Adriana Cloud

You don’t have to hit rock bottom. You don’t need to call yourself an alcoholic. And you definitely don’t have to commit to never drinking again if that feels too scary.

How to Drink Less is for anyone who’s ready for a healthier, more intentional relationship with alcohol—whether you’re just starting on your sober-curious journey, trying to cut back on drinking, or looking for a new way to control alcohol cravings without relying only on willpower.

Hosted by sobriety coach and hypnotist Adriana Cloud, this podcast combines practical neuroscience, psychology, and mindset coaching to help you:

—understand why you drink (and sometimes overdrink);

—retrain your brain’s reward system and habit loops;

—stop drinking on autopilot;

—manage cravings without feeling deprived;

—build confidence and emotional resilience as you drink less;

—feel more in control around alcohol.

No judgment, no scare tactics, and no pressure to be perfect—just practical tools and compassionate support from someone who’s been there.

As a former daily drinker, Adriana knows firsthand how challenging it can be to break a habit that's been decades in the making. Now, as a certified Gray Area Drinking coach and hypnotist, she uses her training and personal experience to help others take the leap and build the beautiful sober (or sober-ish) life they truly want.

    74. What Are You Practicing When You Drink?

    Every time you drink, you're practicing something. Drink after a stressful day—you're practicing using alcohol to escape stress. Drink because everyone else is drinking—you're practicing letting the group influence your decision. Drink whenever you're bored, anxious, or celebrating—you're reinforcing the association between those experiences and alcohol. But here's the good news: Every time you choose not to drink, you're practicing something too. In this episode, I offer you one simple question that can completely change the way you think about both your drinking nights and your sober ones. You'll learn: how repetition turns drinking patterns into automatic habits; what you're actually practicing when you reach for alcohol in response to stress, boredom, FOMO, or uncomfortable emotions; why a sober evening isn't simply an absence of drinking—it's practice for a new way of responding; one question to ask yourself the next time you're deciding whether to drink. Every repetition gives your brain new evidence about what you're capable of. And if you want not drinking to eventually feel easy, you have to give yourself opportunities to practice it while it still feels hard. If you keep finding yourself repeating the same drinking patterns even though you genuinely want to change them, this episode will help you understand why—and show you how every small choice can become practice for doing something different. 🎓 Want help getting better at not drinking? 73. Do This to Stay Sober Tonight

    Are you trying not to drink tonight? Don't make it harder by worrying about whether you'll drink at Christmas, on your next vacation, or for the rest of your life. Your only job right now is to figure out tonight. In this practical episode, I walk you through a simple plan for getting from the end of the workday to bedtime without drinking—without white-knuckling your way through the evening or getting sucked into an exhausting debate with yourself. You'll learn: why thinking too far into the future can make staying sober tonight feel overwhelming; how to plan your evening instead of simply hoping you'll resist temptation; why you should anticipate your craving before it arrives; how to handle wanting alcohol without fighting the desire or giving in to it; and how thinking about tomorrow morning can help you make a different choice tonight. You don't need to decide whether you're quitting forever. You don't even need to feel confident that you can do this long term. You just need a plan for tonight. Try it as an experiment. See what comes up. And when you wake up tomorrow morning with one alcohol-free night under your belt, you'll have something you didn't have yesterday: evidence that you can do it. 🎓 Want to go beyond getting through tonight and actually stop wanting alcohol? 72. You Don't Actually Want Alcohol

    What if the craving you're feeling isn't actually for alcohol? In this episode, I challenge one of the biggest assumptions we make about drinking: that when we think "I need a drink," what we really want is alcohol. That's not really true. Alcohol is simply the strategy your brain has learned to use to get something else—relaxation, confidence, connection, relief, belonging, or a break from the noise in your head. Once you understand what you actually need, you stop fighting the drink and start solving the real problem. In this episode, you'll learn: why alcohol is always a means to an end; how to uncover the deeper need hiding underneath your craving; why your brain keeps offering alcohol as the solution (and why that's completely normal); how to start finding other routes to relaxation, confidence, connection, and comfort; and one simple question that can completely change the way you respond to cravings. This episode will help you pause, get curious, and discover what you really need next time your brain says "I need a drink." 🎓 Want to stop wanting alcohol instead of constantly trying to resist it? 71. "Why Can't I Stop at One Drink?" [Listener Q&A]

