EN - A song-podcast follows a simple principle: dedicating one podcast to a unique song from the 1932 Cairo recordings. Contemporary artists, researchers and experts choose a recording and explain the reasons for their choice, followed by the original piece in its entirety.

FR - Un song-podcast repose sur un principe simple : consacrer un épisode à un morceau unique des enregistrements du Caire de 1932. Des artistes, chercheurs et experts contemporains choisissent un chant et expliquent les raisons de leur choix, avant de diffuser le morceau original dans son intégralité.

AR - يعتمد البودكاست الغنائي على مبدأ بسيط: تخصيص حلقة بودكاست واحدة لأغنية فريدة من تسجيلات القاهرة لعام 1932. حيث يختار فنانون وباحثون وخبراء معاصرون تسجيلاً معيناً ويشرحون أسباب اختيارهم، ثم تُعرض الأغنية الأصلية كاملةً.

    Song-podcast with Luc Verrier, sound engineer

    FR - Nous nous entretenons à présent avec Luc Verrier, ingénieur du son à la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Il a choisi un extrait d'une nouba marocaine — « Parcours le monde et tu en saisiras les secrets » — interprétée au Caire par l'ensemble Omar Jaidi, originaire de Fès. Ce choix lui permet également d'illustrer sa démarche en matière de traitement sonore, en nous faisant passer du disque 78 tours original à la version finale, après traitement sonore. EN - We are now speaking with Luc Verrier, a sound engineer at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. He has selected an excerpt from a Moroccan nouba—"Travel the world and you will grasp its secrets"—performed in Cairo by the Omar Jaidi ensemble from Fez. This choice also allows him to illustrate his approach to sound processing, taking us from the original 78 rpm record to the final version after all the sound treatments.     Song-podcast with Abderraouf Ouertani, 'ud player and composer.

    EN - Abderraouf Ouertani, artist and researcher, opted for a muwashah (a form of sung poetry) entitled Ya la qawmi dhayaouni (“Who are these people who have confused me?”). It was performed in Cairo in 1932 by Mohamed Ghanim’s Maluf ensemble from Tunisia. Armed only with his lute and his voice, Abderraouf patiently and skillfully does everything he can to bring out the nuances of the versions of a song that he learned at school and which inspired one of his compositions. We met on 4 April 2024, in Paris. FR - Abderraouf Ouertani, artiste et chercheur, a choisi une muwashah (une forme de poésie chantée) intitulée Ya la qawmi dhayaouni (« Qui sont ces gens qui m’ont troublé ? »). Elle a été interprétée au Caire en 1932 par l’ensemble Maluf de Mohamed Ghanim, originaire de Tunisie. Armé uniquement de son luth et de sa voix, Abderraouf s’efforce avec patience et talent de faire ressortir les nuances des versions d’une chanson qu’il a apprise à l’école et qui a inspiré l’une de ses compositions. Nous nous sommes rencontrés le 4 avril 2024, à Paris. AR - اختار عبد الرؤوف ورتاني، الفنان والباحث، موشح بعنوان يا لا قومي ضايعوني وقد أداها في القاهرة عام 1932 فرقة «ملوف» التونسية بقيادة محمد غانم. مسلحاً فقط بعوده وصوته، يبذل عبد الرؤوف كل ما في وسعه، بصبر ومهارة، لإبراز الفروق الدقيقة بين نسخ الأغنية التي تعلمها في المدرسة والتي ألهمت إحدى مؤلفاته. التقينا في 4 أبريل 2024، في باريس. TR - Sanatçı ve araştırmacı Abderraouf Ouertani, "Ya la qawmi dhayaouni" ("Beni şaşırtan bu insanlar kim?") başlıklı bir muvaşâ (şarkılı şiir biçimi) seçti. Bu eser, 1932'de Kahire'de Tunuslu Mohamed Ghanim'in Maluf topluluğu tarafından seslendirilmişti.
