Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint: Director Jack Spring on His Star-Studded Christmas Film
Send us Fan Mail What do Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Celia Imrie and Karl Pilkington have in common? They're all part of an incredible cast in the new Christmas film Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint! On the latest episode of The MarshyCast, I caught up with director Jack Spring to talk about his new festive film, the message behind it, and how he managed to attract such a phenomenal collection of British acting talent. I'd spoken to Jack previously about his film Three Day Millionaire, which I really enjoyed, but his latest project is something completely different. A Christmas Film With a Heart Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint follows a reclusive man who reluctantly finds himself directing an amateur production of A Christmas Carol at a struggling retirement home. While there's plenty of humour along the way, the film also explores loneliness, isolation and the importance of human connection, particularly at Christmas. Jack and I discussed the character of Aubrey, who has certain traits and ways of seeing the world that aren't given a specific label in the film. We talked about why that was important and how the story shows that sometimes, by taking a chance and putting yourself out there, you might discover people who accept and appreciate you for who you are. It's a lovely message, especially at a time of year when loneliness can be particularly difficult. An Incredible Cast, But Not an Incredible Budget! One of the most impressive things about the film is its cast. Alongside Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent and Celia Imrie, the film features Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Sophia Di Martino, John Bradley, Adrian Rawlins, Dustin Demri-Burns, Nigel Planer and Karl Pilkington. That's quite a collection of talent! Jack explained how the strength of the script helped bring these actors together, because this certainly wasn't a production where everyone was turning up for a massive payday. We also chatted about what the cast were like away from the cameras, the atmosphere on set and, perhaps most importantly, who told the best stories! From Three Day Millionaire to Christmas Magic Having previously directed Three Day Millionaire, Jack has taken a very different direction with this film. We discussed why he wanted to tell this particular story, the challenges of creating something with a different tone, and what attracted him to Aubrey Flint's world. And then there's the small matter of Kamikaze Christmas Cops 2! The fictional film gets mentioned throughout Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint, so naturally I had to ask Jack the important question: will we ever get to see a trailer? The Ultimate Christmas Quickfire! Of course, I couldn't let Jack go without putting him through my ultimate Christmas quickfire questions. It's a chance to find out a little more about the man behind the camera and get properly into the festive spirit! I really enjoyed Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint, and it's one of those films that reminds us Christmas isn't just about presents and decorations. For the contestants on Channel 4's Aldi: The Next Big Seller, that dream could become reality. Farmer and TV presenter Jimmy Doherty and broadcaster Anita Rani joined me on The MarshyCast to talk about the return of the popular food competition, which begins on Channel 4 on Thursday 5 November at 8pm. We also found time to talk about Anita's experience of travelling with her dad on Celebrity Race Across the World, and what she learned along the way. A life-changing opportunity for food producers Aldi: The Next Big Seller returns with a seven-part series featuring emerging food and drink suppliers competing for the chance to secure a listing in more than 1,080 Aldi stores nationwide. For a small business, that's an enormous opportunity. A product that might currently be sold at local markets, independent shops or online could suddenly be introduced to customers across the country. But with so many talented producers hoping to impress, what does it take to stand out? Jimmy and Anita joined me to discuss what viewers can expect from the competition and the challenges facing the people hoping to turn their food ideas into supermarket success stories. Jimmy Doherty joins the presenting team This year sees farmer and TV presenter Jimmy Doherty join returning host Anita Rani. They'll be joined by Aldi UK's Chief Commercial Officer, Julie Ashfield, as producers compete to impress and secure that all-important supermarket listing. Jimmy brings his experience of farming and food production to the programme, while Anita returns to guide viewers through the competition. We discussed the new series, the products being showcased and the excitement of seeing independent suppliers given such a huge opportunity. From sweet treats to Christmas favourites The new series features a different food theme in each episode, giving producers the chance to showcase a wide variety of products. The seven episodes are: Sweet Treats Party Healthy & Wholesome Dinners World Store Cupboard Christmas Special The dedicated Christmas Special will air in December, with producers hoping to impress shoppers during one of the busiest food-shopping periods of the year. Whether you've got a sweet tooth, enjoy discovering foods from around the world or simply love trying something new, there's plenty to look forward to. And for anyone who's ever thought they had a food idea that could become the next supermarket hit, the programme offers a fascinating look at what it takes to get a product onto the shelves. Anita Rani on travelling with her dad Away from the food competition, I also wanted to ask Anita about a very different television adventure. She took part in Celebrity Race Across the World alongside her dad, and I was interested to hear what she took away from the experience. Travelling with a parent as an adult is very different from going on a family holiday when you're younger. You're spending time together, facing unfamiliar situations and potentially discovering things about each other that you never knew. We talked about what Anita learned from sharing the journey with her dad and how the experience affected their relationship. It's a lovely personal addition to a conversation that otherwise focuses on food, business and television. Could your favourite supermarket product be the next big seller? From ambitious food entrepreneurs to the relationship between a daughter and her dad, this was a conversation with plenty of variety. Dr Lillie Parker on Newborn Life, Sleepless Nights and Why Parents Aren't Alone