    Have you ever promised yourself you'd only have one drink... and then found yourself pouring a second, a third, or finishing the whole bottle? You're not alone. In this episode, I explain why stopping at one drink is so much harder than it seems—and why it has far less to do with willpower than you might think. We'll explore what alcohol does to your brain after the first drink, why one drink creates the desire for another, and why it's often easier to have no drinks at all than to stop after one. In this episode, you'll learn: why your brain makes different decisions before and after the first drink; how alcohol shifts your attention from long-term goals to immediate rewards; why some people can stop at one while others struggle; and why the most important decision happens before the first drink, not after it. If you've ever wondered, "Why can I never stop at one?" this episode will help you understand what's really happening inside your brain—and that awareness will help you make more intentional choices. ---- Come to my free class "How to Stop Wanting Alcohol": https://acloudcoaching.as.me/ *** Grab my free guide "7 Steps to Kickstart Your Sobriety": https://www.adrianacloud.com/7-steps Book a free consultation: https://acloudcoaching.as.me/consult Get in touch with questions or comments: adriana@adrianacloud.com Follow me on TikTok: @coach_cloud_

    70. Make It Easy to Say No to the Drink

    Do you ever feel like you're relying on sheer willpower to get through the evening without drinking? In this episode, I share simple, practical ways to change your environment so that saying no to alcohol becomes the easier choice. Because successful habit change isn't about constantly resisting temptation—it's about stacking the odds in your favor. In this episode, you'll learn: why your environment has a bigger influence on your drinking than you realise; how tiny changes can reduce cravings and interrupt autopilot; simple strategies like changing your route home, creating a new after-work ritual, and making alcohol-free alternatives easier to reach; why making sobriety easier isn't cheating—it's smart habit change. 69. Nonalcoholic Drinks: Helpful Replacement or Slippery Slope?

    Are nonalcoholic drinks keeping you hooked, or can they actually help you stay sober? In this episode, I answer one of the questions I get asked constantly: Are non-alcoholic drinks okay to rely on or are they just perpetuating the dependence? I break down why I think they're one of the most useful tools available to you, how to choose what to drink, and the thing worth watching for as you look for replacements for your old alcoholic favorites. You'll learn: why so much of drinking was never really about the alcohol, but the ritual around it; the real math behind trace alcohol (and why a 0.5% beer isn't likely to get you drunk); why some people find certain non-alcoholic drinks triggering, and what to reach for instead; how to stop chasing the "perfect replacement" and start asking what you're actually looking for; the one pattern to stay curious about, so a helpful tool doesn't quietly develop into a new dependence. If you've been avoiding nonalcoholic drinks because you were worried that would be cheating at sobriety, this episode will put that worry to rest. *** Join my free class "How to Stop Wanting Alcohol" to learn how to rewire your brain so it stops craving alcohol in the first place: https://acloudcoaching.as.me/ *** Grab my free guide "7 Steps to Kickstart Your Sobriety": https://www.adrianacloud.com/7-steps Book a free consultation: https://acloudcoaching.as.me/consult Get in touch with questions or comments: adriana@adrianacloud.com Follow me on TikTok: @coach_cloud_

    68. How to Break the “I’ll Start Tomorrow” Cycle [Listener Q&A]

    Do you wake up determined not to drink... only to reach 6 p.m. and think, "I'll just have a drink tonight, but I definitely won't drink tomorrow"? If that cycle feels painfully familiar, this episode is for you. Today I'm answering a listener question about one of the biggest lies our brains tell us when we're trying to change our drinking: that tomorrow will somehow be easier. In this episode, we'll explore: why "tomorrow" is such a tempting promise; the hidden beliefs underneath "I'll start tomorrow"; how to flip the script and take the pressure off tonight's decision; and why every choice you make is teaching your brain what to expect tomorrow. If you're tired of promising yourself tomorrow you'll be different, this episode will help you understand what's really happening—and how to finally break the cycle. 🎓 Want to learn how not just to quit drinking but how to stop craving alcohol? 67. Why Sobriety Feels So Hard (At First)

