Adults Need Hobbies Too & September Is My New Years

Thursday, August 27th: Apparently I’ve entered my “try new things” era. I’ve been thinking about why so many of us stop learning, experimenting, and picking up new hobbies once we become adults. I recently started getting into art, painting, drawing with markers, learning about different techniques, and I am OBSESSED. My entire algorithm is basically art now, I’m taking art classes this fall, and I genuinely can’t remember the last time I was this excited to be a complete beginner at something. I’m also taking tennis lessons, attempting to actually get better at a new sport. We’re talking about why hobbies and learning new skills are so important as adults, especially when they have absolutely nothing to do with being productive, making money, or being “good” at them. I’m also sharing why September is my personal New Year. With back-to-school season approaching, I’m thinking about how I want my fall routine to look: creating a better work schedule, intentionally leaving white space in my calendar, and getting back into a supplement routine that I can actually stick with. I’m sharing the five supplements I’m planning to take and why I’m keeping the routine simple. Plus, we’re chatting about Apple’s Education Store and pricing, some new Apple features that are absolutely blowing my mind and making me wish I could be a student again. The new MacBook Neo has been loaned to us and it's adorable, super approachable, and is the perfect starter laptop for Milo to begin learning the basics and getting comfortable using a computer before he eventually needs one for school. Dr. Alison Yeung on Navigating the Digital World with Kids (Smartphones, Screen Time & Social Media)

Revisiting an important episode this week with Dr. Alison Yeung, family physician and creator of @thesmartphoneeffectmd, where she talks all things smartphones, social media, and (of course) kids. Why are so many parents struggling to set screen time boundaries? How is technology impacting our kids’ mental health, attention spans, and motivation? And how do we navigate platforms like Roblox, YouTube Kids, and even school-issued iPads? Renee and Dr. Yeung get real about balancing technology use, setting routines, and why it’s not just about “parenting harder”—it’s about pushing back against industries designed to hook our kids. If you’ve ever wondered when to give your child a phone (or if they really need one), how to protect their downtime, or how your phone habits shape theirs, this is a must-listen. Why Does My 7-Year-Old Argue About Everything? Understanding the “No” Phase

Thursday, August 20th: Is seven the new two?! Lately, it feels like everything I say is met with “NO,” an argument, or a negotiation, even when I’m suggesting something my 7-year-old actually wants to do. I mentioned this on Instagram and was flooded with messages from parents of 7- and 8-year-olds saying: SAME. So, what is going on at this age? In this solo episode of The Mom Room, I’m talking about why kids around 7-8 can suddenly seem more argumentative, oppositional, and determined to challenge everything we say. I get into what’s happening developmentally as kids become more independent, develop stronger reasoning skills, form their own opinions about rules and fairness, and start wanting more control over their lives. I also share what I’m learning about navigating this stage without turning every interaction into a power struggle: giving kids autonomy where we can, distinguishing between choices and non-negotiables, not over-explaining every boundary, looking underneath the behaviour, and perhaps most importantly, remembering that we don’t have to attend every argument we’re invited to. Because raising an independent kid is exactly what we want… but apparently the road to independence involves debating why they need to put their shoes on every single morning. 😂 If you’re parenting a 7- or 8-year-old and wondering why EVERYTHING has suddenly become an argument, this episode is for you. Beth (The Garbage Mom) on The Perimenopause Symptoms No One Warns You About

After months of living in fight-or-flight that no doctor could explain, Beth, aka The Garbage Mom, figured out the cause herself... She was on the wrong dose of progesterone! She joins The Mom Room this week to talk perimenopause, hormones, and how much of women's health women are still left to research on their own. Beth also shares how she was diagnosed with celiac disease a year ago, after five years of iron infusions and a hematologist who told her that as long as she was getting her period, she'd keep needing them. Renee and Beth get into the symptoms nobody warns you about: the sudden food aversions, the phase where everything smells like onions, cereal for dinner three times a week, and the 3AM wake-ups where one small worry suddenly feels like life or death. Both started making content in 2020, so they also compare notes on what six years of it has done to their lives — the pull to turn every moment into a post, the boundaries Beth set after hitting a rock bottom a few months ago, and her decision to keep her 10-year-old daughter offline entirely. Beth is an actor and sketch comedian, and she's currently building something special... A music and comedy festival for women over 40 that started out under the name Perimenopausal Palooza. The Live Better Project: Redefining Productivity, Summer Chaos & My Social Media Pet Peeve

