Revelation Within On the Go!

Heidi Bylsma-Epperson and Christina Motley

Revelation Within equips people with life-giving, grace-infused mind renewal tools to deepen their intimacy with Jesus so that counterfeit comforts (like overeating) lose their allure, and the joy and hope of Jesus fills their lives, satisfying their souls.

In our podcast we talk about mind renewal, tips and tricks for getting and staying free from counterfeit comforts like overeating (over-scrolling, over-drinking, over-anythinging...)

We began as Thin Within in 1975, a pioneer in intuitive, mindful eating back when diets were in their hey day! Thin Within has taught people how to tune in to their body's natural signals of hunger and satisfaction, remaining present with their meals and delighting in tastes and textures--and the Lord!

In the 1980s, Thin Within became a Christian ministry, showing people that the emptiness that they have felt and often filled with food that their bodies don't require, was really placed in there to be filled full with God through Jesus. He wants to set us free from all strongholds!

We  rebranded our ministry and our podcast in 2023 to Revelation Within.

    Mind Renewal For Peaceful Eating

Send us Fan Mail If food feels like your fastest escape hatch, you’re not alone and you’re not stuck. In this episode, we’re getting brutally honest about the ways we’ve both eaten over emotions and hard seasons, then felt crushed by guilt and shame afterward. The surprising turn? Lasting change didn’t start with a tighter food plan. It started with mind renewal. We talk through Christina’s story of reaching out for coaching while feeling hopeless on the inside, even though everything looked “fine” from the outside. Together we unpack what it means to wash your mind of long-held lies about food, eating, and body image and replace them with God’s truth. We also share why forgiveness can be the hinge point that shifts everything, especially when resentment, grief, or feeling mistreated sends you straight to the pantry. Along the way, we mention a practical resource that helped us, Barb Raveling’s I Deserve A Donut And Other Lies That Make Me Eat, and how guided questions can uncover what’s really going on under a craving. From there, we connect the dots to Holy Spirit-led eating and peaceful eating: inviting God into meals, learning to enjoy food without fear, listening to your body without condemnation, and discovering what freedom tastes like in everyday life. We anchor it in Romans 12:1-2 because transformation is real, but it requires ongoing attention to what we’re thinking and believing. If this gives you hope, subscribe, share with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more people can find the path to peace with food. When Church Comments Hurt

Send us Fan Mail One offhand comment at church can stick for decades, especially when it’s wrapped in a smile and served next to a potluck plate. In this episode we’re talking about how comments about food and body size can leave lasting wounds—even when they’re made with a smile or good intentions. Church should be a place where we experience grace, yet conversations about weight loss, body image, and what we eat can sometimes leave us feeling judged or ashamed. We explore why comments like “You look amazing! How much weight did you lose?” and jokes about being “bad” for eating dessert can shape the way we think about our bodies and food. Looking at Romans 14, we’re reminded that what’s on someone’s plate doesn’t reveal the condition of their heart, and we aren’t called to measure one another’s faithfulness by what we eat or avoid. We also discuss fasting, the phrase “your body is a temple,” and how Scripture can be misused to create pressure rather than offer freedom. Through Matthew 6, Romans 8:1, and the reminder that God looks at the heart rather than outward appearance, we explore how to recognize the lies that hurtful comments can leave behind and replace them with truth. We share practical ways to prepare for church gatherings, establish gentle boundaries, and respond to food and body conversations with grace. Our hope is that we can help create church communities where hospitality matters more than appearances and everyone can gather at the table without fear of food shame. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find freedom from food shame. Grief, Cravings, and Comfort

