9 Albums That Made Me Love Prog Rock

You've probably seen the meme making the rounds called 9 Albums That Made Me. It's supposed to show the albums that formed your musical identity. It's an almost impossible task to come up with just 9 albums so I decided to do album groups that are more focused. The first one that came to mind is 9 Albums That Made Me Love Prog Rock. All of these albums are from the 1970s, except for KC which is 1969. They came at a time when I was discovering my musical identity so in a sense these are the albums that made me. I could have easily included more Genesis or more Yes or even more KC but that's the fun of creating these lists - cutting the list to just 9 albums. There are some pretty well known LPs here and a few lesser known entries. One side note - Bill Bruford is on 4 of the 9 albums. What are your favorite Prog albums? Cheers! T R A C K L I S T : 08:17 Yes - Yours Is No Disgrace (The Yes Album 1971) 17:55 Triumvirat - Schooldays (Illusions on a Double Dimple 1974) 21:12 Genesis - The Lamia (The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 1974) 28:00 Strawbs - Round and Round (Hero & Heroine 1974) 32:34 King Crimson - Starless (Red 1974) 44:40 Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond Pt. 2 (Wish You Were Here 1975) 56:28 U.K. - By The Light Of Day + Presto Vivace And Reprise (U.K. 1978) 63:52 Bruford - Fainting In Coils (One of a Kind 1979) 70:15 end

Days Getting Darker - Autumnal Vibes '26

It's that time of year - time for a mix of autumnal music to go with falling leaves and shorter days. The last time I made one of these I used songs that had fall-like terms in the title - color, seasons, fall, leaves, etc. This time I just went for tunes that have an autumn vibe. Most of the tracks feature acoustic guitar because that seems to fit perfectly. The track list alternates between vocal tunes and instrumentals. I did that for the 2024 mix and I like the flow that creates. The music here is mostly new with 11 of the 16 tracks being from 2026 and the oldest being 2018. Wishing Train, Desert Plain by Paul Asbury Seaman

The Berlin-schoolification of my brain continues. A few years ago I came back to sequencer based Berlin-school music thanks to friend of the feed, Paul Asbury Seaman. The exact artist or moment has been lost in the mists of my mind (hmm, possible mix title "Mists of My Mind"?). But it was Paul who turned me on to the scene of modern sequencer driven music. Paul has consistently provided us with excellent "train" mixes that feature heavy doses of Berlin-school tracks. That brings us to his latest mix - Wishing Train, Desert Plain, a beautiful journey of hypnotic synth sequences. Here's what Paul has to say about this latest entry in his train themed mixes: "A train-themed mix is inherently about journeys. Like much of ambient-electronic music, that journey is more than imagination, memories and nostalgia. It is an invitation to explore inner landscapes. Although some of my train mixes are intended to provoke a sense of excitement and adventure, traveling to new places, I mostly have in mind the long, quiet spaces beyond city life, with no distractions, the subtle rhythm of the train inducing a meditative state, a time of calm reflection, inner stillness or focus. All tracks 2026 except “Critical Zone.” Cover image by Austrian synth maestro Fritz Mayr, commissioned specifically for this mix. Thank you, Mr. Mayr for your generous services (and generous heart!) Whoever says friendships we make on the internet are not real has not experienced the vibrant village life of the ambient/electronic cohort on Bandcamp and elsewhere." Thanks Paul for another great trip. Heartbeat of the Earth

This is another fairly straightforward mix theme. It dives back into tribal ambient featuring hypnotic, repetitive drums, electronics, traditional percussion, and field recordings. I've done several of these mixes over the years and it's always nice to revisit this style. I first got into this subgenre back in the 90s with the Steve Roach & Robert Rich album, "Strata." Like many musical phases, I overloaded on it and dismissed it for years. But now I really enjoy dipping into the sound every now and then. the aesthetic of static

