    314. Karen Taylor on Turning an Expensive Side Hustle Into a Real Business

Karen Taylor knew why she wanted to build her business. What she didn’t have was the structure to turn that purpose into something real. She had taken the courses, joined the communities, and gathered plenty of information. But she still felt stuck—and wondered whether she had waited too long to make it work. In this conversation, Karen shares how she went from feeling like she had an “expensive side hustle” to building a business with a financial target, a roadmap, a paid first step, and an offer designed around how she actually wants to work. We talk about the identity shift that came from making a major investment in herself, why she turned what she was giving away for free on discovery calls into a paid Lead Product™, and what she had to stop doing before she could focus on the activities that would actually move her business forward. Karen Taylor is a former Fortune 50 leader and now a Capacity Architect. Through Millionaire Nervous System, she helps overachieving women build the internal capacity to hold more visibility, pressure, and success without shrinking, spiraling, or pulling back. Karen’s transformation is such a great example of what can happen when you stop collecting more information, commit to a system, and start building your business around the way you actually want to work. 313. Beverly Cornell on Ditching the “Shoulds” and Finding Your Magic

Beverly Cornell started her business because she wanted freedom. Instead, she eventually found herself overworked, saying yes to everything, and letting her clients design the business for her. In this conversation, Beverly shares the journey from that version of her business to the one she has today. One that is built around her strengths, her personality, her visibility, and a whole lot more intention. We talk about what it means to stop carrying around everyone else’s “shoulds,” become more comfortable being seen, and build profitable systems before building a team. Beverly Cornell has been in the marketing, advertising and branding space for over 30 years helping hundreds of business owners grow their brands. Today, she helps other female consultants, coaches, and creatives navigate overwhelm, reclaim their brand magic, and build businesses that truly fit their lives. Beverly's transformation is such a great example of what can happen when you stop trying to build the business you think you're supposed to have and start building the one that's actually right for you. Tune into this episode to hear: How Beverly went from “accidental entrepreneur” to building a business she actually loves Why your clients can end up designing your business if you don't set boundaries The mindset shift that helped Beverly become more visible and unapologetically herself How Beverly built profitable processes before bringing in a team Why systems are the key to creating more freedom Learn more about Beverly Cornell: Wickedly Branded Connect on LinkedIn Sign Up for Beverly’s Newsletter Marketing, Magic & the Messy Middle Podcast Resources: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ The 7 Steps to $30k Months Playbook: nobsmastery.com/playbook

    312. The Business Model for More Money, More Calm, More Life (The Future is Focus Series)

All summer, I’ve been talking about one idea: that simplicity and focus are not optional. Simplicity and focus are the harder, but better, choice and the fastest path to a profitable, sustainable expert business. And they only get more relevant as your business grows. If you want a business where you are not constantly feeling behind and overwhelmed, and where your success isn’t just in your bottom line, but how you live your life, you have to be able to do three things. You have to attract the right people, sell without it being a drawn-out process, and deliver in a way that is actually profitable. The No BS Business Model gives you that one clear strategy for each of these. The No BS model came from Steve and I doing everything for everyone and ending up overworked and in debt, then paring down our business to just two offers, on one platform, with a clear audience. Our simplification was born out of necessity, but it gave me incredible relief and the success I had been chasing. And now I’ve taught that model to thousands of expert service business owners over the last ten years. Today, I’m going to walk you through it. 311. You're Solving the Wrong Problem. (The Future is Focus Series)

We live in a world with more business advice than ever before. Books, podcasts, courses, newsletters, social media. There's no shortage of information! So why do so many smart business owners still feel stuck? In this episode, I argue that the problem usually isn't a lack of information. It's that we're often solving the wrong problem. We all filter advice through our own experiences, insecurities, and assumptions, which can lead us to focus on things that feel productive but don't actually move the business forward. I share stories from my own business (including a very expensive lesson I learned from reading The E-Myth through the wrong lens), examples from coaching clients, and what I believe IS the missing ingredient (hint: it’s not another course or another book). Sponsored by Squarespace: Free Guide to Squarespace Circle: nobsmastery.com/squarespace Tune into this episode to hear: Why more information isn't the solution to feeling stuck. How our own assumptions filter the advice we consume. Why entrepreneurs so often end up solving the wrong problem. How outside perspective helps you identify the work that will truly move your business forward. Why community and coaching create breakthroughs that information alone can't. 310. Why Your Next Client Isn't Coming From Your Content (The Future is Focus Series)

