Mother Tongue

Mother Tongue

Mother Tongue is a podcast about modern motherhood - the ambition, the identity shifts, the invisible load, and the quiet recalibrations that happen behind the scenes.

I’m Maryanne. I’m a mum of three, a founder, and someone who has spent most of her adult life building businesses while raising a family, often at the same time, usually a little exhausted, and always learning as I go. This podcast is where I have the conversations I wish I’d heard earlier - the honest ones about work, money, ambition, relationships, burnout, confidence, health, and what it really means to build a life alongside motherhood, not in spite of it.

Each episode features thoughtful, open conversations with founders, creatives, doctors, experts and women navigating big lives in real time. We talk about the things that don’t always make it into neat soundbites - the trade-offs, the doubts, the moments of clarity, and the decisions that quietly change everything.

Mother Tongue isn’t about doing more or getting it perfect. It’s about feeling less alone, better informed, and more grounded in the choices you’re making - whether you’re building a business, raising children, starting again, or simply trying to make sense of the season you’re in.

New episodes weekly.

Skincare, Ageing & Everything In Between with Rosie Osborne

If you’ve ever stood in front of your bathroom cabinet wondering whether you actually need the retinol, the LED mask, the expensive vitamin C AND the latest treatment everyone on Instagram is talking about… this episode is for you. This week, we’re joined by skin specialist Rosie Osborne to cut through some of the VERY noisy world of skincare and aesthetics. We’re talking about what actually works, what might not be worth your money, and whether we’re all guilty of doing a little too much to our faces. From retinol, SPF and medical-grade skincare to Botox, lasers, collagen, skin boosters and all those at-home beauty gadgets we keep being influenced to buy, Rosie gives us her take on where to spend, where to save and the treatments she genuinely rates. We also get into ageing (because apparently we start losing collagen much earlier than any of us wanted to hear ), pigmentation and looking after your skin in the Dubai sun, preventative Botox, and why sometimes the best thing you can do for unhappy skin is… leave it alone. Basically, if you’ve ever Googled “do I actually need this?” immediately before adding another skincare product to your basket, you’re going to want to listen to this one. Consider this your very honest guide to what your skin actually needs. The Perimenopause Conversation Every Woman Needs Before 40 with Kat Lebrasse

Today we're talking about something that, if we're honest, most of us know surprisingly little about... perimenopause. Because if you're anything like me, you've probably blamed feeling exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed or just a bit "off" on everything else. Work. Motherhood. Stress. Lack of sleep. Life. But what if it isn't just that? The more I learn about perimenopause, the more I realise how many women are living through it without even knowing they are. We spend years preparing for puberty, pregnancy and childbirth, yet one of the biggest hormonal transitions we'll ever experience is rarely talked about. Joining me today is entrepreneur and Re.her Dubai founder Kat Lebrasse, who is on a mission to change that. Kat shares her own experience of navigating perimenopause, the symptoms she initially dismissed, and the changes that finally helped her start feeling like herself again. We also dive into HRT, hormones, sleep, brain fog, fitness, longevity, peptides and why community is such an important part of this stage of life. And I think that's what makes today's partnership with M&S feel so relevant. As we talk about hormones, body changes and learning to work with our bodies rather than against them, it feels fitting to partner with the new Body by M&S collection. Designed for real women through every stage of life, it's all about helping us feel comfortable, supported and confident in the body we have today. Whether you're in your 30s, 40s or simply want to better understand what's ahead, this is one of those conversations I genuinely think every woman should hear. Our bodies are constantly evolving. Through pregnancy, motherhood, hormones, changing routines, new seasons of life and everything in between, what feels comfortable and supportive today might not be what worked a few years ago. That's the thinking behind the newly relaunched Body by M&S collection. Designed for real women living real lives, it combines thoughtful innovation with everyday comfort, creating pieces that move with you through every stage of life. Because confidence isn't about changing your body. It's about feeling comfortable in it. When what you're wearing fits well, supports you properly and helps you feel your best, it's one less thing to think about. How to Use AI to Make Work, Life & Motherhood Easier with Shweta Scott

