The Declaration of Independence Was More Radical Than You Think (THROWBACK EPISODE)

Original Airdate: Jul 4, 2026 As America celebrates the Fourth of July and begins commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of our nation, it's worth remembering that this wasn't simply the birth certificate of a new nation. It was one of the most audacious political documents ever written. In a world where kings claimed to rule by God's authority, the Declaration asserted something astonishing: that governments derive "their just powers from the consent of the governed," that every person possesses inherent rights, and that no ruler stands above those principles. Those ideas were revolutionary in 1776, and they remain revolutionary today. When you look beyond the familiar words, you realize just how radical the Declaration really was. The Founders weren't merely objecting to taxes or demanding better treatment from the British Crown. They rejected the entire idea that power flows downward from a monarch and replaced it with the proposition that political authority flows upward from the people. That principle is the foundation of American liberty, and it is always under pressure from those who would concentrate power in a single leader, demand personal loyalty over constitutional principle, or convince citizens to trade freedom for the promise of order. Demagogues, kings, and would-be tyrants thrive when people forget where legitimate power comes from.As our nation approaches its 250th birthday, the question isn't whether we still admire the Founders - it's whether we still believe in the radical ideas they risked everything to proclaim. In an era when Donald Trump increasingly acts as though he is above the law and entitled to personal obedience, those ideas deserve to be read, understood, and defended. The Founders left us more than a country - they left us a responsibility. Governments derive their just powers from our consent, and preserving liberty requires citizens willing to stand against demagogues, kings, and tyrants. Please check us out on Patreon and Substack.(patreon.com/TalkingPoliticsWithMom)(talkingpoliticswithmom.substack.com)

What Happens to Republicans After Trump? (With Cody Johnston)

Original Airdate: May 28, 2026 Donald Trump successfully conducted a hostile takeover of the Republican Party in the lead-up to the 2016 election - and the Republican Party and MAGA have been synonymous ever since. But really, Trump was always the final form of the Republican Party - a party with unpopular ideas that serves the rich elite, and uses culture war issues, dog whistles and demagoguery to solidify their base. Trump just did it better. But eventually, Trump will be gone... what happens to Republicans when that day finally comes? In this episode of Talking Politics With Mom, mom and I are joined by my longtime friend and colleague Cody Johnston, host of Some More News (@SMN), to ask this question: what happens to the Republican Party after Donald Trump is gone? We break down Trump’s collapsing approval ratings, Tucker Carlson suddenly trying to distance himself from MAGA, and why the GOP may be facing a full-blown identity crisis. We also talk about JD Vance, Project 2025, right-wing populism, Republican propaganda, and whether anyone can actually replace Trump as the face of the modern conservative movement. My mom brings the historical perspective, tracing the Republican Party from the rise of corporate power and the Southern Strategy all the way to today’s MAGA movement. We talk about oligarchs, culture war politics, anti-immigrant rhetoric, Fox News, fascism, and why Republicans keep rebranding the same unpopular ideas. Cody also explains why Trump was the “final form” of the GOP brand - a celebrity salesman who could package extreme politics in a way nobody else really can.But this episode isn’t just about Republicans. We also get into the failures of the Democratic Party, why so many voters feel politically homeless, and what kind of leadership America actually needs right now: a vision for the future. Please let us know what you think in the comments - Can the Republicans survive after Trump? And make sure to check us out on Patreon and Substack:( / talkingpoliticswithmom )(https://talkingpoliticswithmom.substa...)And check out ‪@SMN‬ on Youtube and Cody's band, The Hot Shapes on Soundcloud.( / thehotshapes )

Tennessee Republicans Have Nothing to Offer — So They Cheat (THROWBACK EPISODE)

