It can be explained that there are two ways of sowing grain: One is that one’s tithes are his primary concern, but he still views the rest as something secondary (“All your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven”). This is Yitzchak’s “sowing grain” according to Nigleh. To this, Pirkei D’Rabbi Eliezer comes and says: “Chas v’shalom” to say that Yitzchak, one of the Avos (who “are the Divine chariot” and who had no independent existence whatsoever) sowed grain in such a manner. Rather, the whole existence of his sowing grain (his “ways”) was only a means to “know Him.” Similar to wrapping oneself in a tallis, which is merely the vessel for accepting the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven in practice etc. 3 excerpts from sichah of 19 Kislev 5725 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=08-11-2026

Synopsis

On the verse (in sheini of parashas Toldos), “Yitzchak sowed in that land, and in that year he found a hundredfold, and Hashem blessed him,” we find two interpretations that are seeming diametrically opposed from another: (1) Rashi, based on Midrashim, explains that Yitzchak sowed grain in the literal sense, and he found a hundredfold: “They estimated how much it ought to produce, and it produced one hundred times the amount they had estimated. And our Sages said that this estimation was for tithes.” (2) Pirkei D’Rabbi Eliezer states: “Did Yitzchak Avinu sow grain chas v’shalom?!” Rather, it means that he “sowed [the mitzvah of] tithes” (similar to the verse “He sows tzedakos”) – he separated tithes from his wealth.
