You're not alone - how to tackle rejection in a job search

So you had your heart set on the job. You did the best you could, you got a great interview, they seemed to love you, and then you found out you didn’t get the job. Or maybe you’re getting generic rejection emails from every job you apply for. Either way, it's easy to get discouraged. This episode has been highly requested, so Sarah and Emma go through our tips, as well as the tips our listeners submitted on Instagram. This one is less about practical advice, and more about support, and we include a great mindset exercise at the end to help you put your rejection into context. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Simon Hi Emma and Sarah, I started job hunting almost 5 months ago and didn't have a lot of luck until recently! Coming from a toxic work environment had shattered my confidence and it was showing, I had been applying for roles beneath my ability with little success. After a good reset over the new year and then a holiday walking around Tasmania (i'm from NZ) I thought I needed to really do something about this and started listening to your podcast! I listened to over a dozen episodes whilst on holiday and surpise a company I had applied to, rang and wanted an interview as soon as possible, so whilst on holiday we did a zoom interview which I thought I bombed, but they wanted a second one when I got back. long story short your positive practical advice gave me the confidence and tips I needed to succeed in the interviews and I just got the job this week! It's a step up, with more pay, slightly less hours and great benefits. But most importantly the people there are so nice; it's almost a dream. I've been telling everyone about your podcast, so please keep it up! Cheers Simon” ☕ Did our podcast help you out? Want to say thank you in coffee form? So you didn't get the job. How was the decision made behind the scenes?

So you didn't get the job. Maybe you're feeling a little down, or maybe you're just trying to figure out what happened—why weren't you the best person for the job? How do you fix it next time? In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma, we talk about some real, boring conversations that happen behind closed doors that show that there often isn't anything you did wrong or missed—it often depends on your match to the business and their particular circumstances. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Jes who bought us 20 coffees!! “I decided to begin looking for a new job this past fall and have been listening to all of your podcasts (many of them several times!) as I've been preparing my cover letters, resume, and practicing my interview reaponses. With each interview I reviewed the experience, asked for feedback when possible, and made notes in my interview prep notebook. While doing this I was also applying to grad school and using your resume and cover letter tips for that as well. I'm pleased to share that a few weeks ago I received an offer letter for an amazing job with a 30k salary increase in addition to an offer of addmision to the doctoral program I had applied to!! I truly believe none of this would have been possible so quickly without your invaluable podcast and resources. Thank you heaps ladies!! ☕” ☕ Did our podcast help you out? In this fun lighthearted episode, Sarah and Emma talk all things work, and go through the things that we think are better off being left in the past, and all the things we want to see more of in the future. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Abigail “Hi! My name is Abigail. I’m from Pennsylvania, USA. I have a success story for you! I just graduated from college in December 2022, I started listening to your podcasts Wednesday while driving to an interview and started bingeing them through the week. I had 3 final interviews for 3 different companies on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Your advice helped me so much and made me feel much more confident. By Friday afternoon, I received 3/3 job offers!! (lab support specialist, quality control analyst, and scientist 1). I was able to negotiate my ideal shift and starting pay using your advice as well as accept and appropriately decline the other 2 offers!! Things you should do if you have just been laid off

Being laid off can be a traumatic experience, especially when it's not expected. In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma help you put your life back on track when you receive bad news and address the different things you need to do in order to get a job and thrive again. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Kristen! “Hi Emma and Sarah!! I’m taking you up on your offer to slide into your DMs. I’ve been listening to your podcast from all the way over in the US for about 2 months since I made the decision to start looking for jobs. I love the people I’ve worked with for the last 4 years, but I felt stunted in my growth and was severely underpaid. Your podcast has been so helpful to me through my interview process. I love your 3-part storytelling tip: it completely changed the way I prepared for interviews. Over the last 6 weeks, I’ve had 4 interviews with one company, and just signed an offer letter yesterday! I’ll be paid 2.5 TIMES what I was getting paid. It feels unreal. Thank you so much for infusing some lightheartedness into the job seeking process. How to bring up a planned vacation in your job search

