    In this episode, I take a deep dive into Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s visit to Will Macon’s heavily armed Nebraska compound, where Garrett Dillahunt’s character immediately raises questions about money, influence, extra-terrestrial threats and exactly what kind of operation he is running. We’ll look at why Billy Macon describes Hal and his father as “like-minded,” what Will appears to believe about Earth’s vulnerability, and why his obsession with history, colonisation and preparedness makes him such an intriguing counterpart to Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. There’s also the mystery of the ranch itself. Who actually owns it? Who is Will’s unnamed benefactor? How much influence does he have over Rushville? And what should we make of Sheriff Kerry Kane’s obvious unease around him? I also explore some of the wider DC possibilities surrounding Will Macon, including the online Manhunter and alien theories, and whether a completely different character from DC Comics might fit the evidence better.     Hal Jordan Deserted The Green Lantern Corps? S01E01 "Pilot" - Lanterns HBO Deep Dive Reaction & Analysis

    Who does Hal Jordan actually represent, and what happens when the authority of a Green Lantern runs into an ordinary courtroom in Nebraska? In this episode, I take a closer look at the aftermath of Hal’s arrest in Rushville, where Kyle Chandler’s veteran Green Lantern is forced to explain his legal standing, his relationship with the Green Lantern Corps and exactly who he currently answers to. I’ll get into Hal’s increasingly strange position within the Corps, his relationship with the Guardians of the Universe, and what his behaviour might suggest about the gap between the job he still performs and the organisation that originally gave it to him. That question also feeds directly into the mystery surrounding Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and the unusual way he is being prepared to replace Hal. There is also the continuing clash with Kelly Macdonald’s Sheriff Kerry Kane, the very earthly consequences of Hal’s freelance approach to law enforcement, and the arrival of Billy Macon, whose intervention opens up a new set of questions about influence, money and the wider social network surrounding Rushville. John Stewart remains central too. Has his relationship with Hal begun to soften? How much of Hal’s unconventional training has actually started to sink in? And how does John continue to balance his instinctive respect for rules and hierarchy against a mentor who seems increasingly suspicious of both?     What is Hal Jordan really trying to teach John Stewart, and why does this Green Lantern apprenticeship seem so different from the usual rules of the Corps? In this episode, I take a deep dive into Hal and John’s night in Rushville, Nebraska, where Green Lantern training collides with bourbon, jukeboxes, bar fights, alien mysteries and some very questionable uses of one of the most powerful weapons in the universe. We’ll look at the growing contrast between Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, particularly around authority, judgement, responsibility and the question of when a Green Lantern should actually use the ring. John still approaches the Corps, the Guardians of the Universe and the role itself with enormous seriousness, while Hal appears to operate according to a very different set of instincts. The episode also gives us more to examine around Hal Jordan’s origin and Abin Sur. Why did Abin Sur crash near Rushville? How was Hal selected? What role did the ring itself play?     The first five minutes of HBO’s Lanterns are here, giving us our first substantial look at the new DC Studios series and the version of the Green Lantern universe it is building. In this video podcast, I take a detailed, scene-by-scene look at the opening five minutes of Lanterns, examining the filmmaking, performances, characterisation, dialogue, visual storytelling and DC mythology already being established before the main story has even begun. This is a proper Lanterns deep dive rather than a simple reaction or plot recap, asking what the choices on screen might tell us about the characters, themes and dramatic language of the series. Lanterns stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, bringing two of DC Comics’ most important Green Lanterns into the new DC Universe. The wider cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Nicole Ari Parker and others. The series also has an unusually interesting creative team. Lanterns was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and DC Comics writer Tom King, with Mundy serving as showrunner. The opening episodes are directed by James Hawes, while the series comes from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television as part of the DCU overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. That combination makes Lanterns a particularly intriguing proposition. Damon Lindelof brings Lost, The Leftovers and HBO’s Watchmen; Chris Mundy comes from Ozark; Tom King brings years of experience writing DC Comics; and together they are taking characters associated with huge, brightly coloured cosmic superhero mythology and placing them inside a much more grounded HBO drama. So what kind of Green Lantern story are they actually making?
