The First Waterford Men to Win All-Ireland Medals

All-Ireland winners’ medals are a rare currency in the Gentle County and certainly in the code of Gaelic football. Na Déise’s sole appearance in an All-Ireland Senior Men’s final came in the 1898 championship. However, the 1900 All-Ireland football winners were neighbouring Tipperary, who boasted 8 players from the Clonmel Shamrocks club. Two of whom were from County Waterford, Jack Dwan (Fourmilewater) and Larry Tobin (The Nire). Both noted as the first Waterford men to win All-Ireland medals, they both made important contributions to their adopted Clonmel. Cian Manning is gently stoking the competitive historical sporting history of Waterford in today's look back at fascinating stories of Waterford people. You can listen back to Cian and catch him every Wednesday on The Big Breakfast Blaa after the news at 9am. Riley: A Tribute to The Best Boy, The Best Friend

There are some dogs who are pets, and then there are dogs who become part of the very fabric of a family. Riley was one of those dogs. He was Ollie’s dog, his companion, his shadow and, without question, his very best friend. There are heavy hearts around the Broadcast Centre today as everyone remembers a very special member of Ollie’s family, who has left what the late, great Seamus Heaney described as a “sunlit absence” in a home and in the hearts of those who loved him. Just months short of his 15th birthday on Christmas Day, Riley went to sleep after almost 15 years of giving Ollie and his family the kind of love that only a dog can give. And Riley had quite the personality. Regular listeners to The Big Breakfast Blaa will know that Ollie enjoys nothing more than getting stuck into a few outdoor jobs around the garden. But on one particular day, with a chainsaw in hand, Riley decided his beloved owner was in serious danger. Hearing the chainsaw nearby, Riley wasn't taking any chances. He spotted an open window upstairs, launched himself out and bravely made his way towards his best friend. Whether Ollie actually needed rescuing from the chainsaw is up for debate. But in Riley’s eyes, there was no debate whatsoever. That was love. That was loyalty. That was unconditional friendship. Riley was there for the late nights, the walks, the quiet moments and all the ordinary days that, over almost 15 years, became a lifetime of memories. He was Ollie’s walking companion, his shadow, his constant presence and, naturally, a great lover of a good quality bed. He was also a regular character in the stories shared on air, and although listeners may never have met him, many will feel like they knew him through Ollie’s stories. Riley will be deeply missed from Ollie’s home, from his garden and from those everyday moments that suddenly feel very different. For anyone who has ever lost a beloved dog, you know the particular heartbreak that comes with saying goodbye to a friend who has been there through so many chapters of your life. Riley wasn't just a dog. He was Ollie’s best friend. And he really was the best boy. Listen back to Ollie’s tribute to Riley, and remember a very special dog who was loved very, very much. Ardscoil na Mara Students Get Their Hands On The Future Of Farming

Two Waterford students are taking on a unique challenge that will see them rear five Angus calves while researching the future of sustainable beef production. Daniel O’Neill and Edward Moore from Ardscoil Na Mara in Waterford are among five finalist groups selected for this year’s Certified Irish Angus Schools’ Competition. The students were presented with their Angus calves at the National Ploughing Championships by broadcaster and social media personality James Kavanagh. Ardscoil na Mara Project Over the next 18 months, Daniel and Edward will be responsible for rearing their calves as part of the competition, while also carrying out a research project focused on reducing carbon emissions in beef production through genomics and sustainable farming practices. The Ardscoil na Mara students are competing against finalists from Cavan, Cork, Donegal and Kilkenny, with each group taking on a different research theme linked to the future of Irish agriculture. A new element of this year's competition will also see the students receive one-to-one mentorship from senior figures with expertise across the agricultural and food sectors. Mentors include representatives from Bord Bia, the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Tesco Ireland and Teagasc. Finalists receive the proceeds from the sale of the animals at the end of the project, while the overall winners receive an additional €2,000 grant towards further education. Applications are also now open for the next cycle of the competition, with Transition Year students able to apply until October 31st. For Daniel and Edward, the next 18 months will be about much more than simply looking after the calves, as they explore how technology, genetics and sustainable farming practices could help shape the future of beef production in Ireland. Women whip off the bras for Westlife

Last night, Westlife took to the stage at the 3Arena in Dublin while a host of women littered the stage at their feet with bras. Grace, Ellen, and Mary Goes Nowhere were there (bras fully intact) and they reported back live to The Big Breakfast Blaa. Clad in their custom-made dressing gowns adorned with the floating heads of the Westlife singers, they painted a picture of a night featuring Garret Noone, Westlife, Mary's rollator (featuring lights and decorations) and matching pink hats. Ellen was quick to confirm at at €70 a pop, her bra was not being presented to Westlife, but they definitely danced and sang the night away. Play to listen back in full and soak up the atmosphere. Waterford Buses to be 'Agents of Craic' tomorrow

Tomorrow night to mark Culture Night, Waterford buses are to become 'agents of craic' between 6pm and 8pm. Commuters on the W1, W2, and W3 routes will see the bus transformed into a rolling musical and poetry stage. Musicians and poets will perform on the bus during its regular Friday evening commute on those routes and passengers are encouraged to bring along their favourite poem or to sing along. Prizes, lollipops are treats will be available for those who take part in the evening through contributing something on the night. Gráinne Kennedy is the Climate Action Officer with Waterford City and County Council and the entire event is her brainchild. Speaking on The Big Breakfast Blaa, she said she was inspired by videos of commuters in cities like London and New York who embrace ways to make the commute more exciting. Using examples like dressing up as Santa or holding fun signs, she said she knew Waterford was the place that would embrace a mad-cap idea like this. Creative Ireland got behind the initiative which incorporates positives steps for sustainability and introducing culture in an unexpected way. She was sure to give a big shout out to Bus Eireann and the bus drivers, who will be kept very entertained for a few hours on Culture Night, Friday September 18th. Forward selling the idea on air, Gráinne said the buses will be transformed into 'agents of craic' for one night only. Play to listen back in full. WLR Celebrates World Barber Day!

Today, September 16th is World Barber Day and we have been celebrating on The Big Breakfast Blaa! Ahmed from A-Class Barbers joined Geoff and Dymphna in studio to mark the opening of his second barbershop in Waterford City. He now proudly runs two outlets on Conduit Lane and Patrick Street offering the full Turkish Barber experience. Ahmed explained the whole lot from start to finish, even giving Geoff a bit of advice on whether the popular mullet is a good one for him to revisit! Did the Justice System Fail Waterford’s Conny Mernin?

A notorious figure in Waterford city, Conny Mernin made national news on several occasions for his daring escapes from both Ballybricken and Clonmel jails. A life of crime began at an early age, his first arrest occurred when he was only 11-years-old. However, did a spell in reformatory and the penal system contribute to Mernin’s criminal activities rather than reform and rehabilitate him? Repeated attempts to better his lot appeared to be exacerbated by the society in which he inhabited… This is a truly sorry tale from the history books of Waterford on the harshness of the justice system and how it seems to have failed Conny Mernin and sealed his fate in life. Listen back to the full story with resident historian Cian Manning, on air every Wednesday morning just after the news at 9.