We hear so much about content marketing these days that it's easy to believe it's the only path to growing an expert business. But every time I ask a room full of business owners where their clients actually come from, the answer is almost always the same: referrals and personal connections. I believe we've become too focused on creating content and not focused enough on building relationships. Don't get me wrong. I love content. It's been a huge part of growing my business. But content takes time to compound, and most experts need clients long before that happens. In this episode, I explain why personal connection is still the fastest, most reliable way to build a healthy pipeline, why clear positioning makes referrals dramatically easier, and the simple outreach practice I teach that helps people consistently stay top of mind without feeling salesy or spending all day networking. If you've been wondering why your marketing isn't producing the results you want, this episode might change what you focus on next. Sponsored by Squarespace: Free Guide to Squarespace Circle: nobsmastery.com/squarespace Tune into this episode to hear: Why referrals are still the biggest source of clients for most expert businesses The biggest mistake people make when they rely too heavily on content marketing How clearer messaging leads to more referrals and a stronger pipeline My 1KO (One Killer Outreach) strategy for building relationships that generate business What is more valuable in an AI-powered world Mentioned: Free Relationship Opportunities Spreadsheet: nobslinks.com/connections Resources: Free Relationship Opportunities Spreadsheet: nobslinks.com/connections Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/

    308. This WILL Grow Your Business (The Future is Focus Series)

The experts I know who are the most profitable, the most referable, and the most confident in their work have all done this. They picked a focus, they got really good at it, and they stuck with it long enough for it to compound and build a reputation on it. That’s it. That’s the secret sauce. Today I want to talk about what that actually looks like in practice by sharing an example from my own business that will make this click in a way that all the theory in the world never quite does. 307. What's More Important Than Gaining Clarity (The Future is Focus Series)

“I just want to get it right the first time.” I cannot tell you how many times someone has reached out to me for branding services when they don’t even have a business yet. They don’t want to make mistakes. They want everything to be perfect right out of the gate. And, yeah, don’t we all? It’s hard and scary to put something out there that you don’t feel is finished or tested. It can feel like setting yourself up for failure, and most humans are always trying very hard to avoid failure. As we’re talking about focus this summer, I’m hearing a version of it from people all the time. They don’t feel clear enough yet to know where to focus. They want to nail their messaging, their offer, their one-liner before they ever put it out there. And of course, there is work you can and should do up front. But it’s not going to be perfect. The only way to actually perfect your message, your offer, your one-liner so that it resonates with your ideal clients is to get out there and say it to a lot of real people. Today I want to talk about the clarity that comes from taking action before you feel ready. Sponsored by Squarespace: Free Guide to Squarespace Circle: nobsmastery.com/squarespace Tune into this episode to hear: Why clarity requires getting out of your head and connecting with other people Why there is no such thing as getting it right once and forever How real-world data about your business can surprise you Why you need real clients to work with when you’re designing your process How spinning your wheels chasing perfection literally costs you money Resources: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/

    306. A Successful Business Is a Boring Business (The Future is Focus Series)

Successful business owners have to do the same things over and over, tweaking and refining as they go, until they have a clear, repeatable process that works. Issue is most entrepreneurs aren’t really wired to do the same things over and over again. We tend to be novelty seekers and risk takers, people who chase ideas and get inspired by new possibilities. So if you find yourself jumping from idea to idea before anything really has a chance to stick and start working, you’re not alone and you can stop beating yourself up over it. But you do need to get yourself out of that mode if you want your business to succeed for the long term. Today, I want to talk about how you get better at catching yourself chasing new, shiny ideas before it derails your progress. Sponsored by Squarespace: Free Guide to Squarespace Circle: nobsmastery.com/squarespace Tune into this episode to hear: Why entrepreneurs are naturally wired for starting things and why building a successful business requires an entirely different skill set. 305. The Fastest Way to Make More Money (The Future is Focus Series)

Everybody wants more ease and less overwhelm in their business. So why do so many of us end up creating businesses that are exhausting to run? In this episode, I'm kicking off a special summer series (“The Future is Focus) by sharing one of the biggest lessons I've learned in 15 years of entrepreneurship: the path to more profit, freedom, and clarity isn't doing more — it's simplifying. I share how I went from running an increasingly complicated business to stripping everything down and discovering that saying no to most opportunities actually created more growth, less stress, and a whole lot more ease. If you've got a never-ending to-do list, too many ideas, or feel busy all the time without making the progress you want, this episode is for you. 304. Kris Byers on Leading Bigger Clients Without Losing Your Boundaries

