Puerto Rico Open Your Eyes

Puerto Rico Abran los Ojos (Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes) is a bold and thought-provoking podcast dedicated to uncovering the true history of Borikén—the island we now know as Puerto Rico. Through weekly episodes, we seek to awaken consciousness across the Latino community, sparking real conversations that bridge generations and borders.

Our show dives deep into the stories often left untold, exploring how Puerto Rico became an unexpected bridge between two continents and examining the historical, cultural, and political forces that have shaped our identity. We confront the good, the bad, and the ugly—highlighting the beauty of Boricua resilience while also facing the realities of economic bondage and colonial legacy.

At the heart of Puerto Rico Abran los Ojos is a commitment to dialogue. We will meet with voices from across the diaspora—activists, historians, artists, elders, and youth—to discuss Puerto Rico’s path toward true self-governance and freedom. This is not just about history; it’s about envisioning a future where Puerto Ricans, both on the island and in the U.S., are empowered, unified, and heard.

With nearly 9 million Puerto Ricans worldwide, our community is a force. This podcast will also explore Puerto Rico’s deep connections with other nations in the Caribbean and Latin America, including Cuba and the Dominican Republic, celebrating our shared struggles, victories, and cultural ties.

Puerto Rico Abran los Ojos is more than a podcast—it’s a movement. Join the conversation. Be part of the change.

Puerto Rico: Nuestra patria, nuestro futuro

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Who decides Puerto Rico’s future and who answers when our people are left struggling?

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Puerto Rico: Our homeland, our future Who decides Puerto Rico’s future and who answers when our people are left struggling? In this episode of Puerto Rico Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz delivers a passionate reflection on our history, identity, and right to determine our future. From the invasion of 1898 and the imposed transfer of sovereignty to today’s territorial relationship, we examine the distance between American citizenship and equal political participation. We address Vieques, reproductive injustices, economic dependence, shipping restrictions, and the struggle for reliable electricity and water. We also turn the conversation toward Puerto Rico’s own politicians, public agencies, and private contractors. Federal responsibility cannot excuse corruption on the island, and local failures cannot erase Washington’s obligations. When will we vote our conscience instead of automatically defending a party? Why can we stand together after a hurricane, yet struggle to bring that same solidarity into our political decisions? This episode recognizes Puerto Ricans in the diaspora, whether born on the island or elsewhere, whose support helps families through disaster and recovery. Distance does not erase belonging. We also discuss statehood, independence, and the possibility of reunification with Spain through a modern autonomous relationship, emphasizing informed debate, democratic consent, and accountability under any future arrangement. Puerto Rico at the UN: 128 Years, Congressional Power, and the Right to Decide

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! If Puerto Rico’s colonial question was settled in 1953, why does Congress still exercise territorial authority over the island? In this episode of Puerto Rico, Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz examines Washington’s call to end the mandate of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization—and why Cuba’s participation cannot justify dismissing the independent voices of Puerto Rican petitioners. Drawing on his appearance at the United Nations in June 2026, Edwin discusses the different futures advocated before the committee, including independence, statehood, and reunification with Spain. We examine UN General Assembly Resolution 748, the distinction between local self-government and political equality, and three important Supreme Court decisions: Puerto Rico v. Sánchez Valle, Financial Oversight Board v. Aurelius, and United States v. Vaello Madero. These cases address separate legal questions, but they document continuing congressional authority and unequal treatment. PROMESA’s unelected fiscal oversight board further illustrates the limits of Puerto Rico’s control over its own affairs. After 128 years under United States sovereignty, Edwin calls for a binding referendum that includes statehood, independence, and reunification with Spain—with clearly defined terms and the agreements necessary to implement the people’s decision. Reunification would require Spain’s consent and negotiated legal and international arrangements. Does the present relationship provide political equality—or preserve territorial subordination?

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Did you know that after the American invasion of 1898, Protestant missionary organizations divided Puerto Rico into religious territories? Through the Comity Agreement, different denominations coordinated their missionary activities across the island. Federico Degetau y González and Luis Muñoz Rivera Did you know that Puerto Rican representatives challenged racist insults from American government figures more than a century ago? Federico Degetau y González was a lawyer, writer, and former member of Spain’s parliament before becoming Puerto Rico’s first Resident Commissioner. He challenged former Navy Secretary Hilary Herbert’s claim that Puerto Ricans were an inferior race. Luis Muñoz Rivera was a poet, journalist, and leader in Puerto Rico’s autonomous government before becoming Resident Commissioner. In 1916, he answered Joseph Cannon’s offensive remarks on the House floor, defending his homeland’s dignity and Puerto Ricans’ right to self-government. Puerto Rico: ¿Una nación o un Estado soberano?

