300th Episode Special: The Emu War

It’s our 300th episode, so we’re doing things a little differently. Michael is joined in the studio by five returning guests and very funny people — Jimmy Mak, Glen Tickle, Dan Wilbur, Matt Donnelly, C.J. Johnson and Jay Black — to hear one of the strangest stories we’ve ever covered. In 1932, Australian farmers were facing a serious problem: roughly 20,000 emus were tearing through wheat fields in Western Australia. The government’s solution was to send in soldiers from the Royal Australian Artillery armed with Lewis machine guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. What followed became known as The Great Emu War, an actual military operation in which the birds proved so difficult to kill that newspapers began openly making fun of the soldiers. For Episode 300, Michael tells the story while Jimmy, Glen, Dan, Matt, C.J. and Jay are along for the entire ride — reacting, asking questions and inevitably making the whole thing much more ridiculous. Three soldiers. Two machine guns. 10,000 rounds of ammunition. 20,000 emus. What could possibly go wrong? This week on The Internet Says It’s True. Endless Dance: The 1518 Plague

In the summer of 1518, one woman walked into a street in Strasbourg and started dancing. Days later, dozens of people were doing the same thing. Within weeks, chronicles claimed the number had reached into the hundreds, and city officials responded with doctors, professional musicians, a ban on dancing and eventually a pilgrimage to a mountain shrine. This week, we look at what we actually know about the Dancing Plague of 1518, why the famous death toll may not be as solid as you've heard, and the leading theory for what caused hundreds of people to apparently lose control of their own bodies. Project Azorian: Stealing a Soviet Sub

In 1968, a Soviet ballistic-missile submarine disappeared somewhere in the Pacific. The Soviets couldn't find it, but the United States did - and what happened next involved Howard Hughes, a fake deep-sea mining company, a gigantic mechanical claw and a ship secretly designed around one nearly impossible mission. This week, we dive into Project AZORIAN, the CIA operation that attempted to steal K-129 from three miles beneath the Pacific Ocean without the Soviet Union realizing what was happening. Against Odds: Hopkins Finds Petrovka

Anthony Hopkins needed a copy of The Girl from Petrovka to prepare for a movie role, but none of the major London bookstores he tried had one. Then, while waiting for a train at Leicester Square Underground station, he spotted the exact novel sitting abandoned on a seat. Months earlier, author George Feifer had lost one very particular copy of that book somewhere else in London, and when the two men finally compared notes, an already improbable coincidence became almost impossible. We tell the full story in this episode and then play the Yap Yap Quiz with Comedian, Glen Tickle! Please note: The Internet Says it's True will be taking a 2 week break after Wednesday's "Mid-Week Mini" and will return with a new episode on September 21. Crossword Spy: D-Day's Strange Leak

Weeks before D-Day, readers of the Daily Telegraph began encountering some unusual answers in the newspaper's crossword puzzle - Utah, Omaha, Overlord, Mulberry and Neptune. British intelligence noticed too. The man constructing the puzzles was investigated, the invasion went ahead, and the whole thing was dismissed as an extraordinary coincidence. Forty years later, one of his former students finally explained where the words had really come from. We tell the story here, then talk with owner of Promotions and Unicorns Too, Rob Einhorn! Fake History: Gun Advocates’ Favorite Quote

Did a Japanese admiral really say America could never be invaded because there would be "a rifle behind every blade of grass?" It's one of the most repeated quotes in American history, cited in speeches, books, and debates for decades. This week, Michael Kent follows the trail back through wartime records, biographies, and historical research to discover where the quote actually came from, why historians reject it, and how one sentence became more famous than the evidence behind it.