Send us Fan Mail Having a baby is one of life's greatest experiences, but as paediatrician and mum Dr Lillie Parker admits, even the experts aren't fully prepared for the reality of parenthood! I caught up with Dr Lillie Parker for The MarshyCast to discuss the highs, lows and downright messy moments of raising a newborn, as part of the Rascals Real Talk Takeover campaign. Lillie has a baby boy who's nearly 11 months old, has just started crawling and, rather importantly, still hasn't slept through the night! As a dad of two, now aged nine and 13, I could certainly relate. I also warned her that having a second child doesn't necessarily make things easier. You've got all the challenges of a newborn, but now there's another child to look after too! The Parenting Moments Nobody Warns You About From eating one-handed and endless washing to the cost of baby formula and the military operation required just to leave the house, we discussed the everyday challenges that don't always make it into the parenting books. I even shared a particularly memorable story involving my daughter, a wedding in Italy and a rather unfortunate nappy explosion on the day I proposed to my wife! It's safe to say romance wasn't quite what I'd planned. Why Googling at 3am Might Make Things Worse One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was about how parents look for reassurance. Research discussed as part of the campaign found that 92% of parents surveyed had searched online during the night for answers. Lillie explained that although having information at our fingertips can be helpful, it can also increase anxiety, particularly when parents turn to unreliable social media accounts or AI-generated medical advice. She also admitted that becoming a mum has completely changed her perspective as a paediatrician. Even with years of medical experience, she now understands the worry parents feel when their baby develops something as simple as a cough. You're Not the Only One Going Through It Perhaps the biggest message from our chat was the importance of supporting one another. We talked about the unspoken understanding between parents, whether that's helping someone struggling with a pram or simply reassuring a new mum or dad that what they're experiencing is normal. The Rascals Real Talk Takeover campaign highlights 20 common parenting challenges, encouraging more open conversations about the realities of having a baby. Because while parenthood can be exhausting, expensive and occasionally very messy, it's also incredibly rewarding. Send us Fan Mail American country singer Halle Kearns has been spending time in Britain, and it seems she's picked up more than a few British expressions along the way! Following our first conversation at Country Calling, Halle joined me again on The MarshyCast to talk about her latest single Could've Been, the stories behind her songwriting, her experiences in the UK and some rather unexpected behind-the-scenes moments. And this time, I had a game waiting for her! Halle Kearns is becoming a little bit British! When Halle and I first spoke at Country Calling, we discovered that the British way of greeting people can be a little confusing. After all, when we say "You alright?", we don't necessarily want a full rundown of someone's day. It's just our way of saying hello! So when we caught up again, I wanted to find out how much of Britain had rubbed off on her. We talked about her experiences at Country Calling, the differences between American and British habits, and how she's started speaking like a Brit in more ways than one. Having previously discussed how closely British country fans listen to lyrics, it was lovely to revisit her experiences of performing over here. Could've Been: a song about missed opportunities Halle's single Could've Been explores the feeling of looking back at a romantic opportunity and wondering how differently things might have turned out. It's a slower, lounge-influenced country track that captures the emotion of a connection that never quite became something more. But there's also an interesting story behind the promotional pictures. The images show Halle dressed in a glamorous ball gown beneath a spotlight, creating a striking visual to accompany the song. However, as Halle explained during our conversation, the reality behind those pictures was rather more redneck than you might imagine! It's a reminder that what looks polished and glamorous in a finished photograph can be a very different experience when you're actually making it. When songwriting reveals a little too much Country music has always been a genre built around honest storytelling. For Halle, that honesty can occasionally create some awkward situations! We talked about how writing from personal experience can mean revealing things that other people might recognise, or perhaps sharing details she'd rather have kept to herself. At one point, Halle even wondered whether she'd revealed a little too much during our conversation! It's one of the fascinating things about songwriting. Being open and honest can create a connection with listeners, but what happens when the people who inspired those songs hear them? And where do you draw the line between telling a great story and keeping something private? When is Halle coming back to Britain? After her time at Country Calling, there was one question I couldn't let Halle escape without answering. When is she coming back to the UK? With British country music audiences continuing to embrace artists from across the Atlantic, I wanted to find out whether another visit might be on the cards. To finish our conversation, I decided to take inspiration from Halle's new single and create a little game called Could've Been. Autumn Budget 2026: Will You Actually Be Better Off? Rachel Rickard Straus Explains

The Chancellor has announced a series of measures aimed at easing the cost of living, but how much difference will they make to ordinary households? Rachel Rickard Straus, Money Editor at the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast to discuss the Autumn Budget 2026 and what the announcements could mean for our everyday finances. £100 towards energy bills One of the biggest headlines is a £100 Household Energy Payment for up to 20 million households in England living in council tax bands A to D, starting in January 2027. The temporary VAT cut on domestic electricity is also being extended until July 2027. It's welcome help, particularly with energy costs putting pressure on household budgets. But will £100 make a noticeable difference when bills remain so high? Motorists get another fuel duty freeze The existing 5p-per-litre reduction in fuel duty has been extended until July 2027. That's potentially good news for drivers, especially those who rely on their cars for work. But there's an important distinction between fuel becoming cheaper and the government simply deciding not to increase the tax on it. We also discussed changes to tax-free mileage support for people who use their own vehicles for work. The hidden squeeze on our wages You might get a pay rise and still wonder why your money doesn't seem to stretch any further. One reason is the continuing freeze on income tax thresholds. As wages rise, more of our earnings can become subject to tax, even without an increase in the headline tax rates. There