Send us Fan Mail We’re talking about something many of us have experienced but may not recognize: how grief can show up as cravings, grazing, or the urge to keep opening the pantry even when we aren’t physically hungry. Grief isn’t limited to the death of someone we love—it can come with a difficult relationship, changes in our bodies or health, a shift at home, or the ending of a season we weren’t ready to release. Instead of criticizing ourselves, we explore what it looks like to become curious and ask, “What happened today? What am I feeling? What am I hoping this food will do for me?” We also talk about why food shouldn’t be dismissed as a “counterfeit comfort.” Food is a good gift from God; it simply was never meant to carry the weight of our sorrow. We share practical tools we use with ourselves and our clients, including exploring the memories connected to particular foods, pairing grief with gratitude, and gently “titrating” difficult emotions so they don’t become overwhelming. Most of all, we return to the comfort of knowing that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted—and we don’t need perfect words or a polished prayer to come to Him. If grief has been showing up at your pantry door, we hope this conversation helps you respond with compassion, curiosity, and hope. Bringing Food to Jesus

Send us Fan Mail We’re exploring what it can look like to be led by the Holy Spirit in something as everyday—and sometimes complicated—as eating, body image, and the temptations we face around food. We know this area can feel too small to bring to God, especially when past experiences, fear, or shame have made hunger and fullness feel unsafe. Together, we talk about why we tend to hide in this area and challenge the belief that God meets us with disappointment. Looking at Romans 14, we unpack the freedom of recognizing that different people may be led to different choices around food, dieting, tracking, weighing, GLP-1 medications, and medical needs. Our standing with God isn’t determined by which plan we follow; what matters is learning to bring our choices honestly to Jesus and extend that same grace to others. We also share five intentions for Spirit-led eating—not as another Christian diet, but as a way of learning to listen and respond with wisdom: practicing gratitude at meals, choosing portions thoughtfully, creating a calmer eating environment, recognizing when we’ve had “just enough,” and allowing flexibility for different seasons and medical needs. We hope this conversation encourages you to bring your relationship with food, your body, and your choices into the presence of God with greater freedom and honesty. When the Scale Loses Power

Send us Fan Mail Many of us have experienced how a bathroom scale can become far more than a source of information. One number can suddenly seem to tell us whether we’re succeeding or failing, affecting our mood, our eating, our body image, and even how willing we are to bring our honest feelings to God. In this episode, we get practical and honest about the signs that the scale may have stopped being neutral information and started defining us—from thinking about the number all day and repeatedly stepping on and off to chasing relief or avoiding the scale altogether because of shame. We talk about why grace isn’t passivity, body acceptance doesn’t mean giving up on health, and surrender doesn’t mean denying our desire for change. We also share Christina’s story of bringing her struggle with the scale directly to the Lord and how her perspective changed years later when cancer treatment meant being weighed regularly in a medical setting. That experience helped her see weight in a broader context and approach the scale as a tool rather than a judge. Finally, we offer practical mind-renewal questions and gentle coaching strategies to help create space between the number on the scale and your next choice. If you’re longing for less scale anxiety and more peace rooted in your identity in Christ, we hope this conversation gives you a new way to engage the scale without allowing it to define you. Coaching From the Inside Out

Send us Fan Mail We know that wanting to lose weight can sometimes feel like a spiritual problem, so in this episode we tackle the honest question many people quietly ask: “Is it wrong to want to lose weight?” We talk about how to hold that desire with open hands rather than allowing our weight to determine our worth, safety, acceptance, or hope for the future. We explore the deeper beliefs that can sit underneath weight-loss goals—“If I’m smaller, I’ll be accepted,” “Then I’ll feel in control,” or “Then I can finally live”—and consider what happens when we bring those longings honestly before God. We also explain what one-on-one coaching looks like within Revelation Within: starting exactly where you are, moving gently, and allowing God to reveal what He wants to show us in His timing. We share why we moved from Thin Within to Revelation Within and why our focus is ultimately on knowing God and growing in our identity in Christ, rather than simply pursuing a different body. We also take an honest look at GLP-1 medications and weight-loss surgery, recognizing that these tools may affect appetite and weight while acknowledging that they don’t automatically address body shame, fear of regain, or the deeper reasons we turn to food. For us, mind renewal is an ongoing practice that helps us keep bringing those deeper places to God—even when life gets hard. If you’re tired of the scale defining you and you want real food freedom rooted in faith, listen now, then share this with a friend who needs gentleness and truth. The Shape-Shifting Trap

