Food and Film: Hilary Mace and Ron Moore on new cafes, Red Rose Film Fest & America Revitalized

I had a blast chatting with Hilary Mace from Scarlet Runner and Ron Moore from the Why This Film? podcast about Food, Film, and some Fall Foliage as well! Hilary and I both checked out the new OddBird Neighborhood Cafe that opened recently in Akron, PA. It’s a delightful family owned cafe with a full breakfast and lunch menu, including the best burger that Hilary’s had in a long time! Hilary also shared about a new local initiative called America Revitalized that is hosting an event at West Art on October 26 with a full panel talking about all aspects of food and health from farm to fork. Ron shared details about the upcoming Red Rose Film Festival hitting Lancaster theaters on November 12 to November 15. He also checked out the brand new Underground Film District, a monthly series showing at Penn Cinema featuring local films and opportunities to network with other filmmakers in Central PA. Finally, Ron mentioned that Penn Cinema will be showing Rocky for several nights in the theater to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this classic Philly film. We closed the show with a peek at the brand new Pearl Cafe and Bakery, and discussed a couple other favorite local bakeries: Elsewhere and Front Porch. We’ll be keeping an eye on the Pearl Cafe and getting over there for some events soon! Thanks for listening! Around Lancaster: Adam Grim Looks at Columbia and Tony Gorick Talks Tales From the Shadows

Spooky season is upon us as the leaves begin to fall and we start seeing pumpkins popping up on porches throughout the county. Adam Grim and I are joined by Tony Gorick, the sales and marketing manager at Decades, Lancaster city’s barcade and restaurant. Tony organized a special weekend long event called “Tales From The Shadows: A Cryptid & Paranormal Weekend” in collaboration with several other downtown businesses. Adam also recounted a few incredible cultural events that went down last month in Lancaster: Restaurant Week, a series of shows called Blank from Prima Theatre, and ROOTED, a contemporary dance performance by Luna Dance Company. We also discussed a new hotel in Columbia, a Hampton Inn by Hilton opening in an old potato chip factory that will include a rooftop lounge overlooking the Susquehanna River. As always, there’s way more going on than we can fit on one episode. Be sure to drop a line and let us know what you’re looking forward to this spooky season! Thanks for listening! Art and the City: Ruby Mundok and Katherine Horst Breakdown Fall Art Walk and First Friday Weekend

I’m seriously winded at how much is happening around Lancaster as we roll into October, 2026. Katherine Horst, owner of Horst Art Center in Manheim joined us for our monthly arts update. She and her husband Jason, will be taking over a space at Ewell Plaza, opening a new arts focused business called Makers, that will have gallery space, plus 13 new art studio spaces available starting in October. Coming up on October 17th and 18th is Lancaster’s Fall Artwalk, which is a full weekend celebrating the arts. It’s a self-guided tour of galleries all around Lancaster City, organized by the Lancaster City Art Collective. Ruby Mundok is back as well, bringing our monthly update from Lancaster City’s tourism department. The city will continue their Friday Friday programming at Ewell Plaza and Binns Park. On Saturday, October 3, the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration will be held at Binns Park followed by the One World Festival on Sunday, October 4. Phew! Food and Film: Hilary Mace & Joel Chandler on Good Eats While Eating Good and Ron Moore on Films

