shunned

Religious and cult ideologies often use the practice of shunning to silence their critics and to control their members through fear. This podcast sheds light on shunning through real life stories as told by the people that have lived through it. Learn what their lives were like and where they have ended up in life after being shunned. Featuring stories from Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientology, Amish, Mennonite, FLDS, the Moonies, and more, you will learn about the real lives of former members that have been shut out by their former communities. The host is an exJW himself, a professional cult recovery coach, and provides insight into the psychology of coercive control and the impacts on those subjected to it through these high control groups.

More Jehovah's Witnesses Will Die After The Blood Transfusion Changes From Their Leadership

The Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses recently announced a massive shift in their doctrine regarding blood transfusions—allowing the four main blood components (red cells, white cells, platelets, plasma) and autologous blood storage as a matter of personal conscience. In this video, we break down the latest Watchtower announcement, examine the medical realities of what this policy change actually means, explore why this historic update is happening now, and discuss how both active Jehovah's Witnesses and the ex-JW community are reacting. Whether you are navigating religious trauma, processing the grief of loved ones lost to past policies, or wondering how to have conversations with active JW family members, this episode offers a grounded breakdown and resources for support. I mentioned a video that I did on the topic of the announcement regarding autologous tranfusions and that can be found here: https://youtu.be/XgNdSQWo07c?si=mG8Jp0miw8AafGeR I also mentioned an article about what is happening in Japan and this is the article that I was referencing: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/04/13/japan/crime-legal/jehovahs-witnesses-sue-japan-government/ Support the show and get bonuses as well by donating to the cause on our Patreon page, Patreon.com/shunned Are you struggling in some area of life? 226 – How Starting A Fire Trapped A Family In A Cult And The Questions That Set Andrew Free

Episode Summary In this episode, 37-year-old Andrew shares his unique journey growing up within a strict Jehovah's Witness family in Western Colorado after his grandmother discovered Watchtower literature while using it as fire kindling. Raised in an environment characterized by an intense fear of demons and strict performance expectations, Andrew's innate curiosity and persistent "why" questions repeatedly brought him into conflict with his family and church leaders. Unable to accept self-referential doctrines without external evidence, his refusal to conform led to constant friction, corporal punishment, and eventually moving out on his own at just 15 years old. The conversation delves into Andrew's path through teenage rebellion, a frightening experience with sleep paralysis following a Burning Man event, and his mid-20s attempt to re-examine the religion through deep esoteric questions and historical research. Rather than engaging with his inquiry into topics like the Book of Enoch and ancient symbolism, local elders quickly shut down the dialogue, exposing the rigid boundaries of the organization. Today, Andrew reflects on deconstruction, personal autonomy, and how he channels lessons from his past into creative artwork and innovative communication systems in his kitchen career. Key Takeaways Curiosity vs. Conformity: Andrew's refusal to accept self-referential logic without external references prevented him from ever committing to baptism, highlighting how critical thinking naturally resists high-control conditioning. Exploitation of Vulnerability: The family's initial entry into the group occurred during a time of personal grief and hardship, illustrating how high-control movements leverage emotional vulnerability to recruit new members. Rejection of Deep Inquiry: When Andrew attempted to re-engage in his mid-20s with questions about deep esoteric subjects, ancient texts, and Old Testament symbolism, church leaders shut down the discussion and discouraged his presence. The Household "Mini Governing Body": Andrew details how strict Witness families can act as high-control groups within the larger organization, imposing intense discipline, demonizing pop culture, and restricting outside friendships. Reprogramming Habits for Personal Growth: Rather than remaining bound by his upbringing, Andrew extracts useful communication dynamics from high-control structures and adapts them into innovative, healthy workflows for his current kitchen career and artwork. Direct Quotes "In education, they tell you, hey, like you can't just like use yourself as a reference. You have to have a separate reference. There has to be something else that is proving your case, proving that this is the truth…" "I don't want to have anything to do with extracurricular stuff on a repeating basis with the same group all the time because it's a form of brainwashing. This is a form of control…" "You have to let go of one thing in order to pick something else up." Resources Mentioned The Study and Practice of Astral Projection (Book mentioned during Andrew's exploration). The Book of Enoch (Ancient text brought up during discussions with elders). shunnedpodcast.com (Podcast website for story submissions and information). Guest Bio Andrew is a 37-year-old artist and kitchen innovator from Colorado who was raised in a strict Jehovah's Witness household after his grandmother discovered Watchtower literature used for fire kindling. After leaving the group as a teenager and exploring a wide range of spiritual and philosophical ideas, he now lives a life centered on personal autonomy, creative expression, and developing intuitive workplace systems. The Toxic Parent Trap, A Fatal Flaw Of JW Self-Worth, Comply Or Die (In Memoriam)

