Ron O’Hare has spent more than 25 years working at the intersection of sport physiotherapy, leadership, and high performance. Today, he serves as Senior Manager of Health Performance at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, leading integrated health services supporting Olympic, Paralympic, and high-performance athletes and coaches.
But this conversation is about much more than Ron’s professional résumé.
We go back to his childhood, growing up “on the other side of the tracks,” and explore how sport became a place of structure, safety, identity, and belonging. Ron shares his journey from dreaming of becoming a professional baseball player to finding volleyball, eventually playing five years at Queen’s University before discovering his path into physiotherapy.
From there, our conversation moves through more than two decades of clinical practice, building and running his own clinic, raising four children, working within Canadian high-performance sport, and eventually stepping into health-performance leadership.
Ron speaks openly about compassion, caregiving, persistence, leadership, family, professional sacrifice, and the fatigue that can come from spending a career deeply invested in helping others. We also discuss how difficult experiences, including a tragic event involving an athlete during a training camp in St. Kitts, changed his perspective on leadership, responsibility, and what really matters.
At its heart, this is a conversation about the person behind the practitioner. About how our experiences shape the way we care for people, how our priorities change over a lifetime, and why meaningful careers are rarely built according to a perfectly constructed plan.
Another thoughtful conversation with an experienced practitioner, leader, father, coach, and genuinely reflective human being.
Enjoy.