We’re talking about food and film. On the food side, I’m joined by Hilary Mace, the founder of The Scarlet Runner, a wildly popular catering business based in Lancaster between 2011 and 2021. Hilary closed down during the pandemic and left the area to live in remote locations in Arizona and Idaho. While she returned to the Lancaster area about two years ago, she just recently relaunched The Scarlet Runner. Hilary and I are joined by Lancaster fitness coach Joel Chandler, who recently published The Lancaster Nutrition Handbook. It’s a guide to over a dozen Lancaster City restaurants from the perspective of eating for your fitness goals. The guide includes calorie and macro estimates for some of your favorite restaurants in Lancaster. Ron Moore, a Lancaster County film enthusiast and the host of the Why This Film? podcast, joined me to break down the Lancaster film scene. Ron will be back each month to report on special screenings, original film projects, and events wrapped around film in Lancaster County. As usual there’s a lot going on around Lancaster and a ton of great restaurants to enjoy. Be sure to get out and support our incredible locally-owned restaurant scene. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: The Candy Factory (TCF Coworking + Social Club) https://clubtcf.com So Good Lancaster https://sogoodlancaster.com Food The Scarlet Runner (Hilary Mace) https://thescarletrunner.com The Lancaster Nutrition Handbook (Joel Chandler) https://utu.synchronycoaching.net/ Lancaster Central Market https://centralmarketlancaster.com Souvlaki Boys Grill https://www.souvlakiboys.com Himalayan Curry & Grill https://himalayanlancaster.com 551 West https://551west.com Chellas Arepa Kitchen https://eatchellas.com Film Why This Film? Around Lancaster: Adam Grim & Jenn Knepper chatting about Lancaster Review and Gifts That Give Hope

It’s Labor Day week and that means school is back in season, the days are getting a little shorter, and (hopefully) the weather will cool off just a bit in the coming weeks. On the program today we welcome Adam Grim from The Lancaster Review and Jenn Knepper from Gifts That Give Hope for a chat about a bunch of stuff happening around Lancaster County in September. Adam filled us in on what’s been happening at The Lancaster Review, a weekly newsletter and online local news page covering events and culture all around the county. He gave us a sneak peek at some stories he and his team are working on for upcoming issues. Adam will be a regular contributor on the show to keep us up to date on Lancaster county happenings and profiles of the characters that make up the cultural fabric of Lancaster. Gifts That Give Hope is an alternative gift fair where you can skip the Black Friday sales and put your money back into our local community through donations to area non-profits and purchasing goods from social conscience local vendors for the holidays. For its 19th year, the fair has been moved up this year to October 10 at 10am, instead of its usual schedule in late November or early December. Don’t miss it! September is going to be busy and beautiful. Be sure to get out and about in Lancaster County as we wind down summer and look forward to fairs, football, and sweater weather! - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: The Candy Factory (TCF) https://clubtcf.com Chellas https://eatchellas.com Lancaster Review https://lancasterreview.com Chellas Arepa Kitchen https://eatchellas.com Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster https://giftsthatgivehopelancaster.org One World Festival https://oneworldfestivallancaster.org Farm & Home Center (gift fair venue) https://farmandhomecenter.org We want to hear from YOU! It's the launch of season 2 of the So Good Lancaster podcast and we're mixing things up. This is the first episode of our new format. First off, we're upping the cadence of the show to weekly and expanding to a video format. Phew! Second off, each month we're going to be focusing on recurring topics: First week — art and updates from Lancaster City Second week — happenings around the county Third week — the Lancaster music scene Fourth week — film and food On the program today we welcome Ruby Mundok, Social Media and Tourism Marketing Manager for the City of Lancaster and Katherine Horst, owner of Horst Arts Center, located in Manheim. We chatted about the abundance of events coordinated by the city for September, including Welcoming Week, a nationally recognized initiative that is coming to Lancaster through a celebration highlighting our diverse culture, neighborhoods, businesses, & residents. Among a ton of other events we chatted about the first Capital Day Festival, coming to Penn Square on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Speaking of September 26, it's shaking out to be one of the busier days of the month. Katherine shared that two arts festivals are also scheduled for that day in Lancaster County, including the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show and Columbia's "Art in the Park" in the Locust Street Park. As always, the annual Labor Day arts festival at Long's Park is on tap this week along with another First Friday in downtown Lancaster, that has been a staple event in the city for over two decades. Bottom line, get out and enjoy September while we still have the nice warm weather! Lancaster's Food Truck Scene