Original Airdate: May 21, 2026 This week on Talking Politics with Mom, we sat down with Tennessee congressional candidate, Victoria Broderick, who is running as an unapologetic progressive in a state Republicans love to write off as “deep red,” but as she explains in this episode: Tennessee isn’t a red state - it's an abandoned state - it’s a voter-suppressed state. We talked about Republican gerrymandering, attacks on voting rights, purging voters from the rolls, and the way the GOP keeps people disengaged while corporate politicians abandon working-class communities. Victoria breaks down why young voters, disillusioned Democrats, independents, and even some Republicans are starting to rally behind authentic candidates who actually speak to people’s real struggles instead of repeating consultant-approved talking points. We also got into what it means to run a grassroots progressive campaign in the South while the Republican Party doubles down on culture war distractions, Medicaid cuts, attacks on reproductive freedom, and billionaire tax breaks. Victoria talks openly about why she refuses to water down her message just to chase conservative approval, and why voters are responding to someone who sounds like a real person instead of another polished political robot. From healthcare and economic inequality to Roe v. Wade, labor rights, voter turnout, and the future of democracy in Tennessee, this episode is for anyone frustrated with establishment politics and looking for candidates who actually want structural change. One of the biggest takeaways for me was hearing someone from a heavily gerrymandered Southern district say flat-out that Democrats can compete in places they’ve abandoned - if they stop running scared and start giving people something real to vote for. Victoria’s story is inspiring: working mom, activist, progressive organizer, no corporate PAC money, and now taking on one of the most entrenched Republicans in Tennessee politics.Drop a comment with your thoughts, subscribe to Talking Politics with Mom, and make sure to share this episode with anyone who still thinks progressive politics can’t make a difference in the South.(https://www.victoria4tennessee.org/)

The Costs of War You Don’t See Until It’s Too Late (THROWBACK EPISODE)

Original Airdate: Apr 7, 2026 In this episode, we break down the reality behind the current U.S. conflict with Iran and ask the question few are really answering: why are we at war in the first place? Through a powerful conversation with a Marine veteran, we explore the growing tensions, the political narratives surrounding the Iran war, and how history, from Vietnam to Iraq, can help us understand what’s happening right now. If you’re trying to make sense of the latest war news, this discussion goes beyond the headlines. But this isn’t just about geopolitics - it’s about the human cost of war. From 18-year-olds preparing wills before deployment to veterans returning home with lifelong trauma, we dive into the hidden costs of war that are rarely talked about in mainstream media. This episode sheds light on PTSD, the long-term impact on families, and the broken promises many service members face when they come home. It’s a raw and honest look at what war really does to people. We also examine the financial cost of war, including billions in military spending, the role of the military-industrial complex, and what that money could mean for healthcare, education, and working-class Americans instead. As debates continue around U.S. foreign policy, war with Iran, and government priorities, this conversation challenges viewers to think critically about where we are headed - and who ultimately pays the price. Please follow Matt ‪@usmcangryveteran‬ and check us out on Patreon and Substack!(https://talkingpoliticswithmom.substa...)( / talkingpoliticswithmom )

    My Mom's Emergency Room Nightmare...

Original Airdate: Mar 26, 2026 Don't worry! Mom is ok. But our health-care system isn't... After a sudden medical emergency, my mom took her spouse who was in severe pain, to the emergency room and they were left waiting in a crowded ER for hours - despite being in one of the wealthiest areas in the country. What's happening in the ER is the canary in the coal mine when it comes to our health-care system. The wait times are growing, there is a lack of primary care access, overwhelmed hospitals, and more and more people are relying on emergency rooms for basic healthcare needs. We explore the bigger picture behind this healthcare crisis, including the rise of private equity in healthcare, hospital understaffing, and why patients are delaying care due to high costs. And the Republicans are just making this worse! Medicaid cuts, health insurance failures, and the increasing shortage of doctors are all contributing to a system where people are forced to wait until conditions become life-threatening. This isn’t just one story - but it’s part of a nationwide trend. This system consistently puts profit over people - and the cuts in the Big Beautiful Bill are going to make this dynamic even worse. Please tell us your own experience with the healthcare system in the comments, because I'm sure my mom's recent experience is just the tip of the iceberg...Please check us out on Patreon and Substack.(talkingpoliticswithmom.substack.com)(patreon.com/TalkingPoliticsWithMom)Also - wish mom a Happy Birthday!

    Did Feminism Make Women Unhappy?

