The podcast for everyone passionate about landscape photography! Full time professional photographer, Grant Swinbourne and his guests discuss the world of landscape photography.

In each show, Grant talks to some of the best landscape photographers from around the world to get to know them better and talk to them about their inspirations and motivations, how they’ve developed their style and what they do and don’t like about being a photographer.

Ep 265 - Conservation Photography & Ecological Thinking with Anna Morgan
Anna Morgan came to landscape photography via veterinary science, her own practice, and a Master's degree in Conservation Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. That research brought photography and conservation together in ways that still shape everything she does. Now based on Vancouver Island after moving from the UK, Anna gravitates toward quiet, intimate scenes and abstract interpretations of the natural world rather than grand vistas or wildlife subjects. She chose landscapes partly to avoid disturbing animals, and partly because solitude in nature is central to her practice and her wellbeing. In this episode Anna talks about Indigenous stewardship and why she avoids sharing precise locations, her preference for intuitive and serendipitous shooting over heavy planning, and how she defines success as opening people's hearts rather than building a large audience. She also discusses running workshops focused on authenticity, creativity and ecological connection, and the thinking behind her master's thesis on photographers' roles in conservation. Ep 264 - From Australia, Across the World with Timothy Poulton
Timothy Poulton's path to landscape photography wound through graphic design, print marketing and a serious motorsport career that ended when the passion ran out. A cherry blossom shoot in Tokyo in 2007 pointed him in a new direction, and he hasn't looked back. Best known in Australia for his Photoshop and post processing courses, Timothy has built a reputation for helping photographers master complex digital workflows and prepare work confidently for print, competition and publication. His iconic Shocking Bondi image won the International Aperture Awards in 2011 and his courses regularly sell out. In this episode Timothy talks about building and eventually scaling back an international touring operation running up to 14 tours a year, the competitive realities and online negativity that come with a visible profile in the industry, and what he actually defines as success. Joe Cornish has been photographing landscapes professionally since the early 1980s, and few people in the UK have thought more carefully or more deeply about what landscape photography actually is. With an art school background and early influences including Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, Joe has always approached the landscape as an expressive art form rather than simple documentation. That philosophy runs through dozens of books, National Trust commissions, artist in residence projects at Fountains Abbey and Brimham Rocks, and a career that earned him an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society. In this episode Joe talks about cultivating curiosity and visual literacy as foundations for better photography, the value of collaboration and peer learning, and why he finds the craft of editing and printing as creatively satisfying as being out in the field. Ep 262 - Yosemite Landscape Photography with Michael Frye
Michael Frye has lived in or near Yosemite National Park since 1983. That kind of deep, sustained connection to a place shapes everything about how he photographs, and it shows in work that's been published in over 30 countries and featured in National Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer and American Photo among many others. His time at the Ansel Adams Gallery was formative, bringing him into contact with photographic history, printmaking and a way of working that emphasises decisions made before the shutter rather than fixes made after. Peter Eastway has been photographing for more than 50 years, from film era long exposures and surf photography to becoming one of Australia's most decorated and internationally recognised photographers. He's also spent four decades in publishing, running Better Photography magazine since 1995. His concept of The New Tradition and invisible Photoshop sits at the heart of how he works, subtle, seamless post production that expands creative control without drawing attention to itself. It's an approach that's earned him a Grand Master of Photography title and ambassadorships with Phase One, Canon, Adobe and others. James Andrew bought his first camera in 2018 to document his daughter growing up. He was working as an electrician at the time and spending his days off driving out into the Rockies alone. A Tuesday night aurora at Peyto Lake at minus 30 changed everything. Three years of learning the craft later, James walked away from a 20 year electrician career to pursue photography full time. Ep 257 - Project Based Landscape Photography with David Baker
