    Prologue | The Human Condition

    We're onto our new read, Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition (1958). Host Roger Berkowitz calls the book a meditation on “thinking what we are doing” as modern science transforms the modern world. In this close read of the prologue, he distinguishes the “modern age” (the scientific revolution from the 17th to early 20th century) from the “modern world” inaugurated by the atomic bomb, Sputnik, automation, and today’s AI, and introduces Arendt’s twofold alienation: world alienation (the Cartesian turn inward) and earth alienation (a flight from earthly givenness through scientific and technological mastery). He argues that scholarship overemphasizes labor/work/action while missing the overarching claim that these core human faculties are being threatened by incomprehensible know-how, loss of speech, and automation.     Identity, Embodiment, and Politics with Nikita Nelin '09 | Bonus Episode

    In this bonus episode, host Roger Berkowitz speaks with writer and somatic coach Nikita Nelin '09 about identity, embodiment, and politics. Nelin describes his grandfather, who pursued acting only after being told to “take off the combat boots,” a metaphor for shedding protective armor that later constrains life. Connecting this to his coaching, Nelin contrasts bodily “compression” and exhaustion he saw in clients after the 2024 election with the “armoring up” response of 2016, and argues for permission to seek joy and desire amid political despair. Berkowitz relates this to Arendt’s distinctions between tyranny and totalitarianism, questions of living well under dictatorship, and the need to create and act beyond mere survival. They discuss somatic practice as attention to sensation and learned schemas, Nelin’s shift from writerly ambition to coaching, and Arendt’s idea of beginning anew at any age.     Hannah Arendt's Unwritten Chapter on Judging with Samantha Fazekas | Bonus Episode

    Roger Berkowitz speaks with Samantha Fazekas about her book Hannah Arendt’s Unwritten Chapter on Judging (De Gruyter Brill, 2025). Fazekas argues that judging became central for Arendt as she confronted unprecedented political events like World War II, the Holocaust, and the Eichmann trial, which “explode” inherited moral and political categories. They discuss Arendt’s use of Kant’s aesthetic reflective judgment—subjective yet claiming universal validity—as a model for political judgment, emphasizing enlarged mentality, representative thinking, and public communicability. Judging, they argue, helps build a shared world through debate even without consensus. Fazekas also addresses the spectator–actor relation, and her claim that a “non-privative” privacy is necessary for thinking, judging, and meaningful action. Samantha Fazekas was a teaching fellow for three years in political philosophy at Trinity, and is now a visiting researcher at the University of Marburg, Germany, splitting her time between the United States, Germany and Dublin.     Home to Roost | Responsibility and Judgment

    Host Roger Berkowitz closes our discussion of Hannah Arendt’s Responsibility and Judgment with her final public speech, “Home to Roost” (1975), presented as Arendt’s last assessment of the crisis of the U.S. republic. He highlights her claims that republics are fragile, that McCarthyism began a constitutional crisis by attacking due process and the civil service, and that Vietnam, foreign-policy failures, domestic turmoil, and Watergate signaled a swift decline of political power. Arendt warns against social-scientific “deeper causes” that rationalize events and blunt the shock of facts, arguing that modern PR and political image-making drove both economic “progress” toward waste and Vietnam-era policy. She distinguishes ordinary lying from “lying as a way of life,” rooted in totalitarianism, and argues Nixon showed how criminality flourishes when only terror seems beyond the pale; discussion connects these themes to present polarization, corruption, institutions’ resistance, and the need for public reckoning rather than amnesia.     The Deputy & Auschwitz on Trial | Responsibility and Judgment

    Reflections on Little Rock | Responsibility and Judgment

    There's a shift in Hannah Arendt's Responsibility and Judgment from essays on moral and political responsibility to shorter essays of judgment about particular events, beginning with her controversial 1957 “Reflections on Little Rock.” In this episode of the podcast, host Roger Berkowitz situates the essay in the aftermath of Brown v. Board, and notes Arendt’s factual errors about the Little Rock photos and discourse, and recounts its fraught publication history in Commentary and Dissent, including rebuttals and Arendt’s responses.     America's Constitutional Crossroads with Peter Rosenblum | Bonus Episode

    In this bonus episode of the podcast, host Roger Berkowitz welcomes Peter Rosenblum,  a professor of international law and human rights at Bard College, to discuss their constitutional law course, which is taught as a liberal-arts, critical-thinking class rather than pre-law. Beginning with Aristotle, Montesquieu, the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers, and Arendt, it asks what a constitution is and how it constitutes a people. They explain how the course has shifted with changing student experience and politics: a chronological account through the New Deal followed by thematic units on civil rights, the administrative state (including Chevron and post-Chevron debates), and, most recently, presidential power amid congressional abdication. Discussing cases from Lincoln through Youngstown, Nixon, Hamdi, and Trump v. United States, they emphasize separation of powers over rights-centered narratives, worry about eroded norms and legislative dysfunction, and point to competitive elections and independent redistricting as crucial to rebalancing power.     The Spirit of Philadelphia with Chris Gibson | Bonus Episode

    In this bonus episode, host Roger Berkowitz interviews Chris Gibson, former U.S. Army colonel, Purple Heart recipient, ex–three-term congressman, former Williams College professor and Siena College president, and author of The Spirit of Philadelphia: A Call to Recover the Founding Principles. Gibson explains the “spirit of Philadelphia” as the coalescing energy of collaboration and compromise that emerged at the Constitutional Convention after Sherman’s bicameral compromise, enabling agreement on the executive and an independent judiciary, and he notes Madison was initially slow to embrace it. They discuss Gibson’s “original American social ethos” and his argument for “common sense realism,” rooted in Scottish Enlightenment thinkers like Reid and Hutcheson, as a hybrid of Lockean rights and communitarian obligations. Gibson says the book aims to restore trust, reawaken civic spirit, address a crisis of meaning amid division and alienation, and promote leaders of service while proposing reforms to rebalance executive and congressional power. Mead argues the old transatlantic model rested on Westernization as a global aspiration and on European centrality, both of which have eroded as non-Western powers pursue their own paths and Europe falls behind militarily, politically, and technologically. He contends U.S. influence remains structurally resilient, driven by capitalist innovation, though legitimacy and power are changing amid upheaval.     The Emergency with George Packer | Bonus Episode

    In this bonus episode, Roger Berkowitz welcomes George Packer—National Book Award–winning author of The Unwinding, staff writer for The Atlantic and contributor to The New Yorker—to discuss his 2025 novel The Emergency and his upcoming appearance at The Arendt Forum (October 15–17, 2026), the Hannah Arendt Center's 20th anniversary fall gathering on Solidarity. Packer explains that the pandemic and January 6th, and the rapid collapse of shared “ground truth,” drove him from nonfiction toward a fable-like fiction set in an unnamed empire collapsing from distraction and loss of faith. They discuss the novel’s central father–daughter relationship, youth movements “Together” and “Dirt,” the “suicide spot,” and Packer’s view that both movements express despair and a revolt against humanity. Packer contrasts journalism’s labor with fiction’s imaginative construction, and ends by emphasizing a humbled ethic of care—“opening the door”—rather than policy prescriptions.
