Having a Purpose Versus a Passion

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about the concept of having a purpose to your life. Where you’re living your life driven by something that helps other people. This is different than having a passion regarding something you enjoy. A purpose always involves helping other people. And it can be one’s guiding light through their career. In this episode John talks about how in his 30s and 40s he had no clear purpose helping others. He was just trying to make enough money so he didn’t have to ultimately work. Then he discovered the reverse mortgage business. In that business, he had a purpose. Because he lost his dad when he was 24. And he saw how investment advisors tried to get his mom to do various investments and they were more concerned about their commission then his mom’s well-being. So when he got into the reverse mortgage business, his attitude was he was going to treat every customer like his own parents. Tell them the truth and tell them the negatives. It had a powerful impact on why the business was so successful. And today, John’s focus is having the purpose of giving driven people who want to play the game of life at their full potential an edge, an advantage. And Kelly feels exactly the same way. She has a purpose for being an example to her employees. She calls it the ripple effect. She loves the effect of helping employers find candidates for their jobs and on the flipside helping employees find great jobs. It’s her purpose. Buy John’s book, THE MISSING SECRET of the Legendary Book Think and Grow Rich : And a 12-minute-a-day technique to apply it here. About the Hosts: John Mitchell John’s story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn’t as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there’s a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it. When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life. His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process. John’s technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas’ McCombs School of Business, which is one the TOP 5 business schools in the country. If You Want the Exceptional Life Rather Than the Average Life, You Have to Have a SYSTEM for Intelligently and Purposely Leading Yourself

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about the concept of having a system for leading yourself versus just winging life. John talks about what a difference it made in his life in his 50s when he had a system for leading himself versus it is 30s and 40s when he was just winging life. When he was in his 50s he had a system that figured out the right actions to take. He had a system for being able to take those right actions consistently. He also had a system for being a conduit of learning. What a durable competitive advantage that is. At the end of the day, success is pretty simple. It comes down to knowing the right actions to take and then taking them consistently. In this episode John and Kelly talk about the great quote from James Clear who wrote atomic habits. You don’t rise to the level of your goals you sink to the level of your systems. So for the audience that is just considering this 12 minute a day methodology, the logic of intelligently and purposefully leading yourself with the system should be quite obvious. And for the audience that is already doing the methodology, John and Kelly talk about something important. Use the quality control checklist to make sure what you’re feeding yourself is of substantial quality. The Problem – Lack of Clarity

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about the effect of having a lack of clarity. In the advanced leadership of self methodology, it’s all about clarity. You define exactly the person you want to be, exactly what you want to accomplish, and precisely how you are going to achieve your clearly defined goals. You then feed that clarity to yourself each day as your morning routine. After 21 days, then the right actions start happening automatically. And those right actions create the life you desire. But it all comes back clarity. John and Kelly talk about how most people, probably 98% of people, have a level of clarity at two or three on a scale of 1 to 10. In terms of what they want and how they are going to get it. And the effect of that lack of clarity is it causes a person to keep replicating the life they have. As opposed to creating the life they desire. John and Kelly also talk about the process of having a clear vision and feeding it to yourself each day. Then from that clarity, it gives you an enhanced ability to iterate that vision. Later in the podcast John and Kelly talk about an interesting concept called you are the problem and you are the solution. But it gets us back to clarity. When you do thinking time sessions around you are the problem and you are the solution, watch what happens. Clarity comes to you in terms of what the actual problem is then you can likely see that you’re also the solution. AI: Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid Of It

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about AI. Today in the United States, approximately 75% of people are against AI. John talks about how misguided that is. The train has already left the station. AI is revolutionizing the world. And even if we wanted to, we couldn’t turn back now. Because China is intent on being the dominant force in AI and if we don’t keep up with them, we’re going to be subservient to the Chinese. John says people need to get on the AI bus or get run over by it. And John and Kelly understand why people feel the way they do. It’s the unknown. There are also concerned that it will take their jobs. During this podcast John and Kelly give practical examples of how they are using AI today in their lives. John talks about how he feels like he is 3 to 5 times more effective as a person today than he was nine months ago.It impacts his ability to do research that he never could do before. Greatly expands the nuances of his health. Then towards the end the podcast John and Kelly talk about the ongoing dance between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. And most people are just winging life. And one of the effects of that is they have a nebulous view of their career. On a scale of 1 to 10, there are probably a two regarding clarity. They don’t clearly see their three year vision. Or the milestones to get there. Or their strategy for success. When you use AI, it can let you see what you can’t currently see. Your own thinking is constrained by the four corners of your own mind. But when you learn to use AI as a thinking partner, the world changes. Your Life is Precious – Coming to Grips with That (Encore)