David Baker started with a small digital camera photographing standing stones. Early photo blogging and the feedback it generated gradually shifted his focus from simple documentation toward images that convey how a place actually feels. Based in rural Aberdeenshire after a lifetime on the south coast of England, David works exclusively in long term projects, each with its own constraints and parameters. Five books published, more than 20 exhibitions including three appearances at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and an Arts Council funded solo show at Southampton City Art Gallery mark out a serious and sustained practice. In this episode David talks about using mapped circles, triangles and specific times as creative constraints, the role of instinct over heavy planning, and why printing and handmade books are the essential final step in his process. Tim Cooper is a full time picture framer based in northwest Tasmania who spends as much time as possible in the Tarkine, one of the most significant and threatened wilderness regions in the Southern Hemisphere. Since 2016 his photography has focused on the rainforests, rivers and rugged coastlines of this ancient landscape and the very real threats it faces from logging, mining and climate driven fire. His work documents not just the landscape but activists, burn scars and threatened species like the swift parrot, images built around conservation impact rather than likes. Kévin Pagès took a winding road to Iceland. Born in Spain, raised in France, a year in New Zealand sparked his passion for photography, and studies in Montreal turned it into a career. He's been based in Iceland for eight years now and shows no signs of leaving. His early studio work and cinematic portrait style have evolved into abstract landscape photography, often using drones to explore the shapes and patterns of glacier rivers from above. It's distinctive work that earned him Sony Emerging Photographer of the Year in 2016/2017 and a Broncolor GenNext ambassadorship. Paul Moon has been photographing the Yorkshire Wolds for years, and that depth of time in one place comes through clearly in his work. Ep 253 - Candace Dyer on Moving from Landscapes to Wildlife Conservation Photography
Candace Dyar started photographing as a way to manage anxiety and depression, taking her Canon SLR out on hikes as a therapeutic outlet. That early connection to nature, combined with an art history background, gradually shaped a practice with a much bigger purpose. Based in Washington State, Candace now works at the intersection of wildlife photography and conservation advocacy, partnering with organisations like the World Wildlife Fund and Defenders of Wildlife to draw attention to threatened species and the ecological importance of apex predators. A wolf encounter in Yellowstone in October 2021 was a turning point that shifted her focus decisively toward wildlife. Ep 252 - Healing through Woodland Photography with Simon Baxter
Simon Baxter's path to photography wasn't straightforward. A back injury in 2012 ended his adrenaline fuelled outdoor life, mountain biking, kayaking, snowboarding, and forced him to find a slower way back to the natural world. A labradoodle puppy called Meg did exactly that. Their woodland walks around the North York Moors gave Simon something unexpected. The solitude, the complexity of trees and the therapeutic benefits of time spent among them became the foundation of an entire career. He's now recognised as one of the world's leading woodland photographers. Ep 251 - Aurora & Alpine Photography with Daniel Tschurtschenthaler
Daniel Tschurtschenthaler has spent 20 years photographing the Dolomites from his home in Sexten, and it shows. He sees the landscape in frames constantly, and that deep familiarity with a place comes through in his work. A former painter and varnisher, Daniel turned his hobby into a full time career and now runs his own showroom in Sesto. He was also the subject of a three year Servus TV documentary about his life and practice, released in 2022. In this episode Daniel talks about using paragliding to read weather and reach high alpine locations, sleeping on peaks to photograph Milky Way arches, and the aurora fever that gripped him after photographing the northern lights over the Dolomites for the first time in 2023. Zac Henderson has been shooting since he was 15, starting on his mother's film camera. These days he and his wife live and travel full time in a motorhome across the US, and that nomadic life feeds directly into his work. Ep 249 - Waterfalls & Wild Mournes with Naomi Savage
Naomi Savage's photography grew out of a life in music. Shooting gigs in Belfast gave her an eye for light and timing, and after taking night classes in 2017 and learning manual settings properly, she turned that eye toward the landscapes on her doorstep in Northern Ireland. Living in Tahiti gives her direct access to some of the world's most extraordinary marine environments, and that proximity shapes everything she does. Her Ephémères Impressions project, a minimalist series exploring the fragility of Pacific marine life, resulted in a sold-out book that won gold at both PX3 Paris and TIFA Tokyo. It's serious, internationally recognised work built around color, abstraction and a deep concern for environmental fragility. In this episode Brigitte talks about finding her direction through workshops in Japan, the influence of Michael Kenna on her thinking, and how an instinct led, tripod and filter based process defines her approach.
