Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Dong Zou from AcroGarden. Dong has a PhD in chemistry and worked for several pharmaceutical companies in various therapeutic areas including anti-inflammatory, cancer, pain management and anti-infectious diseases. He developed his first interest in marine invertebrates when he was working as a post doc at the University of Virginia. He has been in aquarium hobby since he was in college and he got into the saltwater hobby in 2004 after setting up his first marine fish tank for a Nemo and after he discovered the Boston Reefers Society. About 10 years ago, he cofounded his first company on drug discovery. Soon after that, he was able to combine his passion for coral and his experience in the pharmaceutical industry and cofounded a new company, eCove BioMarine. This company focused on aquaculture coral for drug discovery and bone grafting. His current company, AcroGarden Inc, was then founded to hold the intellectual properties and to study coral farming. AcroGarden is now his primary focus. The company produces aqua-cultured coral, mainly SPS, for the hobby.

Hunter is a hobbyist who is also an expert on the captive care of all reef safe wrasses. He is known as "The Wrasse Guy" and you can learn more about this passion of his at thewrasseguy.com. In this episode we talk about wrasses as well as the latest on the situation at Reef2Reef concerning the LGBTQ community. Here is some more background on Hunter. He has a 270g peninsula reef featuring numerous rare wrasses and he has written many articles about these fish. He was a speaker at MACNA 2017, RAP 2019, and a panelist at Mini-Macna 2021. In his local community, Hunter has acted as the club president for AZ FRAG for several years. Additionally, on a national level, he is involved with the Rainbow Reefers. He has been in the marine hobby since 2009 and lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his husband and their Thai Ridgeback dog. For his day job, Hunter is a structures engineer in the aerospace propulsion engine industry. He is currently EVP of US Marketing Strategy for Aquaforest and a consultant at Ozotech Inc.

Mike has also written a lot of articles for many publications and has published two books: The New Marine Aquarium and Ultimate Marine Aquariums. Mike has also been a speaker at many reef keeping conferences in the US and around the world. This past September Mike was named the 2022 MASNA Award recipient.

Bobby has been in the saltwater aquarium hobby since 1978. Being in the hobby for so long has provided him the opportunity to keep just about every type of marine system possible. In addition, Bobby has worked in retail, maintenance and most recently owned & operated "HumbleFish Aquatics" which sold quarantined, conditioned saltwater fish. Around 15 years ago Bobby decided to devote himself to the fish disease & treatment aspect of our hobby, and this is considered his area of expertise. He also owns & operates Humble.Fish & Reef Community, an aquarium forum which is dedicated to helping fellow hobbyists.

Paul, who is 73 years old, has been keeping fish since he was able to speak. His dad had a sea food market so he was around fish all his life….it's in his blood. At 18 he was drafted and spent a year in the jungles of Vietnam and Cambodia as a Sargent where he was awarded two Bronze Stars for Valor. As soon as he returned in 1971, he started up his current reef tank. The glass has been changed three times due to scratches. He has two aquarium related patents and he wrote a book "The Avant-Garde Marine Aquarist". 100% of the profits go to MS research in his wife's name. Paul has been an avid diver since 1971…he has his own boat and equipment. Paul was a construction Electrician in Manhattan for about 48 years.

Among other operations, Barnett runs RVS Fishworld. Barnett is responsible for importing most Filipino, Red Sea and all Madagascar and Papua New Guinea fish. Barnett has spent 39 years building export facilities throughout the world, working hand in hand with fisheries is the Philippines, Eritrea, Madagascar, Belize, Fiji, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Djibouti, Tonga, East Timor, Indonesia, Palau and Papua New Guinea. His goal is to give sustainable livelihoods to folks in coastal communities by educating them on how to collect live ornamental tropical fish in an environmentally safe way through the proper use of monofilament nets. His company, RVS Fishworld, conducts net training programs in most regions of the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Through RVS 4 Star Restoration, they are working to restore degraded reefs throughout the Philippines. RVS Fishworld has brought numerous new species to hobbyists and has expanded the known range of several species through their collection efforts. Barnett was honored when one of the fish they discovered, the exceedingly beautiful magma wrasse, was described as Cirrhilabrus shutmani, after his family name. Barnett also owns Indo Pacific Direct in NY, which imports his fish.
