Rock Solid Families

Rock Solid Families is committed to helping educate, equip, and empower families to be all God created them to be! Merrill and Linda Hutchinson began Rock Solid Families in October of 2018. They have over 60 years of combined experience in teaching, public speaking, counseling, ministry, and coaching. After much prayer, Merrill and Linda made the decision to step down from their full time positions in the church and public school to focus on strengthening families. Both believe that healthy schools, churches, and communities depend on strong and healthy families. This weekly podcast is made possible through the generous financial support of community partners. With the help of local sponsors and the word spreading through listeners like you, Rock Solid Families is helping to build stronger communities one family at a time!

Who is Shaping Your Child's Heart? Ep. 352

Welcome back to the Rock Solid Families podcast! Here is a bonus episode this month, since this is the 5th Monday of July. In this episode, Linda Hutchinson is joined by Andy Dalton to wrap up the monthly theme of July - Freedom and Identity. Let me ask you this question: who or what is pouring into your child's heart? Is it social media? YouTube, Netflix, ESPN, Hulu, etc. You get the gist. If your child spends hours daily in front of a screen, there's a good chance your child is being poured into but not by the things of Christ. In this episode, Linda and Andy talk about the negative effects of too much screen time. You'll hear things like ESS (or Electronic Screen Syndrome) on top of other issues too much screen time can cause. But don't worry, this isn't just a scare tactic podcast. The team at Rock Solid Families gives out great advice for you and your family can do to help right the ship or to be proactive in your children's lives. Hint, it's all based on the word of God! If you like what you hear, please reach out to the team at Rock Solid Families by going to their website https://www.rocksolidfamilies.org/ or you can call their office (812) 576-7625. Renewal with Christ - Ep. 338

Renewal with Christ - Ep. 338 Linda Hutchinson and co-host Kimm Hackworth discuss spiritual renewal as the new year begins. The Theme of Renewal Linda and Kimm aim to guide listeners in enhancing their relationships with God and setting an intentional rhythm for their spiritual lives. They emphasize that spiritual renewal can take various forms, often requiring intentionality and the need to create space away from the distractions of everyday life. The discussion begins by referencing Romans 12:2, warning against conforming to the world’s patterns and instead focusing on transformation through the renewing of the mind. Spiritual Disciplines The hosts dive into spiritual disciplines, a concept introduced by Richard Foster, which includes practices meant to foster a deeper relationship with God. They clarify that these disciplines are not burdensome tasks but are meant to cultivate intimacy with God. They discuss various inward disciplines such as: 1. Study and Meditation - Engaging with the Word of God for revelation, not mere knowledge. 2. Prayer - Cultivating an interactive relationship with God. 3. Fasting - Withholding from certain things to reveal dependencies and deepen reliance on God. Kimm shares her preference for inward disciplines and how those help in personal reflection, while Linda emphasizes the importance of balance between inward and outward disciplines. Outward and Corporate Disciplines The conversation then shifts to outward disciplines, which are about changing behavior to align with spiritual truths. Some key practices mentioned include: •Simplicity - Reducing material possessions to focus on spiritual values. •Silence and Solitude - Taking time to be alone with God. •Sabbath Rest - Intentionally resting and trusting in God’s provision. •Service - Helping others as a form of worship and humility. They also discuss corporate disciplines that involve community, such as worship, confession, and accountability, emphasizing the importance of being connected with others in faith. Family Dynamics and Legacy Linda and Kimm reflect on how spiritual practices at home influence children. They recount personal stories from their own families, illustrating how their children observed and internalized these spiritual rhythms. They stress the importance of modeling faith and creating intentional spaces for spiritual growth within families, reminding listeners that children are always watching and learning from their parents’ actions. Final Encouragement Linda encourages listeners to choose one spiritual discipline to focus on for the next 30 days, urging them to reflect on what they can remove or add to their lives to experience renewal. They conclude by thanking their sponsors again and reinforcing the mission of RockSolid Families to help strengthen families in the community. Conclusion The podcast delivers a thoughtful discussion on spiritual renewal, emphasizing intentionality, the significance of community, and leaving a legacy of faith for future generations. It invites listeners to embark on their journey of spiritual growth as the new year begins. rocksolidfamilies.org Support the show #Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith, #affairs, #infidelity