are also changes ahead for the taxation of savings interest and rental income. So if your salary increases but your tax bill rises too, how much better off are you really? Minimum wage rises, but what about businesses? From April 2027, the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over will increase to £13.21 an hour. The government says this could mean around £910 more per year before tax for a full-time worker. That's positive news for lower-paid employees, but it also raises questions about how smaller employers will manage higher wage bills alongside their other rising costs. Pensioners and first-time buyers We also looked at new income tax protection for some people over State Pension age, particularly those whose income is limited to the full new State Pension. And for people hoping to buy their first home, the government has announced the Your First Home scheme, offering equity loans to eligible buyers of new-build properties. But will additional financial support genuinely make homes more affordable, or could it increase demand without solving the shortage of suitable properties? Can our high streets benefit? Pubs, independent shops, cafés and restaurants remain under financial pressure. The Budget includes further business rates support for smaller retail, hospitality and leisure properties. Could this give local businesses some much-needed breathing space, or will other costs continue to make trading difficult? The question that matters most With the Office for Budget Responsibility forecasting economic growth of just 1% in 2027, the bigger picture remains challenging. There are measures designed to help with energy bills, driving costs and wages, but there are also continuing pressures from taxation and the cost of living. Rachel and I discussed what the announcements mean beyond the political headlines. Because ultimately, most of us aren't judging a Budget by how well the Chancellor delivers a speech. Now, with a new single, an album on the horizon and a baby on the way, she's preparing for one of the biggest chapters of her life. Madeline joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast, following our previous conversation at Country Calling, to talk about new music, life in Nashville, becoming a mother and some rather questionable food combinations! How are fans reacting to I Think You're in Love with Me? When I last spoke to Madeline at Country Calling, she told me how much she enjoys sharing new music with fans before it's officially released. Whether that's performing an unreleased song live or posting a little teaser online, she loves seeing how people respond. So naturally, I wanted to know what the reaction had been to her latest single, I Think You're in Love with Me. We discussed how valuable that connection with fans can be, particularly when you're deciding which songs to share with the world. And there's plenty more music on the way. Sweet Tooth arrives in 2027 Madeline's upcoming album, Sweet Tooth, is due for release in 2027. We talked about the new project and how her music has developed over the years, particularly since making the move from Canada to Nashville. Eight years is a long time to spend building a career in a city where so many talented musicians arrive hoping to make their mark. So I asked Madeline whether, after all this time, she finally considers herself a Nashville local. We also looked back at what she's achieved since making that move and how her perspective has changed along the way. Canada, America and Britain: who makes the best country audience? Having performed for audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, Madeline has experienced some very different country music crowds. We discussed the differences between performing in Canada, the United States and Britain. It's something I always enjoy asking country artists, particularly those who've experienced the enthusiasm of UK fans. Does the audience react differently to the lyrics? Are some crowds louder than others? And does the atmosphere change depending on where you're performing? Madeline shared her experiences of connecting with fans in different countries. A new chapter: becoming a country music mum Away from the music, Madeline is preparing for another major milestone. She's about to become a mum! We talked about what motherhood might mean for her life and career, and how country music often celebrates family, relationships and the different stages of life. But while becoming a parent is an exciting new chapter, it also brings plenty of unknowns. Will it change how Madeline approaches touring, writing and performing? And might becoming a mother influence the stories she wants to tell through her music? It's a fascinating time for an artist who's already experienced so much change over the past eight years. Diet Coke, sweet treats and cheese on sushi?! Of course, it wouldn't be a proper MarshyCast conversation without heading off on a completely unexpected tangent. When we spoke previously, Madeline told me about her love of Diet Coke and fizzy drinks. This time, we discovered that she's been trying to find healthier alternatives, although her love of sweet treats hasn't disappeared! With an album called Sweet Tooth, perhaps that's quite appropriate. We also got talking about the food in Nashville and how different it can be from what Madeline grew up eating in Canada. Which somehow led us to cheese on sushi. Yes, cheese. On sushi. I'm not entirely sure the Japanese would approve, but it certainly gave us something to discuss! What would you tell your younger self? I finished our conversation by taking Madeline back eight years, to when she first arrived in Nashville. Imagine being able to sit down with that younger version of yourself, full of ambition but with no idea what the future might hold. What would you say? Would you offer advice, reassurance or simply tell yourself to enjoy the journey? I asked Madeline what message she'd give to the young woman who first moved to Nashville to chase her dreams. And her answer was one of the most touching moments of our conversation. With a new album on the way, a growing career and motherhood just around the corner, it's a reminder of how much life can change in eight years. One in Three Drivers Knowingly Driving with Tyre Problems: George's Car Media and Sergeant Owen Messenger Explain Why It Matters
