Holly Dorger, Royal Danish Ballet Principal — On Starting Over in Denmark | Pushing Over the Box

Holly Dorger had won the United States Scottish Highland dancing championship, trained at the School of American Ballet, and had her heart set on New York City Ballet. In January, she was told she wouldn't be accepted. Then the incoming director of the Royal Danish Ballet, a former New York City Ballet principal, said he wanted her in Copenhagen. She was 18, didn't speak Danish, and was about to live alone in a new country. Theresa Ruth Howard, Founder of Memoirs of Blacks in Ballet | Pushing Over the Box

In 2015, around the time Misty Copeland was promoted to principal at American Ballet Theatre, Theresa Ruth Howard wrote an article highlighting the long history of Black ballerinas who came before her: "The Misty-rious Case of the Vanishing Ballerinas of Color: Where Have All the Others Gone?" At the bottom, she asked readers to name every Black ballerina they knew in the comments. The response became the Roll Call — and the seed of what is now Memoirs of Blacks in Ballet. Virginia Lensi quit ballet at eight years old.
