362: The Biggest Mistakes We Made as Evangelicals (w/ Parker Manning)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by author and apologist Parker Manning to talk about some of the mistakes Evangelicals make when discussing, considering, and engaging with Catholicism. And this is deeply personal! I was drawn to Parker's book because many of these mistakes were the exact ones that I made as an Evangelical. Coming to recognize these mistakes is a large part of what made me consider Catholicism. We tackle topics like cherrypicking Scripture, misquoting the Early Church Fathers, picking and choosing which Christian traditions to believe in, misunderstanding arguments from silence and so much more – touching on topics of church hierarchy, Sola Scripture, and more! Check out Parker's book The Protestant Fallacies and read more of his articles from Catholic Answers. Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by author, speaker, and Bible teacher Melissa Overmyer to talk about her conversion to Catholicism. It's a wild story featuring one of the most amazing miracles I've ever heard – you're going to know when you hear it! Melissa shares the story of how, as a Baptist Bible teacher, and someone profoundly in love with Christ, she ended up converting to Catholicism – and how she loves the Catholic faith! It's a wild ride, buckle up. We tackle Joel's experience as a Christian musician, touring Protestant churches and recognizing a problem in their different and conflicting beliefs, we dig into the Early Church Fathers, issues of interpretation of Scripture, and some of the biggest barriers to becoming Catholic – plus so much more! 359: Why Are So Many People Becoming Catholic? (w/ Fr. Joseph-Anthony Kress, OP)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my new friend (and potential blood relative) Father Joseph-Anthony Kress, OP to talk about the surge of recent Catholic converts, the role of the saints and the rosary in this conversion wave, and why non-Catholic Christians considering Catholicism shouldn't be afraid of giving the rosary – an ancient, powerful prayer practice rooted in Scripture – a try! It's a great conversation with a wonderfully generous and cordial Dominican! The best kind! For more from Fr. Kress check out the Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage. 358: The Most Miraculous Conversion Story You'll Ever Hear (w/ Diane Pietras)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Diane Pietras to share the story of her incredible faith journey. Raised Catholic, Diane's story isn't the typical story of a Catholic convert from another faith tradition – although she does, indeed, become a non-denominational Evangelical at one point – but rather a story of proper conversion: of falling away and coming back to the faith, again and again. Diane's story is one of deep tragedy and trauma, of spiritual warfare and physical violence, of demons and dreams and visions, of incredible mystical experiences and a near-death encounter. It's an amazing story. Listener discretion advised: some content is not suitable for all listeners. Please do listen to Diane's daughter, Carolyn, in Episode 353 of the podcast. 357: Catholicism is More "Biblical" Than Protestant Christianity (w/ Dr. John Bergsma)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend theologian, Bible scholar, and former Protestant pastor Dr. John Bergsma to dig into one of the most nefarious misconceptions about the Catholic Church versus Protestantism and, cordially, share some of his shocking conclusions. Is Protestantism really more "Biblical" than Catholicism? Dr. Bergsma says, no. On topics of how the Church is organized, what worship looks like, what Jesus taught, how authority is passed on, and how decisions and interpretations of Scripture are made Dr. Bergsma shows, over and over again, that the Catholic Church is more closely aligned to Scripture than Protestantism at its very core. This is a truly fantastic episode! For more from Dr. Bergsma visit his website. Check out this book Stunned by Scripture from Our Sunday Visitor Press and his podcast of the same name. 356: From Christian Cult to the Catholic Church (w/ Deacon Mark Komula)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Deacon Mark Komula to share a conversion story like nothing you've ever heard before! Raised in the New Apostolic Church – a Christian sect (or cult) headed by a leader called the "Chief Apostle" – Mark was part of a dynamic and faithful family of devout "New Apostolics." His father, brother, and other extended family members were deeply involved in church leadership so it was no surprise that Mark became involved too. But it was when Mark met a Catholic theology professor, began to look into the Early Church, and began to ask questions about Communion following some doctrinal changes in the New Apostolic Church, he realized that things he'd believed and taught faithfully all of his life didn't quite add up. This and so much more is part of Deacon Mark's conversion story this week on the show. For more from Deacon Mark please check out his website. You can also follow him on Facebook and Instagram. 354: A New Age Guru Discovers the Catholic Church (w/ Brandy Babcock)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend Brandy Babcock to tell the incredible story of her conversion – from a New Age Guru to a devout Catholic sharing and teaching the faith to others – it's an incredible tale! Brandy was a bonafide New Age practitioner, a teacher of teachers, paying the bills by running her own courses and classes, teaching hundreds to channel and practice a variety of psychic and healing energies until she discovered Jesus, the Bible, and Christianity. From there, Brandy's radar for what's Real and True led her to question the Protestant version of Christianity that she first encountered and it was then that the discovered the ancient Catholic Church! Her story, in all of its incredible twists and turns, is one that you don't want to miss! Please find and follow Brandy on Instagram and YouTube. Check out the Catholic Converts group on Facebook. 353: A Miraculous Journey Back into the Catholic Church (w/ Carolyn Dunlap)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Carolyn Dunlap, who's here to share her miraculous, miracle-filled, mystical journey into the Catholic Church. Carolyn's story, as she says, begins before she was even born and the miracles that punctuate her birth story seem to follow her throughout the rest of her lives: miraculous visions, encounters with Christ, and a throughly entertaining and edifying journey! 