Send us Fan Mail Your car can tell you when it's running low on fuel, when the engine needs attention and even when your tyres are losing pressure. But can it tell you everything you need to know about the condition of your tyres? That's one of the questions I discussed with George from George's Car Media and Sergeant Owen Messenger when they joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast. With research suggesting that one in three drivers knowingly drive with a tyre problem, we talked about why so many motorists are taking risks and how a quick check could help keep us safer on the roads. Are we relying too much on modern cars? Cars have become incredibly clever. From dashboard warning lights to sensors that monitor tyre pressure, modern vehicles can alert us to all sorts of potential problems. But that doesn't mean they can identify every issue. George and Sergeant Messenger explained why drivers still need to physically inspect their tyres rather than relying entirely on technology. A tyre might have damage, uneven wear or insufficient tread that a dashboard warning won't necessarily identify. And yet, how many of us actually get down and have a proper look? Two million tyres failing MOT tests One of the most striking figures we discussed was that around two million tyres fail MOT tests. That's a huge number of tyres being presented for testing in an unacceptable condition. It doesn't necessarily mean two million different cars are driving around with illegal tyres at any one time, but it does highlight the scale of the problem. We talked about why this happens. Some drivers simply don't realise their tyres are in poor condition. Others may be aware there's a problem but continue driving anyway. Whatever the reason, the consequences can be serious. After all, your tyres provide the contact between your vehicle and the road. Do you get what you pay for? We also discussed something most drivers will recognise: good tyres aren't cheap. When it's time to replace them, the price can be an unwelcome surprise, particularly when you're already juggling household bills and other expenses. But George and Sergeant Messenger explained why tyre quality matters and why choosing tyres should be about more than simply finding the lowest price. We talked about the importance of treating maintenance as part of the cost of owning a vehicle. It's much the same as owning a house or having a pet. There are expenses that come with the responsibility, whether we like them or not. And keeping your tyres in good condition is one of the most important. The 60-second tyre check Perhaps the most useful part of our conversation was how little time it can take to give your tyres a basic inspection. Just 60 seconds could be enough to spot an obvious problem that might otherwise go unnoticed. George shared his top tips for checking tyres quickly, including the importance of actually getting down and looking at them rather than relying on a casual glance. As a general guide, drivers should regularly check for visible damage, unusual wear and adequate tread depth, as well as checking tyre pressures using the manufacturer's recommended figures. For cars in the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference. Of course, a quick visual inspection isn't a substitute for proper maintenance or professional advice if you suspect something is wrong. But it's a simple habit that could make a real difference. When did you last check yours? One of the things that struck me during this conversation was how easy it is to take tyres for granted. We spend plenty of time thinking about how our cars look, how they drive and what technology they have. But the four tyres connecting us to the road don't always get the same attention. And perhaps that's something worth changing. So here's a question. When was the last time you physically checked your tyres? Not when your car last went for an MOT or service. Rebecca Jackson on Racing, Parenting and Why We'll Miss Those Sunday Morning Sports Runs

Being a parent with a sporty child can sometimes feel like running your own taxi service. But would you swap it? Championship-winning racing driver Rebecca Jackson joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast to talk about motorsport, parenting and why those journeys taking our children to their favourite activities might be more precious than we realise. From behind the wheel to the racetrack Rebecca has built a successful career in motorsport, so naturally I wanted to know how it all began. What first inspired her to become a racing driver? And in a sport traditionally dominated by men, did she face resistance simply because she was a woman? Her answer might surprise you. We talked about her journey into racing and the experiences that helped shape her career. Are we encouraging our children or choosing their hobbies for them? As parents, it's only natural to want our children to enjoy the things we love. If you're passionate about football, you might dream of seeing your child playing every weekend. If you love motorsport, perhaps you'd love them to follow you onto the track. But where's the line between encouraging them and pushing them towards something we'd choose for ourselves? Rebecca and I discussed the importance of allowing children to discover their own interests, even when those interests are completely different from ours. After all, it's their hobby. We're just the transport! The Sunday morning taxi service Anyone with children involved in sport will recognise the routine. The early alarm. The kit bags. The rush to get everyone ready. The drive to a sports ground that seems to be miles away. And, of course, the journey home. It can sometimes feel like your entire weekend revolves around getting your children from one place to another. But Rebecca and I talked about something that many parents probably wouldn't admit when they're dragging themselves out of bed on a freezing Sunday morning. We actually love it. There's something special about watching your children enjoy themselves, develop their skills and discover what they're capable of. And one day, when they're older and no longer need a lift, those early mornings might be exactly what we miss. Why the best conversations happen in the car Another interesting part of our conversation was about the time we spend with our children while driving. Sometimes, trying to get a conversation going at home can be hard work. Ask how school went and you might get a one-word answer. But put them in the passenger seat, start driving and suddenly they begin telling you things. We discussed why those journeys can create opportunities for conversations that might not happen around the dinner table. Perhaps it's because you're sitting side by side, without the pressure of looking directly at one another. Whatever the reason, those drives can become much more than simply getting from A to B. Our parents did it too! Of course, this isn't a new experience. Rebecca and I also looked back at our own childhoods and remembered how our parents did exactly the same thing for us. They drove us to activities, supported our interests and made sure we got where we needed to be. Although we agreed that the cars they were driving were probably nowhere near as comfortable as the ones we've got today! It's funny how you don't always appreciate those little sacrifices until you become a parent yourself. The things parents give up We also talked about how far parents are willing to go to support their children's sporting ambitions. Some have admitted missing major events in their own lives because they were busy taking their children to matches, training sessions or competitions. Sam Lovegrove on Race Mechanic, a Lotus Elise and a Very Unusual Cow Connection!