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly discuss the idea of making the audience appreciate individually how precious their life is. Coming to grips with that. John talks about when this really came home in his life. It was when his mom was dying of pancreatic cancer when he was 50 years old. At the same time John was engrossed in reading think and grow Rich probably 20 times to figure out the full secret of that legendary book. And as he would go to the hospital every night to see his mom, after he saw her he would cry his eyes out in the hospital parking lot for like 45 minutes every night. John had never experienced anything so gut wrenching. What he came to realize was that he felt like he was letting his mom down with his average life. After his mom and dad had given him all the advantages. That’s when John really came to appreciate how precious his life as he saw the gift of life leaving his mom. And in the end, that feeling of letting his mom down with his life with like rocket fuel in causing John to go deeper than anyone on the planet ever had to figure out the full secret of think and grow Rich. And the essence of what John created with his 12 minute a day technique is a way of doing life. Most people are just winging life. They don’t have an actual way of doing life. But that’s what the think it be it 12 minute a day methodology is. An actual way of doing life. During this podcast John also brings up another concept. You’re the problem and you’re the solution. Whatever problem you have in your life you are the problem. But here’s the good news. You’re also the solution. Once you grasp this, it’s tremendously empowering. And you use the TIBI methodology to implement the solution. And then finally John and Kelly talk about the process of enlightenment. It’s not linear. There are pivotal moments in your life where your level of enlightenment goes much higher. From learning one or two key things from someone more enlightening you are. Creating A Nest Egg So You Can Retire (Encore)

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly discuss the concept of creating a nest egg so you can retire. In discussing this, Kelly notes that she was a saver from a young age. Literally putting aside 20% a year. She was taught this by her dad who made her read the classic book Richest Man in Babylon. It truly is a fabulous book that really explains the concept of saving and compounding interest. John points out that he wasn’t that enlightened when he was younger. He didn’t really save in his 30s and 40s because he thought he would hit it big at some point in his entrepreneurial career. Fortunately he did. But it wasn’t a good strategy not to be embracing savings from a young age. John talks about how when he sold his company he got a large amount of money. And his idea was he just had to get about 5% return on the money in order to pay all his living expenses. But he discovered something he wish he had been alerted to at a younger age. Investment planners and money managers always tell people to diversify as opposed to investing their money in the S&P 500. With the idea of avoiding that 30% drop in the market that happens about every 10 years. But John found that not to be good strategy. Inevitably, that strategy of diversification would maybe cost John 10% a year of less returns than he would’ve gotten if he had invested in the S&P 500. So John is now at the point of embracing the idea of just putting his money in the S&P 500 and not doing anything else. This is actually the strategy of Warren Buffett. He says that by investing in the S&P 500, you’re investing in the United States. Which is the most powerful and innovative country in the world. And in the long run, that works out. Then John goes on to talk about the concept of never loaning money to anyone. Make that your golden rule. Kelly says she never learns money with the expectation of getting it back. And the last tidbit John talks about is never doing private investments or limited partnerships. Only invest in the S&P 500 and publicly traded stocks. The last thing John and Kelly talk about is clarity. Most people have about 40% clarity in their life. Watch what happens when you get it up to 100% clarity and you feed that clarity to yourself each day. Game changing. Buy John’s book, THE MISSING SECRET of the Legendary Book Think and Grow Rich : And a 12-minute-a-day technique to apply it here. About the Hosts: John Mitchell John’s story is pretty amazing. The Struggle of Life: And the Solution (Encore)

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly discuss the struggle of life, then the solution. So little back story on this topic. Recently John met a brilliant guy that is in the field of maximizing brain health. He read John’s book and had a candid suggestion for John on how to improve the book. He said there w was not enough explanation of the struggle that people go through in life. He said that before we give them the solution, we have to get them to buy in that I understand their struggle. That’s a very valid criticism. So during this podcast Kelly talks about her struggles earlier in her career. The struggles really began for her in her mid-30s. As she was launching into being an entrepreneur. She felt like she wasn’t playing to her potential. There was more gas in the tank. And John experienced the same thing is 30s and 40s. He worked harder than all his friends. But why weren’t his results matching his efforts. John had the naïve perception that he deserved big success because he was working harder than his friends. How unenlightened is that. Then for both John and Kelly, things shifted when they learned how the human mind works. From John discovering the secret of think and grow Rich. Which gave each of them immensely more control over their lives. John then goes on to talk about your subconscious mind is either your greatest asset or it is your greatest nemesis in life. It’s your choice. If you do nothing, your subconscious mind remains your greatest nemesis. Because it’s innately wired for survival. Causing you be fear-based and reactive. Alternatively, you can stop winging life and do the think it be it 12 minute a day methodology. That gives you control of your subconscious mind. You Are Two People In One – The Doer and The Observer (Encore)

