State lawmakers look to ban AI-deepfake political ads close to Election Day
As artificial intelligence grows and expands, the threat it poses to our elections grows with it. Whether it's fake advertising, misleading information, or downright lies, AI could have a profound effect on upcoming elections. State leaders took action in 2024, requiring things like disclosures on political ads using AI. But did that go far enough? Utah kids falling victim to expensive scams and fraud
More than $1 million -- that's how much money Utah kids lost last year to online scams. The data comes from a new FBI report just released. Utah ranks only 23rd for the number of complaints from victims 17 and younger. But the state ranks 3rd in the country for money lost. Nationwide, victims 17 and younger reported nearly $13 million in losses. Ouch. Greg and Holly discuss ways parents can better help their kids avoid these costly mistakes.

Gov. Cox voices concerns with Flock cameras, support for MIDA reform
Worries over privacy and security with the ever-growing Flock cameras have made it to Utah's Capitol Hill. Governor Spencer Cox has ordered a full privacy review amidst concerns and allegations that the data on those cameras is being misused. The comments from the Governor came during his August news conference and came following a report from the Utah Civic Compact about cameras in Weber County being accessed millions of times by out-of-state agencies. During his monthly news conference, the governor also spoke about the Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) and the need for more reform for this agency. Greg and Holly kick off the show discussing both of those topics.

Fights for religious freedom on display in Texas
There are a couple of interesting situations right now coming out of Texas… which deal with the concept of religious freedom. One has to do with a state law that requires a copy of the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. The other deals with foot-washing facilities for members of the Islamic faith in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport. The airport was going to install these kinds of wash basins, until the governor threatened to pull funding if they did. Greg and Holly have a lively discussion on the First Amendment and freedom of religion.

FTC proposes rule to crack down on personalized pricing
Some potential good news for consumers! The FTC says that companies that secretly change prices of goods based on how much they think you'll pay for something could face some stiff federal charges. Some retailers have begun to use customers' private data to change the price of goods depending on the person. So some people may pay more for the same thing because the retailer thinks they would. Now, the Federal Trade Commission proposes a policy change that would add some severe penalties should retailers use this kind of pricing.

Settlement reached in case involving viral allegations of broken contracts with Utah-based Lego reseller
Allegations of theft and shady business practices went viral on social media, detailing claims of broken contracts for a popular Utah-based Lego reseller, Bricks and Minifigs. Senate Pres. Adams threatens to sue several critics for defamation
He lost his primary election, and he's headed out the door, but State Senate President Stuart Adams isn't leaving quietly. Now, he's threatening to sue several of his critics for defamation. Lawyers for Stuart Adams sent "cease and desist" letters to four of his critics, asking them to correct the record or face a lawsuit. Adams claims that comments made after his primary election loss by State Auditor Tina Cannon, Gabi Finlayson of Elevate Strategies, and two hosts of a conservative podcast were false and defamatory. But those critics aren't backing down.

Proposed ICE detention facility canned; Utah GOP support for Senator Curtis' migrant worker bill grows
It's official: the federal government is dropping its plans to convert a west side Salt Lake City warehouse into an ICE detention facility. Several local leaders have praised the cancellation, saying it never should have moved as far ahead as it did. But does that mean the feds are "done done" with plans to build an ICE detention facility here? Or could they just move it somewhere else? At the same time, a proposal from Senator John Curtis to give migrant workers an easier path towards citizenship appears to have a lot of opposition online, but recent polling of Utah Republicans finds a majority are on the same page with the Senator.