Send us Fan Mail What do you do when you're trying to fix a racing car and the part you need isn't available? If you're Sam Lovegrove, apparently you start looking at a cow's milking equipment! Mechanic and television presenter Sam Lovegrove joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast to talk about his new television series, Sam Lovegrove: Race Mechanic, which premiered on Quest on Monday 19th October. The series follows Sam as he helps owners prepare their racing cars and motorcycles for competition, tackling mechanical problems, tight deadlines and the pressure of getting everything ready for race day. But as we discovered, the real challenge doesn't necessarily end when the vehicle leaves the workshop. A Lotus Elise with a difference The first episode features a heavily modified Lotus Elise, with owner Steve Butts hoping to achieve a hill climb time of under 34 seconds. We talked about the challenges involved in preparing the car and one decision that might surprise motorsport enthusiasts. Sam decided to add traction control. Now, if you're trying to make a car faster around a track, you might expect the opposite. Removing electronic assistance is often seen as a way of giving drivers more direct control. So why would Sam want to put it back in? It's one of the technical decisions we explored, and a reminder that making a racing car quicker isn't always as straightforward as removing parts and adding more power. What has Alice the cow got to do with racing? One of my favourite parts of our conversation involved the rather unexpected appearance of a cow called Alice. As Sam explained, being a mechanic sometimes means finding a solution using whatever materials and parts are available. And apparently, that can include a tube from Alice's milking equipment! It's certainly not the sort of thing you'd expect to find on the parts list for a racing machine. But it perfectly illustrates the resourcefulness that mechanics sometimes need when faced with an unexpected problem. After all, when you're working against the clock, finding a practical solution can matter more than where the part originally came from. The real test begins at the racetrack We also talked about the difference between working in a fully equipped garage and trying to fix something when you're actually at a race meeting. In the workshop, you've got your tools, equipment and a familiar environment. At the racetrack, you've got time pressure, unpredictable conditions and a driver who's desperate to get back out and compete. So I asked Sam whether that's where a mechanic truly earns his reputation. Is it one thing to build and prepare a brilliant machine, but something else entirely to keep it running when everything starts going wrong? It's a question that gets right to the heart of the new series. Is finishing more important than winning? I finished our conversation with a question about pride. For a racing driver, the ultimate goal is often obvious: cross the finish line first. But does a mechanic see things differently? Would Sam rather watch a car he's worked on win the race, or see it complete the event without a single mechanical problem? It's an interesting distinction between the satisfaction of engineering a reliable machine and the thrill of achieving the best possible result. Emma Stevens on Chapters, Life's Unexpected Turns and Her Upcoming UK Tour
Send us Fan Mail If you could go back and spend just one day in a previous chapter of your life, which day would you choose? It's one of the questions I put to singer-songwriter Emma Stevens when she joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast. Emma has a new single called Chapters, and it gave us the perfect opportunity to talk about looking back, moving forward and how life doesn't always follow the story we originally imagined. When life doesn't go to plan We've all experienced moments when something didn't work out the way we wanted. Perhaps an opportunity disappeared, a relationship changed or life simply took us in a completely unexpected direction. At the time, those moments can feel like setbacks. But when you look back years later, sometimes you realise they led you somewhere better than you'd ever planned. Emma and I talked about those experiences and how our perspective changes as we move through different stages of life. It's a theme that connects beautifully with her new song Chapters. When a personal song becomes somebody else's story One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was about the relationship between an artist and their audience. Writing a song can be an incredibly personal experience. The lyrics might come from a particular moment, feeling or memory that means something very specific to the songwriter. But once that song is released, something fascinating happens. Listeners begin connecting it to their own experiences. A song written about one situation might remind somebody else of a completely different moment in their life. So I wanted to know: does the meaning of a song change once other people start making it part of their own story? We talked about that special connection between Emma and her fans, and how music can bring people together through experiences they might never otherwise have shared. Emma Stevens heads back out on tour Emma is also preparing to return to the stage, with her upcoming tour including a visit to Southampton. We talked about what audiences can expect from the shows and why performing live creates such a personal connection between an artist and the people listening. For fans who have followed Emma's music over the years, the tour offers another opportunity to share those songs and the stories behind them. If Emma's life were a film... Of course, I couldn't let Emma escape without a few more unusual questions. If somebody decided to make a film of her life, which actor would she choose to play her? And perhaps more importantly, which of her own songs would she choose to play over the closing credits? Then there was the chance to revisit the past. If Emma could spend just one day in any previous chapter of her life, which would she choose? It's an interesting question because the obvious answer isn't necessarily the right one. Would you revisit your happiest day, return to a moment you'd forgotten or choose an ordinary day with someone you miss? Writing the next chapter We finished by looking forward rather than back. After talking about Chapters, the experiences that shape us and the moments that don't go according to plan, I asked Emma one final question: If you could write the opening sentence of your next chapter, what would you want it to say? It's a question that probably deserves a little thought from all of us. Andi Osho on Getting Stronger in Midlife, Menopause and Why That Cup of Tea Can Wait