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly introduce an interesting idea. You are two people in one. There is the do’er you and there is the observer you. John points out that this is a powerful way to look at your life from a 30,000 foot view. And it is particularly appropriate for someone doing the think it be it 12 minute a day methodology. That’s the case because the observer you took the life GPS template and with the conscious mind created your desired life. Exactly the person you want to be, exactly what you want to accomplish, and precisely how you’re going to achieve your clearly defined goals. Again, all conscious mind involving the observer you. Then for 12 minutes a day, when you read your life GPS template, you got everybody on the team together at the same time. The life GPS template is instructing the doer side of you on exactly what you want done. Giving all the specifics. But while you are reading your life GPS template, the observer you is also evaluating it. Deciding if there’s any tweaks to it. And factoring in that the observer you actually created the life GPS template and customized it to your unique life. When you really think about this idea it really puts your life in perspective. And more than anything else, at the end of that you’re really an observer of your life. When we talk about who YOU are, you’re really the observer of your life. Have You Thought About Renewing Your Wedding Vows?

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about the idea of renewing one’s wedding vows. John was recently at a wedding a month or two ago and he was taken by the wedding vows the bride and groom were articulating. John was thinking about how he and Ginger are going to Europe in a few weeks. And so they decided to renew their vows at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. John goes on to explain that creating the wedding vows was done aided by AI and Claude. The first step was articulating the life we want together today. Which is way different than the life John and Ginger envisioned when they got married 15 years ago. And then once the vision of the future marriage was created, the second step was to create the vows. John talks about how this whole process has been a great process. And during this conversation Kelly brings up the use of AI regarding all sorts of things. Not just business. John goes on to mention that in his new book he has a chapter on how the gap between the 2% in the 98% is widening. Because the 2% will actually use AI and the 98% dabble with it. Same is true with leadership of self. The 2% embraces it and the 98% essentially don’t. What’s the True Test of Intelligence?

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about what the true test of intelligence is. As John ultimately discloses, it’s getting what you want in life. Creating the life you want. Then the second question. What is the currency of life? Is it time or is it money? Or something else. It’s actually your attention. During this podcast John and Kelly talk about why people’s lives evolve like they do. Most people are just winging life. They don’t really have an actual way of doing life. And so to a significant degree, their outcomes in life come down to luck. Now keep in mind, genetics, upbringing and that type of thing are a factor. But luck has an outsized role if you’re not intentionally leading yourself. Why You Are Not More Successful – Your Intelligence Is Not Choosing Your Actions

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about the concept that the reason you’re not more successful than you are is because your intelligence and intellect is not choosing your actions. John mentions in this podcast that he is writing a new book called advanced leadership of self. He’s establishing the academic discipline of the emerging field advanced leadership of self. With the intention of making the University of Texas the global leader in advanced leadership of self. John mentions that he is writing the book in conjunction with AI. It’s a fascinating process. But in the podcast John mentions the most profound thing he ever learned is that up to 95% of his daily actions are unconscious. And since they are unconscious, his conscious mind intelligence and intellect is not controlling his daily actions. Yet those daily actions are the very thing that determines his success. In the podcast John talks about University of California researcher Benjamin Libit. And the experiment he did in the 1980s that proved that a person takes an action first and then a few milliseconds later becomes conscious of it. The implications of that for a driven person determined to be successful is huge. And John says that the turning point in his life was dispelling the false belief that he controlled his daily actions. As the podcast is wrapping up, John and Kelly end with a profound thought. Working harder is like stepping on the gas with the parking brake on. If you are not leading yourself deliberately and intelligently with a system. It’s Not About Working Harder

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about the concept that attaining success is not about working harder. Without sounding cliché, it’s about working smarter. Both John and Kelly were blessed to take their own personal annual income to over $1 million a year by working smarter. More specifically, understanding how the human mind works. Appreciating that one’s daily actions determine their success in each area of their lives. But the majority of their daily actions, up to 95%, are unconscious. Therefore they had to gain control over their unconscious daily actions. That in a nutshell is what working smarter is all about. And here’s a great saying to appreciate. Working harder is like stepping on the accelerator when the parking brake is on if you’re not leading yourself deliberately and intelligently with a system. John also mentions another powerful saying. That you don’t rise to the level of your goals, you sink to the level of your systems. During this podcast John and Kelly also talk about the nuances of using AI. And how transformative it is. And as we said last time, the gap between the 2% in the 98% is widening. Because at two factors. The 2% have a system for intentionally leading themselves and the 98% don’t. Also the 2% is embracing AI thoroughly and completely, whereas the 98% is just dabbling with it. The Difference in the 2% and the 98% is Widening

