'Archive X' and the impossible | Reality Check
In this episode of "Reality Check," Ross Coulthart sits down with Jeffrey J. Kripal, the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University and host of the new six-part series "Archive X: Unexplained Phenomena." Kripal oversees Rice's Center for the Impossible, formerly the Archives of the Impossible, a collection that holds the papers of John Mack and Jacques Vallée among more than a million items on telepathy, near-death experience, abduction and precognition. The conversation opens with the nonverbal autistic children of the series' first episode and the place they call the hill. Then, moves to the abduction account of Karin Austin, the artist Andrew Paquette's dreams of disasters that later happened and Kripal's argument that the brain is a receiver of consciousness rather than its producer. Coulthart puts the harder questions to Kripal, including why a nonhuman intelligence would block a witness's memory, whether a future human civilization is behind the encounters and what to make of Christian arguments that the phenomenon is demonic. Kripal's answer runs through all of it, that these experiences cluster around trauma and love, that they have happened for millennia and that the task is to listen before reducing them to any worldview. Mapping the Palomar transient hotspots | Reality Check
In this episode of "Reality Check," Ross Coulthart sits down with astrophysicist Dr. Beatriz Villarroel, founder of the VASCO project at Nordita in Stockholm, and Vanderbilt's Dr. Stephen Bruehl, whose new paper suggests something in near-Earth space was flashing sunlight onto the photographic plates at Palomar Observatory years before Sputnik ever reached orbit. Projected back down to the ground, those flashes don't scatter at random. They cluster over some very familiar places, including the Pacific off Southern Mexico near where the Nimitz Tic-Tac encounter took place in 2004, the southern Gulf of Mexico off Tampico and the American Southwest around Sedona and White Sands Missile Range. The nuclear connection gets even stranger. On the night before Castle Yankee, the 13.5-megaton hydrogen bomb detonated at Bikini Atoll in May 1954, 203 high-probability transients appeared over the Pacific, while the transients tied to Nevada tests fell over Arizona and New Mexico instead. Coulthart plays the debunker for much of the hour, pressing the pair on plate defects, cosmic rays, radioactive fallout, survey bias and whether enough statistical tests will always turn up a hit. They also discuss independent work by former Hubble scientist Ivo Busko, whose plates from a German observatory show the same spike in transients on April 4, 1956, that appears in the Palomar data. Jacques Vallée's final report | Reality Check
In this episode of "Reality Check," Ross Coulthart sits down with Dr. Jacques Vallée, the astrophysicist, computer scientist and venture capitalist whose seven-volume "Forbidden Science" diaries have shaped UAP research for six decades. They discuss the final volume, "Forbidden Science 7." Vallée describes the data warehouse of some 260,000 sightings he built for the Bigelow Aerospace project funded by the Defense Intelligence Agency, why the work was cut off after roughly three years before the analysis he designed could run and the fact he has never been debriefed from his clearance. He walks Ross through his correspondence with a master remote viewer he calls "Gilbert," who describes being taken inside a laboratory built into a mountain and brought face to face with a living nonhuman entity that answered in configurations of light. He also tells Ross that he once came face to face with an entity himself. Vallée says a member in good standing of the National Academy of Sciences told him the academy was warned it could lose funding if it moved into the subject, and after sixty years of investigation, he has concluded that nobody is actually in charge of the phenomenon inside the U.S. government. In 1969, a man drilling a well in the Tallinn suburb of Merivälja struck something solid roughly seven meters down, and the fragments he broke loose eventually reached Soviet laboratories that concluded the alloy could not have been produced on this planet. Sander walks Coulthart through the two decades of excavation that followed, the shafts sunk under the garden, the KGB files stamped top secret and the researchers who reported burns, blackouts and stranger effects the closer they got to whatever sits beneath the upper layer. He also lays out the counterarguments, from the meteorite explanation to the claim this is a forgotten first World War superalloy buried in a hurry, and explains why the physical evidence points in two directions more than a 100,000 years apart.
