Why we can't get things done: Overcome Overcommitting 3/3

There are times we look back and think that we could have done more than what we did and we could have done it better, too. Then we realize that we weren't able to reliably tell whether or not we would get it to the finish line. I see PLENTY of teams trying to get it all done either by self-imposed pressure or pressure put on them by others. I hope that you find this helpful as we round out this series where we identified the major areas that keep us from getting stuff done. This is part 3 of 3 on this series. I hope you enjoy this as we wrap it up and move onto something more fun and hopefully less painful....

Why can't we get things done Part 2

So the whole world is going to fall apart if we don't handle this emergent or urgent work! At least, that is what they say. What actually happens is something completely different. For the scrum team, we already have one WIP Limit in place. That is what we believe it will take to reach the Sprint Goal and we establish that during Sprint Planning. For the Kanban team, we limit our WIP and classify the type of work we usually have. So this episode is not so much about handling the hijacker, but how to handle the hijack. Listen, share, tell a friend. Thanks for all the love you are sending me! scott@planetproductowner.org

    The same 3 questions...UGH!

Let's talk about those dang old same 3 questions we ask in the daily standup and why they hold you back. The Daily sync is sunk, the standup is everyone sitting down, the daily scrum is daily scum. We have to get away from this pattern and have better engagement. If you are a product owner, scrum master, agile dev team member who seems to be NOT getting value out of your daily scrum, sync, standup; whatever you call it - you have to listen to this old school ScottyG episode. It's a difficult conversation, but that's how we grow! scott@planetproductowner.org

What's the plan for the PI?

What you are bringing into PI or quarterly planning is the input needed for you and the team to make your commitments. How you qualify that input is a critical step that lots of teams miss. I'm not talking definition of ready on a micro-level in this episode, but I am talking about the macro-level on making sure you have a smoother large-room planning event. Tune in for ScottyG's 3 keys to pre-planning for your next interval! scott@planetproductowner.org

    Keep the team together

I see the need to help you defend against all kinds of hijackers. Today's episode we will walk through how to keep the hijackers away from your team because hey, we need a stable agile team and we are doing just fine without you coming in and splitting us up. In fact, we don't even want your help adding new people unless we ask you to do it! I see this alot, in a scaled agile world particularly. How can you defend the team, save them from the forces that may want to come in a break them up? Let's dive into 3 things I think will help you keep that high-performing team, improve the functioning of the team and show folks that yeah - take a hike! scott@planetproductowner.org

    Stop Prioritizing - Start Sequencing

I see teams struggle with the flow of value because they are either bogged down in the stories and tasks or they don't have a candle in the dark room. Hey Product Owner, you have to light that candle and show them the way. If prioritization seems like a never-ending battle or even worse you are prioritizing the wrong backlog - yes - you know the one...Then this episode is for you! This episode is great for product owners, new and old. But not just for you! Agile leaders, scrum masters, dev teams and project managers could probably steal some things from this one. Kickin it old school on this one! www.planetproductowner.org is being updated. The tests are over. Coming soon!!

How to get into YOUR Backlog

Often times Product Owners and Agile Dev Teams get confused on who owns what when it comes to the product backlog and the sprint backlog. I want to help you figure that part out, but I also want to share some practical ways that you, as a product person, can grow your practice and work in the right backlog. Maybe you are not sure about how much detail to put into this story, or maybe you are not confident enough to walk away from it and just take your hands off the Sprint Backlog. Remember, that is owned by the dev team. Let's journey! scott@planetproductowner.org

    Secrets of Surviving Scaling

Sometimes surviving agile at scale feels like a never-ending cycle of defeat. There are ways to get through it and there’s light at the end of the tunnel. It doesn’t always have to be a train wreck. Some agile coaches believe that scaling agile is not even agile but there are tons of frameworks that help address the issues. If there’s one thing that SAFe, LeSS, etc. have in common, it is to address one area of your scaled framework that is often the culprit for so much confusion. This episode will address a few things to help you with that journey. This episode would be good for leaders, project managers, product, owners, scrum, masters, and agile teams.

    Bye Bye Backlog Hijacker

One thing lots of agile or scrum teams have in common is that they experience carry over work. Sometimes, we can do it and still survive and meet our goals. But if carry over work becomes the norm and we are unable to get out of the trend, it is problematic for us. There are several different culprits that lead to carry over work, but none is worse than the backlog hijacker. This episode is great for agile leaders, scrum masters, dev teams, software managers and of course the Product Owner! We'll explore some ways to diagnose and triage this problem we have and learn how to say bye bye to our backlog hijacker! Thank you all for your continued support and sharing the podcast! I love being your Practical Agile Coach!

Full cycle of the sprint backlog

It’s the final round folks! This episode will help the product owner and the Dev team put all three parts of the sprint backlog together in the full cycle! How exciting! How do we know what a product backlog item looks like and how do we know if we’re giving the team the right information to have the right conversations?
