Nicholas Alkemade: The Airman Who Fell 18,000 Feet Without a Parachute and Lived
On the night of 24 March 1944, RAF rear gunner Nicholas Alkemade was trapped in the burning rear turret of Lancaster DS664 during a return flight from Berlin. His parachute pack was stored outside the turret. When the crew was ordered to abandon the aircraft, he found that pack already on fire. Alkemade chose to leave the Lancaster at an estimated 18,000 feet without deploying a parachute. He survived the fall into a snow-covered conifer wood, but survival was only the beginning. Injured and unable to walk, he was recovered by local people, treated in hospital, and questioned by German authorities who suspected he had concealed a parachute. This episode follows the final flight of Lancaster DS664, the seven men aboard it, the investigation that tested Alkemade’s extraordinary claim, the evidence found at the landing site and wreckage, and the wartime records that preserved one of the most improbable survival stories of the Second World War.
