In this episode of The Daily Derech, Rabbi Marcus Rubenstein explores Parashat Re’eh, Hilchot Tefillah, and a teaching from Menorat HaMaor about sincere repentance through grief over distancing oneself from God.

The Parashah section examines the transition from wilderness worship to centralized worship in the Land of Israel. Comparing Rashi and Ramban, Rabbi Rubenstein explains how communal life in the land required a more structured and permanent system of sacrifice, emphasizing that lasting holiness depends on shared discipline rather than personal spontaneity.

The Rambam teaches that prayers recited before their proper time generally do not fulfill one’s obligation, though exceptions exist for early morning prayer in extenuating circumstances and certain evening prayers, while the evening Shema must always be recited after nightfall.

The Menorat HaMaor teaches that complete repentance requires not only regret for wrongdoing but also grief over the damage sin causes to one’s relationship with God. This deeper emotional awareness strengthens both repentance and future commitment to mitzvot. :::