To tell your new possible future employer that you will need to take a week off in three weeks can be a big stumbling block in the job application. Will it be a deal breaker? Will they let you go on the holiday?! In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma reassure you that it is okay to talk about it and in fact, it’s better to discuss it upfront so you can avoid any awkward conversations later on. We even do some role plays so you can hear how this conversation might sound. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Cole. “Hello, Sarah and Emma! I just graduated with my MBA, and I have been listening to your podcast on Spotify for the past two months (yes, I have listened to every episode!). I have had panel interview after panel interview, but don’t worry, I brought my notepad (even if it was on zoom 🤪). I want to thank you both so much, because I just got offered my dream job at my dream company in my dream city, and they paid me 15% more than I asked for! I’m going to be transitioning from graduate school to literally building space stations and space shuttles! I couldn’t have done it without the two of you!” ☕ Did our podcast help you out? Just graduated? Here's how to use transferable experience in your interview answers

So you just graduated university, you've got no relevant work experience and you're going in for an interview tomorrow. How are you going to answer their interview questions? First of all- don't panic!! The employer doesn't expect you to have experience doing exactly what the job is (especially if it's a graduate role). In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma cover the tips for people who have just graduated to PROVE that you have more transferable experience than you think. This is a great listen for anyone new to the workforce, or in the middle of a career change 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to From Es. “Hi ladies! I just wanted to reach out to thank you for what you do. I got laid off a couple of months ago and had to start looking for a new job which has been incredibly stressful to say the least. I decided to do a full 180 and look for work outside of the healthcare field (which is all I've done for 13 years). I listened to the "listen to this before your interview" episode as I was driving to the interview and had so much self doubt I almost cancelled, but your encouragement helped me get there and while I was in the parking lot I figured at the very least I could use the experience as practice. I followed all your tips to a T and received an offer! I can't thank you enough as this job comes with a significant raise. I'm so glad I binged your episodes in the week prior. "Please respond to the selection criteria"

Let's get something straight: selection criteria is not one of the fun things about the job search. If Sarah had her way, selection criteria responses would be banned permanently. However, if you’re applying for government or healthcare roles, it's a necessary evil, and if you want the job, it’s something you just have to do 😭 In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down how to craft a great selection criteria response. We go through the prep and background research that might help, the structure you should aim for, and we give you some great examples. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Andrea who shouted us 5 coffees! “Thank you so much for your podcast. About a month ago I was overwhelmed at the idea of re-entering the workforce after being self-employed for the last 16 years. Your interview advice really helped me nail the first and second interview and I have now been offered the position. It was my first interview in 16 years and I have no doubt I would not have done as well without your practical advice advice and insights. Plus, I had the confidence to negotiate a better salary. WHY do recruiters ask where you are interviewing? Here's what to say

If you're interviewing, you might be asked by a recruiter if you are interviewing with anyone else. Are you meant to say you have tons of interviews in order to seem in demand, or should you say they are your only choice to show how interested you are? In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma discuss what to say when recruiters or hiring managers ask if you're interviewing with other companies. We're going to discuss why they ask the question, the different ways you can answer it, and how that's going to affect how you get off the phone with that recruiter. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Sarah “Hi girls! I wanted to thank you for your podcast, you changed my whole mindset of interviews! My I had a few in the past few weeks and they were all soo different from the last. My interview last week was awful! The lady was so rude, was talking to me like I was in a disciplinary meeting.. I usually would have gotten upset and flustered, but instead I knew this was just as much for me as it was for them! So I started asking her questions, turned the tables and she soon stopped trying to walk over me. I made the call myself and called the recruiter who arranged the meeting that I didn’t vibe and have no interest in working with her. Apparently the other interviewers loved me and so no bridges burnt there thankfully! My last interview went for over an hour! I loved their attitudes and asked them loads of questions that I’d prepared thanks to you girls ❤️ they called me an hour afterwards to say they loved me and when could I start!! It’s such a relief, I’ve been in an awful toxic work place the past few years and am on maternity leave and was dreading going back.. so I wanted to thank you (again!) for all your support and advice. Listened to eye of the tiger on my way as well as your pre interview pep talk and what a vibe 😂👏🏼 x” 📄 To book an interview coaching session with Sarah, go to www.interviewboss.com.au/coaching 💌 Follow us on Instagram 💻 Check out our website for free jobseeker resources www.interviewboss.com.au