Original Airdate: Feb 12, 2026 Six months ago, my mom and I posted a video called The Dark Secrets of 1950s America - and it struck a nerve. We heard from so many of you about your mothers and grandmothers… but we also got serious pushback. A lot of it centered around one big claim that’s been gaining traction online: Feminism made women miserable. In this episode, we dig into that argument head-on.From Candace Owens’ debate on Jubilee to viral TikToks about the Rockefellers' secretly engineering the women’s movement, there’s a growing narrative on the right that the sexual revolution and second-wave feminism destroyed the family, pushed women into “wage slavery,” and robbed them of fulfillment. My mom, who grew up in the 1950s, brings personal stories, historical context, and some sharp political analysis to unpack what’s myth, what’s real, and what’s being deliberately distorted. We talk about what the 1950s were actually like for different women, the economic policies that made the single-income household possible (and why they disappeared), and why blaming feminism for today’s unaffordable, hyper-corporate economy misses the real culprits. If you’re frustrated with the cost of living, stagnant wages, or feeling trapped in the modern workforce... you’re not wrong. But the question is: who benefits from convincing you that feminism is the reason? This conversation is about choice, economic power, unions, corporate greed, the New Deal era, Reaganomics, and how resentment can be channeled into political movements that distort reality and weaponize very real grievances against the very people fighting to improve your lives... in service of the people and ideologies who are exploiting you for their power and profit.Let us know what you think in the comments. They Lied to Our Faces About Renee Good's Killing (THROWBACK EPISODE)

Original Airdate: Jan 11, 2026 The murder of Renee Good by ICE was a warning. In broad daylight, in her own neighborhood, a young mother and volunteer legal observer was shot and killed by an ICE agent while documenting federal actions. Within minutes, government officials rolled out a prewritten narrative falsely branding her a violent threat and calling the killing “self-defense,” despite video evidence that clearly shows otherwise. This episode is about the deliberate use of state violence followed by an aggressive campaign of lies and gaslighting. In this conversation, Adrienne Larkin (mom) and Will Gordh (child) place Renee’s murder in its historical and political context: the rise of unaccountable federal power, the normalization of militarized law enforcement in American cities, and the dangerous idea that federal agents are above the law. From the murder of Fred Hampton, to Kent State to the present moment, history shows us what happens when governments redefine citizens as “enemy combatants” and grant their agents implicit (and explicit) permission to act without consequences. The language of “absolute immunity” is not a legal argument - it is a signal. This moment demands clarity, not fear or silence. Accountability, transparency, and public pressure are the only tools that have ever successfully curbed authoritarian overreach in this country. Renee Good stood up for people with less power and paid the ultimate price. Honoring her means refusing to accept lies, demanding independent investigations, and shining sunlight where those in power want darkness. This is not about left or right - it is about whether Americans still believe that no one has a license to kill.(https://talkingpoliticswithmom.substa...)( / talkingpoliticswithmom )

Why Latinos Voted for Trump, and Then Abandoned Him (THROWBACK EPISODE)

Original Air Date: Dec 16, 2025 The fact that Trump made huge gain in the share of the Latino vote has confounded many pundits politicians, especially considering the fact that he ran such a racist and xenophobic campaign specifically targeting Latinos. But it turns out that the Latino population is incredibly diverse, and ironically, it may have been that very demonization strategy that helped him gain support. But in the last November election - it seems that all of those gains have been lost. While some of this can be attributed to the absolutely horrific actions of ICE - there's even more going on here. But don't just take my word for it!We invited Sylvia Salazar ‪@TonoLatino‬ on to the show because, being a Latino immigrant herself and a generally smart person looking into these issues for years, we knew she could provide us with some much needed context and analysis to help us understand the "Latino Voter."We also discuss my mom's background growing up in an ltalian immigrant household - and some of the commonalities of the immigrant experience in America, and also how bad actors, conservatives, and the wealthy elite are able to sow divisions in the population in order to advance their agenda of Oligarchy.Make sure to check out Sylvia's new show Breaking the Feed with Sylvia Salazar ‪@DangerousOnes‬And check out our new Substack Channel!(https://talkingpoliticswithmom.substa...)