August 13th, 2026: What does being "productive" actually mean when you stop comparing your life to hundreds of other people's lives online? In this solo episode of The Mom Room, I'm chatting about a few things that have been on my mind lately, starting with the fact that I've somehow fallen back into my old habit of making MASSIVE to-do lists. Summer has been amazing, but being out of our normal routine, constantly changing schedules, and trying to fit work into unpredictable weeks has definitely made staying organized a little harder. I'm already looking ahead to September and some new work habits I want to try, including time blocking and being much more intentional about what actually needs to get done. I also share my ridiculously quick and easy morning makeup routine with our friends at MERIT Beauty. Getting ready has never been easier, and it fits perfectly with this season of wanting things to feel simpler, not more complicated. Then we get into another major change I've noticed since I stopped mindlessly scrolling social media: I've completely changed the way I think about productivity. When you're constantly consuming other people's routines, workouts, meals, businesses, homes, parenting, habits and endless "productive day in my life" content, it's very easy to feel like you're never doing enough. Since I stopped watching what everyone else is doing, I'm much more relaxed about my own days. I'm focusing on what I actually want to prioritize instead of subconsciously adopting everyone else's priorities. And finally... I clarify what I meant when I said on Instagram Stories this week that I cannot stand the "woe is me" content people post for engagement. Because apparently I had some thoughts. 😂 We talk about productivity culture, comparison, social media, massive to-do lists, time blocking, getting back into a routine, intentional living, mindless scrolling, and why living better might require caring a whole lot less about what everyone else is doing. Shenae Grimes-Beech on What Every Parent Needs to Know About AI, Deepfakes & Keeping Kids Safe Online

At 13, Shenae Grimes-Beech booked her first commercial in Toronto. By 18, her life had completely changed. She'd moved out of her mom's house for the first time to film 90210 in Los Angeles. Now a mom of two building a career as a content creator, Shenae joins The Mom Room to talk about that whirlwind path from Degrassi to 90210 to motherhood, and to bring up a major AI concern most of us have never even heard of. Shenae unpacks what it was like growing up on camera before social media existed, and how her approach to sharing her daughter online has changed as she's gotten older. Then they get into the scary side of the internet, and the reason Shenae wanted to have this conversation: Grok, the AI chatbot built into X (formerly Twitter), and a feature nicknamed "Spicy Grok" that lets anyone "undress" or "nudify" a photo to generate sexually explicit images without the subject's consent. In the two weeks after it launched, over 3 million non-consensual explicit images were generated, a significant number of them involving minors. Shenae and Renee talk through the legal gray area (this should be illegal, right?), why victims are afraid to come forward, and how to start age-appropriate conversations with your kids about it before something happens rather than after. If you loved today's episode, tune into Shenae's new podcast, Lost the Plot, where she gets to go deeper with women in her generation than a 30-second clip ever allows. The Live Better Project: I Forgot What It Felt Like to Be Present + My Attention Span Is Coming Back!

August 6th, 2026: In this episode of The Live Better Project, I'm sharing one of the biggest changes I've noticed since I stopped mindlessly scrolling social media: my attention span is coming back. For years, I couldn't watch a TV show without checking my phone, read a book during the day without getting distracted, or simply enjoy a moment without wondering if I should be filming it for social media. Even conversations were constantly interrupted by notifications or the urge to check my phone. But after just a few weeks of intentionally putting my phone down for longer periods of time, something surprising happened. I can sit through an entire episode of Big Brother without reaching for my phone. I can read in the middle of the day. I can have uninterrupted conversations. I can enjoy experiences without feeling like every moment needs to become content. It's not perfect, but the difference has been shocking. In this episode, we discuss: How mindless scrolling changed my ability to focus Why every moment doesn't need to become content The surprising speed at which attention can recover Why being present feels so much more fulfilling than documenting everything Small habits that helped me spend less time on my phone If you've ever wondered where your attention span went, this episode is for you. From not wanting kids, to loving being a mother to one, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes joins The Mom Room this week to talk about motherhood and her new standup comedy special Ugly Baby. She shares her experience going through IVF, getting pregnant at 41, and how her purpose has shifted after having her child. The Live Better Project: Part One Of What I've Noticed About Myself Since I Stopped Mindlessly Scrolling

