Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind

Hopefully Awesome

Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind is our Sailor Moon rewatch podcast, where Matt and Maggie revisit the original 90s anime one episode (and movie) at a time. From Usagi’s first transformation to the final adventures of the Sailor Guardians, we’re going back to see what still holds up, what surprises us, and what we might have missed the first time around.

Each week, we break down the story, talk through the characters and their friendships, compare the original Japanese episodes with the English dubs, explore manga connections, hunt for Easter eggs, and rank the Creep of the Week. Expect plenty of nostalgia, laughs, unexpected tangents, and some wonderfully strange DiC dub moments along the way.

We’re a married couple who love 90s and 00s pop culture, anime, and geeking out over the stuff we grew up with. Whether you remember watching Serena and the Sailor Scouts on Toonami, discovered Usagi and the Sailor Guardians years later, or you’re experiencing Sailor Moon for the first time, grab your transformation pen and come along for the adventure.

Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind is part of Hopefully Awesome, where we keep things positive, have fun, and celebrate the stuff we love.

    Magic of Darkness! Esmeraude’s Invasion

This week Usagi’s jealousy over Mamoru and Chibiusa leads her straight to an all-you-can-eat cake buffet, where Esmeraude is cooking up a deliciously evil plan for the Black Moon Clan. Between Usagi’s emotional cake binge, a dessert-themed Droid that feels a little familiar, and Tuxedo Mask delivering some truly sweet advice, there’s plenty of classic Sailor Moon silliness to enjoy. But the real star might be Esmeraude herself, especially that ridiculously over-the-top laugh! We’re talking about her unforgettable introduction, the sugary showdown with the Sailor Guardians, and why this episode was such a fun addition to our Sailor Moon rewatch and series retrospective! 📺 WATCH SAILOR MOON’S COSMIC POWER REWIND ON YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0gHHg-xQBVNrrznSoTSD3-F9VR2JEBYi ❤️ SUPPORT THE SHOW Patreon: https://patreon.com/hopefullyawesome Become a YouTube Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHRvjz_pKP1Th5Y8ZIwFMtQ/join 🛍️ HOPEFULLY AWESOME MERCH https://hopefullyawesome.creator-spring.com/ 📒 SHOW NOTES AND RESOURCES Chapters 0:00 -Sailor Moon Cosmic Power Rewind - 2x30 3:11 -Magic of Darkness: Esmeraude’s Invasion Review 16:09 -War! The Mysterious New Guardian: Sailor Pluto Appears

We LOVED this one! Chibiusa’s mysterious connection to the future pulls the Sailor Guardians into her mind, where the ruined Crystal Tokyo, the Black Moon Clan, and her fear for her mother all start coming together in a way that seriously felt like Sailor Moon meets Inception. But the big moment is finally meeting Sailor Pluto, and she instantly made an impression on us. Between the dreamlike trip through Crystal Tokyo, Chibiusa learning to trust Sailor Moon, and all the new questions about the future, this episode made the season feel bigger and more exciting than ever. We’re officially very ready to see where Sailor Pluto and the Crystal Tokyo story take us next. 📺 WATCH SAILOR MOON’S COSMIC POWER REWIND ON YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0gHHg-xQBVNrrznSoTSD3-F9VR2JEBYi ❤️ SUPPORT THE SHOW Patreon: https://patreon.com/hopefullyawesome Become a YouTube Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHRvjz_pKP1Th5Y8ZIwFMtQ/join 🛍️ HOPEFULLY AWESOME MERCH https://hopefullyawesome.creator-spring.com/ 📒 SHOW NOTES AND RESOURCES Time Stamps 0:00 - Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind - 2x29 3:42 - The Mysterious New Guardian: Sailor Pluto Appears Review 15:43 - War! Defeat Rubeus: The Battle in Space

We’re celebrating the end of Rubeus’ reign and one of our favorite Usagi moments yet! Usagi refuses to give up on her friends, even when Rubeus seems to have every advantage, but watching Sailor Moon and Chibiusa finally work together, with Chibiusa trusting Usagi enough to help bring Rubeus down really makes this episode for us! A UFO Appears: The Sailor Guardians Abducted

We’re revisiting Sailor Moon R Episode 27 and Chibiusa is testing EVERY ounce of our patience. We really enjoyed this episode, especially as Rubeus makes his desperate move and the Black Moon story starts racing toward its conclusion, but stealing Usagi’s brooch leads to some seriously painful consequences. Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus put everything on the line to protect Chibiusa, only to be abducted by Rubeus and dragged aboard his UFO while Usagi is left completely helpless. And somehow Mamoru nearly earns a spot right beside Chibiusa on our frustration list after basically letting a child escape out a window. We’re talking about the Guardians’ sacrifice, Usagi’s reaction, Chibiusa’s choices, and why this cliffhanger has us VERY ready to see how the Rubeus arc wraps up. Rubeus the Heartless: The Tragic Sisters

