1.13 The future starts with Michael Bruder

The Future Starts in the Chula Vista Elementary District with Michael Bruder The Chula Vista Elementary District provides every student with career driven experiences at the 4, 5 and 6 grade. In this episode we chat with Michael Bruder in the Innovation Station which is housed in the public library, and offers students an engineering experience designed with Qualcomm. Michael and his team work with local industry partners to identify real world problems, and students are given the opportunity to tackle them using design thinking processes while learning more about their own strengths, interests and values. Place based learning allows students to tackle these challenges in spaces out in the community, traveling to the water treatment plant for the Hydro-Station, and the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center for their Health-Station. Chula Vista Elementary District has a powerful vision for this work, believing they have a responsibility to develop each child’s full potential, and these dynamic learning experiences allow students to explore their personal strengths and interests and connect them to related careers. Get an inside look at how CVESD tackles these topics and builds opportunities for students to engage in career readiness at the elementary level. 1.12 The future starts with Harold Mumford

Episode 1.12: The future starts with Harold Mumford Trained to be a lawyer, but called to be a teacher, Harold Mumford teaches English, Social Science and Engineering. He fell into it accidentally as a more traditional teacher, but after coaching First Robotics, Harold got sucked into project based learning and started teaching Project Lead the Way Engineering. He trains students to do the work, he wants them to “fire him” and get him out of the way while he leaves them be to do the work. Posing a challenge or problem to solve, he then steps back and watches students grapple with the work and find their own solutions. Industry partners and alumni regularly come into his classroom to mentor students and work alongside them. Harold also builds alignment to the middle school, bringing his own engineering students to the middle school to work with them in their classes and at the STEM night. He strives to build a culture of learning and appreciate kids for what they are and can bring to the table. 1.10 The future starts with George R. Zubieta

Episode 1.10: The future starts with George Randy Zubieta How do we create a place where students can feel like they are good at something in the classroom and can find meaningful employment? That’s what inspired Randy when he was a high school woodshop student to dream of a day he would become a woodshop teacher himself. Getting hired a week before the covid shutdown meant he had to learn to pivot early on, but providing kits for students allowed them to have hands on experiences even at home. Randy has embraced Skills USA, a Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) that offers students leadership opportunities as well as an opportunity to compete with other students across the state and beyond. His students also showcase their work at the County Fair, building their real world skills for an authentic audience. As folks in these trades retire there are few skilled workers ready to take their place - and these programs are a perfect way to prepare students for the openings expected as many experts leave the field to the next generation. 1.09 The future starts with Ryan Parks

Before coming to education, Ryan Parks started a production company creating music videos and doing freelance filmmaking. He asked himself “why is it so difficult to find good help” and that brought him to the field of education where he hopes to train and inspire the next generation of students to be competitive in the industry. Allowing students to build the skills they need to be successful in the industry builds a student’s ability to enter a field strategically and have a longer career. Students are able to create real world content for industry professionals, building their skills, portfolio and network as they learn. Ryan sees production as a “team sport” and students each have a role and responsibility within their team to create highly produced content through project-based learning. Ryan wants students to know, industry is not out of reach, and they are the future of industry.