July 30th, 2026: What happens when you stop mindlessly scrolling social media? In this episode of The Live Better Project, I'm sharing one (of five) of the biggest changes I've noticed since stepping away from scrolling and consuming content mindlessly... and it has nothing to do with screen time. I've stopped caring about what I look like! I'm wearing less makeup, throwing my hair in a messy bun, leaving the house without worrying about looking "put together," and feeling more like myself than I have in years. We talk about why constantly consuming curated images changes the way we see ourselves, how comparison quietly becomes our baseline, and why removing that constant input has been one of the most freeing changes I've made. In this episode, we discuss: Why I care so much less about my appearance now How social media quietly changes what we think is "normal" Why comparison happens even when we don't realize it The freedom that comes from being your regular, authentic self THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! Marlie Cohen on Balancing Fitness and Nutrition As A Busy Mom

Marlie cohen, aka Kale and Krunches, joins The Mom Room this week to talk all about fitness and nutrition! This episode is for anyone who feels overwhelmed with all the weight loss, diet, and exercise advice online. Marlie stresses why strength training is so important for women, and speaks to those who have grown up in the "shrink yourself" era. As someone who fell in love with fitness later in life, Marlie knows the struggle of balancing it all - working out, sleeping well, being a mom, etc. To help other busy working moms out there, she created an app called Bounce Forward that provides several different programs for getting on the right track and staying consistent with your goals. The Live Better Project: Stop Overcommitting + How Saying No Has Helped Me Live Better

July 23, 2026: Welcome back to The Living Better Project! This week we're talking about one of the hardest, but most freeing, skills to practice: saying no. So many of us automatically say yes to invitations, commitments, and opportunities without stopping to think about what they actually require. We don't just commit to the event, we commit to the preparation, the travel, the mental energy, the recovery afterward, and everything else that comes with it. Lately, I've been fully embracing my "saying no" era, and it's been one of the biggest contributors to feeling happier, calmer, and more like myself. Because every time we say yes to something we don't genuinely want to do, we're often saying no to the things that actually fill us up. For me, that has meant more family walks, cozy evenings watching Big Brother (I can't believe I stopped watching it!), finally tackling projects around the house I've been putting off for years, and, my newest obsession, painting. Yes... I officially caught the painting bug. I share how I randomly discovered this new hobby, why it's become one of the most relaxing parts of my week, how my social media algorithm has transformed into a peaceful stream of artists instead of endless noise, and why I think every adult deserves a hobby that makes them completely lose track of time. In this episode we discuss: Why we overcommit ourselves without realizing it The hidden cost of saying yes to everything Why every "yes" is also a "no" to something else How protecting your time creates more space for joy The surprising benefits of finding a hobby as an adult Why painting has quickly become one of my favorite ways to unwind If you're trying to build a life that feels calmer, more intentional, and more like you, this episode is a reminder that sometimes the biggest life upgrade isn't adding something new, it's giving yourself permission to say no. Nina Spears aka The Baby Chick on Having a Positive Pregnancy, Birth, & Postpartum

Nina Spears, aka The Baby Chick, joins The Mom Room this week to share her wealth of knowledge about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Nina, a child birth and newborn care educator, shares the things she thinks first time moms misunderstand about labor and delivery, and what's often overlooked. As someone who has attended more than 350 child births, Nina knows that planning for birth extends to so much more than what's packed in the hospital bag. Expecting mothers need to prepare their minds, bodies, and partners for this new chapter in life. She stresses more than anything the importance of having healthy and happy moms. Focusing on holding the mother makes for a better world because when mothers are good, households are good, and when households are good, communities are good. This episode is for any new moms, expecting moms, and partners who want to learn about the journey of matrescence. The Live Better Project: The Non-Negotiables Method vs. A Massive To-do List