This one felt HUGE. The penultimate chapter of the Rubeus saga cranks up the intensity almost immediately. Petz and Calaveras come in swinging, Chibi-usa finally discovers that Usagi and the girls are the Sailor Guardians, and suddenly one of the biggest secrets of the season is out in the open. Then there’s Sailor Planet Power! Seeing the Guardians combine their strength against the dimensional tear is exactly the kind of massive magical team-up moment we love from Sailor Moon, and it made the whole episode feel genuinely epic. We’re talking about Rubeus proving just how heartless he really is, the Spectre Sisters reaching an emotional turning point, Chibi-usa learning even more about the Silver Crystal, and why this episode has us ridiculously excited to see how the Rubeus saga wraps up. For Friendship: Ami vs. Bertheir

We’re giving Ami the spotlight in this episode as we revisit Sailor Moon R Episode 25, “For Friendship: Ami vs. Berthier,” and yeah, we loved this one. Ami and Berthier facing off is such a fun matchup, especially when their water powers go head-to-head and their rivalry carries all the way into a high-stakes game of chess. But what really makes this Sailor Moon R rewatch hit is the heart underneath it all, with Ami refusing to abandon her friends and Koan returning when Berthier needs her most. We may be getting another Sailor Guardian paired against a Spectre Sister, but when it gives us this much Ami goodness, we’re absolutely here for it. Battle of the Flames of Love! Mars vs. Koan

This episode gives Sailor Mars the spotlight she deserves. Rei and Koan’s fire-powered showdown is thrilling, but what really makes the episode work for us is everything it reveals about Rei. She can absolutely be a hothead, pun not intended, but underneath that fire is someone who believes deeply in love, loyalty, and protecting the people she cares about. That becomes even more powerful when Koan loses everything she thought she had with Rubeus. Instead of simply defeating her enemy, Rei sees someone who deserves another chance and fights for Koan to have a future of her own. It’s an exciting Sailor Mars battle, a surprisingly emotional look at Koan, and one of our favorite examples yet of just how layered Rei really is. Awaken the Sleeping Beauty: Mamoru’s Distress

We’re revisiting Sailor Moon R 2x23, “Awaken the Sleeping Beauty: Mamoru’s Distress,” an episode where Mamoru continues making the breakup way harder than it needs to be. Our Sailor Moon R rewatch podcast digs into Mamoru’s mysterious nightmares, Usagi’s heartbreak and jealousy, Chibiusa accidentally drawing the attention of the Black Moon Clan, and the race to save Usagi after she’s trapped under a deadly sleeping spell. And then there’s Tuxedo Mask riding in on a motorcycle to wake her with a kiss. Look, we still have MANY questions about Mamoru’s decision-making and his refusal to just talk to somebody, but Tuxedo Mask on that motorcycle? Extremely cool. We’re breaking down the romance, drama, ridiculous misunderstandings, and that surprisingly emotional final moment as our Sailor Moon series retrospective continues deeper into the Black Moon arc. Protect Chibiusa: The Clash of Ten Warriors

Our Sailor Moon R rewatch podcast reaches “Protect Chibi-Usa: Clash of the Ten Warriors,” and Chibiusa is seriously winning us over. Watching Usagi and the Sailor Guardians race to protect her from Rubeus and all four Spectre Sisters turns into an incredible magical girl showdown, but it’s the sweeter moments that really got us. Chibiusa finally realizes that Sailor Moon is someone she can trust, while Wiseman discovers the connection between Usagi and Neo-Queen Serenity. We may have already known that Usagi is Chibiusa’s future mom, but seeing that relationship begin to take shape still blew our minds, especially with the mystery surrounding why future Usagi appears to be sick, unconscious, or possibly even dead. This Sailor Moon R episode sets up a much bigger emotional story, and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out. The Beach, the Island and a Vacation: The Guardian’s Break

This episode of Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind takes us to the beach for Sailor Moon R 2x21, “The Beach, the Island and a Vacation: The Guardian’s Break,” a banned DiC episode that gives the Sailor Guardians a sunny little break from the usual chaos. We’re talking Rei’s island training, Chibi-Usa’s dinosaur friendship, beach episode silliness, and why this one is fun and breezy even if the whole plesiosaur plot had us rolling our eyes a bit. It’s not a great episode, but it is a very weird, very lighthearted Sailor Moon rewatch podcast hangout, and sometimes that’s enough. Usagi’s Parental Love: the Curry Romance Triangle

We’re talking Sailor Moon R episode 20, “Usagi’s Parental Love: the Curry Romance Triangle,” and how this sweet little curry adventure quietly gives us one of the warmest Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibiusa episodes so far. Chibiusa is missing home, Usagi is trying so hard to help, and Mamoru gets pulled into the middle of it all in a way that feels surprisingly cozy, emotional, and a little bittersweet. From the hand-holding moment that got us right in the feelings to the joy of seeing these three almost settle into something happy for a minute, this Sailor Moon R rewatch podcast is all about the soft family vibes, magical girl chaos, and that tiny ache of knowing things can’t stay this peaceful forever. In Search of the Silver Crystal: Chibi-Usa’s Secret

