Melanin Muses Podcast

Scope Networks

The podcast where anime meets psychology, pop culture meets purpose, and Black girl brilliance takes center stage!

MMP is hosted by Cleo & Callie, two women of color with a shared love of nerd culture and deep conversations. Callie’s a Clinical Mental Health Counselor bringing therapeutic insight and emotional depth; Cleo’s the creative strategist adding fire, laughter, and fandom finesse. Together, they blend analysis and authenticity in a space where healing, humor, and hype coexist.

What to Expect:

Thoughtful breakdowns of anime, pop culture, and storytelling

Representation, real talk, and the occasional existential crisis over fictional characters

Big brain energy meets divine sass

At MMP, we don’t just watch anime — we feel it, deconstruct it, and find the lessons hidden in every plot twist.

Pull up a chair, and join the Muses as we explore what it means to be human — one anime episode (and a little bit of chaos) at a time.

Self-Neglect Disguised as Selflessness | Fruits Basket Tohru Honda Character Analysis
When Fruits Basket first aired in 2001, it was cute, funny, and entertaining — but it barely skimmed the surface of the story's real complexity and depth. Despite its beautiful animation and excellent voice acting, it did a disservice to many of its well-rounded characters, most notably Tohru Honda. In the original, Tohru was reduced to an airhead: clumsy, endlessly people-pleasing, and constantly talking about her mother. But the 2019 remake finally gives her the depth she deserves. We see her trauma. We see her grow. We see her learn to stand up for herself and build a life of her own — and that same depth extends to other characters across the series. Join us as we explore Tohru Honda's growth, what we can learn from her, and why Fruits Basket is peak anime rooted in mental health lessons. Trigger Warnings: There are talks of parental neglect, grooming, abuse of a variety of kinds, and trauma. If these are things that are sensitive to you, then please check out our other episodes for a lighter tone. ►CHECK OUT OUR PARTNER! @scopeproductions https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8KjLvvlwzGCVgwXN1JuZMQ ►BECOME A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/cw/MelaninMusesPodcast ►BUY US COFFEE https://ko-fi.com/melaninmusespodcast ►SOCIAL MEDIA ▸Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@melaninmusespodcast ▸Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melaninmusespodcast/ ▸Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/melaninmusespodcast ►CONTACT US melaninmusespodcast@gmail.com ►OTHER FUN THINGS https://linktr.ee/melaninmusespodcast This video falls under the Copyright Act of Canada to create the fair dealing exception to copyright.
