Synopsis
The Torah reading of the first day of Rosh Hashanah begins with “Hashem remembered Sarah…” (in revi’i of parashas Vayeira), when Hashem blessed Sarah with a son through whom the Jewish people would continue, and He fulfilled His promise in actuality. Similarly, Hashem blesses every Jew with children who will be called sons of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov and daughters who will be called daughters of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah, and He fulfills His promises. The Torah then describes the education Yitzchak received, to the point of mesiras-nefesh (at the Akeidah), and how Sarah in particular devoted herself to his education. Although he was the only Jewish child in his entire generation, and although she was by nature a kind person, even toward Arabs, she did not allow any of this to enter into consideration, and she protected him from any involvement with non-Jews and non-Jewish influences. It is specifically in this way that one merits that the child grows up in such a way that “I will abundantly increase your offspring” and that he brings true nachas his parents and to the entire Jewish people.