Mom’s Kids Are Furious With Clueless Dems

Millions of people took to the streets to oppose Trump and his fascism during the No Kings protests, and then they came out and voted for Democrats in massive numbers during the last election - in large part because they supported the fact that the Democrats were standing up to the Trump regime during the government shutdown and demanding that the ACA subsidies be extended... and then before we knew it - eight Democrats joined the Republicans and caved. It's this kind of thing that turns people off from politics altogether. For many it felt like a betrayal. Obviously the Republicans are worse - but many millennials are demanding that Democrats fight the GOP with the urgency that this moment requires. For many young people - life is simply unaffordable - housing, health care, child care, education have created an affordability crisis and millennials are facing the fact that their prospects are not as good as their parents. To add insult to injury - the oligarchy continues to get richer and we are now facing a two tiered economy - one for the rich - and one for everyone else. And technologies like AI threaten to make everything worse. The super wealthy are making the American Dream out of reach... and instead of addressing this - Trump and his authoritarian regime are instead blaming marginalized people and spending billions through ICE to terrorize our neighbors. This is a crisis! But Chuck Schumer and others in the Democratic establishment seem to be unequipped for the moment - they seem to be out of touch cowards who are completely clueless about what Americans are going through and what this moment requires. And so, for the first time ever, all of mom's kids join the podcast the express their frustration and fury with a party that is not treating this moment with the urgency it demands.Make sure to check us out on Patreon: ( / talkingpoliticswithmom ) And check out ‪youtube.com/manboynice‬ for politics and history through the lens of culture, art, and the horror genre.

Why the Hell Did Farmers Vote for Trump?

American farmers voted for Trump by huge margins... even though he campaigned on a tariff policy that was certain to start a trade war and hurt their exports of stuff like soy beans to China. He also promised to deport "illegal immigrants" (undocumented workers) who make up a large percentage of the farm sector's labor force. But they voted for him anyway - why? There is a narrative out there that they were lied to... but our guest, Sarah Taber (a farmer herself) exposes the real reasons farmers voted for Trump, and reveals that the American farmer is much different than the image we all have in our head... they are much wealthier on average than most people think.Mom and I discuss with Sarah the reality of farming in America - the H-2A visa program (which has been exploited by some contractors to the point that their practices qualify as slavery) and we discuss the possibility of a looming bailout... Should American farmers be bailed out or suffer the consequences of making a bad bet?Make sure to follow Sarah:‪https://www.youtube.com/@FarmToTaber

The TRUTH About Columbus Day Will Shock You

Columbus Day, once an innocuous holiday (for some), has in recent years become a flash point for our never-ending culture war. Many (rightly) point out that Christopher Columbus was an evil man - and unleashed a genocide on Native Americans unparalleled in human history. While others (wrongly) want to celebrate this man as an American hero, who sailed the ocean blue in 1492, etc... and deny the atrocities associated with his legacy. But there is more to the history of the formation of this holiday that is worth discussing. A little known history that involves race, class, power, and the largest mass lynching in American history. It is a story about White Supremacy, and how the rich and powerful divide people to make a profit. It is a story that celebrates Italian Immigrants... It is a story that asks: who is allowed to be considered an American, and why? It is a story that continues to this day - as federal ICE agents terrorize immigrant communities as they police entry into the American story.

Did Trump & Hegseth Just Declare War on America?

Pete Hegseth renamed the Department of Defense the Department of War, and has said that the Military's sole mission is "war fighting." Meanwhile, Donald Trump has mused about "the war within" and sent federal troops into even more cities across America, including Portland and Chicago, and threatened to arrest elected officials if they don't cooperate. ICE continues to terrorize immigrants and citizens alike - raiding apartment buildings and acting like a bunch of thugs. And Trump has even threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act (oh the irony!) to bypass the judges who have blocked his misuse of force. They continue to fear monger about crime, carting out classic racists tropes to justify their extreme measures. This is what a fascist authoritarian takeover looks like.A couple months ago, we talked with our friend Matt - a Marine Veteran following the DC military takeover - and things have just gotten worse since then. In fact - we seem to be on a war footing with Venezuela, which could give Trump even more power to silence and purge his domestic enemies. So we thought it would be a good idea to check back in with Matt, who is currently protesting the National Guard deployment in Washington DC to see how we can resist this blatant power grab. Please follow Matt and his comrades who are doing amazing work fighting back against a looming dictatorship. @usmcangryveteran @Jolly_good_ginger @usarmyoverlord