July 16, 2026: Welcome back to The Living Better Project! In episode three, we're talking about one of the biggest mindset shifts that's helped me feel more consistent, less overwhelmed, and actually make progress: choosing just 1–3 non-negotiables for the day or week. Instead of trying to improve every area of your life all at once (and inevitably feeling like you're failing), I'm sharing why narrowing your focus has been a complete game changer. Whether your priorities are going for a walk, making a high-protein breakfast, reading before bed, or getting to bed earlier, keeping small promises to yourself builds confidence and creates lasting change. I also dive into something I think we don't talk about enough: removing bad habits. We spend so much time trying to stack new habits onto already full lives, but sometimes the fastest way to feel better is to stop doing the things that are quietly draining your energy. We'll chat about why eliminating one unhelpful habit can have an even bigger impact than adding another "healthy" one. If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like you're constantly trying to optimize everything at once, this episode is your reminder that living better doesn't require doing more, it often starts by doing less, with intention. In this episode we discuss: Why choosing 1–3 non-negotiables is more effective than endless to-do lists How keeping promises to yourself builds confidence Why focusing on one priority at a time creates better long-term results The surprising power of removing bad habits Simple ways to make meaningful lifestyle changes without burning yourself out If you're enjoying The Living Better Project, I'd love for you to subscribe, leave a review, and share the series with someone who needs a little reminder that small changes really do add up. Melissa Janzso on Creating An Honest, Relatable Online Brand

Melissa Janzso, home, fashion, and lifestyle content creator, joins The Mom Room this week! From having a 9-5 to then having kids, Melissa started her online brand after being pushed by her husband to take an interior design course when she decided that she would not be fulfilled by just being a mom. Now, Melissa has an audience that looks to her for furnishing their homes and building their wardrobes on a budget, as well as home improvement ideas and raising children. This honest, relatable conversation is filled with discussions from hormone testing to reality TV, to whether or not psychics, horoscopes, and mediums are real or not. Renee and Melissa connect on their own individual struggles when it comes to content creation, and how they both believe that it's okay to not have a niche because they are sharing real life moments. They also laugh about where they are more opposite than alike. Check out Melissa's page below! FOLLOW MELISSA @melissajanzso THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! The Live Better Project: Two Lists That Changed Everything

Welcome back to Part 2 of my Living Better series! 🌿 This week, we're picking up where we left off after last week's conversation about decluttering and creating a calmer home. I share some new realizations I've had over the past week, including how shifting your focus away from yourself and toward other people can have a surprisingly positive impact on your mindset. I also take you through the simple morning routine I've been loving lately and why it's been helping me start my days feeling calmer, more intentional, and more energized. Then we dive into Living Better Tip #2: making two simple lists. One list is everything that gives you energy, and the other is everything that quietly drains it. I walk you through some of the things on my own lists and how they've completely changed the way I think about my time, my schedule, and the choices I make every day. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or like you're constantly running on empty, I hope this episode gives you a practical place to start, without adding more to your plate. And stay tuned for Part 3 next week, where we'll talk about giving your to-do list a makeover, choosing a few meaningful non-negotiables, and re-prioritizing your life so you can feel more like yourself again. Laura Clery on the Power of Single Motherhood

Laura Clery, content creator and author, joins The Mom Room this week to talk about her new book What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Hotter. After dealing with a traumatic separation and divorce from her children's father, Laura has found the shift to single motherhood liberating and empowering, despite challenging at times. Going through divorce when you have children is hard, and Laura shares what it was like having her personal life on display for the public to weigh in before she even had time to process everything. Laura had been making content online long before she had children, but being a mom opened her up to a new audience with all the comedy gold that comes with the job. We dive into her career journey, as well as the incredibly terrifying near death experience she recently went through where she was stuck under a refrigerator! Laura also gives insight on what it's like raising a child on the spectrum, and why it's important to stay positive even when psychologists and doctors are evoking fear. Check out her book below! The Live Better Project: Decluttering Your Physical & Digital Space

