Synopsis
The verse “You shall draw water with joy” teaches us that the water must be drawn with joy, but what is the reason for the extraordinary degree of joy, to the point that “Whoever did not see the rejoicing of the Beis Hashoevah never saw rejoicing in his life”? It can be explained that in order to exclude the view of the Tzedukim (who did not agree to the water libation), the Sages instituted that even the drawing of the water, which is only a preparation for the water libation, should be accompanied by exceptional joy. (Similar to the great publicity and public display associated with harvesting the Omer.) This is also why specifically for Simchas Beis Hashoevah a special arrangement was made so that women, too, could come and watch. In terms of Chassidus: Wine (which has taste) represents the service of Hashem based on reason and understanding, while water (which has no taste) represents the service based on kabbalas ol. More specifically: A Jew must serve Hashem with his intellect, but the beginning of his service must be in a manner of kabbalas ol. The preparation and foundation for Matan Torah was when the Jewish people said “We will do” before “We will listen,” contrary to logic, and the same applies to the beginning of every day. Similarly, Rosh Hashanah (the “head of the year”) is characterized by acceptance of the yoke of Heaven, and only afterward comes the service throughout the year based on reason etc. (To be continued.)
