Ennen kuolemaansa, Irina oli käynyt tekemässä koulullaan kokeen, tallettanut shekkejä ja lahjoittanut hyväntekeväisyyteen useita kasseja tavaroitaan. Catawba joella oli tuona päivänä useita rakennusmiehiä sekä kaksi kalastajaa. Heistä kukaan ei ollut kuullut Irinan huutavan apua, eivät edes nämä kalastajat, jotka olivat olleet alle 100 metrin päässä tapahtumapaikasta.