    Why does sobriety feel so awkward at first? Because you're a beginner. In this episode, we're talking about one of the biggest mistakes people make when they try to cut back or quit drinking: expecting themselves to feel comfortable saying no to alcohol from day one. The truth is, you're not just learning how to stop drinking. You're learning how to relax, celebrate, socialize, travel, cope with stress, and enjoy ordinary life in a completely new way. In this episode, you'll learn: why awkwardness isn't a sign you're failing; why cravings and discomfort are a normal part of learning; how to stop interpreting "this is hard" as "I'm bad at this"; and why treating yourself like a beginner can make the whole process feel lighter. If you've ever thought, "Why can't I just do this already?" this episode is your reminder that nothing has gone wrong. You’re not failing at sobriety. You're just new at it. *** Grab my free guide "7 Steps to Kickstart Your Sobriety": https://www.adrianacloud.com/7-steps Book a free consultation: https://acloudcoaching.as.me/consult Get in touch with questions or comments: adriana@adrianacloud.com Follow me on TikTok: @coach_cloud_

    66. Whose Voice Are You Listening to When You Drink?

    Do you hate being told what to do? If so, this episode is for you. So many people tell me they resist cutting back on alcohol simply because they don't like rules—even rules they make for themselves. But what if drinking isn't actually the rebellious choice? In this episode, we're exploring a powerful question: Whose voice are you listening to when you choose to drink? We'll talk about how our beliefs about alcohol are shaped by family, friends, culture, advertising, and years of repetition—and why many of the thoughts you have about drinking may not be as original as they feel. You'll learn: why feeling rebellious doesn't necessarily mean you're making a free choice; how habits and social conditioning influence your drinking without you realizing it; the difference between reacting automatically and choosing intentionally. If you've ever wondered whether you're really choosing alcohol—or simply following a script you've been handed—this episode will give you a whole new perspective on cravings, habits, and personal freedom.

    65. How Alcohol Affects Your Sleep

    If you've ever said, "Alcohol helps me fall asleep," this episode is for you. Today we're talking about why alcohol seems to help you fall asleep, what it's actually doing to your brain and nervous system, and why so many people wake up at 3 a.m. feeling anxious, restless, and wide awake after drinking. You'll learn: the difference between sedation and restorative sleep; how alcohol affects your sleep cycles, especially REM sleep; why drinking can increase anxiety and exhaustion over time; what happens when your brain learns to associate alcohol with bedtime; practical ways to fall asleep without relying on a drink. If you're someone struggling to sleep without a drink, you're not alone. But for so many people, the problem isn't sleep at all—it's stress, overwhelm, anxiety, or not knowing how to transition out of "doing mode" at the end of the day. If you've been wondering whether alcohol is helping your sleep or actually making it worse, this episode will help you understand what's really happening—and what to do instead.

    64. 2,000 Hangovers I Never Had

    Today marks 2,000 sober days for me. That's 2,000 hangovers I never had. 2,000 mornings I woke up with a clear head. 2,000 opportunities to show up for my life. When I first started trying to change my drinking, I thought sobriety would give me more energy, fewer regrets, and maybe help me lose a little weight. What I got instead was so much more. In this episode, I reflect on the unexpected gifts of sobriety, including: getting my time and mental bandwidth back; learning how to experience joy without numbing; rebuilding self-trust and self-respect; creating a life that feels bigger, richer, and more meaningful; and how small everyday decisions can completely transform your future. Whether you're on day 1, day 100, or simply wondering what might be possible if alcohol played a smaller role in your life, this episode is an invitation to think bigger. What do you want your life to look like three months from now? Six months from now? Five years from now? 63. What Is Alcohol Helping You Tolerate?

