Season 3 Prologue: Bodies of Resistance: Feminist Art, Memory, and Refusal
Season 3 of Regenerative Artivism moves from the Greater China region to Japan and Korea, following the podcast’s concerns into a historical terrain shaped by empire, war, militarization, state violence, disaster memory, and feminist refusal. This prologue introduces the season’s central idea: bodies of resistance. Across the season, the body appears not only as a site of protest, but also as archive, monument, witness, stage, mourner, and public presence. Through fieldwork conducted in Japan and Korea in summer 2026, following earlier research, I trace how artists, activists, scholars, and community organizers create forms through which difficult histories can be remembered, confronted, interrupted, and made public. The season begins with Tomiyama Taeko’s feminist antiwar memory and Shimada Yoshiko’s performance interventions into nationalist space, then moves to Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung’s Statue of Peace, Choi Sung-hee’s daily practice of anti-base peace activism in Gangjeong, siren eun young jung’s work on Dongducheon and resistance theater, and Black Jaguar’s ghosts, feminist rage, and embodied mourning. Together, these figures show that art cannot undo empire, sexual violence, militarization, disaster, or social exclusion. But it can create forms through which people gather around unresolved histories, make violence visible without surrendering to despair, and keep public memory from being absorbed into the convenience of power.