Send us Fan Mail Getting older doesn't necessarily mean slowing down. In fact, midlife might be one of the most important times to start thinking about getting stronger. Actor, writer and coach Andi Osho joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast to talk about navigating life's unexpected turns, the impact of menopause and perimenopause, and why physical strength can make such a difference to our wellbeing. Life doesn't always follow the script Andi has built a career across acting, writing and comedy, but one of the things we discussed was how life rarely works out exactly as you imagined. Sometimes you land the role you've always dreamed of. Other times, the opportunity doesn't come along, or things take a completely unexpected direction. We talked about learning to accept those changes, knowing when to push forward and when it might be better to go with the flow. It's a lesson that applies well beyond the entertainment industry. Menopause affects more than one person Our conversation also turned to perimenopause and menopause, and the changes women can experience during this stage of life. Those changes aren't necessarily limited to physical symptoms. Sleep, mood, concentration and emotional wellbeing can all be affected, and that can have an impact on relationships and everyday family life. It's why understanding what's happening matters not only for women experiencing these changes, but also for partners and families. We discussed the importance of talking openly about menopause and recognising that it can be a significant transition. Why getting stronger matters in midlife One of the key themes of our conversation was the importance of maintaining physical strength. As we get older, looking after our muscles, bones and general fitness becomes increasingly important. Regular strength-building activity can help support physical health, while exercise can also have benefits for mood, sleep and mental wellbeing. For women going through perimenopause, those benefits can be particularly valuable, although exercise isn't a cure for every symptom. Andi and I discussed how getting stronger doesn't necessarily mean spending hours lifting weights in a gym. There are plenty of ways to build strength, from resistance exercises and bodyweight movements to activities you can do at home. The important thing is finding something that works for you and your circumstances. Beware the after-work cuppa! Of course, knowing exercise is good for us and actually getting around to doing it are two very different things. Andi had some wonderfully practical advice about choosing the right time. If you're planning to exercise after work, perhaps don't go home and settle down with a cup of tea first. Because we all know how that goes. You sit down for five minutes, get comfortable, and suddenly the gym seems considerably less appealing than the sofa. We talked about making exercise fit into your routine rather than trying to force yourself into a schedule that doesn't suit your life. And that's perhaps the biggest takeaway from our conversation. Getting stronger in midlife isn't about trying to become the person you were twenty years ago. Outpost Drive on The Outpost, Two Years Without Wi-Fi and Accidentally Ignoring Johnny Depp
Send us Fan Mail Imagine disappearing into the countryside for two years, living on a remote farm with no Wi-Fi, surrounded by sheep, and emerging with a double album. That's part of the story behind The Outpost, the debut album from Outpost Drive, who joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast. And if that sounds like an unusual way to launch a music career, it turns out putting themselves in extreme situations is something they're rather good at. Two years, no Wi-Fi and plenty of sheep Outpost Drive spent two years living on a remote farm on the English-Welsh border. No constant notifications, no endlessly scrolling through social media, and no Wi-Fi. Just the countryside, the music and, apparently, quite a lot of sheep. We talked about what that experience was actually like and how living somewhere so isolated affected their creativity and relationship. But they weren't completely cut off from the music world. During that period, they also headed out on tour, creating an extraordinary contrast between the quiet isolation of their rural home and the noise, excitement and crowds of live performances. One minute you're surrounded by sheep. The next you're back in the city, performing to an audience. It must make coming home from a tour rather interesting. Do Outpost Drive need a therapist? One thing that became clear during our conversation is that this wasn't the first time the pair had deliberately put themselves in an unusual or challenging situation. Throughout their relationship and their musical journey, they've repeatedly chosen experiences that push them outside their comfort zones. Which naturally led me to ask whether they might actually need to see a therapist. All in the nicest possible way, of course! But behind the humour is an interesting question about creativity and whether stepping away from ordinary routines can help artists discover something new. A double debut album, without AI There's certainly nothing half-hearted about The Outpost. Rather than introducing themselves with a conventional single album, Outpost Drive have made their debut a double album. We talked about why they chose to release so much music at once, and how the experience of living and creating together influenced the project. We also discussed their decision not to use artificial intelligence in making the album. At a time when AI is becoming increasingly common in music, it's an interesting choice, and one that led us into a wider conversation about creativity and the importance of the human element. Joe Perry, Johnny Depp and an awkward encounter And then there's the story involving two rather famous names. Outpost Drive told me about meeting Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, a pretty extraordinary moment for any musician. But there was someone else there too. Johnny Depp. You'd think meeting one of Hollywood's most recognisable actors might be difficult to overlook. Apparently not when you're Outpost Drive and Joe Perry is standing in front of you! We talked about what happened and how Johnny Depp ended up receiving rather less attention than you might expect. One song to save Before letting them go, I finished with a particularly difficult question. If every Outpost Drive song was about to disappear and they could save just one, which would they choose? It's a tough decision for any artist, particularly when you've just released a double debut album. But it's also a fascinating way to discover which songs mean the most to the people who created them. His music brings together country, rock, soul and other influences, and we discussed how difficult it can be to put artists into neat little musical boxes. That led us to Sheryl Crow. Josh pointed out that music which once fitted comfortably into the