Send us Fan Mail If you’ve ever believed that a smaller body would finally buy you peace, this conversation meets you with honesty and real hope. In this episode we talk about the desire so many women have to change their bodies, hoping a smaller body will finally bring peace. We don’t shame that desire, but we also recognize that it can’t carry everything we’re asking it to carry. Christina shares what she has seen through years of one-on-one coaching with women in all kinds of circumstances—from those who have tried countless diets or are considering bariatric surgery or GLP-1 medications, to women who appear “fine” on the outside but live with body dysmorphia and daily shame. Again and again, we’ve seen that the struggle with food and body image may be a symptom of something deeper. We also explore mind renewal as a daily practice rooted in Romans 12:2 and consider how we can use weight-loss tools without allowing weight to become our guiding light. We talk about loss, changing identities, counterfeit comforts, and what happens when we begin replacing shame and striving with truth, grace, and surrender. Most of all, we explore what it can look like to stop viewing God as disappointed in us and instead learn to trust Him as kind, present, and faithful in every part of our journey. If this resonates, listen all the way through, then subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more women can find this path to freedom. The Story Behind Our Name

Send us Fan Mail We’re sharing the story behind a significant change for us: why we let go of the name Thin Within and stepped into Revelation Within. We go back to Thin Within’s roots in the 1970s, when the simple practice of eating when physically hungry and stopping when satisfied offered a welcome alternative to strict diet rules. While we still value that wisdom, we’ve also seen how even a helpful boundary can become another form of control when fear, perfectionism, or shame take over. If you’ve ever turned “Am I hungry?” into a scorecard you could pass or fail, you’ll understand why this distinction matters. Over the years, God continued to deepen what we were learning about the “hungers beneath the hunger,” mind renewal, and freedom from shame. Romans 12:2 has become central as we learn to recognize lies about our bodies and our worth, practice truth, and distinguish conviction from condemnation. We’ve also discovered that this journey is about far more than food—it’s about discipleship, identity in Christ, and learning to turn to God instead of counterfeit comforts when life hurts. In Revelation Within, our focus is on allowing God to reveal truth and guide us toward the next faithful step, rather than making a particular body outcome the goal. We hope this conversation helps you understand not only why our name changed, but where God is leading us now. Is Revelation Within For You?

Send us Fan Mail We know how easily dieting can pull us into an exhausting cycle of rigid control, inevitable slip-ups, and shame. In this episode, we take a clear and honest look at what Christian freedom with food can actually look like—and whether it’s really different from another diet plan with spiritual language added. We explain what Revelation Within is at its core: a Christ-centered approach that brings mind renewal, identity in Christ, spirit-led eating, joyful movement, and learning from experience together. Rather than focusing only on changing behavior, we talk about what may be happening underneath our eating and how food can become a way of coping with loneliness, anxiety, pressure, or pain. We also share some practical ways to recognize whether this approach might fit where you are right now. Maybe you’re simply tired of the shame-and-control cycle, questioning the messages of diet culture, or longing to bring your faith into your relationship with food and your body. We’re honest about outcomes, too: we don’t promise weight loss, but we don’t shame anyone for wanting body change. Instead, we invite you to bring your hopes, fears, and mixed motives to God and learn to trust Him one step at a time. If you’ve been wondering what Revelation Within is really about, we hope this conversation gives you clarity, encouragement, and a starting point for your own journey. Guest Interview: Peace With Food