Renewal Begins with Breaking Free from the Patterns of this World - Ep. 337

Renewal is not about becoming new people as much as remembering who we already are in Christ. Listen in as I read these words from the apostle Paul to the church in Rome. He was writing to the Romans but so much of it applies to us today as well. Read Romans 12:1–2 Focus: Step 1 of renewal—stop conforming. What Does “Conform to the Patterns of This World” Mean? Ephesians 4 mentions some of the patterns of this world: In vs. 22 on down You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires. What do the Patterns of this world look like for you today?? Busyness = that somehow how busy your calendar is defines your worth and value PERSONAL COMFORT-That somehow your personal comfort matters more than your character IMPULSIVE REACTIONS-That its ok to just impulsively react rather than intentionally and thoughtfully respond IDENTITY-Who you are is what you do SELF SUFFICIENCY-That its weakness to surrender and be dependent on God. You somehow have to muscle up and do it all yourself. STRIVING FOR MORE- rather being content with what we’ve been given. Key Truth: The truth is most families don’t consciously choose worldliness—they slowly absorb it. We become kind of like a chameleon based on what or who we’re around. Step 1 of Renewal: Awareness Before Action You can’t renew what you don’t recognize. Practical Reflection Questions for Listeners: What voices are shaping our values more than Scripture? What patterns feel “normal” but don’t feel life-giving? Encouragement: Awareness is not condemnation—it’s an invitation. Advice Practical Ways to Stop Conforming: Interrupt the Noise around you and Evaluate Evaluate: Media intake Social media rhythms News consumption Ask: Is this shaping my peace or stealing it? Practical Tip: Try a weekly “noise fast” (one evening with no screens, just presence). Slow Down to Notice What’s Forming You Renewal requires margin. The world disciples through hurry. Practical Tip: Build in “pause points”: Morning prayer before phones Family check-ins at dinner Sabbath rhythms (even imperfect ones) Name the Lies You’ve Normalized Examples: “This is just how families are.” “We’re too busy to change.” “It’s not that big of a deal.” Truth: What you don’t challenge, you allow to shape you. Offer Yourself Again Tie back to Romans 12:1: Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Renewal begins with surrender Simple Prayer: “Lord, I offer You my mind, my time, my reactions, and my family rhythms.” Hope-Filled Reframe: Renewal Is a Process Paul doesn’t say “be instantly transformed” He says “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” Encouragement for Families: Small changes matter Consistent choices build new patterns God is patient and present in the process Call to Action: Commit to one small shift this week Write it down! Pray over it as a family Closing Line:“Renewal doesn’t start when life slows down. It starts when we choose to stop drifting and start offering ourselves—right where we are.” rocksolidfamilies.org Support the show #Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith, #affairs, #infidelity

Mission Of Christ - Ep 336

Introduction - “If someone asked you, Why did Jesus come? How would you answer?” “And what does His mission have to do with your marriage, your parenting, your friendships?” Those aren’t just questions for each other here on today’s podcast. If you claim to follow this Jesus….It’s a question we ALL have to be ready to answer. 1 Peter 3:15 says “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” Jesus didn’t come just to save us from something—He came to invite us into something. Key Scripture Luke 19:10 – “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Background - What Was the Mission of Christ? Core Truth Jesus’ mission was redemption, reconciliation, and restoration—bringing people back to God and restoring God’s design for life and relationships. Break it down: A. To Reveal the Father John 14:9 – “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” Jesus showed us: God’s love, his mercy and his truth all in one being. B. To Save the Lost Matthew 1:21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[a] because he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus didn’t come just to forgive our sins, but to transform our lives. C. To Fulfill God’s Promises and Establish the Kingdom of God Luke 4: 18-19 but also found in Isaiah 61- The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Discussion Prompt “How does your picture of God change when you look at Jesus?” Advice - 3. How Did Jesus Live Out His Mission? Jesus’ Method Matters A. He Came Close B. He Built Relationships C. He Served, Not Controlled Application The mission of Christ is relational, not performative. It starts at the table, not the stage. 4. How Do We Fit Into Christ’s Mission Today? A. We Are Sent People B. He’s called us to Reflect Him, Not Replace Him C. Mission Begins at Home Challenge - So as we close…Let’s us just share some Practical Ways to Live on Mission This Week Simple, attainable steps: Pray daily with Intention Practice Presence Model Christ at Home Invite Others In Reflection Question “If Christ’s mission was love and restoration, how will my life reflect that this week?” Support the show #Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith, #affairs, #infidelity

Women on Mission - Ep. 335

In the latest episode of the RockSolid Families podcast host Linda Hutchinson and newcomer coach Kimm Hackworth engage in an empowering discussion about what it means to be a woman on a mission. As Linda and Kimm dive into the topic, they reflect on the previous discussions from the Strong Dads podcast, which centered around men living with purpose. This leads to an exploration of how women, too, can embrace their missions in everyday life. Kimm shares her early misconceptions that being missional meant only participating in international trips, realizing instead that anyone can live missionally within their daily surroundings regardless of their life circumstances. They emphasize that living on a mission involves aligning one's daily actions with a divine purpose, rather than solely engaging in specific tasks. The conversation touches on the common struggles women face in the church regarding their roles and how societal pressures can stifle their willingness to step into leadership positions. Throughout their dialogue, Kimm recalls influential women in her life, who have demonstrated resilience and dedication to their calling. Linda shares the profound impact her grandmother had on her, illustrating a life lived with faith and purpose, despite numerous challenges. Shifting the focus to biblical examples, they highlight Priscilla, a woman in the New Testament who exemplifies partnership in ministry, and Esther, who courageously stepped into her calling to save her people. These narratives serve to inspire women listening to recognize their own opportunities for impact. As the episode progresses, Linda and Kimm discuss the importance of community, suggesting that the isolation brought on by modern society can hinder women from sharing their stories and living out their missions. They introduce an exciting initiative: the Women on Mission online group launching in 2026. This platform aims to foster connections among women, encouraging them to deepen their relationship with God, each other, and their families. The hosts conclude with a powerful reminder that living missionally is not about adding more tasks to one's life but about reframing one's purpose and being part of God's larger narrative. They invite listeners to reflect on the impact of women in their own lives, urging them to take actionable steps toward living out their missions. rocksolidfamilies.org Support the show #Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith, #affairs, #infidelity
