Logistics with Purpose: Steve Stirling with MAP International

As President and CEO since 2014, Steve Stirling brings a wealth of experience as well as a unique perspective to MAP International. While a child in post-war Korea in the early 1960s, Steve suffered a life-altering bout with polio – a disease that could have been prevented with a few cents-worth of medication. It was a disease that made Steve dedicate his life to bring critically needed medicines and health supplies to some of the world’s poorest people. Before assuming the role of President and CEO of MAP International, he held executive-level positions with nonprofits including with Child Fund International, Heifer International, Universal Life Sciences, ChildHelp and WorldVision US. Additionally, he worked for pharmaceutical companies that include the makers of Tylenol, Advil, and Bristol-Myers-Squibb/Mead Johnson Nutritionals. Steve earned his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics at Cornell University and his MBA in Marketing and Finance at Northwestern University. Logistics with Purpose: Shane Buerster with Z Beans Coffee
This episode of Supply Chain Now is a continuation of our Logistics with Purpose series, sponsored by Vector Global Logistics, and features Shane Buerster. On a Mercer On Mission trip during the summer of 2016, Shane Buerster, a rising junior at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, met Arturo Penarreta Romero, a 65 year old man from Zaruma, Ecuador. Throughout Shane's junior year of college, Arturo and Shane spoke on the phone 3 - 4 times a week, as a way to improve Shane's Spanish. But, the conversations quickly started focusing upon the idea of building a direct trade supply chain that'd enable the import of Ecuadorian coffee from small, micro-lot plantations. A few months later, Arturo sent Shane 65lbs of coffee, which arrived at his parents doorstep in Pooler, Georgia. After roasting the coffee and getting feedback from coffee connoisseurs, Shane decided to dive into the coffee business, birthing Zaruma Beans - or better put, Z Beans. The summer leading into his senior year of college, Shane secured his first small angel investment, enabling him to import 4,000lbs of Ecuadorian coffee. During his senior year, he began selling the coffee and adding key members to the Z Beans team. Upon graduation in the spring of 2018, Shane and his team opened their first coffee shop, while importing 14,000lbs of coffee from Ecuador that summer. Over the past three years, Z Beans has continued to grow. From a 23,000lb import during the summer of 2019, to four coffee shops and a roasting facility, Z Beans has become a staple of the Middle Georgia community. However, as the business grows, one key relationship remains at the forefront - that of Arturo Penarreta Romero and Shane Buerster. Logistics with Purpose: Joel Manby, Author of "Love Works"

Before joining Herschend Enterprises, He spent 20 years in the auto industry in general management and marketing roles primarily in General Motors’ Saturn and Saab divisions. He served as CEO of Saab Automobile USA from 1996 to 2000, during which Saab experienced the best sales result in its 50+ year U.S. history. In addition, He was CEO of Amazon’s car selling partner, which was sold to CarsDirect.com in 2001. Logistics with Purpose: Jonathan Starr & Trudy Hall with the Abaarso School
This episode of Supply Chain Now features Jonathan Starr and Trudy Hall. Jonathan Starr authored It Takes A School, published by Macmillan Henry Holt in February 2017. It tells the story of Jonathan’s founding and heading the Abaarso School of Science and Technology, a non-profit educational organization in Somaliland. Abaarso School has broken a decades long drought in Somali education with unprecedented success, including placing students at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, and MIT. In total the school has sent 150 students to continue their education globally. In 2017 Jonathan co-founded Barwaaqo University in Somaliland, the first all-female boarding university in the country. In 2019, he co-founded Kaabe Schools, with the mission of spreading high quality Montessori-inspired K-12 education throughout Somaliland and beyond. In 2018, he spoke at Marist College as part of Marist selecting It Takes a School as its first-year student required reading. From 2004 – 2008, Jonathan founded and led Flagg Street Capital, a private investment firm that managed $170 million of investor assets. Prior to Flagg Street, Jonathan worked at SAB Capital, Blavin and Company, and Fidelity Investments. Jonathan graduated from Emory University, where he received a B.A. Summa Cum Laude in Economics and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Trudy Hall had spent her professional career as an administrator in the world of independent education.