Episode Summary This compilation episode, built from three targeted short-form videos, dives deep into the emotional and psychological wounds left by high-control religious environments. The host breaks down how healthy parenting dynamics are completely inverted in Jehovah's Witness households, where children are raised to sacrifice their Saturdays, downtime, and authentic identities to support their parents' religious obsessions. The discussion also exposes a tragic cycle within the survivor community: active Jehovah's Witness parents frequently rely on and exploit their financially stable, shunned adult children for care as they age, dumping this responsibility onto them because active Witness siblings are busy with "important" group tasks. The episode also introduces the devastating concept of the "poison pill" of self-worth, explaining how high-control groups condition members to outsource their self-esteem to external entities—such as performative group service, spouses, or employers. Through the touching and tragic story of Amanda, a former member with a severe seizure disorder, the host illustrates how Witness "care" always comes with a steep cost, including familial pressure to study Watchtower literature and submit to elder meetings. Amanda's heartbreaking story of quiet defiance—such as smuggling a pet hamster into a meeting or wearing a Michael Jackson mask to face elders—serves as a powerful reminder that leaving a cult is merely the beginning of a long healing journey, not a magical instant cure. Key Takeaways The Inversion of Parental Love: In healthy families, parents sacrifice for and support their children's interests, but Jehovah's Witness parents reverse this dynamic, forcing children to sacrifice their Saturdays, homework, and downtime to fit a "perfect JW" mold that reflects the parents' own religious egos. The Caregiving Exploitation Loop: Shunning parents frequently rely on their financially stable, disfellowshipped children for physical care as they age, exploiting the survivor's lifelong hunger for parental approval while active Witness siblings focus on group activities. The outsourced self-worth "Poison Pill": High-control groups inject a "poison pill" into members by teaching them to disown themselves, forcing them to outsource their self-worth to religious performance, relationships, or jobs rather than developing an internal sense of value. Conditional Samaritan "Care": Using the tragic case study of Amanda, a woman with a dangerous seizure disorder, the host exposes how Witness "care" is highly conditional; her family threatened to evict her over a simple Facebook friendship with a former member. 225 – I Spent $10,000 in Secret Just to Prove My Own Religion Was a Lie

In this incredibly powerful and deeply personal episode, we sit down with Ray, a 60-year-old former third-generation Jehovah's Witness who shares his dramatic journey out of a high-control system. Though he successfully faded from the religion in his early twenties to live a vibrant life in San Francisco as a hair stylist, Ray made the decision to return at age 30, seeking a "safe" and community-centered environment to raise a family. Over the next two decades, Ray ran a highly popular Modesto hair salon, operating as a self-described "publisher seat warmer" who managed to avoid congregational duties—going door-to-door only once in 22 years of marriage—while simultaneously organizing active youth groups and building a warm, social haven in his own backyard. However, the safe facade crumbled when Ray allowed himself to deconstruct the doctrines. He spent over $10,000 on rare, historical Watchtower literature, keeping the boxes hidden in his hair salon office where he stayed up late verifying the organization's chronological errors and historical cover-ups. This forbidden research led to a grueling eight-hour judicial committee for apostasy where his closest friends and barber-chair clients testified against him, followed by a tragic, unnecessary family loss under the strict blood transfusion doctrine. Ultimately forced to fake a moral transgression using "theocratic warfare" just to free his wife for an unscriptural divorce, Ray hit rock bottom before finding true autonomy. Today, Ray shares how he reclaimed his identity at age 60, ran marathons, and built an authentic, chosen family based on genuine, unconditional love. Key Takeaways The $10,000 Secret Library: To prove to himself whether "the truth" was actually true, Ray ordered and hid tubs of old Watchtower publications, Rutherford books, and historical files in his salon office to verify the organization's shifting prophetic timelines (like 1914, 1925, and 1975). An Eight-Hour Inquisition: When the elders caught wind of his questioning, they subjected him to a marathon eight-hour trial where his lifelong friends and hair clients testified that brief, five-minute salon chats had "shook their faith". The Lethal Blood Transfusion Doctrine: Ray shares the devastating, heartbreaking loss of his 22-year-old nephew, a promising young musician who tragically died of a treatable chest tumor after his family adhered to the organization's ban on blood transfusions. A "Theocratic Warfare" Trap: Desperate to give his pioneering wife scriptural grounds for divorce without destroying her spiritual standing, Ray faked a one-night-stand confession, only for the elders to ignore his "repentance loop" and disfellowship him in just 20 minutes. Unconditional Love and a Jumbotron Proposal: Despite calling the suicide hotline twice during his lowest points, Ray successfully deconstructed. He is now thriving alongside his partner Destiny (also an ex-JW) and planning a surprise proposal on the San Francisco Giants' Jumbotron. Direct Quotes "When you find out that the truth is not the truth, the only thing to compare it to is finding out your mom's not your real mom." "Leaving a cult is a new beginning on a path to healing, not some magical end itself." "I just want to be the best dad, the best husband, the best son… and just make this time count." Resources Mentioned Santos Bonacci's "Astrotheology and the Bible" (Two-hour video that heavily triggered Ray's biblical deconstruction). The Gentile Times Reconsidered by Carl Olaf Johnson (The critical book analyzing the 607 vs. 587 BCE destruction of Jerusalem). JWFacts.com (Printouts Ray compiled for physical research). 224 – Lethal Hopes & Manila Envelopes – Surviving The Manipulation Of Jehovah's Witnesses & Thriving

