    The Exorcisms which resulted in being Hanged Drawn And Quartered whilst still alive!

    Religious paranoia had a alot to answer for in the early modern period. Within Queen Elizabeth the firsts royal court, whispers of unruly catholics harbouring demoniacs were starting to circulate, and her royal highness was not best pleased. A new priest was gathering support for catholicism in Denham in Buckinghamshire and a few stubborn villagers refused to convert from protestantism so he used something he had stashed in his back pocket as the most impressive way of showing his connections to god...exorcisms. People arrived in their hundreds to witness these mainly young women undergo many casting's out. These were fantastical events, the women would screm and growl, their eyes would turn black and they'd exhibit super strength breaking free of their restraints which tied them to heavy wooden chairs. But these highly attended events were not going unnoticed by the queens spies and when the priests took their show on the road to London, they strayed too close to the dragon...but would they get burned? Well, let's just say the fire spread and resulted in one of the worst executions London has ever seen...     The Woman Who Was Burned To Save A Duchess - Margery Jourdemayne - The Witch Of Eye

    Most people think that London escaped the witch trials but it did have one which was so high profile and gruesome, it may have stopped any other from occurring. In todays episode of Macabre London, we hear from returning guest and folklore expert - Dr Francis Young who tells us about the first recorded trial for witch craft and how things evolve over the ears to turn into the witch panic of the early modern period. We take a look at a royal scandal which resulted in many deaths to do with supposed witchcraft and how the punishments dished out were not equal for those involved. We learn how witchcraft was weaponised and how it became twisted and demonised by the church and how it became an offence punishable by death. Did the adoption of Christianity cause witchcraft to boom or was it a case of being used to get rid of marginalised peole in society with a dash of misogyny. As the civil war raged on, people took advantage and one of those people was Matthew Hopkins. He setn hundreds of people, mainly women to their deaths but before him, how did witchcraft become such a hotbed of political tension and how did religion stick it's beak into the ways people had been living for years but now paired it with the devil - a christian invention...     How Churches Used the Devil to Control London - Doom Paintings Throughout History Did London's churches use the devil to terrify it's congregation? Well...yes! Today's episode of Macabre London: Belief and the Occult in the Capital City, we go on a field trip to a completely preserved church which somehow still has ALL of it's stained glass from the early 1500's complete with dozens of brightly coloured demons! We learn about how the devil came to be feared and how he also turns up centiries later on top of a church in a dispute over land in perhaps the pettiest piece of architecture known to man....and the devil. We learn about how doom paintings shaped peoples beliefs and how London's churches would've looked very different. We also take a look at the Flagellants with the help of Dr Eleanor Janega.     London's Plague Churches - The Churches That Delivered Death by Faith

    Did London's churches really give their attendees the plague...well yes! We learn about how many of them were created by significan't people, had notable people in their congregations and how they've watched over hundreds of years of history and significant events. We learn about how Christianity came to find London and how a tiny bit of the first church it arrived at still stands. Explore the fascinating history of London's oldest churches, from how All Hallows by the Tower has some of the oldest stones in London, St Olaves is where Mary Ramsey, the first plague victim is buried & St Bartholomew the Great is the only place in London to have had a visitation from the virgin Mary herself. St Bartholomew's may also be where the plague spread in Smithfield, leading to a huge plague pit by the Charterhouse.     How Magic Made London - From the Bronze Age to now - Introducing my new series about the OCCULT!

    If 2025 was the year of criminals for Macabre London then 2026 is the year of Magic! I'm so excited to be sharing my new series with you in this introduction episode. I'll be letting you in on my plans for this series, how I'll be exploring things and just what I'll be covering. I'll be taking things all the way back to the very beginnings of belief in London before it was even called London. Starting with an introduction to the occult and exactly what that means plus what you can expect in the first few episodes- spoiler alert, we'll be going over the first time London burned in the great fire that may have been caused by a goddess. But for the moment, I'm going to be introducing what this series is all about, how you can get involved and for the first time, welcoming experts to teach you AND me about these incredible esoteric worlds that we've yet to delve down. This will still be the Macabre London you know and love and I'll still be following real life stories which are linked to the occult.     Christmas is cancelled - sorry

    Not what I wanted to be putting out by RIP to my dear cat Boots who died yesterday - 13/12/25. She was an excellent cat, friend and daughter to me, I loved her so much and she was my family. I know many of you will know how much this hurts so thank you for understanding, this was not what I wanted to be doing at all, everything was very sudden and not expected but she was an old lady at 14 and she had a wonderful life. My brain is not in the game to be editing and putting things out so I'll see you all in 2026.