July 2, 2026: This week on The Mom Room, I’m kicking off a new series all about the small changes that have completely shifted how I feel day to day. A few months ago, I made a list of simple things I wanted to focus on to help me "live better", feel calmer, more energized, less overwhelmed, and more present in my everyday life. And honestly? The changes have been bigger than I ever expected. In this episode, we’re starting with one of the most impactful changes: decluttering and organizing your spaces (including digital!) one small area at a time. I share why tackling tiny spaces instead of attempting a massive overhaul has been so much more sustainable, how I’m maintaining these changes, and why our physical environment has such a huge impact on our mental well-being. I also dive into some of the ideas that really resonated with me from Ali Abdaal's book, Feel-Good Productivity: How to Do More of What Matters to You, and how I’ve been applying them to my own life in a way that feels realistic and doable. This is just the beginning. In future solo episodes, I’ll continue working through my "live better" list, sharing the habits I’m implementing, the challenges I’m running into, and the surprising ways these small shifts have completely changed my energy, mindset, and overall quality of life. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, stuck in survival mode, or like you need a reset but don't know where to start, this episode is for you. THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! Fatty15 Founder Stephanie Venn-Watson on How Studying Dolphins Led to Improving Human Longevity

Stephanie Venn-Watson, founder of Fatty15 and veterinary epidemiologist, joins us on The Mom Room this week to discuss the supplement that supports healthy aging for all. From working with the Navy to study dolphin populations in California and Florida, to creating a c15 supplement based upon her research, Stephanie brings us a wealth of knowledge on why fats are so important in every stage of life, especially during pregnancy and childhood. The awareness of how important c15 levels are in humans is growing. On average, one new peer-reviewed paper on c15 is being published a week through the world. As a leader in forcing the conversation around fats, Stephanie shares with us how you can get your c15 levels checked, which foods contain the best sources of c15, and why the discovery she made in dolphins 10 years ago allowed her to gain a completely different perspective. @fatty15 https://fatty15.com/ THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! Dust is Annoying + My New High-Protein Lunch Obsession + Our New YouTube Rules

Thursday, June 25th: Today I'm covering a truly thrilling topic: dust. Specifically, why there seems to be an endless amount of it in my house, why I recently found myself cleaning blinds and washing curtains, and how home maintenance somehow feels like a full-time job. I also share my latest food prep obsession, a ridiculously simple high-protein chicken bowl recipe I found on Pinterest that has completely transformed my lunches. It's easy, delicious, and somehow even got my husband's approval (which is saying something). Then we get into Milo's newest YouTube obsession and the boundaries we've recently put in place around screen time and content. I explain why I don't automatically view regular YouTube as the enemy, the difference between Kids YouTube and creator-led content, and how we're starting conversations about media literacy much earlier than I ever expected. We chat about creators, sponsorships, clickbait, algorithms, and helping kids think critically about what they're watching online. And finally, I share a new fitness goal that's got me excited: running. Yes, running. I talk about what I'm working toward, why I'm adding it into my routine, and whether any of you want to join me. Dust, meal prep, YouTube parenting, and running, an absolutely chaotic combination of topics that somehow makes perfect sense around here. Enjoy! Angela Santomero on How to Positively Use Child Psychology in Kids Media

Angela Santomero, co-creator of Blues Blues, creator of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Super Why!, and the new Princess Penelope's Purse of Preposterous Things, joins us on The Mom Room this week to talk all about kids media. With a masters in child development, Angela has been a key player in bringing child psychology to kids shows by asking herself the question, 'what if you could put the very best curriculum on TV?' She has applied her "view and do" method to create some of the most highly regarded kids shows, where every moment has something in it that can help influence, inspire, and add to a child's curiosity. Despite the dangers that come with unsupervised media, including misinformation, Angela explains how to approach media so that kids will be intrinsically motivated to watch content that holds valuable learning lessons. Hopefully this episode can help show parents that screen time can be beneficial to a child's understanding of kindness, empathy, self-esteem, and motivate and inspire them to create in the real world.
