Synopsis

On the verse (in parashas Chayei Sarah), “The G-d of heaven, who took me away from my father’s house in Charan…”, Rashi states (as the plain meaning of the verse): “Now He is ‘G-d of heaven and G-d of the earth,’ because I have made Him familiar among humanity. But when He took me from my father’s house, He was ‘G-d of heaven,’ but not ‘G-d of the earth’ etc.” Everything in Torah serves as a lesson, and certainly this verse where Avraham Avinu himself describes the overall nature of his service of making the world a dwelling place for Hashem (and “The deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children”): Although Avraham already brought about that Hashem was “G-d of the earth” in his time, nevertheless (based on the teaching of our Sages that “man was created alone” to teach us that everyone must emulate Adam HaRishon and his service, which similarly applies to the service of the Avos and the obligation of every Jew to emulate them), every Jew must continue to cause Hashem to be “G-d of the earth.” And the novelty here is not merely that now, in addition to being “G-d of heaven” as before, He is also “G-d of the earth”; rather, when Hashem becomes “G-d of the earth,” now the concept of “G‑d of heaven” (i.e. that He is known in the heavens) is transformed to an incomparably higher degree.