Today we're talking about something I think so many of us know we should be getting better at... AI. Because if you're anything like me, you've probably opened ChatGPT, asked it to write an email or caption, thought, "this is useful"... and then carried on doing almost everything else yourself. But what I'm quickly realising is that AI can do so much more than that. When you're juggling work, family, appointments, emails, meal planning and the million little things constantly taking up space in your head, AI can actually become an extra pair of hands. From managing your inbox and organising your calendar to taking meeting notes, planning meals and even helping run parts of your business, it's about finding ways to make everyday life feel that little bit easier. And I think that's why today's partnership feels so fitting. Today's episode is proudly sponsored by M&S and celebrates the new Body by M&S collection. Because when we're already juggling so much, feeling comfortable and supported in what we wear should be one less thing to think about. The collection has been designed for real women living real lives, helping us feel comfortable, confident and supported through all the different stages our bodies go through. Joining me today is AI expert Shweta Scott, who has worked in tech and AI since 2019 and now helps mums, founders and businesses understand how to make AI genuinely useful in their everyday lives. Shweta shares how she uses AI as a "second brain", the difference between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, the tasks we should probably stop doing manually, and how to get AI to actually understand you rather than constantly giving you generic answers. We also explore the other side of AI: how we keep our creativity and human connection in an increasingly AI-powered world, what happens when we rely on it too much, and what all of this could mean for the way our children learn in the future. So if "learn how to actually use AI" has been sitting on your to-do list for months, this is a really good place to start. Our bodies change so much throughout our lives - through pregnancy, motherhood, hormones, work, exercise and everything in between - but how often do we stop and think about whether what we're wearing underneath our clothes is actually working for the body we have today? The newly relaunched Body by M&S collection has been designed for real women living real lives, combining comfort, innovation and confidence with pieces created to support you through every stage of life. Because feeling good isn't about perfection or changing your body. It's about finding pieces that make you feel comfortable, supported and confident in your own skin, so you can spend less time adjusting what you're wearing and more time focusing on what actually matters. The Realities of Modern Motherhood and Raising Girls with Helly O’Brien

I am so excited for today's conversation because I have a feeling it's one that so many of you are going to relate to. I don't know about you, but I sometimes find myself wondering... when did life become so busy? Between work, the school run, remembering PE kits, replying to emails, making dinner, trying to exercise, seeing friends, spending time with our partners, keeping on top of the house and somehow finding five minutes for ourselves... it can feel like we're constantly switching hats. And whilst I absolutely love this season of life, I also think it's really important that we acknowledge just how much women carry. Today's episode is all about the realities of modern motherhood. The invisible mental load, balancing ambition with family life, raising children, relationships, confidence, identity and, perhaps most importantly, remembering that we're women as well as mums. Today's episode is proudly sponsored by M&S and celebrates the launch of their new Body by M&S collection. I actually think it's a really lovely partnership because it's centred around something we don't talk about enough – the idea that confidence often starts with feeling comfortable. When you feel supported, comfortable and good in yourself, it has a ripple effect on everything else. It changes how you show up at work, how you parent and how you feel every single day. And I think that's such an important conversation to be having. Joining me today is the lovely Helly. Helly is the creator behind My Little Loves and has built an incredible online community by sharing family life exactly as it is – honest, funny, relatable and reassuring. She's a mum to three girls, including two teenagers and a younger daughter, which means she brings such a unique perspective on motherhood and all the different seasons that come with it. I'm really looking forward to chatting about what modern motherhood actually looks like, how we raise confident girls, how we balance ambition with family life, and why it's so important that we don't lose ourselves along the way. Getting Dressed Again: Style, Confidence & Finding Yourself After Kids with Holly Elgeti