Takeaway from today’s show is you need to be up to speed on using AI to your maximum advantage .In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about how the difference is widening between the 2% in the 98%. And there’s two factors at play here. The first is artificial intelligence. The people who understand how to use products like chat GPT and Claude adeptly are very definitely at a competitive advantage. John mentions that his competency today as an intelligent functioning human being is substantially greater today than it was nine months ago. He can see things that he couldn’t see before because he was constrained by the four corners of his own mind. But by using AI, he can see things he couldn’t see before. And that’s critical because success comes down to one’s daily actions. Both doing them consistently and identifying the right actions to take. AI allows you to better see the right actions to take. The second factor in the separation between the 98% and the 2% is a concept of advanced leadership of self. The vast majority of the 98% are simply winging life. They don’t have a way of leading themselves. They just get up each day and do the best they can. But the 2%, a large percentage of them have an actual way of doing life. During this podcast John shows our audience how using AI can make you see the right actions to take in your career. He uses the example of his current three year goal and the milestones to get there. Watch during this podcast how AI expands John’s thinking and understanding. Encore: Creating Success in Your Career – This Will Be Eye-Opening!

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly share their observations on creating success in your career. John mentions that he started out as a CPA and became an entrepreneur when he was 30. Then he was in seven different businesses in his 30s and 40s. But in retrospect, he sees that he was not connected to any of them emotionally. Then when he turned 50, he got in the reverse mortgage business. A business he was, in fact, emotionally connected to. Because he had seen how investment advisors had tried to coerce his mom into various investments after is dad had died at John’s age of 24. He saw that those investment advisors didn’t have his mom’s best interest at heart. So when he got into the reverse mortgage business, he was committed to treating all his customers like his own parents. So that was the emotional connection. And the big Takeaway is that whatever business or industry you are in, you need to be passionate about it. You need to be emotionally connected to it in order for you to thrive long-term. John then gets into more detail about what took his income, when he was in his mid-50s, to 25 times the $200,000 – $300,000 a year he making the prior 20 years. He saw that he was doing three high-performance skills he never was doing before. He was highly organized. Planning is day the night before and time blocking is days. He was deep thinking two times a week. Tuning into reality. Growing every week from experts in areas that he needed in order to be successful as an entrepreneur. Primarily in marketing. Then John saw that through the think it be it methodology he was feeding himself six key things every day. His business plan, his strategy for success, the two or three things that move the needle, where he wanted the business to be three years from now, the 4-5 milestones to get there, and the linchpin issue to go to the next level. From feeding those six things to himself every day, he continually refined his understanding of those key components every day. So it was that combination of doing those three high-performance skills coupled with a continually evolving deeper understanding of his business that caused his income to go up by 25 times. And lastly, John talks about if you’re an employee, you are, in fact, really an entrepreneur. The same concepts apply. Your career is your business. Taking Our 12 Minute a Day Advanced Leadership Of Self Methodology To The Next Level – Using AI

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about taking the advanced leadership of self 12 minute a day methodology to the next level. Using AI. And here’s the thing to appreciate. At the end the day, one success is determined by taking the right actions on a consistent basis. On the issue of consistently taking the right actions, that’s addressed in the 12 minute day methodology. 95% of your daily actions are unconscious. When you feed the succinct articulation of your desired life yourself each day, that’s the repetition the subconscious mind needs to rewire your autopilot. So you have control over those unconscious daily actions. That way you can do them consistently rather than sporadically. But here’s the other issue. You have to be taking the right actions. So consider this. The right actions regarding your health are pretty straightforward. Regarding eating right and exercising. Same with having a great romantic relationship. The right actions are pretty straightforward. But when he gets to one’s career, the right actions are not nearly as obvious. And in methodology, for your career you establish where you want your career to be three years from now. And the 4-5 milestones to get there. That gives you a guidepost for the right actions to take. But here’s the problem. Your vision is trapped by the four walls of your own mind. Your vision of the right actions is constrained by your own biases and limited knowledge. But this can be overcome. And is being overcome using AI in the advanced leadership of self methodology. In this episode Kelly explains her three year vision for her business. As well as the three or four milestones to get there. Then once this is established, John and Kelly gives it all to chat GPT. Chat GPT then gives a much deeper view of the right actions. This overcomes one’s limited vision from the four walls of one’s own mind. Encore: The Mind Thrives on Order