While digging into the Lancaster food truck scene, an interesting theme emerged. The owners of food trucks, and there are many in Lancaster and the surrounding areas, don’t see each other primarily as competition, but more as part of a collective of sorts. Food trucks can’t be at more than one event at a time, so trucks of similar items find themselves referring each other to events, and trucks with complementary items find themselves at the same events and provide snacks for each other. I loved hearing about this sense of collaboration in the local food truck scene. Danielle Landis, from Lickity Split and W Donuts, is a 20 year veteran of the scene who helps organize food truck festivals around the region. Danielle joined me in the So Good Media studio to chat about the ups and downs of working a truck, the camaraderie of the owners, and a few of the annual food truck festivals to enjoy. Cameos in this episode include David Hiester from W Donuts and Nathan Claycomb from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. recording during previous interviews for the podcast. Community Through Women's Sports

I had the opportunity to learn about the Dutchland Derby Rollers and the Thorns Rugby Club at the Stuff To Do Fair back in January. While I had heard of the Rollers over the years, I had no idea there was a women’s adult rugby club here in Lancaster. Curious, I started digging into these two teams and quickly began to realize that these types of adult sports serve a much bigger purpose than scoring points and claiming bragging rights. They form friendships, provide opportunities for learning new skills, and build community. Through these two teams I was introduced to our very own women’s ice hockey team, the Lancaster Reapers. It turns out that this trio of adult women’s sports teams recently formed an informal collaborative alliance to help each other spread the word, grow attendance and interest, and even fundraise together. I wanted to learn more, so I welcomed Diosanny Rivera from the Dutchland Derby Rollers, Kelly Leibolt and Zimmy from Lancaster Reapers, and Alex Tarleton and Eva Dombrowski from the Knightmare and Thorns Ruby Clubs to the program to talk about their respective sports and teams, and find out why these kinds of teams are important. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: Dutchland Derby Rollers Lancaster Reapers Thorns Rugby We want to hear from YOU! Conestoga River of the Year

Lancaster County’s Conestoga River is Pennsylvania’s 2026 River of the Year! The River of the Year award honors a Pennsylvania waterway, raising awareness and recognizing conservation achievements by those who care for these awesome resources. It’s administered by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR) and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). “This once-polluted river is an example of what can happen when we prioritize clean, healthy waterways. Its transformation has made the Conestoga a hub for outdoor recreation, providing a boost to the region and demonstrating that rivers build thriving communities.” - DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. So, who are the primary stewards of this Lancaster County waterway? The Conestoga River Club. On this episode of the podcast I had the pleasure of talking about the Conestoga River with Conestoga River Club Executive Director Malinda Harnish Clatterbuck and club board member Steve Carlson. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: Conestoga River Club 2026 River of the Year Department of Conservation and Natural Resources We want to hear from YOU! Lancaster Fringe Fest

Fringe festivals began back in 1947 when the International Festival of Music and Drama was planned in a post-war Edinburgh, Scotland. Eight Edinburgh theatre companies were left out, but decided to book their own festival in smaller, alternative venues around the city. Without an official connection to the larger festival, the acts performing on the fringe could be more open, accessible, and experimental in nature. In the decades that followed, the idea of performing in alternative and found spaces spread and fringe festivals began popping up around the globe. While Philadelphia has been hosting a large fringe festival (over 300 acts in 2025) each September, and our closer neighbors, York and Harrisburg, have been hosting their version of the festival for many years, Lancaster has never had its own…until now. Lancaster Fringe Fest founders Caleb Corkery and Frith Rooney joined me on the program to talk about the inaugural Lancaster Fringe Festival, coming to Lancaster City on from May 21 through May 24, 2026. The festival will include forty performances across twenty venues plus street performances all around the city. Learn more about the festival at LancasterFringeFest.org or on Instagram and Facebook. Our So Good Music feature is “Good Ghost Goodbye” by Lancaster ambient, electronic, and atmospheric pop artist Dean Thomas. Stay ’til the end of the episode for a quick chat and to hear the full track. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: LancasterFringeFest.org Dean Thomas We want to hear from YOU! Stuff To Do Fair 2026 Part II