Join us for Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind as we dive into Sailor Moon R Episode 18, “In Search of the Silver Crystal: Chibi-USA’s Secret!” This episode really made us feel for Chibiusa as we finally get more of her backstory and see just how scared, lonely, and desperate she is to get back home to her parents. Between the storm, the emotional reveals, the Spectre Sisters chaos, and Usagi trying her best, this one gave us a lot to talk about. Also… Mamoru is AWFUL here. We were genuinely frustrated with how he treats Usagi in this episode, even with all the sweet Chibiusa moments mixed in. Total emotional rollercoaster in the best Sailor Moon way. Women Must Be Strong and Beautiful: Rei’s New Special Technique

In this episode of Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind, we’re diving into Sailor Moon R 2x17, “Women Must Be Strong and Beautiful: Rei’s New Special Technique,” where Rei finally gets a major power-up while Grandpa’s ridiculous self-defense class somehow turns into the center of another Dark Kingdom-style disaster. Between Chibiusa trying to toughen up, Koan corrupting the shrine’s training hall, and Grandpa earning plenty of eye-rolls along the way, this Sailor Moon R episode is goofy, chaotic, and honestly pretty fun. The big highlight though is Sailor Mars unlocking Burning Mandala, giving Rei one of her coolest moments in the series so far. A Guardian’s Friendship: Goodbye, Ami

In this episode of Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind, we’re breaking down Sailor Moon R Season 2 Episode 16, “A Guardian’s Friendship: Goodbye, Ami!” in our rewatch podcast + retrospective. Honestly, we loved getting an Ami-focused story again. It’s light and sweet on the surface (ice cream shop antics, Chibiusa doing Chibiusa things), but it’s also quietly emotional because Ami is staring down a real choice: chase an amazing future in Germany, or stay with the friends who’ve become her team and her safe place. We talk about how the episode handles that push and pull, why Ami’s decision hits even if you’re side-eyeing the “give up your dream” angle a little, and how Usagi’s fear of being left behind makes the whole thing feel extra human. Add in the new transformation items, a very suspicious ice cream situation, and Mercury showing up right when it matters, and you’ve got an episode that’s warm, friendship-forward, and surprisingly full of feels for something that starts with ice cream. Usagi Devastated: Mamoru Declares a Break-Up

In this episode of Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind, we’re breaking down Sailor Moon R Season 2 Episode 15: Usagi Devastated: Mamoru Declares a Break-Up and we’re equal parts in love with the drama and furious that Mamoru basically dumps Usagi out of nowhere after those crystal-city visions start wrecking him. While Chibiusa clings to him, the Tsukino family gets hypnotized, and Usagi spirals hard trying to “fix” everything (including the absolute trap of a cosmetics shop that turns heartbreak into a monster-of-the-week situation). We dig into why this breakup hits so hard on a rewatch, what it does to the Usagi/Mamoru relationship tracking, and how the Black Moon Clan plot quietly keeps moving in the background. Angel or Devil? The Mysterious Girl from the Sky

Our Sailor Moon rewatch podcast dives into “Angel or Devil? Mysterious Girl from the Sky,” and the moment the series flips into a whole new arc when little Usagi (Chibiusa) literally crashes into everyone’s lives. We’re breaking down her chaotic first impression, the hilarious but suspicious “cousin” situation (no, not THAT cousin situation), and how this episode balances comedy with a real sense of mystery around the Silver Crystal and the “Rabbit.” We also get into the debut of Rubeus and Koan, what the Black Moon Clan adds to the story, and why Chibiusa’s connection to Usagi and Mamoru already feels way deeper than it should. It’s weird, funny, slightly unhinged, and somehow still heartfelt. Basically the perfect start to this next chapter of Sailor Moon R. Disconnecting Love: The Raging Makai Tree

This Sailor Moon rewatch podcast got surprisingly intense, because “Disconnecting Love: The Raging Makai Tree” is where the Makai Tree arc stops feeling weird and starts feeling genuinely tragic. In this episode of our Sailor Moon Season 2 rewatch and retrospective, we’re talking about how desperate everything gets once Ail and An realize all that stolen energy still isn’t enough. Between Mamoru getting pulled straight into danger and the Makai Tree itself lashing out like a living heartbreak machine, this one has a lot more pain in it than you might expect from this stretch of the series. It’s messy, dramatic, and kind of haunting in the best Sailor Moon way. After School Trouble: Usagi is a Target

This week on our Sailor Moon rewatch podcast, we’re talking about “After School Trouble: Usagi is a Target,” a weirdly funny and surprising Sailor Moon Season 2 episode that puts Usagi and Natsumi on a collision course. Between Miss Haruna’s chaotic detention, the ridiculously competitive “who gets Mamoru” challenge, and Natsumi literally running on empty, this one has that classic mix of comedy, jealousy, and danger that makes the Makaiju arc so fascinating to revisit. We get more of the Ail and A mess, more tension around Mamoru, and another reminder that Natsumi is a lot more complicated than she first seems. There’s a lot going on here under the silliness.
