"Sound Perimeter" is a radio show created and hosted by Lia Uribe, professor of music and an associate dean at the University of Arkansas Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The show is produced by Sophia Nourani and airs on KUAF 91.3 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. "Sound Perimeter" is dedicated to exploring diverse voices and perspectives within the world of music. Its goal is to broaden the audience's understanding and connection to inclusive and diverse musical experiences, with the hope of allowing music to have a transformative impact on their lives.
In today’s Sound Perimeter, we listen to Arizona composer Kira Zeeman Rugen and her piece Atmosphere, and Mexican composer Juan Pablo Contreras with Mariachitlán, pieces about place, about what it means to arrive somewhere new, to carry the places we have known with us, and to slowly begin to feel connected to somewhere else.
In today’s Sound Perimeter, we reflected on saudade, that beautiful Brazilian word with no perfect translation through the music of Egberto Gismonti and Antônio Carlos Jobim, and the beautiful interpretations of the Bianca Gismonti Trio and Eliane Elias.

Today's Sound Perimeter celebrates the Fourth of July through the music of two remarkable American women composers. Nkeiru Okoye's "Voices Shouting Out", written in the aftermath of September 11, reminded us that even in moments of profound loss, music can become a voice of resilience, hope and collective resolve. Jessie Montgomery's "Banner" invited us to hear our national anthem in a new way. Rather than treating "The Star-Spangled Banner" as a fixed symbol, she reimagines it as a living tradition, one that grows richer as it embraces the many cultures, histories, and voices that shape America. By weaving the anthem together with other musical traditions from across the Americas, Montgomery reminds us that our shared ideals are strengthened not by a single voice, but by many voices heard together. We hear it arrive in different ways: as shifting patterns and playful color in Australian composer Elena Kats - Chernin’s piano duet 'The Rain Puzzle', and as something inward and heavy - hearted in Randy Newman’s 'I Think It ’ s Gonna Rain Today'. One piece lets rain move and sparkle; the other turns it into an emotional landscape, full of longing and quiet isolation. Maybe it’s about still being able to recognize beauty, or about processing what we're carrying, or finding inspiration to center light rather than darkness. I’m not entirely sure. But I do know that this music offers a way to be with life and death, complexity and tenderness, that's it. Today's Sound Perimeter features Metacosmos by Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, a contemporary piece inspired by the idea of crossing into unfamiliar territory, taking listeners inside a universe where forces are felt more than explained. We then turn to Venus, the Bringer of Peace from The Planets by Gustav Holst, where the cosmos becomes a place of reflection rather than fear, imagining Venus as a planet in a state of calm within a vast and mysterious universe.
Today's Sound Perimeter listens to two different versions of “Motherless Child”, one by Jubilant Sykes, and the other by Cécile McLorin Salvant. Each rendition holds the same spiritual at its center, yet each opens a distinct emotional world. Sykes offers the song with warmth, grace, and a sense of outward offering, shaped by movement, conversation, and color. And we ended with the Jerry Granelli Trio performing Vince Guaraldi’s "Skating", a piece that glides and sparkles with the lightness of ice underfoot. Ottorino Respighi captured the bright call of the cuckoo in an Italian morning, turning nature’s voice into playful melody. Annea Lockwood led us deep into the Amazon night, where the forest itself seemed to breathe through sound and imagination.