Episode Summary Evan shares his story as a third-generation Jehovah's Witness whose family joined the organization during a period of marital vulnerability. After his father died of HIV-related complications when Evan was just three years old, the family faced intense judgment and stigma within the congregation, leading them to relocate to a rural "compound" in North Carolina for a fresh start. Growing up, Evan was fueled by the "resurrection hope"—the promise that if he remained obedient and "did more" for the organization, he would eventually be reunited with his father. The episode explores the heavy psychological toll of this upbringing, including the "bloodguilt" placed on children to convert their peers and the "reverse parenting" Evan performed while his mother struggled with severe mental health issues. Evan details his transition from a socially unprepared "clip-on tie" child to a rebellious teenager leading a double life, which eventually culminated in a judicial committee and his expulsion at age 20. Now 40, Evan reflects on his journey of rebuilding his own identity, the "superpower" of personal autonomy, and how he created a "chosen family" outside the walls of the Kingdom Hall. Key Takeaways Resurrection Hope as Leverage: The organization uses the grief of losing a parent to "double down" on a child's commitment, making their future reunion dependent on constant religious performance. The "Cage" of Protection: Evan deconstructs the common JW illustration that the organization is a protective "cage" in a shark-infested ocean, arguing that a cage is still a restricting cage regardless of the perceived safety it provides. Autonomy as a Superpower: Leaving the organization provides a "clean slate" where an individual can finally choose their own morals, circle of friends, and identity without institutional permission. Institutional Gaslighting: The organization's culture is designed to make members doubt themselves and their own perceptions, effectively teaching obedience over identity. Financial and Emotional Retaliation: Even after leaving, members may face continued attempts at control, such as Evan's mother attempting to commit tax fraud involving him or demanding rent from her "checking out" teenage son. Direct Quotes "Autonomy is the coolest thing in the world. And once you have it, it never stops." "You learn obedience, not identity." "Conditional love is not love. Everything in the organization is conditional." 223 - The Depressing Life Of Jehovah's Witnesses - Like Planting A Full Sun Plant In The Shade

In this episode, we meet Simon, a 51-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who was born into the organization during the height of the 1975 end-times hysteria. Growing up in a "biosphere of fear" in Quebec, Simon recounts a childhood defined by apocalyptic imagery, Holocaust-themed propaganda, and the intense pressure to conform to a "misfit" family dynamic that prioritized religious survival over individual identity. He takes us through his formative years—from his baptism at 17 to a 25-year marriage that ultimately dissolved when his pursuit of truth collided with the organization's rigid demand for loyalty. The narrative reaches a turning point when Simon confronts the systemic rot within the organization, including the discovery of an elder who had assaulted 22 women in a single congregation, only to be reinstated and sent to Simon's home. Simon discusses the specific mental health toll on men within the Watchtower, describing a "treadmill" of performance that leads to chronic depression and emasculation. Now living authentically after a pivotal sabbatical in Mexico, Simon shares how reclaiming his voice and listening to his "inner voice" led to a life of peace, clarity, and deep connection with his daughter, who also escaped the group. Key Takeaways The "North Star" of Truth: Simon explains that the very tools the organization gave him—a high respect for "The Truth"—eventually became his way out once he began to apply critical thinking and honest research to the group's own history and policies. Institutional Betrayal and Safety: A major catalyst for Simon's exit was the organization's failure to protect its members, highlighted by the "prolific" scandal of a predatory elder whose crimes were overlooked while the victims remained unprotected. The Psychological Treadmill for Men: Simon highlights the unique burden on men to be "beta males" who are compliant and self-sacrificing, which often results in a chronic loss of agency and deep-seated depression. The Body Knows: Simon encourages those in high-control groups to pay attention to physical symptoms—such as anxiety, depression, or a "lack of peace"—as these are often the body's way of demanding to be heard when the mind is being gaslit. "Who's on My Bench?": Through his disassociation letter, Simon found clarity by forcing his social circle to take a stand, allowing him to distinguish between superficial, conditional connections and real, solid relationships. Direct Quotes "Reality wins. You know, like you can keep your head in the sand and have your delusions and hang on tight to them, but you know, the longer it goes on, the higher the consequences… and in the end, reality wins." "If I could encourage anybody out there that's questioning… listen to your body and what it's telling to you… your body will demand to be heard sooner or later." "I needed to know going into the third period of my life who's on my bench and who's not… I don't have any more resources, time, attention, space for shallow relationships." 222 – How Rhett & Link Helped Me Wake Up From The Cult Of Jehovah's Witnesses & My Midnight Escape