Charlie Kirk’s Murder & the Authoritarian Crackdown on Free Speech

A little over 2 weeks ago, Charlie Kirk was murdered while speaking in front of thousands of people - and a video of the horrific act spread across the internet. The event has shaken the nation - and created an atmosphere of tension and fear. But instead of trying to ease that tension and fear, and try to unify the country - Trump, his administration and the Right Wing media have instead ratcheted up the tension and used this horrific act to blame their political enemies - pushing a narrative that the rhetoric of the lunatic left Democrats has radicalized a network of trans Antifa terrorists - and is the cause of this political violence… labelling not just people who were insensitive in the aftermath of Kirk’s assassination - but anyone who disagreed with the things he promoted throughout his career - as complicit in his murder.Of course, the Republican Party and Trump specifically would never engage in violent or extreme rhetoric or the demonization of their opponents… quick side note - on the same day that Kirk was shot there was another school shooting in Colorado committed by a White Supremacist… oh, also Democratic lawmakers were murdered back in June in Minnesota by an anti-abortion activist. And yet, with another shooting the other day at an ICE facility in Dallas - the Trump administration has become even further emboldened to use the full force of the Federal Government to silence their critics, go after their enemies - and further entrench their, yes, authoritarian, power. Using the FCC to force Jimmy Kimmel off the air, and attack our freedom of speech. They've labeled antifa a terrorist organization, they indicted James Comey, they are going after the funding of Democrats - and they are saying that anyone who criticizes ICE are promoting violence against law enforcement. Trump, JD Vance, Stephen Miller, Pete Hegseth, Cash Patel, and the Right Wing media apparatus that supports them are intentionally adding gasoline to the fire in order to justify their authoritarian purge of their political enemies. It's kinda fascist to be honest...Things are bleak folks. And the nation feels more divided than ever - which is, of course, their goal. But are we really as divided as it feels? And is there a way for us to come back together on the things we can all agree on? Well it starts by engaging in some truth telling. So that’s what my mom and I are going to try to do today - because she has lived through the era of extreme political violence of the 1960s - and being a former conservative in the McCarthy era - knows full well the authoritarian playbook for attacking free speech - so I think she can provide us with some valuable insight into this moment in our history.( / talkingpoliticswithmom )

DC Takeover: Is Trump Grooming America To Accept Martial Law? | Talking Politics With Mom | Episode 14

Donald Trump has deployed federal agents and the national guard into Washington D.C. to take over the local law enforcement to supposedly combat crime in the city, despite the fact that crime rates are at historic lows. He already did something similar in Los Angeles. These actions, in combination with the massive increase to the ICE budget and activity have us a little bit worried... So we reached out to our friend Matt, aka ‪@usmcangryveteran‬ to help give us some perspective. Is Trump preparing the US population to accept martial law? Will he extend military occupation to other cities? How far will this fascist authoritarian power grab go? Just how worried should we be?Please show Matt some love and follow him on Youtube, TikTok, Instagram, Substack, etc. - usmcangryveteran(https://linktr.ee/usmcangryveteran)And please consider contributing to us on Patreon:( / talkingpoliticswithmom )

They Regret Voting for Trump... Now What? Talking Politics With Mom | Episode 13

Trump Regret is real... whether it's because they had a family member deported, their business is suffering because of tariffs, they are on the brink of losing their healthcare, or they are mad that the Epstein Files haven't been released - former Donald Trump supporters are regretting their vote. And some are even going online and confessing their transgression, and trying to make amends for the mistake they made. So what now? Those of us who saw this all coming have a variety of responses. One of the most common reactions, propagated by creators and commenters alike is that of FAFO... it serves you right! These are the consequences of voting for fascism. But is that doing any good? Is that going to help us defeat MAGA? Should we just forgive and forget? Or tell them that it serves them right? That these are the natural consequences for their actions... They didn't seem to care when we all told them that this was going to happen, or they thought it was going to happen to someone else... so why should we show them any sympathy now?Luckily, we have a former conservative who can provide us some insight into the mindset of a conservative, and can help illuminate the process of deconstruction and conversion from an ideology of hierarchy based on lies - to a place of empathy, compassion, and truth. The journey is not a straight line. And the fact is that we are in an emergency... there is a limited window of time to stem the tide of authoritarianism... and it is going to require a broad coalition of people to fight that fight. The demagogue wants us to fight amongst ourselves, but we need to stop looking at our neighbor - and look up at the oligarchs who threaten all of us.If you someone who regrets your vote for Trump - please consider visiting the following sites:(https://indivisible.org/)(https://leavingmaga.org/)(https://www.nokings.org/)And if you are getting something out of our work - please consider supporting us on patreon.(https://www.patreon.com/talkingpoliticswithmom)