My shortwave mixes go back a long way. My first one was posted almost 20 years ago in April of 2007. Yikes! I love the sound of these mixes and I love creating them. I collect tracks that sound like they'd fit the theme and when I have enough to make a mix I get cracking. Here are all the previous shortwave mixes: https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2007/04/drift-on-signal.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2008/06/ghost-in-phase.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2010/04/flicker-fade.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2011/03/distant-transmissions.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2012/05/on-behavior-of-radio-waves.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2023/04/lost-in-transmission.html While this mix uses some actual shortwave recordings, it relies more on the individual tracks to provide the radio transmission vibes. And of course snippets of The Conet Project have to find their way into any shortwave mix. I hope you enjoy this latest transmission from the ether. Dystopian Dream

I'm not sure how this mix started. It was probably just a case of me stumbling across a tune that made me think of a dystopian sci-fi movie and from there I collected tracks over a few years. From what I can tell, I started gathering songs 6 years ago. I wasn't sure what the mix would sound like when I started laying down the tracks. As it began to take shape I realized it kind of sounded like one of my Blade Runner mixes. It definitely has some of that vibe but I think it's different enough to be it's own thing. I'm very happy with how this one turned out especially considering I didn't have much a plan at the beginning. A Thousand Dreams by Roquen Lómë

I've said many times here that one reason I like hosting guest mixes is because they bring a diversity of styles and choices different from my regular offerings. This latest set from Roquen Lómë accomplishes that beautifully. This mix is lush and gorgeous in a way many of mixes are not. Playing this mix is like a breath of fresh air. Roquen Lómë says: "My last mix was so long in the making that it became sort of a trip to the past. So for this musical journey I wanted to stay as present as possible. But then again, music is timeless, and so are dreams. The *thousand* theme arose naturally while selecting the tracks aiming for more ambient and less vocal vibe. No lyrics this time - only dreamscapes." Thanks for this lovely mix! Slow Sequences

This mix is pretty straightforward - it's a collection of Berlin-school style tracks where the arpeggio is relatively slow. I don't know what the actual BPMs are but these tracks are not the driving sequences usually associated with Berlin-school music. They unfold at a more languid, chill pace. I was very happy to be able to include the track "Wenn der Südwind weht" by Roedelius in this mix as it's one of my favorite electronic tracks of all time. Painting the Sky - Music for the Perseid Meteor Shower 2026

The annual Perseid Meteor shower is a great excuse to create a mix of spacey ambient music that is perfect for stargazing. The best viewing nights will be August 12 & 13. I believe there will be a new moon this year so we should have nice, dark skies for viewing. I've done several of these in the past which you can find here: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/music-for-the-perseid-meteor-shower/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/perfect-perseid-playlist/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/soundtrack-for-perseid-meteor-shower-2025/ This mix is almost all music from 2026, with the opening track from 2025. Wandering Realms by Seabuckthorn

I have been a fan of Seabuckthorn for a long time. I think I have around a dozen or so releases. So when Andy Cartwright, who records as Seabuckthorn, offered to create a guest mix I was psyched. Andy did an excellent guest mix for LLM back in November of 2022 which you can find here: https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2022/11/seabuckthorn-transcendental-freq.html or here: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/seabuckthorn-transcendental-freq/ There is a new Seabuckthorn album out in the world - https://seabuckthorn.bandcamp.com/album/never-the-same-river So it's a perfect time for a mix to highlight some of the music that influenced the new album. Andy said this about the mix: "It has a kind of ritual/ceremonial/psych folk vibe to it, which was the feel I was going for in my latest album." I highly recommend checking out the new album and of course listening to this very cool mix. Also I think it's kind of hilarious that we followed a 4-hour mix with a 36-minute mix. Haha! Cheers! Faru - Summer Of Resonance