In this episode, we hear from Morgan, a 28-year-old third-generation former Jehovah's Witness who describes his upbringing as part of the "weak sheep"—a family that believed the doctrine but often struggled with the rigid spiritual routine. Morgan opens up about a childhood defined by a pervasive fear of God, whom he viewed not as a loving father, but as a "homicidal maniac" prone to global destruction. He details the psychological toll of leading a double life as a teenager—selling pot while simultaneously knocking on doors for the ministry—and the "Zoro" highlighting technique he used to fake a spiritual routine he never truly felt. The narrative shifts to Morgan's early adulthood, marked by a high-pressure marriage at 19 and a subsequent mental breakdown that was met with institutional bullying rather than empathy from congregation elders. Morgan shares the chilling details of the "assassination letter" sent by his former congregation, which weaponized his medical information regarding autism to sabotage his reputation in a new city. Ultimately, it was a secular podcast about spiritual deconstruction that provided the mirror he needed to see through the "scam". Morgan's story is one of incredible resilience, culminating in a midnight escape with only a backpack and the eventual liberation of all three siblings from the organization. Key Takeaways The "Assassination Letter": Morgan reveals how elders weaponized his personal medical diagnosis of autism, including it in a formal "letter of non-recommendation" to ensure he was viewed as a "problem" by his new congregation. The Ear Biscuits Catalyst: In a unique "waking up" moment, Morgan realized he was in a cult while listening to the Ear Biscuits podcast (by YouTubers Rhett and Link), finding that their descriptions of "false religion" perfectly mirrored his own experiences within the "True Religion". Performance vs. Mental Health: When Morgan suffered a mental breakdown at 19, the elders' response was to "kick the crap" out of him emotionally, treating his suicidal ideation as a lack of respect for God rather than a medical crisis. The "Zoro" Technique: To survive the constant scrutiny of a performance-based community, Morgan mastered "performative nonsense," such as highlighting his study materials at random to appear prepared for meetings he was mentally checked out of. Generational Liberation: Despite being told the "world" would chew him up and spit him out, Morgan's exit was supported by "worldly" friends and paved the way for his younger brother to also leave, effectively "changing the family tree". Direct Quotes "I view God as a scary being… I guess I just always had this feeling that I would never match up to the standards". "They lied to us and they did it with smiles on their faces and they had the hands out for their for our money. Like this was a scam". "I left with a backpack, no money, no possessions… The grass is greener on the other side. It's you told your whole life that it wasn't, but… the grass is greener". 221 – The Exodus Of Genesis – Because Happiness Comes From Within, Not From Abusive Relationships

In this episode, we meet Genesis, a 31-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who shares her journey from a high-control upbringing to finding authentic peace. Born into the organization after her grandmother was recruited during a time of extreme grief in 1960s Cuba, Genesis describes a childhood dominated by "fear and anxiety" regarding the impending apocalypse. She details the devastating impact of the organization's shunning policy, which saw her 16-year-old brother cast out and his parents told to "pretend he died," leaving Genesis as the "replacement child" under intensified surveillance and bizarre modesty rules involving everything from sandals to jean shorts in swimming pools. Genesis also opens up about her early marriage to a "JW dream man"—a relationship born more out of a desire for escape than true compatibility—and the subsequent institutional betrayal she faced when he cheated. From being pressured by elders to "forgive and forget" his infidelity to the "miraculous" relief she felt upon walking away during the COVID-19 pandemic, her story is a masterclass in reclaiming agency. Today, she deconstructs the toxic narrative that success outside the cult is merely a "blessing from Satan," proving instead that true happiness comes from the hard work of self-care and autonomy. Key Takeaways Exploitative Recruitment: The organization systematically teaches members to look for "pain points," such as death in the family or isolation in foreign countries, to bait vulnerable people with the promise of a "resurrection hope". The "Death" of the Living: Shunning is used as a punitive tool for control; Genesis's mother was explicitly told to "pretend like [her son] died" after he was disfellowshipped at age 16 for refusing to rat out his friends. Control via "Appearance": Modesty rules are often arbitrary and based on the whims of local elders, such as banning sandals to avoid "provocative toes" or requiring women to wear jean shorts over swimsuits. Financial Abandonment: By discouraging higher education and retirement savings, the organization often leaves elderly members penniless, sometimes even encouraging them to leave their homes to the Watchtower instead of their own children. Reprogramming Happiness: Recovery requires unlearning the "survivor's guilt" associated with success, as members are conditioned to believe that any good fortune outside the group is a trap set by Satan. Direct Quotes "I am truly living for me, myself, and I. And as some people may say that it's selfish, but it's not. It is so nice to be selfish and put yourself first". 220 – Jehovah Is Slow To Protect Children – How JW Policies Protect Predators And Punish Victims