rock category might now be considered country. We talked about how musical boundaries have shifted, using Sheryl Crow's award-winning work as an example. And there's an extra connection, because Josh is appearing at a festival alongside Sheryl herself! Heading to the UK with Drake Milligan British country fans will soon have the opportunity to see Josh live as he joins Drake Milligan on his upcoming UK tour. We talked about what he's looking forward to, bringing his music to UK audiences and the relationship between the two performers. Send us Fan Mail Twenty-five years ago, Sarah Whatmore appeared on the very first series of Pop Idol. But while the programme opened doors to the music industry, what happened afterwards wasn't always the dream she'd imagined. Sarah joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast to talk about her new single, Hate, her experiences in the music industry and why she decided to spend so many years away from the spotlight. When the dream becomes difficult For many young singers, appearing on a major television talent show is the opportunity of a lifetime. The first series of Pop Idol arrived at a time when television talent competitions were beginning to change the way audiences discovered new artists. Sarah was part of that original wave, but her experiences after the programme revealed a much less glamorous side of the business. We talked about the gossip, fabricated stories and the way the press treated young female performers. Sarah recalled photographers even taking pictures up her skirt around the time she released her first solo single following Pop Idol. It's shocking behaviour, and it formed part of a much wider conversation about how she was treated and why she eventually decided to take a lengthy break from the public eye. Looking back now, 25 years after that first series, I wanted to know what advice Sarah would give the younger version of herself who was just starting out. A new chapter with Hate Sarah is now releasing new music, including her single Hate. It's a title that might make you expect something loud, aggressive and full of angry guitars. Instead, it's a dance track. We talked about why Sarah chose that musical direction, the story behind the song and whether this release is the beginning of more new music. After everything she's experienced, it's interesting to hear her talk about making music again and where she wants to go next. Pop Idol, Top of the Pops and Liam Gallagher Of course, we couldn't talk about Sarah's career without revisiting some of those early experiences. Anthea Turner on Looking After Your Future Self, Kilimanjaro and Finally Getting Her Gold Blue Peter Badge
Send us Fan Mail If you could do one thing today to make life easier for yourself in ten or twenty years, what would it be? It's a question more of us are beginning to consider as we think about our “future selves”, and it's something I discussed with renowned Blue Peter presenter Anthea Turner when she joined me on The MarshyCast. Although before we got to the sensible stuff, there was an important injustice to address. Anthea finally has her Gold Blue Peter badge! Given everything Anthea did during her time on Blue Peter, you might assume a Gold badge had been safely tucked away somewhere for years. Apparently not. Anthea told me she eventually received one, not necessarily because somebody looked back at her achievements and decided the time had come, but because she moaned that she didn't have one. Sometimes asking really does work. And Anthea certainly hasn't stopped taking on challenges since her Blue Peter days. She recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for charity, which led us onto the increasingly adventurous things some of us seem to do as we get older. You'd think age might encourage a quieter life. Instead, Anthea has climbed Kilimanjaro and previously found herself jumping out of a plane on Celebrity SAS. Looking after the person you'll become Behind the adventures was a more serious conversation about planning for later life. Looking after your future self isn't just about putting money aside. It's also about staying on top of your health and making decisions now that could make life easier further down the road. We talked about the financial side too, including smart meters and how having a clearer picture of the energy you're using can help households understand their usage. Although Anthea identified another potential benefit. They can help you win arguments. If someone insists they're definitely not responsible for the energy bill, having the numbers in front of you may suddenly turn domestic debate into a particularly low-budget episode of CSI. We also talked about attitudes towards money among younger generations. Being sensible with money and knowing how to save might not sound like the most romantic qualities on a dating profile, but financial habits can matter when people think about building a future together. Ultimately, whether it's health, finances or simply continuing to challenge yourself, the conversation comes back to one question: What can you do now that your future self will be grateful for? Laura Lexx on Marriage, Getting Older and Why Life Is a Yo-Yo
Send us Fan Mail There comes a moment in life when you realise you might not be cool anymore. For comedian Laura Lexx and me, it appears that moment involves standing in a playground collecting conkers for your children. How did this happen? Laura joined me on The MarshyCast to talk about her show Yo-Yo, which looks at life, love and what happens when a marriage reaches the point where your partner has pretty much seen everything you've got. As Laura and I have both been married for 11 years, our conversation inevitably became a minor investigation into one of life's great mysteries: How do men and women actually manage to live together? Because there's something peculiar about a long-term relationship. You spend years fighting against whatever life throws at you. You're building careers, sorting out homes, raising families and generally trying to get yourselves to a place where everything feels reasonably settled. Then one day you realise things are actually... good. Excellent. Now you can start arguing with each other about something completely ridiculous. It's that up-and-down nature of relationships that helps explain the title Yo-Yo. Laura describes it as a metaphor not just for marriage, but for life itself. Things go up, things go down and just when you think you've got everything under control, off it goes again. Of course, turning your marriage and family into comedy raises another question. Does Laura's husband get veto power? I asked whether she needs permission before putting jokes about him into a show. It turns out she does run material past him, and he's not the only member of the family with potential editorial influence. Dad gets consulted too. There must be something slightly