Most mixes posted here are around one hour in length. There needs to be a good reason to go well beyond that time. Well, this guest mix is a good reason to go long. This set comes to us from Faru - https://faru.bandcamp.com/music He has done a bunch of mixes over the years including for the Deep Breakfast series & Silent Season's Campfire Stories. You can find those mixes here - https://soundcloud.com/faruambient/sets/my-mixes Here's what he says about this 4-hour set: "The sun comes through the leaves in pieces, slow shifting fragments that move across your skin like something deliberate. The air smells of warm grass and blooming, that specific fullness when everything is happening at once. Pollen drifts through the light, weightless, golden, the leaves quietly dancing. Birds in the canopy. Voices not close enough to make out, just the shape of people being easy with each other, flowing past like part of the same current. The specific gravity and warm energy of another being, close. Three hours passing, or maybe more. Your breathing has slowed to match something you can't name but can feel. You are not waiting for anything. Just here, inside this particular moment. Which turns out to be everything." Faru said he likes a 4-hour mix because he wants the music to start being the environment. This mix envelopes you and does become part of the surrounding space. Thanks for a great mix! Cheers! Under a Heat Dome

It's been hot as hell here lately thanks to what the meteorologists are calling a "heat dome." Add in some smoke drifting in from Canadian wildfires and it makes being outdoors no fun. I wondered about hot weather music and thought slightly twangy, acoustic and electric guitar fits the mood. There's just something about these tracks that feels right for an oppressively hot day. I like this collection because it covers a wide range of years from 1984 to 2026, with stops in 1998, 2000, 2005, 2011, 2014, 2024, & 2025. I hope you enjoy the mix and stay cool. Cheers! Just My Type(records)

Recently I was messaging with LLM guest mixer, Roquen Lómë, about Type records - an experimental record label that was active from 2003 to 2013. Founded by John Twells & Stefan Lewandowski in the U.K., Type released some creative music in those ten years ranging from delicate piano to sculptured noise to glitchy electronica to ambient to psych folk. I thought it would be fun to create a mix of music from Type records catalog - then I looked at that catalog and, wow they sure did release a ton of music. There's no way to make an exhaustive review of their releases so I decided to go chronologically through some of my favorites. That still only scratched the surface, I think I have more than 40 Type records in my collection. It was nice listening to some of the recordings for the first time in years and I hope you too enjoy this little trip into the past. Cheers! The Joy of Trains by Paul Asbury Seaman

Another train mix? Another Berlin-school mix? Yes and hell yes! I've been struggling to keep up with creating new mixes and then, like a train pulling into the station right on time, Paul comes to me with a new mix. Perfect timing! This one has tunes that are all fairly recent so it was fun to hear new stuff or discover new artists. I'm always up for new Berlin-school music and this set from Paul does that with long, evolving tracks that suck you in and keep you going. Here's what Paul says about his latest collection: "I expect that for people who commute to work by train, there’s not much novelty in it. But most of my train-themed mixes imagine a long-distance trip where the journey itself is the experience and the destination somewhere in your imagination. As I’ve said before, sequencer-based “Berlin School” synthesizer music is a natural fit to evoke the subtle, hypnotic rhythms of travel by train. The six artists in this set were all new to me this year—and what a joy it has been to discover them." Thanks again, Paul, for this wonderful collection of train tracks. Cheers! Quiet Fusion 2026

A little over a year ago I posted a mix of quiet fusion jazz tunes which I really enjoyed curating. So it was only a matter of time before I made another and here it is. This mix has some of the same artists as the first one - Mile Davis, Soft Machine, Gong, Jean-Luc Ponty, Brand X, along with new additions. Not surprisingly, most of the tracks are from the 1970s, a few from the 80s and one new track by Elephant9 released in 2024. Here's the first quiet fusion mix - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/quiet-fusion/ I still plan on doing a straightforward fusion mix but for now this quiet set will do nicely. It's perfect early morning coffee music. Cheers! WABI SABI by Daniel Hawkins

