We walk the official file first — phonolite, columnar jointing, first national monument, four formation theories and the Park Service line that erosion erased the tie-breaker. Then the other posts: Missouri Buttes, Devil’s Postpile, Giant’s Causeway, Fingal’s Cave, Svartifoss, Stuðlagil, Prismas Basálticos, Garni, Cape Stolbchaty. Then the living version of the same cut. 1853: thirty-two people dancing a cotillion on the Discovery Tree stump. Mother of the Forest stripped of sixty tons of bark and rebuilt in London. Mark Twain Tree. General Noble dropped in 1892, shipped in eleven rail cars, stood up as a two-story room at the Chicago World’s Fair, nicknamed the California Hoax. Chris has spent years assembling North American and overseas streetscapes: San Francisco, Brooklyn, Johannesburg, Madrid, Helena, Indianapolis, and more than a hundred other files. Three volumes on demolished buildings in Old World North America. A separate study of lost courthouses. Recently he has been examining asylums and orphan trains as institutions that appear in the same period as the rebuild narratives.