terrifying about discovering that an embarrassing family moment hasn't just been remembered, it's now got a lighting cue. We also talked about getting older and that strange moment when you look at your life and wonder when exactly the transition happened. Once you were cool. Now you're collecting conkers. And because discussing 11 years of marriage wasn't risky enough, we finished with a game that could cause considerably more trouble: Marriage: Keep It or Bin It? A selection of the little things that come with married life, with Laura deciding whether they're worth keeping or need to go straight in the marital skip. That's something Poppy and Vicki from First Time Flyers reflected on when they joined me for the latest episode of The MarshyCast. Before becoming a band, all four members were independent artists with careers and musical identities of their own. Becoming a band means finding a shared identity while still bringing four individual personalities, voices and experiences to the table. It's a question I put to TV executive Amanda Ross when she joined me on The MarshyCast to talk about Between The Covers Live: Celebrating Agatha Christie. The live show brings together Amanda with author, actor and director Ben Miller, bestselling crime writer Lucy Foley and barrister, broadcaster and bestselling author Rob Rinder to celebrate the enduring appeal of Agatha Christie. Lucy also has a particularly fascinating connection to Christie's world, having been trusted by Agatha Christie Limited to write a brand new Miss Marple novel, Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel, 50 years after Christie's final Marple adventure was published. One of the things that struck me while preparing for the interview was simply the sheer amount of work Christie produced. How do you keep coming up with new characters, crimes, motives and twists without the creative well eventually running dry? Amanda and I talked about that extraordinary creativity and why, decades later, audiences are still fascinated by Christie's stories. It also feels like the whodunit is having another moment. Crime novels remain hugely popular, while murder mysteries have found enthusiastic audiences across books, television and film. Part of the fun is that they can be enjoyed in completely different ways. Some of us mentally pin photographs to an imaginary evidence board, suspicious of anyone who enters the drawing room carrying a cup of tea. Others haven't got a clue who did it and are having a marvellous time anyway. We also talked about what happens when you take the experience of discussing books and put it in front of a live audience. For Amanda, one of the joys of Between The Covers Live is bringing people together who share that enthusiasm for stories, characters and, in this case, the Queen of Crime. With Ben Miller, Lucy Foley and Rob Rinder joining her, I also wanted to know whether Amanda had secretly vetted everyone beforehand. Sally-Anne Hayward: Why Ageing Isn’t a Crisis, It’s an Upgrade

But comedian Sally-Anne Hayward thinks there’s another side to it. Ageing isn’t a crisis, it’s an upgrade. That’s the theme of Sally-Anne’s new comedy show and, when she joined me on The MarshyCast, I wanted to know what actually gets better with age. One of the biggest changes is becoming more comfortable in your own skin. There can be something liberating about reaching the point where other people’s opinions don't carry quite as much weight as they once did. We talked about whether that confidence simply arrives with age or comes from years of discovering who you actually are. But is getting older the same experience for everyone? Sally-Anne and I discussed the differences between ageing as a man and as a woman, and whether women potentially face greater pressure around appearance and expectations as they get older. There's another part of ageing that doesn't get discussed quite as much: friendships changing. People who were hugely important in your twenties might no longer be part of your everyday life years later. Careers change, relationships happen, families arrive and people move in completely different directions. Sometimes there isn't an argument or dramatic falling out. Life simply changes and people drift apart. Sally-Anne also told me that getting more experienced as a comedian doesn't mean you stop learning. She still watches other performers and notices the little things that make them particularly good at what they do. Sometimes it's something on stage, but often it's what audiences don't see: preparation, discipline and sheer work ethic. And after discussing all the wisdom that supposedly arrives with age, there was only one sensible way to finish. A game of Getting Older: Upgrade or Downgrade? Because some parts of ageing might genuinely improve your life. Others? Michael Ball on Glow, Willy Wonka and Why the Fear Never Completely Goes Away
Send us Fan Mail Michael Ball has spent more than four decades performing on some of the biggest stages in musical theatre. But despite all that experience and success, there's still a voice in his head asking: Am I good enough? It's something Michael spoke remarkably openly about when he joined me on the latest episode of The MarshyCast. Michael is heading back out on the road with his new show, Glow, including a date at Portsmouth Guildhall, and we talked about what audiences can expect and, perhaps more importantly, how he wants people to feel when they walk out afterwards. We also talked venues. Portsmouth Guildhall has welcomed some extraordinary performers over the years, but life backstage isn't always quite as glamorous as audiences might imagine. Michael recalled one particular venue where the facilities included a shower... in a hallway. Nothing says showbusiness quite like trying to wash your hair while somebody wanders past looking for the dressing room. Our conversation also turned to Michael's latest theatrical challenge: playing Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Taking on such an iconic character might be daunting for any performer, but Michael admitted that even after everything he's achieved, he can still be plagued by the fear that he isn't good enough for a role. It was fascinating to hear someone with his experience talk so candidly about self-doubt and how it hasn't simply vanished with success. We also discovered some common ground through radio. Michael has spent plenty of time behind the microphone himself, and we talked about the best interviews being the ones that stop feeling like interviews altogether. Rather than mechanically working through a list of questions, they become two people having a conversation. Which, appropriately enough, is exactly where our own chat ended up. Before Michael escaped, I had one final question. Across a career containing so many memorable characters, if he could perform just one of his previous roles again, which would he choose?
