This week, we had a candid conversation with each other and then with registered sports dietitian, Amy Goldsmith, founder of Kindred Nutrition about the weight of weight. As runners, we often feel that we need to look a certain way or be a certain weight to run faster, and, in an effort to change our body composition, we find ourselves in a pattern of injury and frustration. In this episode, we talk with each other about our own observations and struggles as coaches and runners and then we talk with Amy, who had us on as guests on her new podcast, Don't be Foodish. We also talk about the value of consulting with a registered sports dietitian. To find one in your area, check out www.ams.eatright.org. Mar 12, 2021 · 1 hr 13 minEpisode 80: Bobbi Gibb, the First Woman to Run the Boston Marathon, Shares Why Representation Matters
In 1966, Roberta "Bobbi" Gibb, dressed in a baseball hat and sweatshirt in an attempt to disguise herself as a man, hid in the bushes near the start line of the Boston Marathon. When the gun went off, Bobbi jumped out of the bushes and started running as an unofficial entrant (women were not allowed to run until 1972). As Bobbi made the journey from Hopkinton to Boston, she knew that her life had changed forever. Bobbi crossed the finish line in 3:21 in 1966 to win the race. She won again in 1967 (Kathrine Switzer, who also ran that year and finished behind Bobbi, was the first registered entrant to run the race), and again in 1968. In Bobbi's words, when she decided to run that day as an unregistered runner, she "wanted to change the way people thought about women. I wanted to change that, because I just couldn’t live in a world like this.” In addition to being a pioneer in running, Bobbi is a scientist, artist, lawyer, mother, author, and humanitarian. At age 78, Bobbi continue to run every day "for about an hour," and in her spare time, she creates sculptures, including a sculpture that will soon be displayed in Hopkinton...of Bobbi herself. We hope that you enjoy this conversation and feel inspired by Bobbi's courage and her determination to live boldly and curiously and dream big. Thank you to Oofos Footwear for sponsoring the podcast and to our editor, Erin Bryant. Sara Mae won the Boston Marathon as an unofficial winner from 1969 to 1971 before women were allowed to officially enter the race in 1972. In addition to winning Boston three times, Sara Mae placed third at the NYC Marathon in 1971 in a time of 3:08, and placed fifth at Boston in 1972 (her first race as an official entrant) and 1973. In addition to running, Sara Mae was and continues to be an avid participant in ski-orienteering and cross-country skiing. Sara Mae and Larry founded the Cambridge Sports Union in 1962, which remains one of Boston's premiere running and ski clubs. Sara Mae and Larry share how she began her career at a five mile road race in Marlborough, Massachusetts, after Larry challenged her to run an 8 minute mile. For years, Sara Mae and Larry worked to convince the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) to allow women to participate in races. They share the barriers she overcame to eventually have the opportunity to race officially with a bib number.