In this episode, we sit down with Sara, a 40-year-old third-generation former Jehovah's Witness who shares a raw and revealing look at the cost of high-control religious living. Sara describes an upbringing defined by the heavy influence of her grandfather, a prominent elder who provided a sense of "structure" and "safety" until his death when Sara was a young teenager. Following his passing, Sara witnessed her family's transition from "hero" status to "villains" in the eyes of the congregation after an uncle was jailed for child abuse, exposing the fickle nature of the "brotherhood" and the organization's priority of appearance over the well-being of its members. The conversation delves into the devastating trauma of institutional shunning and the systemic failures regarding child protection within the Watchtower. Sara recounts the harrowing experience of seeing a convicted predator reinstated while in jail to the applause of the congregation, while she was castigated for seeking her own identity. Now 17 years removed from the organization, Sara discusses her "miraculous" journey of reclaiming her life, earning a bachelor's degree at age 40, and utilizing professional therapy to heal from PTSD. This episode is a powerful testament to "changing the family tree" and finding unconditional love outside of a closed system. Key Takeaways The Utility of Members: Sara reflects on how her family was only valued as a "good example" as long as her grandfather was alive and serving the congregation's needs; once he died, the family felt "invisible" and abandoned. Paranoia and Control: The episode explores the extreme demonization of secular culture, including childhood phobias regarding "spirit-possessed" toys like troll dolls and posters of unicorns. Performance vs. Reality: Sara highlights the "double life" many Witnesses lead, noting that the persona required by the organization is often the "farce," while the "rebellious" actions are often a person's first attempts at authentic self-discovery. The Injustice of the Judicial System: A central theme is the disparity in discipline; Sara was disfellowshipped for normal human development (sex before marriage), while her abuser remained in good standing and in another case an abuser was quickly reinstated despite criminal convictions. Reclaiming Higher Education: Despite being told growing up that college was not important or "wicked," Sara emphasizes that secular education and professional mental health tools were the keys to her successful recovery. Direct Quotes "They care about their appearance… more than any of the group". "We're so damn hungry that we'll accept a crumb and make a meal out of it". "I changed the family tree in a way". 219 – Shunned While Active – Treated Like A Leper For Reporting Elder Misconduct & Sexual Harassment

In this heart-wrenching episode, we hear from Carolyn, a 49-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who survived a lifetime of systemic trauma, from foster care and childhood molestation to a high-control religious environment that "eats its members alive". Carolyn shares the chilling reality of being "shunned while active," a state where she remained an exemplary member but was treated like a "leper" by her own community after reporting elder misconduct and sexual harassment. Her story exposes the dark underbelly of a congregation where elders protect abusers and engage in "fake gross" behavior, including stalking and rehoming a member's pet under false pretenses. The narrative reaches a critical turning point when the organization's cruelty extends to Carolyn's autistic son, who was bullied by elders and physically assaulted by a member over a bag of candy. Carolyn details her "miraculous" health recovery upon leaving the constant stress of the organization and her eventual choice to choose self-identity and "organic" living over a toxic, performance-based membership. This is a powerful testament to the strength required to stand up to a "hate machine" and the beauty of finding a life defined by genuine love rather than control. Key Takeaways The "Darvo" Defense: Carolyn explains how reporting elder misconduct, such as an elder rolling in the sand drunk with another man's wife, resulted in the elders forming a judicial committee against her for "slander" rather than addressing the behavior. Targeting the Vulnerable: The sources highlight the heartbreaking systemic bullying of Carolyn's autistic son, whom elders mocked as "Eeyore the donkey" and attempted to bribe with money to "smile" for them. The Myth of "Wait on Jehovah": When Carolyn sought justice through a 25-page letter to the Branch, she was ignored for months and eventually told to simply "pray more, attend more meetings, and give more" instead of receiving an investigation. Physical Toll of Indoctrination: A major revelation in the episode is that Carolyn's chronic liver and health issues, which she suffered from for years, "miraculously improved" almost immediately after she stopped attending meetings and removed herself from the stress. Conditional Forgiveness: Carolyn exposes the hypocrisy of the "Matthew 18" rule, noting that while she was told to forgive her abusers, the organization used the same scripture to form a "lynch mob" against her when she tried to apply it to their behavior. Direct Quotes "My health miraculously improved after leaving". "If I can't be myself, if I can't be organic, I don't want it. I'm putting it down". "What you're doing is hurting me. Can you please stop doing that to me?". Resources Mentioned ExJwHelp.com: Cult recovery coaching and resources. California Penal Code: Specifically regarding harassment and stalking. Guest Bio Carolyn is a 49-year-old survivor of high-control religious abuse and a dedicated mother who successfully navigated her way out of the Jehovah's Witnesses to protect her children. 218 – Robbed Of Her Inheritance – The Daughter Who Stayed While Mom Refused To Help Her Own Parents