I’m delighted to have today’s guest back on the podcast. When we last heard from Kris Byers, he told us about the incredible turnaround and evolution of his business since implementing the No BS Model. In eighteen months, he went from scared of investing in joining the program to quadrupling his income – with a third of the clients! I wanted to check back in with Kris because since that episode, he’s won awards, bagged some really big clients, and run incredible projects. You'll want to hear about how he handled working with bigger companies and more decision makers while still getting rid of the BS. And he’ll explain why he’s shifting his focus back to small businesses, even though he now knows how to successfully manage the big guys. Kris Byers is the founder of Horrible Brands, where he helps purpose-driven business owners create personal brands to show up with clarity and confidence, and create real world impact. Tune into this episode to hear: How Kris tweaked the No BS Model to accommodate bigger projects and longer timeframes without losing the guardrails How to successfully deputize a decision-maker to be the leader of their group Why the LP is even more essential when you’re juggling multiple stakeholders How bigger project price tags can make you lose sight of your boundaries What Kris learned about refining his messaging Learn more about Kris Byers: Horrible Brands: http://horriblebrands.com Kris’s Website: https://www.krisbyers.com Instagram: @horriblebrands Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/krisbyers/ Resources: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/

    303. How My Students Are Building Confidence So Fast

We’ve all been there. You’re sitting across from someone you hope will hire you, there’s the potential for real money, and they ask you to do what they think is just a little bit of work on spec for free. Not to mention they want you to submit a proposal before they commit. You might have said okay and done that work, submitted that proposal, and crossed your fingers. Maybe you booked that client in the end, maybe you didn’t. But you probably didn’t feel great about it either way. This just happened to one of the students in the current No BS Mastery cohort. The difference was that not only did she hold her boundary of not working for free, but she also had a clear way to follow up by sending them the link to her LP. People talk about boundaries like they're a mindset problem. You just have to believe in yourself and you’ll stop doing work for free and charging what you’re worth. But I don’t think that’s really how it works. I think boundaries have a lot more to do with structure. Because when you have the right structure, boundaries are really easy to hold. All this month, I’ve been sharing some of the more unexpected wins coming out of the new No BS Mastery cohort, and today I want to talk about why the No BS Model is making it so much easier for my students to confidently maintain their boundaries and say no to free work and clients who aren’t a good fit. Tune into this episode to hear: How clear processes and structure make it so much easier to maintain your boundaries How the LP process helps you say no to free work without closing the door on the relationship Why it’s so necessary to filter out tire kickers and bad fit clients, even when you’re not fully booked Why just five weeks in, my students have already made incredible strides in their confidence Resources: Watch my TED Talk: When You Bank True Confidence, Anything Is Possible Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/

    300. Emily Wilkins on Niching Down, Burning Out, and Coming Back Smarter

One of my star students, Emily Wilkins, joined me on the show a while back, to talk about how niching down blew up her business in the best way. She’s back today for another candid behind-the-scenes chat about where her business is now after several years of implementing the No BS Model. We’re digging into different ways she’s iterated her offerings within the model, what worked well, what "kind of" worked, and ideas that did not pan out at all. I know you’re going to learn so much from Emily and her journey. Emily Wilkins, Founder and CEO of Marketing Metal, spent the first decade of her career in marketing and sales support roles at job shops, both internally and from the agency side. Noticing their unique challenges when it came to marketing their services, Emily engineered a Radical BS-free process that gets these vital small businesses exactly what they need to reach their goals in just a few days–and empowers them to use it. 299. The Freedom-First Business Model

These past few weeks, I’ve been talking about the pros and cons of different business models that are common for expert-based businesses. I’ve tried lots of different models, so I know firsthand the challenges of trying to make a business work with a model that may or may not fit with your business goals. We’ve gone over running a business with a team and a business selling low-ticket digital products. Today, I’m digging into the final model for expert-based business owners, which I’m obviously a big fan of, the No BS Model. This is for experts who want to sell their services at a premium rate and who are more interested in having freedom and flexibility in their lives than scaling up as much as you possibly can. If you want a business that’s built for freedom, flexibility, and puts you on solid ground to grow in new directions, let’s get into it. Tune into this episode to hear: The core constraints that are the basis of the No BS Model The formula that lets you calculate exactly what to charge for your services How the No BS sales process positions you as an expert advisor Why dedicated time and strategies for marketing is a core piece of the No BS Model What’s amazing about being a solo expert using the No BS Model, and the drawbacks of being solo How the No BS Model lays the foundation for moving to other business models Resources: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/ The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price