352: From Church of Christ to the Church Christ Founded (w/ Eric Rudolph)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Catholic convert Eric Rudolph to talk about his journey as a Bible-loving, small-town Church of Christ Christian into the Catholic Church. Eric is warm, funny, and a great storyteller and his story is a fantastic one. From a deep faith and love for the Bible it would be an encounter with his future wife – a cradle Catholic – that would lead him to reading start the Catechism of the Catholic Church in an attempt to prove that her doctrines and dogmas weren't correct. Eric was surprised by what he found – a deeply biblical church that traced its origins back to Christ and an entire history – with martyrs and saints – that he had no idea even existed! 351: How a Founder of the Vineyard Church Became Catholic (w/ Steve Sjogren)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined, for an absolutely remarkable conversation, by Steve Sjogren, the founding pastor of one of the most influential churches in America, the Vineyard Church Cincinnati, to talk about his conversion to Catholicism. Steve not only founded and pastored one of the most influential churches in America, but was one of the founding pastors of the Vineyard Church movement from the beginning – worshipping alongside the likes of Bob Dylan and Keith Green in the earliest incarnation of the charismatic church movement in Los Angeles. Steve's story is one of servant leadership, radical evangelization, and following the Holy Spirit wherever he was led – including right into full communion with the Catholic Church. 349: How the Eucharist Changes Everything! (w/ Father Gregory Pine, OP)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined after a four year long hiatus, by the one and only Father Gregory Pine, OP to talk about the Eucharist. We dig deeply on the sacrificial nature of the Mass, the Catholic understanding of the Eucharist, and how, truly, an understanding of the 2,000-year old tradition of Christ's Real Presence in the Eucharist, available at every Catholic Church in the world, is an absolute game changer. Plus, we talk about Eucharistic adoration, how the "altar call" in Charismatic Christianity finds its fulfilment in a real altar, and we learn that Father Gregory is a "medium-sized" hugger. Good to know. For more from Father Gregory you can check out his book Your Eucharistic Identity: A Sacramental Guide to the Fulness of Life from Ignatius Press. Raised with some Catholic background, Eyram became a passionate Evangelical Christian, deeply involved in campus ministry as a young adult. It was an encounter with his future wife, a Catholic, on a secular dating app, that he was first found himself asking questions about Catholicism, digging deeper into the doctrine and dogma and the Early Church Fathers, and making some shocking discoveries! 347: Making Catholics Into Disciples of Christ (w/ Father Sammie Maletta)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Father Sammie Maletta, author and long-time pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in St. John, Indiana to talk about making Catholics into intentional disciples of Christ. With decades of experience in pastoral ministry, Fr. Maletta brings a wealth of experience and knowledge on why some parishes and parishioners are filled with the Spirit while others are asleep at the wheel, what it takes to move a casual Catholic into discipleship, and what makes Catholicism so appealing to potential converts and non-Catholic Christians. We dig in deeply into the world is discipleship through a Catholic lens with an eye to our non-Catholic brothers and sisters who are wondering, as many do: Can Catholics really be disciples of Christ?! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined once again by my friend and world renown researched and bibliophile Gary Michuta to talk about the Old Testament prophecies fulfilled by Christ. Geared towards defending our Catholic Christian faith, Gary's new work, diving deep into the prophecies fulfilled by Jesus, is meant to equip the reader (and listener) with some incredible knowledge about exactly what the Jewish people thought about Jesus, the plan for salvation that God had from the start, and how the entire Bible centres so richly on Christ. It's an amazing conversation. You'll learn so much! For more from Gary visit his website where you can buy his fantastic books on this topic. You can get Messiah: Old Testament Prophecies Fulfilled in Christ from the St. Paul Center. Also check out his fantastic YouTube channel. Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. 344: The Protestant Book That Makes Catholic Converts (w/ Dr. Andrew Swafford)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend Dr. Andrew Swafford to talk about C.S. Lewis' masterpiece The Great Divorce and how this Protestant book creates so many questions and so many conversions to Catholicism with its incredible picture of purgatory. We talk about the Catholic understanding of purgatory, participation with Christ, suffering, and how C.S. Lewis presents a vision of the afterlife that simply doesn't line up with Protestant theology – and leaves many Protestants asking questions that just can't be answered outside of the ancient faith traditions like Catholicism. For more from Dr. Swafford check out his book Next Stop: The Afterlife or his other fine books on C.S. Lewis from Ave Maria Press. 343: An Evangelical Author Finds Christ in Catholicism (w/ Traci Rhoades)

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by author Traci Rhoades to talk about her remarkable faith journey into the Catholic Church. Traci is a brilliant and insightful writer who I first met as someone exploring the different roots of Christian traditions. When I heard that Traci had, in fact, become Catholic I knew I needed to have her on the show! Traci's story is a fantastic one – and she's a great storyteller. From trying to incorporate the ancient elements of Christianity into her non-denominational church to realizing, ultimately, that those elements can only be rightly found in the most ancient churches, it's a wonderful story of following Christ to the absolute ends of where he leads, and a lovely tale of family and faith, too. For more from Traci visit her website. Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. Sign up for our newsletter for my reflections on episodes, behind-the-scenes content, and exclusive contests.