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly explain that the mind thrives on order. And when you feed the succinct articulation of your life to yourself each day you create immense order in the mind. And as Kelly points out, it makes you feel lighter. It causes all those half thoughts that are going on in your head to either go away or become full thoughts. To drive home this idea that the mind thrives on order, John points out that’s why you enjoy music. A few years back, John learned how to play blues guitar. And in the process of doing so, he learned the timing in music. So in this podcast, he plays the song Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. Explains the timing and then counts it. This is a vivid example of how the mind thrives on order. To wrap things up, John makes a point of how one’s success in life as well as one’s enjoyment of life comes down to the thoughts that are going on in your head on an ongoing basis. So simple but many people don’t get this. But for the few that do, it’s life-changing. The think it be it methodology influences the creation of your thoughts. Define the Three Year Vision for Your business and Five Other Components of Your Business

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk about how the think it be it life GPS template is set up around your career. There are six things you need to define. Your business plan, your strategy for success, the two – three things that move the needle, where you want your business to be three years from now. The 4 - 5 milestones to get there, and the linchpin issue to go to the next level. But maybe the most important of the six is defining your three year vision for your business. Once you see where you want to go, then you will define the 4-5 milestones to get there from where you are today. That gives you the path. But the lesson from today’s podcast is it’s all about clarity. The clearer you see where you’re going, the more clear it is what the right actions are to get there. John and Kelly talk about over the years with their think it be it business, and some years they liked the three year vision and some years they didn’t like the direction. So it’s valuable on an every six month basis to assess on a scale of 1 to 10 how well you like your three year career vision. If you don’t find yourself liking it to the level of a nine or 10, maybe it’s better to spend more time figuring out how to get it to that nine or 10 than continuing to continuing to pursue a three year vision that you don’t fully embrace. Clarity always brings the right actions to the surface. Buy John’s book, THE MISSING SECRET of the Legendary Book Think and Grow Rich : And a 12-minute-a-day technique to apply it here. Focus On What You Want, Most People Focus On The Obstacles

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly talk how in life, most people focus on the obstacles rather than focusing on what they want. During this podcast episode, John and Kelly play a short clip from leadership guru Simon Sinik. It really illustrates the idea of how people focus on the obstacles. As John pointed out, what a lousy way to live. But people are doing that because they are innately wired for survival. Which causes them be fear-based. That’s why they focus on the obstacles. Coupled with the fact that by being wired for survival they are profoundly resistant to change. John goes on to talk about how easy it is to manipulate the subconscious mind. And manipulate the person you want to be. If your natural inclination is to focus on the obstacles, it’s pretty easy to change that. By repeatedly saying to yourself to focus on the possibilities rather than the obstacles, over about 21 days that will happen. But when you’re winging life, as most people do, you’re innately wired to focus on the obstacles. As a little background, John does a weekly program for the 18 head coaches at the University of Texas. And this week he’s teaching them how to up their game on using chat GPT. So here are some of the ways to do it. First of all, today chat GPT is probably the best AI program to use. Because it’s more advanced than the other programs regarding having a back and forth oral conversation. But you have to have the paid version which cost $20 a month. But the first step up for using AI beyond asking a question or two or improving emails is to have ongoing conversations with it. As an example, John oftentimes has a problem he’s thinking about and on his drive home will have a back-and-forth conversation with chat GPT. And it will go on as long as John wants to talk. Another significant use is using chat GPT during thinking sessions. Either to answer your question or to factually get more information. A third use is giving AI a set of eyes. Using your camera. So chat can see what you see. Then you can ask it questions regarding what it sees. Another use is creating a morning briefing. It’s tied to your emails and calendar. Get a morning briefing just like the president of the United States does. Further you may want to adjust the settings in AI. You can make it so it’s not so agreeable with everything you ask it. You can also use chat GPT to have an alter ego AI agents to play a particular role. Maybe have one agent that really challenges you hard on things. Another idea is regarding your health. There is an AI program called open evidence that is available to medical practitioners. It is tuned in to all the medical research. You can ask your doctor to ask it to research something and then you can give it follow-up questions. Your medical provider should be agreeable to doing that. Further, you can get your AI program to do tasks for you. As an example you might want to set up a Google ad words campaign. It can do the whole thing for you. So the bottom line is today you are under using AI. For John and Kelly, it’s evolved into being their personal coaches and personal mentors. And it’s only going to get better. He is also the “mental coach” for the head athletic coaches at the University of Texas as well.