Send us Fan Mail We sit down with Michelle for an honest and encouraging conversation about what it looks like to find peace with food after decades of dieting, striving, and struggling with body image. Michelle shares how she first discovered Thin Within (later Revelation Within), walked away when things seemed “good,” and eventually returned when her efforts to control food began to unravel. Together, we explore spirit-led eating, the difference between restriction and freedom, and why grace—not willpower—is at the heart of lasting change. Michelle also vulnerably shares about early image pressure, trauma, and using food as comfort, and how she is learning to let Jesus meet her in those tender places without condemnation. We also get practical as Michelle shares the mind-renewal tools she uses in everyday life, including the simple question, “What is true, God?” We talk about using Scripture to challenge lies like “I’m no good” and “I have to fix this to be okay,” while discovering how a secure identity in Christ affects not only our relationship with food and our bodies, but also fear of man, conflict, disappointment, and anxiety. If you’re longing for Christian eating freedom, healing from diet culture, or a calmer relationship with food and your body, we hope Michelle’s story gives you both encouragement and a next step toward experiencing God’s grace right in the middle of everyday life. What Are You Really Seeking?

Send us Fan Mail Sometimes our lives look “fine” on the outside while we feel ruled on the inside by pressure, cravings, people-pleasing, and the belief that we have to earn rest. In this episode, we get practical about boundaries as loving limits that protect our freedom—especially when food, body image, exercise, and coping habits become tangled up with shame and urgency. We begin with movement and exercise, talking honestly about how easy it is to use workouts to repay eating, chase worthiness, or push through pain. From there, we explore “counterfeit comforts” like scrolling, streaming, shopping, overworking, alcohol, and reassurance-seeking. One of the simplest tools we return to is the pause: before we reach for the next distraction or comfort, we stop, name what we’re feeling, ask, “What am I hoping to receive?”, and invite God into the moment so we can choose rather than simply react. We also talk about boundaries with our time, relationships, and rest, including practical words we can use when we encounter pressure, disrespect, harsh tones, or yelling. We explore how over-explaining can become an attempt to manage someone else’s opinion and how Galatians 6 helps us distinguish between carrying another person’s burdens and taking responsibility for their load. And because productivity culture often teaches us that we can rest only after everything is finished—which is basically never—we come back to the importance of receiving rest without having to earn it. We close with five discernment questions to bring to God, helping us recognize the difference between healthy boundaries and fear-based walls, punishment, or control. If this conversation helps you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a grace-filled “no,” and leave a review so more people can find the podcast. Can Boundaries Set You Free?

Send us Fan Mail A boundary can sound like rejection, but we’ve discovered that it can also be an act of trust. In this episode, we take what we’ve learned about boundaries in Spirit-led eating and expand it into everyday life—our time, attention, relationships, rest, productivity, conversations, and even the places we turn for comfort when we’re stressed or afraid. We talk honestly about common boundary traps, including using boundaries to avoid difficult conversations, trying to control other people, or believing that perfect boundaries will protect us from ever being hurt or disappointed. Grounding the conversation in Scripture and Jesus’ example, we explore how healthy boundaries can create space for life to flourish and how Sabbath reminds us that we were never meant to live at the mercy of endless demands. We also get practical, asking two questions from 1 Corinthians 6:12: Is this beneficial, and is this beginning to master me? We apply those questions to social media, diet culture content, and the emotional “fruit” left behind by what we consume. Christina shares candidly about what breast cancer treatment, fear, and online content revealed about what she was taking in, while Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to guard our hearts. We also offer practical ways to step away from body and diet conversations—and an internal boundary for responding to cruel self-talk with truth and compassion. Ultimately, boundaries aren’t about controlling life or avoiding discomfort; they’re about learning to trust God enough to choose what helps us live and love well. If this encourages you, subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review. What boundary would be a holy yes to peace for you? What If You Stopped Dieting?!