How Transphobia Harms Women's Sports | Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 12

There IS a threat to women and girls sports in America, but it's not coming from trans people. It turns out that the real threat is the anti-trans movement itself. That, and of course, money. Participation in youth sports in particular is increasingly becoming a privilege afforded only to the wealthy. And the nexus between money and bigotry is harming women and girl's sports far more than the participation of a small number of people in a heavily discriminated group ever could...Transphobes like Riley Gaines act as if they are protecting women, but they are actually putting a target on the back of elite women athletes - as demonstrated by her recent fight with Simone Biles. And the arguments from these anti-trans activists really fall apart when they decry the participation of trans women in a game like pool (that offers them no perceivable advantage) and continue to rail against a trans girl (AB Hernandez) even after a California rule change ensured that no cis girls would lose their spot on the podium. And their hypocrisy is made even more clear when they are nowhere to be found when a 16 year old Black girl named Clara Adams is stripped of her title for her victory celebration.Transphobia and Misogyny are inextricably linked, and this agenda, heavily funded and expertly enacted by far right groups has made it's way all the way up to President Trump. And the agenda is clear - they want to police women - and send our nation back to the 1950s.(http://www.patreon.com/talkingpoliticswithmom)

Why My Mom Changed Her Mind About Trans Athletes in Women’s Sports | Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 11

My mom loved sports growing up, in fact we was very good at them. But there were very few opportunities for elite women's athletes when she grew up. She spent a good portion of her life trying to help create a world that would create more opportunities for women in sports. So when the trans athletes in women's sports debate popped up - she came to that issue with a lot of strong emotions stemming from her past that influenced her opinion on the controversy. But she decided that she would try to move beyond her initial reaction and get to the bottom of the issue... and what she discovered is that the same people that restricted her opportunities when she was younger - are the same people doing it to trans people today... and they wont stop there.Either everybody matters, or nobody matters.( www.patreon.com/talkingpoliticswithmom)

How My Mom Overcame Her Prejudice | Talking Politics With Mom | Episode 10

In the very first episode of this show - we examined the source of my mom's conservative ideology - which largely came from red-scare propaganda about how secret communists were plotting to destroy America... But it was clear in that discussion that my mom had also internalized many of the lies sold to her about race.Since that first episode - my mom has reflected on those beliefs, and she has asked herself some difficult questions about why she held onto those beliefs for as long as she did.The truth is that racial prejudice, bigotry, and racism - whatever you want to call it - particularly among individuals, is more complex than we sometimes acknowledge. As a nation, we adopt a certain set of values and ideals that are hard to shake... particularly around the meritocracy. And we are also denied the uncomfortable reality of our history of discrimination, coupled with the denial of the important role of government action on advantaging certain groups, while denying opportunity for others. But ultimately - my mom changed her perspective - and this video explores that transformation.( www.patreon.com/talkingpoliticswithmom)

DEI - Deceive, Enrich, Inflame | Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 09

The concept of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) has become an all-purpose scapegoat for Republicans in recent years - responsible for everything from the LA fires to the recent plane crash in Washington DC. In this episode, Mom and I discuss the origins of how this concept became the default reactionary bugaboo, and how it is designed to distract from Trump's effort to dismantle the administrative state to support his inner circle of billionaire buddies like Elon Musk. DEIA (they like to forget about the A) is a pretense to allow them to plunder the federal government. And none of this will benefit the American people. The Right-Wing frames the issue of DEI around the idea of "The Meritocracy" while they place the least qualified people imaginable into positions of power. To Trump - Merit is defined by loyalty to Trump... Support us on PatreonHosted by Adrienne Larkin and Will Gordh