Today we're talking about something I know so many mums will relate to... getting dressed again. Not getting dressed in the sense of throwing on whatever's clean before the school run, but genuinely feeling excited to open your wardrobe, putting something on that makes you feel good and reconnecting with the person you are beyond motherhood. Because I think for so many of us, having children changes our relationship with style. We spend years dressing for practicality, comfort and everyone else's needs, and somewhere along the way we stop dressing for ourselves. Our bodies change, our priorities change and often our confidence changes too. Today's episode is proudly sponsored by M&S and celebrates the launch of their new Body by M&S collection. Throughout today's conversation we'll be exploring why confidence often starts with the foundations, how the right fit can completely transform the way we feel, and why getting dressed should never be about changing who we are—it's about feeling comfortable, supported and confident in the body we have today. Joining me today is the wonderful Holly Elgeti. Holly is a personal stylist and content creator who has built an incredibly loyal community by helping women simplify their wardrobes, rediscover their personal style and, perhaps most importantly, feel confident in themselves again. Her approach isn't about following trends or buying an entirely new wardrobe—it's about making fashion feel accessible, wearable and realistic for real women living real lives. Creating Calm: Organising Your Home, Reducing the Mental Load & Making Family Life Easier with Nada Daher

Today's guest is someone whose work I think every parent will relate to. I'm joined by Nada, founder of The Home Order, a professional home organisation company helping families create homes that feel calmer, function better and work with family life, rather than against it. Because let's be honest, most of us aren't striving for Pinterest-perfect pantries. We're simply trying to keep on top of the endless piles of laundry, find the PE kit on a Monday morning, stop buying things we already own and feel like our homes are making life easier instead of adding to the overwhelm. In this episode, we're talking about far more than organising cupboards. We're exploring how our homes impact our mental wellbeing, why organisation is really about reducing the mental load, and the practical systems every family can put in place to make everyday life run more smoothly. The Truth About Healthy Hair: Colour, Extensions & Living in Dubai with Louise Bailey

Hair is one of those topics that seems to come up in every conversation. Whether it's finding a colour that actually suits you, covering greys, deciding whether extensions are worth it, or simply trying to make your hair look a little fuller and healthier, there is so much advice out there that it can be difficult to know what is actually right for you. We want colour that looks natural, extensions that nobody can spot, and routines that fit into real life rather than taking hours every week. Why “Having It All” Still Isn’t Working for Women with Stefanie O’Connell

Today I’m joined by Stefanie O’Connell - an award-winning journalist who writes about money, power and ambition, and the author of The Ambition Penalty. Her work challenges a lot of what we’ve been told as women - that if we just work hard enough, lean in, and push through the imposter syndrome, we’ll get there. But the data tells a very different story. Stefanie looks at the real cost of ambition for women - financially, professionally and personally and why so many women are feeling burnt out, disillusioned, and stuck… despite doing everything “right”. And as a mum herself, she brings such an important lens to what this actually looks like in real life. From Idea to Income: How to Actually Build a Business with Emily Griffiths

Today’s episode is for anyone who has ever had a business idea… and then immediately felt completely overwhelmed by everything that comes next. Because I think the idea is often the easy part - it’s the ‘how do I actually turn this into something real?’ that stops so many people in their tracks. I’m joined by Emily Griffiths, who has built and scaled her own business and really understands what it takes to go from that initial spark of an idea through to actually making it work - the research, the planning, the numbers, and all the bits that people don’t always talk about. In this conversation, we’re breaking it all down in a really honest and practical way - from how to know if your idea is worth pursuing, to what a business plan actually needs to look like, how to think about budgets and P&Ls without feeling intimidated, and how to start something alongside the reality of a busy life. It’s one of those episodes that feels like a bit of a reset if you’ve been sitting on an idea for a while… or if you’re already building something and just want a bit more clarity on what you’re doing. Alcohol-Free Living, Anxiety & Rethinking Social Life with Sophie Rose-Arnold

