We launch with the unmistakable power of Mark Farner and Grand Funk Railroad, before turning the controls over to Jimi Hendrix and the extraordinary “Bold as Love.” Where do you go after Hendrix? How about Neil Young? We'll dig into Zuma for “Barstool Blues” and then stretch out with one of Neil's monumental creations—the haunting, sprawling “Cortez the Killer.” From there, the signal takes us into the unmistakable sound of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, followed by Sheryl Crow kicking things into gear with “Steve McQueen.” Then we turn it loose. Led Zeppelin — “Dancing Days.” Page. Plant. Jones. Bonham. Enough said. Next comes the great Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy for a couple of cuts before we bring that stretch home with the unmistakable voice of Justin Hayward and The Moody Blues. Then we change frequencies. Steely Dan takes us back to Can't Buy a Thrill, followed by Adam Duritz and Counting Crows for a couple of cuts—and then one of those songs that seems to belong permanently to the airwaves: Spirit — “Nature's Way.” And somewhere along tonight's road, we're going to need the blues. So we'll give the blues the room they deserve. Eric Clapton — “Have You Ever Loved a Woman” Then the fire of Jonny Lang, followed by the extraordinary Canadian blues master Jeff Healey. Three different players. Three different approaches. One language. The blues. From there we'll ease into a couple of sweet tunes from the Lads from Liverpool, spend some time with Dave Matthews, and then head up onto “Cripple Creek” with The Band. And we're still not finished. As the night starts winding toward home, we'll visit The Grateful Dead for “Tennessee Jed,” followed by the Robinson brothers and The Black Crowes with the beautiful “She Talks to Angels.” And finally... We open the doorway with Dickey Betts and a cut from Highway Call—Betts’ masterpiece of country rock, Texas swing, and Southern musicianship. With Chuck Leavell, Vassar Clements, and an extraordinary collection of players surrounding him, Highway Call remains one of those records that deserves to be heard from beginning to end. From there, we move into one of my favorite Greg Lake performances with Emerson, Lake & Palmer, before returning to the unmistakable guitar mastery of Dickey Betts, carrying that beautiful second harmony through “Melissa.” Then we head into progressive territory with Yes and “Starship Trooper,” followed by a memorable tune from the Lads from Liverpool. Justin Hayward in his prime with The Moody Blues leads us into a stretch where harmony takes center stage—The Grateful Dead and “Sugar Magnolia,” Poco, and a wonderful helping of the blues. The signal keeps moving with The Youngbloods and “Come Together,” followed by Poco's terrific “You Better Think Twice.” Then we settle in with Stephen Stills and explore some of the remarkable music surrounding his years with Manassas, Buffalo Springfield, and CSN&Y: “So Begins the Task” “Four Days Gone” “4 + 20” Three songs, three different moments, and one of the unmistakable voices of an extraordinary era in American music. Then it's back down South for another visit with Dickey Betts and Highway Call, followed by a long set from another giant of Southern rock—The Marshall Tucker Band. From there, the harmonica comes alive with John Popper and Blues Traveler. Later tonight, we turn toward the sophisticated side of rock and roll with Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and an extended dose of some excellent Steely Dan material. Nobody quite blended jazz, rock, studio perfection, strange characters, and razor-sharp songwriting the way those two did. And when it's finally time to bring the ship home, we'll lower the lights and close things out with some beautiful, mellower music from James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Joni Mitchell. Southern rock. From there we move to my favorite Rush song of all time, "Tom Sawyer," before beginning the first of many visits with the Allman Brothers Band throughout tonight's transmission. An immortal classic from Pink Floyd follows, before we head south for some Texas blues with Stevie Ray Vaughan, then into the magic fingers of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After, where speed and soul comfortably shared the same stage. The Southern journey continues with Warren Haynes, Asheville's own, and the mighty Gov't Mule, before settling into a special mini-set featuring the incomparable brothers Duane and Gregg Allman. We'll revisit another Floyd masterpiece, complete with one of those unforgettable guitar solos that seem to suspend time itself. Then it's time to climb aboard the Magic Carpet with John Kay and Steppenwolf, before opening another doorway through sound with Jim Morrison and The Doors. The lads from Liverpool are waiting just around the corner with a sweet set of timeless songs, before the energy rises once again with a couple of selections from my favorite David Bowie era and some high-octane classics from Deep Purple.