Send us Fan Mail Diet culture can make eating feel like a courtroom, where every bite seems to prove whether we’re “good” or “bad.” We want something different. In this episode, we share a grace-filled approach to eating boundaries that doesn’t turn food into another diet plan or spiritual performance. We explore a simple, body-honoring rhythm: hunger opens the meal, and the peaceful place of “just enough” closes it. Along the way, we unpack the five intentions of Spirit-led eating in five memorable words: wait, welcome, choose, attend, stop. We talk about what each one looks like in real life—from waiting for hunger without watching the clock, to welcoming God into an ordinary meal, choosing food that delights and supports us, attending to the moment without demanding perfection, and stopping from a place of care rather than fear. We also address the questions that can make this approach feel complicated. Is listening to hunger and fullness really spiritual, or are we simply following our bodies? What happens when hunger cues have been muted by years of dieting, stress, recovery needs, health challenges, or GLP-1 medications? And what do we do when we eat without hunger or go beyond “just enough”? Our answer is not shame—it’s curiosity, grace, and a willingness to look and learn with the Lord. We can return to Him in the very next moment, without condemnation, and keep practicing freedom one meal at a time. Grace Changes Everything!

Send us Fan Mail Grace can feel like something meant for everyone else but not for us. If you've ever looked at your eating, your body, or your struggles with self-control and wondered what is wrong with you, we want to begin where Scripture begins—with who God says He is. Together, we explore Exodus 34 and Psalm 103, building a picture of God's mercy, compassion, patience, steadfast love, and forgiveness. When we understand His character, we can bring Him our food struggles, shame, and fears with confidence instead of hiding. We also unpack Titus 2 and discover that grace is more than forgiveness—it teaches us how to live. We talk about the difference between condemnation and the Holy Spirit's loving conviction, why healthy boundaries are an expression of God's kindness, and how simple practices like praise and thanksgiving can renew our minds and help us move forward one choice at a time. If you've felt stuck or distant from God, this conversation offers hope that His grace is still at work in you. If this brings relief, subscribe, share the episode with a friend who needs grace today, and leave a review so more listeners can find faith-based freedom with food and body image. Loud Longings, Part 9: Abiding in His Presence

Send us Fan Mail In this final episode of our Loud Longings, Holy God series, we bring everything back to the truth we've been discovering together: our deepest longings were always meant to lead us to Jesus. We talk about why cravings, emotional eating, scrolling, shopping, striving, and the search for approval aren't random—they often reveal a deeper desire for lasting comfort, peace, and connection with God. Reflecting on Psalm 73, we explore how even the best things in life can never fully satisfy, while God alone becomes the portion that never fades. We also look at Jesus' invitation throughout the Gospels and His prayer in John 17, where eternal life is described as knowing God personally. For those who struggle to sense God's nearness, we offer practical encouragement for renewing your mind with truth and cultivating awareness of His presence throughout the day. We close the series with a simple practice: pause and ask, "Lord, where are You right now?" Our prayer is that this conversation helps you move beyond temporary comforts and discover the lasting hope, peace, and relationship that can only be found by abiding in Christ. If you are ready to trade counterfeit comforts for real comfort, press play, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more people can find it. Loud Longings, Part 8: Abiding in God's Comfort

Send us Fan Mail In part 8 of our Loud Longings, Holy God series, we explore the difference between chasing quick relief and receiving the lasting comfort God offers. Together, we talk about why we often reach for food, scrolling, overspending, busyness, or other coping mechanisms when life feels overwhelming, and why those cravings may actually be pointing to deeper needs. Looking at 2 Corinthians 1, Psalm 23, and Matthew 11, we're reminded that God doesn't ask us to stop needing comfort—He invites us to find it in His presence. We also reflect on Elijah's exhaustion, the assurance of being fully known in Psalm 139, and the Holy Spirit's role as our Comforter and Helper. Rather than offering instant escape, God meets us with His presence, peace, and strength in the middle of our struggles. We share practical ways to receive His comfort through prayer, Scripture, worship, trusted community, and renewing our minds with the simple question, "Lord, what is true right now?" If you're weary from trying to numb the ache, we hope this conversation encourages you to abide in the comfort only God can provide. Loud Longings, Part 7: True Comfort For Real Longings

