Episode #200: Sinister 2 (2015)
Cargill is back! And instead of covering something like freakin' Megaforce, we decided to have a long talk about the much-derided (but perhaps slightly overhated) Sinister 2, a movie he wrote alongside his frequent collaborator Scott Derrickson. And yep, this is a super-sized conversation. Big thanks to Cargill for this great chat, and my perpetual appreciation to all patrons and listeners. Crimewave (Episode #199)
At first glance you'd think "ew, what's that?" but then someone told you who the writers / director were and your brain said "whaaaaat?" Big thanks to my guest Paul Rosen of Piecing It Together podcast for picking this truly insane mash-up of noir, farce, and insane physics. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. Episode #198: Red Sonja (1985)
If you grew up loving Conan the Barbarian (1982) you probably also had some room in your heart for Conan the Destroyer (1984) and Red Sonja (1985). And if not, that's OK. For this episode I found a big Sonja supporter in my old friend Ashley Lynch. Big thanks to Ashley for picking this one, and my love to Effin Birds and every single patron / listener! Hackers (Episode #196)
It's got its fair share of fans these days, but that was not the case back in 1995. Join me and my excellent first-time guest Simon Underwood as we discuss this kitschy curiosity that somehow stood the test of time. Sort of. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. Hot to Trot (1988) (Episode #195)
The fifth and final film in our Dabney Coleman tribute is a wildly silly comedy about a talking horse who gives out good stock tips. Yes, really. Big thanks to this week's returning guest, friend and sponsor Aaron Reynolds, aka the Effin Birds man. He likes this movie! Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. The Man with One Red Shoe (1985) (Episode 194)
Our Dabney Coleman tribute continues with a virtually forgotten Tom Hanks spy farce that has one truly impressive ensemble cast. Big thanks to Cecil Trachenberg of Good Bad Flicks for choosing this one. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. Episode #193: Cloak & Dagger (1984)
Yes, I know it's a beloved movie, but it bombed at the box office and it was generally overlooked for ages, so we've decided to include the film in the Dabney Coleman tribute. And by we I mean me and frequent guest, podcast producer, and film critic Erik Childress, who loves this movie a whole lot. (More than The Karate Kid!?) Episode #192: Short Time (1990)
Our month-long tribute to Dabney Coleman continues, this time with a great little movie about a cop who thinks he's dying (but isn't) and then tries to get killed in the line of duty. Yes, really. And you won't believe the car chase in this movie. Big thanks to the wonderful Brian J. Salisbury of Junkfood Cinema for co-hosting this one. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. For movie #1 of our month-long Dabney Coleman tribute I am joined by film critic Jared McMillan (of freshfiction.tv) to discuss the virtually forgotten movie version of The Beverly Hillbillies. Episode #190: Point Break (2015)
No. not the super cool original with Keanu and the late., great Swayze; the remake! Yes, my friend (and astute film genius) Vince Mancini actually likes this remake. Listen in for why! Episode #189: Vibes (1988)
Returning guest Laurel Vail is queen of the weird '80s rom-coms. Last year she did an episode on Who's That Girl? and now she's backm to discuss Vibes. Yes, that weird '80s rom-com that stars Jeff Goldblum, Cyndi Lauper, and the legendary Peter Falk. We had a fun chat. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. Episode #188: Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992)
Leave it to a guy who co-hosts a podcast called Puppet Masters / Castle Freaks to defend the oft-dismissed second Hellraiser sequel! Big thanks to returning guest Jarrod Hornbeck for choosing a colorful horror flick to dissect. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. Episode #187: Men at Work (1990)
The only thing I remember about Men at Work is that critics hated it. That's all I recall! But thankfully, returning guest and podcast producer (and film critic) Jim Laczkowski selected this Estevez Bros. comedy... that's actually kinda fun. Episode #185: Power (1986)
Richard Gere, Gene Hackman, and Denzel Washington? In a Sidney Lumet film? How could a movie like this be all but forgotten these days? I dig into it with filmmaker Rodney Ascher (back for his third episode) in this lengthy and very nerdy conversation full of digressions and Lumet sidebars. Episode #184: Showgirls (1995)
It's one of the most savagely derided films of the entire 1990s -- a decade that had no shortage of bad films -- but Showgirls has undergone something of a metamorphosis over the past few decades, despite still being full-bore trashy campy pulp. Join me and my guest, author / podcaster / film critic Kristen Lopez (of The Wrap), as we discuss all sorts of stuff related to the infamous disaster. Episode #183: The Black Cauldron (1985)
It's Disney animation's most infamous box office failure, and my old friend Brian Salisbury (of Junkfood Cinema infamy) has a whole lot to rant about, and in rather profane fashion I might add. (warning: F bombs!) Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. Episode #182: Mac and Me (1988)
It's one of the most frequently ridiculed movies of all time, but of course I found someone to defend it! That's what this podcast does! Big thanks to my guest Dottie D. (@DottieDinoRAWR) for sparking a lively conversation on this infamous piece of 1980s weirdness. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk. Episode #181: Cats (2019)
Every once in a while we get a movie that virtually everyone enjoys trashing. And of course there are always a few sincere defenders, like my old friend, filmmaker, and frequent Overhated guest Laurel Vail! (aka @laurelvail) Big thanks to LV for forcing me to finally sit down with this insane film, plus we got a really fun conversation out of the whole deal. Episode #180: The Out-of-Towners (1999)
It seemed like a perfect pitch: Steve Martin covering similar ground to his hit Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and pair him up with the hilarious Goldie Hawn, with whom Martin struck some gold in Housesitter a few years earlier. So what happened? We talk to regular guest Andrew Carden (@awardsconnect) for some answers. Check out the list of episodes here: bit.ly/3WZiLFk.