    298. The Digital Product Dream vs. Reality (No BS Edition)

In this week's episode of No BS Mastery, I'm pulling back the curtain on the "passive income digital product" dream — the good, the messy, and the stuff nobody warns you about. Because it’s a business model that I hear a lot of people gravitating towards when they’re struggling financially: the one to many model. It might be a digital product or a course, and even though those can be very different to implement, the basic principles and pitfalls are similar. I've sold digital products ranging from $100 to $30,000+. I've done the funnels, the webinars, the ad spend, the course rewrites. I know this world inside and out — and I want you to go into it (if you choose to) with both eyes wide open. Tune into this episode to hear: Why the people who want to hire you are NOT the same people who'll buy your course (I learned this the hard way after thousands of sales and only ONE client crossover) Why there is no such thing as truly set it and forget it passive income Why selling a digital product is not the answer to struggling to make sales for your services What you need to know about profitability, scale, and your audience before you create a digital product Resources: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/ The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price

    297. Think You Need a Team? Listen to This First.

At some point, you look at your workload and think: “I just need help.” Here’s the truth most people won’t tell you: Hiring employees doesn’t automatically give you more freedom or more profit. In fact, if you don’t fully understand the business model you’re stepping into, it can do the exact opposite. No one business model is right for everyone and every business model has its benefits and drawbacks. I’ve seen way too many small business owners dip their toes into a bunch of different business models without really thinking through what it entails or why they’re doing it. Over the years, I’ve run my business following three different business models. So this month, I’m going to break those models down and get really candid about the pros and cons, to help you make an informed choice about a model that fits your business and your goals. In this episode, I discuss the employee model. Tune into this episode to hear: Why feeling like you need help isn’t the same as being ready for employees The systems, processes (and more) that you need before you bring on employees How employees change the kinds of projects you can take on and how scalable your business can be The top three challenges owners face with the employee model Resources: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/ The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price

    296. The First Step I Never Skip (No Matter Who the Client Is)

I talk all the time about the power of using the Lead Product process instead of writing free proposals. But what if someone is ready to hire you right from the get-go, should you skip the LP? Wouldn’t doing the LP slow down the whole process and even put you at risk of losing the client? All this month, I’ve been answering some of the most common questions I got during my recent three-day bootcamp. And this one is a genuine dilemma. Why would you steer someone who’s ready to roll on a big project to the much less expensive lead product? In this episode, I break down why I never, ever skip the Lead Product, no matter who the client is. Tune into this episode to hear: Why even your most qualified, ready-to-buy clients still need a “diagnosis” first The real reason the lead product makes your projects faster, easier, and more profitable How to position this step so it feels like a natural next move—not a frustrating detour And the surprising way saying “not yet” actually builds more trust (not less) Mentioned: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/ Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program Resources: Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price

    295. The Retainer Trap: Why Recurring Revenue Isn’t Freedom

Predictable income. Recurring revenue. Long-term client relationships. These are the reasons why retainer clients seem so appealing. Who wants to start from zero every month when you could have a committed client? But the truth is retainer clients don’t actually provide, let alone ensure, financial stability. They might actually keep you from having the kind of business and freedom you really want. In this episode, I talk about why retainers seem so appealing, and how they’re actually holding you back. Tune into this episode to hear: Why retainers feel like the “safe” option (and why that’s misleading) The hidden reason retainers are almost always less profitable than project work The real danger: what happens when one (or all) of those clients leave How to create predictable income without relying on retainers What to do if you already have retainer clients (don’t panic—no burning bridges required) Resources: Grab the first chapter of my new book Scale Solo: scalesolobook.com Grab a copy of my book: Badass Your Brand - https://www.badassyourbrand.com/ Program: No BS Mastery: https://nobsmastery.com/program Program: No BS Agency Mastery: https://join.nobsmastery.com/agency-mastery No BS Clients Lab: https://nobsclientslab.com/ The Price to Freedom Calculator™ - http://nobsmastery.com/price