Send us Fan Mail In this seventh episode in our Loud Longings, Holy God series, we explore why our search for comfort is a universal part of being human and why longing is not a sign that something is wrong with us. Together, we talk about how shame can lead us to hide our desires instead of bringing them honestly to God. Looking at Jeremiah 2 and the image of broken cisterns, we consider how food, emotional eating, social media, busyness, achievement, people-pleasing, control, and even ministry can become places we turn for relief instead of lasting comfort. We also reflect on Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman in John 4 and the reminder from Hebrews that He understands our weakness. Rather than condemning our thirst, Jesus invites us to bring it to Him. We share a simple practice for moments when the urge to seek comfort arises: pause, ask what you're truly feeling and what you're hoping that comfort will provide, then turn that longing into a conversation with God. If you've ever found yourself reaching for temporary relief, we hope this episode encourages you to discover the lasting comfort found in abiding with Christ. Loud Longings, Part 6: Learning to Abide

Send us Fan Mail In this sixth episode of our Loud Longings, Holy God series, we explore what it means to stay with Jesus when cravings, difficult emotions, or overwhelming situations make us want to escape. Beginning with a simple breath prayer and Jesus' invitation in John 15 to "abide in Me," we talk about how urges often feel urgent and permanent, even though they rise and fall like waves. Together, we consider how remaining present with God instead of reacting immediately can help us experience His peace in the middle of the struggle. We also discuss the difference between relying on willpower and abiding in relationship with Christ. Looking at the disciples in the storm, we're reminded that Jesus' presence doesn't always remove the storm, but it does change how we walk through it. We close with a simple practice for moments of temptation: pause, take a slow breath, notice what's happening in your body, and pray, "Jesus, I'm staying." If you've ever felt trapped by the need for immediate relief, we hope this conversation encourages you to remain with the One who is already with you. Loud Longings, Part 5: When Surrender Feels Scary

Send us Fan Mail In this fifth episode of our Loud Longings, Holy God series, we talk honestly about why surrender can feel so difficult, especially when we're letting go of the very things we've relied on for comfort. We begin with a breath prayer from Psalm 73—“You are the strength of my heart... and my portion forever”—and explore how stress, grief, and uncertainty can drive us toward emotional eating, control, perfectionism, busyness, scrolling, or other attempts to find quick relief. Together, we discuss why surrender often involves loss and why acknowledging that grief is an important part of the journey. Looking at Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, we see that surrender isn't about pretending everything is fine—it's about bringing our deepest struggles into relationship with the Father. We encourage listeners to choose connection with Jesus before reaching for immediate relief and share a simple practice to help pause and respond differently when urges arise. If surrender has ever felt overwhelming, we hope this conversation reminds you that you don't have to walk that path alone. Loud Longings, Part 4: What Are You Trusting for Comfort?

Send us Fan Mail In this fourth episode of our Loud Longings, Holy God series, we explore what happens when our hearts attach to things other than God for comfort, security, and relief. We share a simple breath prayer—“You alone” on the inhale, “are my portion” on the exhale—and reflect on Psalm 16 as we consider where we turn when life feels overwhelming, lonely, or exhausting. Together, we talk about how food, scrolling, spending, productivity, and control can begin to function as little saviors, not because we're weak, but because we were created for connection and our hearts naturally attach to something. Drawing from Exodus 20 and John 15, we discuss how God's invitation is not about behavior management but about abiding in Christ and finding lasting refuge in Him. We explore the difference between chasing quick relief and resting in God's presence, and we offer a simple question to bring into moments of stress or temptation: “Lord, what am I trusting right now?” If you've found yourself reaching for lesser comforts, this conversation is an invitation to slow down, notice where your hope is settling, and rediscover Jesus as your true source of peace and stability.