It’s the second in our two-episode coverage of the Stuff To Do Fair 2026. The fair went down in the gymnasium at Washington Elementary school in Lancaster, PA on a freezing Saturday, January 31, 2026. The gym was filled with over 50 organizations, clubs, and businesses that provide entertainment, hobbies, activities, lessons, and a ton of other “stuff to do” right here in Lancaster County. Organized by Sav Thorpe Capizzi and state representative Izzy Smith Wade-El, this 2nd (annual) Stuff To Do Fair welcomed over 500 residents who braved the cold to come together to chat, share, and ultimately be in community with each other, learning about a bunch of what there is to do in Lancaster County. We were there representing The Candy Factory coworking + social club and So Good Lancaster with mic in hand, interviewing just a fraction of the vendors who were representing. Check out the previous episode of the program to hear the first part of this two-part series. Stuff To Do Fair 2026 Part I

I walked into the gymnasium at Washington Elementary school in Lancaster, PA around 9:30 am on a bitter cold Saturday, January 31, 2026. The gym was buzzing with activity filled with people representing organizations, clubs, and businesses who provide entertainment, hobbies, activities, lessons, and a ton of other “stuff to do” here in Lancaster County. These folks were bustling around, setting up rows of tables scattered around the gym floor. By ten o’clock the doors were open, and the general public was welcomed by organizers Sav Thorpe Capizzi and state representative Izzy Smith Wade-El to the 2nd (annual) Stuff To Do Fair. Over 50 vendors and over 500 residents braved the cold to attend what might look like a job fair, but was actually just a place for the community to come together, to chat, to make new friends, and to learn about stuff they can do to get out of the house and be with others. The Stuff To Do Fair is 100% free, for both the vendors and the participants. We were there representing The Candy Factory coworking + social club and So Good Lancaster with mic in hand, interviewing just a fraction of the vendors who were representing. This is the first in a two-episode series covering the Stuff To Do Fair 2026. Stay tuned for part two in the next episode of the podcast. On this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with: Sav Thorpe Capizzi, organizer of Stuff To Do Fair Olivia Polaski from Lancaster Bird Club Corey Paternoster from The Upside Mayor Jaime Arroyo from the City of Lancaster Laura Pauls-Thomas from Ride Roll and Stroll Heather Davis from Write Now Angie Springer from Lancaster Improv Players - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) We want to hear from YOU! Hot Drinks in Cold Weather

Who doesn’t love a warm cuppa something on a freezing cold day? Well, it’s been freezing cold outside for weeks here in Lancaster, so I checked in with some folks here in Lancaster County who specialize in serving up hot drinks. Heather Marston, owner of Pureblend Tea in Ephrata, joined me to talk about her special custom blends of high quality loose leaf teas and specialty hot chocolate, and where you can find her products around the county. I also had the pleasure of chatting with Nathan and Denise Claycomb from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. about how they landed in the coffee business based on a “simple” idea among coworkers. We also chatted about the ultra cozy Joe on the Go at Lampeter Cafe, a full-service cafe they opened a little over a year ago. As a little bonus, we were visited by Adam Grim and Ben Fuller, who launched The Lancaster Review this past fall. It’s a weekly newsletter highlighting fun stuff to do around Lancaster County, along with feature articles and profiles about local small businesses, like Pureblend Tea and Joe on the Go Coffee Co.! Tune in and listen while enjoying your favorite hot drink for cold weather. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: Pureblend Tea Joe on the Go Coffee Co. We want to hear from YOU! Hourglass Keeping Lancaster Informed [NPS]