I've been super busy lately so it's perfect timing for another wonderful guest mix from friend of the feed, Daniel Hawkins. Daniel has done 4 mixes for LLM, each of them a great ambient journey. You can find them here: Amiably Ambient The Silence Between Dark Woods Metallic Memories "This one takes some thoughtful curating to come up with such a cohesive set. Here what Daniel has to say about the mix: "Wabi Sabi conveys feelings of desolation and solitude. Within Mahayana Buddhism these can be considered positive traits, representing release from the material world and the possibility of transcendence to a simpler life. As Mahayana philosophy emphasizes direct experience over verbal explanation, Wabi Sabi may be best understood in a non-verbal, experiential way. According to Richard Powell, "Wabi Sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect." Many forms of Japanese art have been influenced by Zen and Mahayana philosophy over the past thousand years. The contemplation and acceptance of imperfection, as well as the awareness of constant flux and impermanence, have been particularly important to Japanese arts and culture. Awareness of the transience of all things heightens appreciation of their beauty, and evokes a gentle sadness at their passing. So I’d been working on this mix for months - adding metallophonic cuts that caught my fancy - as a follow up to last year’s Metallic Memories mix. The mix got to over 3 hours - and I wasn’t sure Dave would be amused. They were all good pieces of music - but I thought maybe a tighter focus would make a more cohesive mix. As I trimmed it down the Wabi Sabi theme seemed to fit the mood and I think makes a nice set. I hope you agree." Thanks for another fantastic mix, Daniel. Cheers! Hushed Whispers by Roquen Lómë

I am listening to this guest mix as I type this and I am loving this set. Curated by Roquen Lómë, this is a wonderful collection of tracks for slowing down, for introspection. You can find some of his stuff on Mixcloud - https://www.mixcloud.com/roguenlome/ Here's what he has to say about the mix: "There's something magical about listening to music late at night. You can dim the lights or turn them off entirely and immerse yourself in the sound. Your perception shifts just enough to highlight subtle noises, making any voices feel intimately near, though sometimes they may not be real. At times, they exist, and other times, they arise from your imagination or the onset of sleep. Most of the used tracks feature some form of vocal or whisper-like quality, though they may not always be tied to a human voice. I still tend to include vocal-driven songs into my mixes to provide an engaging contrast to the predominantly ambient and electronic sounds, ensuring the listener remains alert throughout the journey." Current Ambient Obsessions April 2026

We've had a few guest mixes recently with a couple more on the way so I figured we needed a straightforward ambient mix in between all the guest sets. This mix features all music from 2026, except the track by Slow Dancing Society & zakè which is from 2025. This also features some of my favorite ambient albums of the year so far: > Six Missing - drift, sway > James Murray - Solitude and Silence > Clariloops - As The Light Fades > David Cordero - La Imagen Muda LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX: https://norayrecords.bandcamp.com/album/la-imagen-muda https://sixmissing.bandcamp.com/album/drift-sway https://slowcraft.bandcamp.com/album/solitude-and-silence https://whitelabrecs.bandcamp.com/album/the-quiet-below https://arborescence32.bandcamp.com/album/bouquet-sauvage https://zakedrone.bandcamp.com/album/stars-silence https://projektrecords.bandcamp.com/album/infinite-and-unbound https://kordelrecords.bandcamp.com/album/les-id-es https://davidcordero.bandcamp.com/album/how-to-make-sense-of-downtime https://anthene.bandcamp.com/album/great-plains https://secretdomainlabel.bandcamp.com/album/heavenchord-infinity-dots-armenia The mix is very chill, very ambient. Train to Redemption by Paul Asbury Seaman

We are in for a real treat with this latest guest mix from Paul Asbury Seaman. Paul has done a bunch of "train" mixes over the years. He has also done several Berlin-School mixes. This one could be my favorite combo of the two themes. This wonderful mix plays right into my current obsession with the Berlin-School subgenre. I can't say enough about how much I love this mix. As I have stated here previously, I've been on a Berlin-School bender for the last few years. Although, now that I think about it, my return to this style has gone on long enough that it is no longer a bender or binge. It's just outright love for this genre. Paul has created an absolute gem so I'll let him tell you more about it: “People get ready…” Popular culture, especially in music, has long used the association with trains as an image of redemption. Part of the seductive appeal of long-distance travel is that something we experience might change or enlighten us. On a train we are free of the obligations and stress of driving, but also have a more private, sedentary experience conducive to withdrawing into ourselves than on a boat, a ship or a plane, yet--to emphasize the metaphorical lesson--in stillness we are also moving forward. This is the paradox: hurtling across the landscape (or through time) while sitting comfortably, without moving. Watching. Rejuvenating." Thanks again, Paul, for curating this fantastic collection of train tracks. ;-) Cheers!