In this gripping episode, we speak with Samantha Giles, who recounts her journey from a childhood marked by family trauma to her eventual "escape" from the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses. After her mother joined the organization seeking stability at a low point, Samantha's world became "very small," defined by a "significant decline" in quality of life where gymnastics and holidays were replaced by a constant, pervasive fear of demons and Armageddon. Samantha explores the nuances of growing up as a "poor" Witness in a wealthy congregation, leading her to seek validity through baptism at just 15 years old—a decision that would later cost her everything. The heart of the episode details the "horror" of a judicial committee where Samantha was interrogated by three older men about her sexuality in front of her own mother. This violation was only the beginning; after being thrown out of her home at 17 and left to navigate the "real world" without any life skills, she faced a final, shocking betrayal involving a family inheritance. Samantha shares how her mother manipulated a family will to strip her of her grandfather's legacy, referring to her only as "the disfellowshipped one". It is a powerful story of reclaiming agency and building a new identity centered on unconditional love. Key Takeaways The Trap of Seeking Validity: Samantha reflects on how she felt "invalidated" as a fatherless child from a poor background, which pressured her into making a lifelong religious commitment at age 15 just to feel "accepted" within the congregation hierarchy. Obedience vs. Critical Thinking: The organization focuses on teaching children to "obey" rather than "how to think," leaving them vulnerable to whoever is the strongest presence in their life once they leave the sheltered environment. The "Violating" Judicial Process: Samantha describes the invasive and abusive nature of being questioned by elders regarding private sexual details, a process she notes felt like a violation and led her to push back rather than "repent". Shunning as Financial Manipulation: In a disturbing turn, Samantha's mother and brothers used the shunning protocol to justify rewriting a family will, effectively stealing Samantha's inheritance to purchase a home for themselves while she was caring for her dying grandparents. Reclaiming Identity through Motherhood: Now a mother herself, Samantha contrasts the "conditional love" of her past with the deep, protective bond she has with her daughters, vowing to never let a belief system dominate her ability to fight for their best interests. Direct Quotes "Demons were everywhere… we were just teaching children that like demons are walking among you". "What you call love does not resemble like any love I felt for my daughters. That's control". "Agency for me is always the biggest and most important thing. I think it's probably the crux of the ultimate of why I left". 217 – How Jehovah's Witnesses Pushed Me and My Non-JW Husband Away From Their Religion