For this So Good Lancaster Nonprofit Spotlight, we’re featuring Hourglass, a nonprofit communications organization created here in Lancaster nearly 30 years ago. The primary goal of Hourglass is to protect Lancaster County's unique character and quality of life while ensuring that future growth is socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. The organization's mission is executed by providing the community with reliable, fact-based, nonpartisan information through First Friday Forums, a monthly speaker series held at the Ware Center, and through a bi-weekly newsletter called Keeping Lancaster Current. I began reading the newsletter and attending the First Friday Forums during the summer of 2025 when The Candy Factory coworking + social club, our sister company, became a business level member of Hourglass. So far the experience has been fantastic. I’ve attended talks about major construction projects planned for the region, the impacts of national policy on local businesses, and a full session from our county commissioners and their plans for the new year. It’s an incredible resource to stay tapped into what’s happening in Lancaster and the possible effects on our way of life. It was a pleasure to chat with Hourglass’s Executive Director Lea Zikmund to learn more about the experience she is bringing to the organization, the history of Hourglass, and what the future holds. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: Hourglass Annual Commissioners Forum 2026 (YouTube) We want to hear from YOU! David Greene Talks LNP

David Greene is a McCaskey High School graduate who went on to cover the White House for the Baltimore Sun and National Public Radio, was co-host of Morning Edition, NPR’s national morning news program, and his now the host of a couple of shows produced by two of the largest public radio stations in the country: KCRW’s Left, Right, & Center and WHYY’s Sports in America. Shall we add newspaper publisher to David’s list of accomplishments? We will soon. On December 1, 2025 LNP | Lancaster Online, Lancaster’s local daily newspaper, ran an article about itself titled “Nonprofit led by veteran journalist David Greene to acquire LNP | LancasterOnline”. The article announced plans for a new nonprofit to take over all of the newspaper’s assets, as a gift from the current owner, Pennon, which also runs WITF, the National Public Radio affiliate station based in Harrisburg. David will act as the interim publisher of the newspaper until a permanent publisher takes over. Even after that, he will continue to serve on the paper’s board of directors. I caught up with David to talk about growing up in Lancaster, his journalism journey into public radio, and why it’s important for him and Lancaster County to work toward a solid future for high quality local journalism. David believes the foundation for that solid future lies in a nonprofit news model similar to one recently adopted by the Salt Lake Tribune in Salt Lake City, Utah. For profit newspapers are dying in the United States. David’s mission is to make sure that LNP, with a history in Lancaster that dates back to 1794, doesn’t just continue with business as usual, but reignites community engagement, innovates how local news is delivered, and ultimately thrives in a new chapter of local journalism here in Lancaster. At the time of our conversation, the transfer of assets had still not been approved by the state Attorney General’s office, but David was optimistic that it would happen soon. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: The LNP article published on December 1, 2025 KCRW’s Left, Right & Center WHYY’s Sports in America David Greene is Obsessed podcast We want to hear from YOU! Baseball History in Lancaster

100 years ago, in 1925, a professional baseball team called the Harrisburg Giants played Sunday games right here in Lancaster at Rossmere Baseball Park, which is now the site of Lancaster Catholic High School. The team featured hall of fame players and those games are now considered major league. Baseball historian Jeremy Raff joined us to tell the story of the Harrisburg Giants' time in Lancaster, along with a celebration of these games in partnership with other local organizations like the Lancaster Stormers. Stormers president Michael Reynolds also joined the conversation to give us the history of team and their stadium, Penn Medicine Park, that has been a staple in the community for over 20 years. Lancaster County Women for Good [NPS]

This is the first in a series of episodes we’re introducing that we’ll periodically sprinkle into the feed called the So Good Lancaster Non-Profit Spotlights. On this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Susan Klapkin, the vice chair and treasurer of Lancaster County Women for Good, a local nonprofit giving circle with a mission of lifting up other nonprofit organizations that are making a positive impact in our community. This group of over 200 Lancaster Women use a giving circle model where small donations are collected and distributed as a lump sum grant to one of three nonprofits that pitch at a quarterly Gather and Grant event.
