally crucial. Now focused on LA 2028 with a transformed mindset, Tenille is no longer driven by fear of failure but by authentic self-expression. "Sport is a big part of my life, but it's not who I am," she reflects, demonstrating wisdom beyond her years. Her journey continues, but the lessons in resilience she's already revealed remain invaluable for anyone facing setbacks on the path to their goals. Want to support athletes like Tenealle? 20: Breaking Barriers: Josh Bell's Skeet Shooting Journey

What does it truly cost to chase Olympic glory? For Josh Bell, Australia's #1 men's skeet shooter, the price tag includes unpaid leave from work, constant financial uncertainty, and precious time away from his young family – all while maintaining the intense focus needed to hit clay targets moving at blistering speeds. When Josh boarded his flight to Paris for his Olympic debut, he carried an additional burden most athletes couldn't imagine: he didn't know if he'd have a job to return to. Despite this crushing pressure, he performed admirably on the world's biggest stage. Such is the reality for many Australian athletes who receive minimal funding without Olympic or World Championship medals already in hand. Josh's journey began at age 12 (the minimum legal age for a gun license) under his father's watchful eye, shooting on weekends as a reward for good behavior and academic achievement. What started as father-son bonding gradually evolved into serious competition around age 15-16 after stepping away from soccer. The transition from team sport to individual competition suited him perfectly, allowing complete control over his preparation and performance. Beyond the technical demands of skeet shooting – which requires split-second precision and the mental discipline to engage and disengage between stations – Josh navigates a unique challenge. As a firearm license holder, he must maintain impeccable behavior in all aspects of life. One altercation could trigger immediate license suspension and end his athletic career instantly. This awareness has shaped him into someone hypervigilant about potential conflicts, always planning escape routes from volatile situations. The Aussie Athlete Fund has transformed Josh's approach to funding his Olympic journey. Rather than seeking handouts, he's learned to recognize his value and create mutually beneficial partnerships with sponsors. This mindset shift, coupled with his natural determination, has positioned him to pursue his dreams for LA 2028 – where he hopes to stand on the podium with his wife and daughters cheering from the stands. Want to support athletes like Josh? Visit AussieAthleteFund.com and discover how you can help change the narrative for Australia's Olympic hopefuls. 19: Beyond the Diamond: Why Kayla Waller Stays When Others Walk Away

Through sheer determination, Australian softball squad member Kayla Waller defies what most would consider humanly possible. Training four to five days weekly with grueling four-hour commutes, she simultaneously maintains full-time employment and university studies while pursuing her Olympic dream. Her story reveals the extraordinary sacrifices made by athletes in sports that lack mainstream attention and funding. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Kayla reveals why she chose softball over other sports. "As a young woman getting told all these different things about your body," she explains, softball offered something rare – true inclusivity where athletes of all shapes, sizes, and ages compete at the highest levels. This acceptance stands in stark contrast to experiences in other sports where she was deemed "too short" or "not muscular enough." Perhaps most powerful is the mother-daughter dynamic between Kayla and Michelle Waller, a former Division I pitcher who now coaches alongside her daughter. Together, they made history winning an under-23 national championship undefeated – a testament to their shared passion and resilience. When questioned why she continued playing when every single teammate from her junior years eventually quit, Kayla's answer reveals both the crisis in women's sports retention and her exceptional character: "I control the controllables... I give the people around me and everything I do all of my effort." The financial reality is sobering – $15,000 to $20,000 annually just to represent Australia. Yet through the Aussie Athlete Fund, Kayla has not only secured support for herself but extended her fundraising efforts to include her entire team. Her powerful story of perseverance through injury (including surgery requiring a plate and six screws in her arm) and financial hardship offers vital insights into what truly sustains elite athletic careers when external rewards are minimal. Visit aussieathletefund.com to support athletes like Kayla who demonstrate that the price of pursuing sporting excellence shouldn't be insurmountable. 17: From Olympic Clay to Financial Play: Aislin Jones's Shooting Journey

Aislin Jones became the world's youngest Olympic shooter at age 16, qualifying for Rio 2016 in just four years instead of her planned eight-year timeline. Her journey illustrates the hidden financial costs of elite sport and the importance of mental wellbeing in athletic careers. • Dad Dave introducing 12-year-old Aislin to clay target shooting, where her natural talent was immediately evident • Meeting two-time Olympic shooter Lauryn Mark who became both a coach and lifelong mentor • Qualifying unexpectedly early for Rio 2016 at age 16 • Taking time away from the sport after missing Tokyo qualification due to burnout • The staggering $65,000 cost of preparing for Paris 2024, exceeding Ashlyn's annual salary • Learning to fundraise through the Australian Sports Foundation, raising $41,000 to support her Olympic journey • Finding balance between shooting, work, study, and personal life after returning to the sport • Pursuing financial planning as a career to help future athletes manage their finances • The absence of financial advisors in athlete support systems despite their critical importance This episode brilliantly captures the psychological transformation Aislin experienced in her relationship with fundraising, shifting from reluctance to ask for help to seeing community support as empowerment rather than pressure. Her journey comes full circle as she now studies financial planning with a passion to fill the critical gap in athlete support systems, determined to help future Olympians avoid the debt traps that plague Australian sports. Whether you're an aspiring athlete, a parent supporting sporting dreams, or simply fascinated by the hidden realities of Olympic journeys, this conversation offers invaluable insights into resilience, family support, and financial literacy in elite sports. 13: Molly McGill's BMX to Track Cycling Journey

Today, we sit down with the ultimate “Bike athlete” Molly McGill. Ranked #2 in the world in BMX at age 15, she is now 22yrs old on the Australian Women’s Track Cycling team training for the World Championships in Denmark this October. Hailing from Brisbane, Qld, Molly remembers that even at 5yrs old, she would ride up and down her big bitumen driveway all day,” which drew her to a local “come and try” session that locked her in to a BMX career that saw her training 6-days of week on her way to qualifying for Worlds back in 2016. But if it wasn’t for the NextGen scholarship provided by five-time world champion and London 2012 Olympian Caroline Buchanan, she never would have been able to make the trip to Columbia. It’s pretty amazing to see athlete’s like Caroline giving back and now Nat Cook’s fundraising efforts that provide grants for young athletes like Molly, who is now pursuing her Olympic dream in track cycling. Molly’s Mom Kate and Dad David are joining the conversation today which is an excellent demonstration of the support they’ve given her throughout her athletic pursuits.