In this episode, we sit down with Elizabeth, a 31-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who shares her journey as a fifth-generation member of the organization. Raised in a strict household where her father's history as a "Bethelite" set a high bar for spiritual performance, Elizabeth describes a childhood defined by "The Paradise Binder"—a homemade book of cutout publication pictures designed to program young minds before they could even read. From the pressure to "tally" scriptures at the Kingdom Hall to the harrowing experience of being physically removed from a car at age 12 for wearing mascara, Elizabeth exposes the intense surveillance and performance culture that dictated her early life. The narrative takes a deeply personal turn as Elizabeth recounts her "double life" in high school, her marriage to a non-Witness named Chris, and the traumatic miscarriage she suffered while navigating the stress of being disfellowshipped. She discusses the "death by a thousand cuts" that led to her awakening, sparked by everything from bizarre "bunker" videos at conventions to reading about the similarities between Witnesses and Mormons. Now "soft shunned," Elizabeth reflects on the peace she has found in her own skin, the importance of choice, and the relief of no longer having to view the world through a black-and-white lens. Key Takeaways The "Bethel" Standard: Growing up as the child of a former Bethelite meant Elizabeth's family life was an endless behind-the-scenes tour of spiritual hierarchy, where "spiritual things" always overrode personal milestones, including weddings. Performance-Based Love: Elizabeth's father measured her worth through her participation in meetings; she describes "graduating" from looking at pictures to "tally time," where she was expected to keep a physical count of scriptures and comments to earn parental approval. Institutional Inhospitality: The organization's treatment of Elizabeth's non-Witness husband, Chris, was exceptionally harsh, with elders comparing his presence at the Kingdom Hall to an ancient Bible account of people who were "worthy of death". Logical Deconstruction: Her exit was fueled by a written list of over 20 logical and scriptural questions—ranging from the lack of financial transparency to the hypocrisy of the "prodigal son" vs. modern shunning—that the organization simply could not answer. The Power of Choice: After years of being "voluntold" how to spend every hour, Elizabeth now finds the most beauty in the simple ability to choose her own friends, career, and beliefs based on her authentic self rather than a monthly report slip. Direct Quotes "You're a JW 24/7, a Jehovah is not what you are, it's who you are". "It's about results, right? Type A results to some degree". JWfacts.com (Referenced as "XJW facts"). Guest Bio Elizabeth is a 31-year-old medical professional and a fifth-generation former Jehovah's Witness who is currently "soft shunned" by her family. After over a decade of navigating a high-control upbringing and a complex reinstatement process, she now lives authentically with her husband and son, focusing on building a life defined by choice rather than indoctrination. Jehovah's Witnesses Will Still Die Refusing Blood Transfusions After The Update Allowing Blood

Since the mid 1900s Jehovah's Witnesses have had a ban on blood transfusions. They would take biblical commands to "abstain from blood" literally even though the commands were about how to handle blood from something that was dead, not about using blood to save something that was alive. And when they needed a potentially live saving blood transfusion they would deny it. We all carried around "No Blood" cards in our wallets and purses, little legal documents to speak for us if we were unable to do so. No Blood meant NO BLOOD. People died for their stance. Elders (leading men) in congregations were appointed to Hospital Liaison Committees to come in as enforcers when you were in the hospital to make sure that you did what you were told under the penalty of social death (shunning) if you didn't do as you were commanded. In the year 2000 Jehovah's Witnesses were given permission by their leaders, a small group of men in New York known as the Governing Body, to take minor blood fractions derived from four major blood components. So they were told that if other people gave blood, something that Jehovah's Witnesses would never do to help anyone else, they could take those fractions derived from the generous donations of outsiders. I was 23 years old then and I didn't understand where it ever said in the bible that blood fractions were allowed, but I wanted to live like anyone else would want to, so I gladly checked boxes on my little No Blood but kinda blood if it's fractional card so that I would indeed receive more help. I knew it wasn't biblical because if we were fundamentally going to apply what was written in such a literal way, then I could no more have blood fractions than I could have fornication fractions or adultery fractions or commit some murder fractions, but hey, I wanted to live. It's now 26 years later. Today in a historic moment that was published in a 16 minute video that focused on other things, the last 5 minutes had an announcement. Right before their annual "Special Talk" that is to be held this Sunday, and just two weeks or so before their annual "Memorial" celebration that is the biggest event on the JW calendar, they snuck in an announcement that autologous blood transfusions, or transfusions of your own stored blood, would now be allowed. Now, they never said the word transfusion because they're manipulative cunts in a death cult, but they gave their members permission to use their own minds to decide how they used their own blood. No, they still can't take blood from anyone else. So if a JW is in a car wreck and needs blood, they still can't take a blood transfusion from someone else if needed. But if they have some sort of odd preplanned event, they could potentially store some of their own blood, likely at great financial cost, to be used in their own care. Of course, they'd never donate to help anyone else. Help is for me, not for thee. It took 26 years for them to STILL NOT MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. They are telling members now that they can take a transfusion, of their own blood. So whereas it was previously stated that transfusions were like "eating blood" by ingesting it intravenously and therefore the transfusing itself was wrong, they are now allowed to essentially eat their own blood, just not someone else's. Yeah, that's a gross way of thinking about it, but that's Jehovah's Witnesses theology. They can now take fractions from outsiders and whole blood from themselves. I'm sure that they're trying to wait out the old timers and create change over generations to eventually get rid of this policy. They know it's evil. They know that countless people have died. Mom's after or during childbirth. People that need heart surgery. People with cancer that need surgery. Those that are in bad car accidents or other emergent situations. The Governing Body would therefore be bloodguilty for the lives lost at the hand of their evil policies and their refusal to do the right thing. Instead of making the change that we all know they're going to eventually make, to just allow transfusions, they will drag this out for more decades to put the older folks in a position where due to sunk cost they feel they cannot leave and to throw a bone to younger folks to keep them from leaving due to their insane policies. But HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE????? And where was the apology in the announcement for getting it wrong and costing more lives? "We are not embarrassed about 'adjustments' that are made; nor is an apology needed for not getting it 'exactly right' previously. We understand: this is how Jehovah operates." -Jeffrey Winder, annual meeting October 2023 Support the show and get bonuses as well by donating to the cause on our Patreon page, Patreon.com/shunned Are you struggling in some area of life? 216 – How Star Trek Helped Me Leave A Cult – For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky

This episode documents the life of Hannah, a young woman who escaped the controlling environment of the Jehovah's Witnesses and the shadow of an abusive stepfather. The narrative explores her "origin story," detailing a childhood defined by social isolation within the faith and a domestic life spent walking on eggshells to avoid her stepfather's volatile temper. A significant turning point occurs when Hannah finds intellectual liberation through science fiction, using themes from Star Trek to recognize the systemic manipulation and "ruse" of her own religious community. Ultimately, this episode serves as a testament to personal resilience, tracing Hannah's journey from a state of "survival mode" and mental health struggles to a new life built on self-education, authentic relationships, and the simple, radical pursuit of kindness. 215 – All Gas, No Brakes – The Relentless Expectations Forced Upon Young Jehovah's Witnesses

In this episode Bernie, a 44-year-old former member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, provides a poignant account of growing up within a restrictive religious organization that demanded total performance-based loyalty. The narrative traces her journey from an anxious childhood defined by social isolation and harsh discipline to her eventual shunning at age sixteen for normal adolescent behavior. Central to the story is the theme of conditional love, where communal and familial acceptance is strictly predicated on adherence to church doctrine and "spiritual" productivity. Ultimately, Bernie's story serves as a powerful testament to resilience and self-actualization, documenting how she escaped a culture of fear to find genuine peace and authentic connection outside the faith. 212 – What I DIDN'T Say On Jubilee – Ex-Scientologists & Ex-Jehovah's Witnesses – Behind The Scenes

When I got the chance to cast for the eventual October release of a video on Jubilee featuring former Jehovah's Witnesses and former Scientologists I was very excited. Jubilee is a huge channel on YouTube that hosts a wide variety of conversations. So as an ExJW myself, as an activist, as a cult recovery coach helping people to work through that former life as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and the way that it manifests today, this was in my wheelhouse. I immediately applied, went through casting, and was chosen to participate. While the experience was amazing, there were also things left unsaid. Whether it was because they had to edit hours and hours of studio time into a one hour episode or because there simply could never be enough time, the prompts brought up topics that we couldn't even come close to fleshing out. In this episode I flesh those things out. I take the time that we didn't have, and the opportunity that in one prompt I never had because I wasn't given a chance to speak up. I want to help you to understand what it was like to be there and to participate with some behind the scenes experience. And I want to address comments and concerns that I've seen regarding the things expressed in studio. I also take a little time to bring up some points not mentioned during the studio interviews that hit me afterward regarding our two groups of cult survivors. So I hope that you may find this episode entertaining, educational, or at least thought provoking in some way. 211 – "They Would Track Me": Why I Had to Run Away at 21 and Leave a Note on the Basement Door

This episode features the story of Darby, a 32-year-old former Jehovah's Witness, detailing a life shaped by generational indoctrination, intense familial and organizational control, and the profound personal and emotional consequences of leaving the faith. Born into a multi-generational Witness family, Darby's entire worldview was dictated by the organization's teachings. The narrative traces a path from a childhood marked by performance-based spirituality and corporal punishment to a young adulthood of pioneering under parental pressure. Key catalysts for Darby's departure include a fundamental inability to reconcile the doctrine of mass destruction at Armageddon with empathy for non-Witness peers, the realization of widespread hypocrisy within the congregation, and the immense conflict between the organization's homophobic stance and Darby's own sexual identity. A traumatic experience involving the cold, detached reaction of the congregation to a close friend's death served as a final breaking point. At age 21, Darby executed a planned escape, leaving home abruptly to avoid parental interference. This led to being disfellowshipped and subsequently shunned for a decade. The testimony concludes with an overview of Darby's current life, which includes marriage, homeownership, the exploration of personal identity through gender transition, and reconnection with another shunned family member, illustrating a journey toward authenticity and freedom despite the lasting trauma of the experience.
