Bela Lugosi Beyond Dracula | Bill Fleck on Bela’s Monster
Author, writer, and blogger Bill Fleck returns to The Ghostly Gallery Podcast to discuss his newest book, Bela’s Monster: Lugosi, the Monster, and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. Best known as Count Dracula, Bela Lugosi had a much more varied and complicated career. We explore his early films, his memorable performance in White Zombie, his two appearances as Ygor, and the story behind his only portrayal of Frankenstein’s Monster. Bill shares what his research uncovered about Lugosi’s connection to the original 1931 Frankenstein, why so much of his role in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man was removed, and how those changes affected the way his performance has been viewed over the years. We also discuss Lugosi’s deleted dialogue, the Monster’s blindness, and how differently the performance might have been received if audiences had seen it as originally intended.
