Compensating for Missed Tefillah | August 5, 2026

See today's text here! In this episode of The Daily Derech, Rabbi Marcus Rubenstein explores Parashat Re’eh, Hilchot Tefillah, and a teaching from Menorat HaMaor about sanctifying speech. The parashah discusses bringing sacrifices only to God’s chosen place, permitting ordinary meat consumption outside the Temple, and the prohibition against consuming blood. Drawing from the Me’am Loez, Rabbi Rubenstein emphasizes that helping the poor means treating them as full members of the family, not as outsiders receiving charity. The Rambam explains that someone who unintentionally misses the Amidah may recite an additional Amidah immediately after the next scheduled prayer as compensation. This applies only to a single missed prayer and not to one missed intentionally. Menorat HaMaor teaches that human speech should be reserved for holy and necessary purposes. Because speech reflects our God-given intellect, we should avoid idle and forbidden words and use our mouths to elevate ourselves and others.