Today we’re joined by a guest who is opening up a conversation that so many of us are quietly having - but rarely saying out loud. Sophie Rose-Arnold is an alcohol-free advocate who shares a refreshingly honest perspective on what it really looks like to step away from drinking - especially as a woman navigating motherhood, friendships, and everyday life. After nearly two decades of drinking, Sophie made the decision to stop completely - not because she hit a rock bottom, but because alcohol simply stopped working for her. What followed was a journey of unlearning, rebuilding, and redefining what fun, connection, and relaxation actually look like. In this conversation, we talk about the culture around alcohol - from binge drinking in our 20s to the pressure to keep drinking as adults, especially in social settings. We unpack the anxiety, the sleep disruption, the “just one drink” cycle, how motherhood changes everything and why so many women are quietly rethinking their relationship with alcohol. We also talk honestly about what makes it hard to stop - the social pressure, the identity shift, and the fear of being seen as “boring” and what changes when you do. This is not about labels or extremes. It’s about awareness, choice, and understanding what actually makes you feel good. If you’ve ever found yourself questioning your relationship with alcohol even quietly, this episode will resonate. From Korean Skincare to Injectables: What Really Works in the World of Skin with Grainne Sullivan

Today’s guest is someone I’ve been really looking forward to having on the podcast - especially because she brings so much clarity to a space that can feel noisy, confusing, and very trend-led. Travelling With Kids (Without Losing Your Mind)

Travelling with kids isn’t quite the relaxing escape it once was - but it can still be one of the most rewarding, memorable things you do as a family. In this episode, I’m sharing an honest take on what travel really looks like with three children and some of my favourite spots to visit, including the JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa - which struck that rare balance between true luxury and genuine ease with children - and Feuerstein Nature Family Resort, which was quite possibly the most enjoyable holiday the kids have ever had. I also share quick thoughts on other standout family-friendly hotels, including Soneva Fushi, One&Only Le Saint Géran, Banyan Tree Phuket, Wilderness Reserve and The Ritz-Carlton Krabi - each offering something slightly different depending on the kind of trip you’re after. We also touch on what’s next on our travel list this year - from Hong Kong Disneyland and the ease of Ikos Dassia, to slower, design-led stays at Sublime Comporta and the magic of a winter trip to Lapland. This episode is less about perfect itineraries, and more about a shift in mindset - travelling differently, choosing ease where you can, and embracing the chaos (just a little). Because while it might not always feel like a holiday… it’s always worth it. Relocating to Dubai, Slow Living & Raising Kids Overseas with Laura Jones

Today we’re joined by a guest who is quietly redefining what life in Dubai can really look like - and this is a powerful listen for anyone moving here, or wondering if the city is the right fit for their family. Laura Jones is a mum of three and the creator behind Home by Laura Jones, where she shares a slower, more intentional side of life in a city often known for its speed, luxury and excess. After moving to Dubai over a decade ago, Laura made a conscious decision to build a life that stayed true to her values - focused on family, simplicity, gratitude and creating a calm home environment, even in one of the world’s busiest cities. Her version of Dubai isn’t brunches and designer labels. It’s family dinners, slow weekends, growing herbs in the garden, DIY projects, meal planning, and raising kind, grounded girls who understand the value of what they have. In this conversation, we talk about the reality of moving to Dubai as an expat - the emotional first year, living far from family, and how to build community and a sense of home from scratch. Laura’s story is a reminder that Dubai doesn’t have to look the way people think it does. You don’t have to change who you are to live here. If you need a little reassurance that it’s possible to create your own version of home here, this episode is for you. Motherhood, Ambition & Reinventing Your Life with Camilla Rhuda

Today we’re joined by a guest whose journey proves that reinvention doesn’t have to take years - sometimes it starts with one video and the courage to press post. Camilla Rhuda is a Dubai-based content creator who went from working as a teacher and governess to building a rapidly growing social media platform in less than a year. What began as a creative outlet after becoming a mum quickly turned into a career - with viral videos, brand partnerships, and a community drawn to her honesty, humour and refreshingly real take on motherhood and life in Dubai. Before content creation, Camilla’s path wasn’t straightforward. She moved to Dubai in 2017, changed careers more than once, and navigated years of fertility challenges and loss before becoming a mother - an experience that shifted her mindset and gave her the confidence to stop doubting herself and finally pursue what she’d always wanted to do Camilla’s story is honest, funny and deeply relatable - a reminder that you don’t need a perfect plan to start again, and that sometimes the biggest shifts happen when you finally back yourself. This is a conversation about reinvention, motherhood, confidence, and building a life and career on your own terms.