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Can Puerto Rico be a cultural nation without being an independent country? What was the legal status of Puerto Ricans between the U.S. takeover in 1898 and the collective grant of U.S. citizenship in 1917? Join Edwin Ortiz for a historical explainer separating cultural identity, citizenship, autonomy, and sovereignty. We follow the timeline from Indigenous Borikén through Spanish rule, the autonomous government of 1897–1898, Puerto Rican territorial citizenship, and the citizenship legislation of 1917. We also examine Juan Mari Brás’s renunciation dispute and a distinction often missed in online debates: renouncing U.S. citizenship and claiming a right to remain in Puerto Rico are separate questions. Before the Troops Came: Wall Street’s Stake in Puerto Rico

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Before American soldiers landed in Puerto Rico in 1898, American financial and commercial interests were already there. In this episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz examines the economic side of the invasion: petroleum interests, sugar financing, politically connected bankers, government deposits, and the transition from the Puerto Rican peso to American currency. Drawing on historian Dr. Nieve de los Ángeles Vázquez’s interview on La Voz del Centro and additional historical records, we explore what Puerto Rico’s economy already possessed under Spanish sovereignty—and who gained influence over its future after occupation. We also examine the relationship between credit and property, the role of Banco Español de Puerto Rico, and the professor’s argument that public borrowing became increasingly important under the new government. Military strategy belongs in this history. So do the businesses and financial networks that benefited from the transformation. The troops arrived in 1898. American business interests had arrived earlier. Read the accompanying article on Substack, explore our other episodes, and share your thoughts. Governor Jenniffer González Colón signed a resolution formally requesting Puerto Rico’s admission as a state

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Governor Jenniffer González Colón signed a resolution formally requesting Puerto Rico’s admission as a state but what does that signature actually accomplish? In this episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz examines the resolution’s practical limits, the documented 2020 statehood petition, and the difference between advancing a party’s platform and establishing broad public consent. We explore Puerto Rico’s 2024 plebiscite figures, compare them with Alaska and Hawaii’s statehood votes, and revisit federal lawmakers’ concerns about political division.

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Washington Questions Spain While Indigenous Nations Still Wait for Justice at Home

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Broken Promises: Washington Questions Spain While Indigenous Nations Still Wait for Justice at Home In this episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz, President of The National Puerto Rico & Spain Initiative, examines the contrast between U.S. congressional language concerning Spain’s autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla and America’s unresolved responsibilities toward Indigenous nations at home. Drawing on court decisions, government oversight reports, and Indigenous voting-rights research, this episode explores the taking of treaty-protected Sioux lands, inadequate access to safe water, the Navajo Nation’s water dispute, barriers facing Native voters, and healthcare staffing shortages. Following our episode on Mexico, Spain, and Indigenous rights in Latin America, we ask the same question of Washington: Are the principles invoked abroad being upheld at home? Listen, share, and join the conversation. Justice loses its credibility when it is applied selectively. During Hispanic Heritage Month, Edwin Ortiz, President of The National Puerto Rico & Spain Initiative, examines a troubling contradiction: Mexican leaders have demanded that Spain acknowledge historical abuses while Indigenous communities in Mexico continue to face documented discrimination, inadequate protection of ancestral lands, and limited political representation. This episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes also explores Indigenous hardships in Guatemala, Ecuador, Chile, and Peru, drawing on United Nations findings. Historical accountability matters. So does protecting Indigenous rights today. Listen, share, and join the conversation. A government’s commitment to Indigenous dignity must be measured by how it treats living Indigenous people, as well as by what it says about their ancestors. CÓMO LOS CÓRSICOS SE CONVIRTIERON EN PUERTORRIQUEÑOS?

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! HOW DID THE CORSICANS BECOME PUERTO RICAN?

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! HOW DID THE CORSICANS BECOME PUERTO RICAN? What connects a small Mediterranean island with the coffee-growing mountains of Puerto Rico? During the nineteenth century, Corsican immigrants crossed the Atlantic seeking opportunity and a new future. Many established themselves in Yauco, Ponce, Guayanilla, Adjuntas, Lares, Utuado, and other communities. Their presence became so influential that Yauco acquired the nickname “El Pueblo de los Corsos”—the Town of the Corsicans. But this episode goes beyond coffee and migration. Under Spain’s Real Cédula de Gracias of 1815, qualifying European foreigners could establish legal domicile in Puerto Rico. After completing the required residence and other conditions—including allegiance to the Spanish Crown—they could apply for naturalization as Spanish subjects. They did not have to relocate to the Spanish Peninsula. The residence and naturalization process occurred while they lived in Puerto Rico. That raises an important question: If a foreigner could become a Spanish subject through residence in Puerto Rico, what does that reveal about the Spanish legal identity of Puerto Ricans who were already living there? We also examine the racial controversy surrounding the decree. White settlers received preferential incentives, while free Black and pardo colonists were admitted under unequal conditions. At the same time, the agricultural economy encouraged the arrival of additional enslaved Africans. Leave your thoughts in the comments, share this episode, and subscribe for more programs examining the history Puerto Ricans were rarely taught. SOCIALISMO, CAPITALISMO Y COMUNISMO: LO QUE LOS PUERTORRIQUEÑOS DEBEMOS SABER

Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta!