    What if alcohol isn't helping you cope with your problems? What if it's helping you tolerate them? In this episode, I explore the idea that alcohol keeps us settling for lives that are smaller, harder, and less fulfilling than they could be. I talk about how drinking becomes a shortcut to temporary relief, why alcohol feels like it's helping in the moment, and how it can quietly keep you stuck in situations that aren't working—whether that's a stressful job, a lonely relationship, burnout, people-pleasing, or something else entirely. You'll learn: why alcohol feels like relief but doesn't actually solve anything; the difference between relaxation and sedation; how drinking can make it easier to tolerate what you don't want; and how breaking your dependence on alcohol can create positive ripple effects in every area of your life. If you've ever wondered whether alcohol is helping you avoid a difficult truth, this episode is for you. 62. How to Manage Cravings without Willpower

    If you're trying to drink less or quit completely, cravings can feel like the hardest part. One minute you're fine. The next, your brain is telling you that a drink sounds like the best idea you've ever had. But what if cravings aren't a sign that you're failing? In this episode, I explain what alcohol cravings actually are, where they come from, and why most people make them much harder than they need to be. You'll learn: what is actually happening in your brain when a craving appears; why trying to fight or suppress a craving often backfires; how to respond to cravings without relying on willpower; practical tools you can use the next time your brain tells you that you "need" a drink. Remember: cravings are normal, and they're temporary. You don't need to be afraid of them, and you don't need to get rid of them before you can change your relationship with alcohol. *** FREE LIVE CLASS: Never Want Alcohol Again: https://acloudcoaching.as.me/ *** Grab my free guide "7 Steps to Kickstart Your Sobriety": https://www.adrianacloud.com/7-steps Book a free consultation: https://acloudcoaching.as.me/consult Get in touch with questions or comments: adriana@adrianacloud.com Follow me on TikTok: @coach_cloud_

    61. You Already Know How to Quit Drinking

    What if the problem isn’t that you can’t quit drinking… but that you keep telling yourself you can’t? In this episode, I’m challenging the belief that sobriety is something other people know how to do but you somehow don’t. We’ll talk about: the difference between “I can’t” and “I haven’t yet”; why your self-talk matters more than you think; how to break down moderation and sobriety into a set of learnable skills; and how to stop using your past as evidence for your future. Because you don't need to become a completely different person to change your drinking. You already have the skills — you just need practice, repetition, and support while the new patterns take root. And if you’re ready to stop white-knuckling and to finally free yourself of your dependence on alcohol, I can help you. 59. What Are You Saying Yes to When You Say No to Alcohol?

    What if focusing on what you’re “giving up” is the very thing making it harder to change your drinking? In this episode, I’ll help you shift out of deprivation and into possibility by asking one powerful question: What are you saying yes to when you say no to alcohol? We’ll talk about: • why your brain fixates on alcohol as a “loss”; • the psychology behind FOMO and deprivation; • how drinking becomes automatic and reactive; • why choosing not to drink is an intentional act of self-trust; • and the short- and long-term things you’re actually saying YES to when you skip the drink. 58. Is the A-Word Keeping You Stuck?

    Is the word “addiction” keeping you stuck? In this episode, I’m challenging a belief that many people take for granted—and that might be making it harder to change your drinking. Because labels like addict and addiction can create shame, reinforce powerlessness, and make the problem feel bigger than it is. In this episode, we explore: why “addiction” isn’t a clear-cut diagnosis; how labels like "addiction," "addict," and "alcoholic" shape the way you see yourself; why thinking of drinking as a habit is a lot more useful if you're trying to quit or drink less; and how to start changing that habit. This isn’t about minimizing your experience or the effects alcohol can have on your life. It’s about giving you a framework that actually helps you move forward. 57. Why You Still Want to Drink

    If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I don’t even want to drink... so why do I still crave alcohol?” — this episode will give you a clear answer. Because the desire for alcohol isn’t random, and it’s not a sign that something is wrong with you. In this episode, I break down exactly where the desire for alcohol comes from and why it can feel so automatic—especially in certain situations, at certain times of day, or with certain emotions. You’ll learn: the two real reasons you still want to drink; how habits create automatic cravings (even when you don’t consciously want alcohol); how your beliefs about alcohol fuel desire; how to start rewiring your brain so the desire begins to fade. This is the work that leads to real freedom—not just white-knuckling or relying on willpower, but getting to a place where you genuinely stop wanting alcohol. 56. Sober Sex Is Better

    Do you feel like you need a drink to relax, feel confident, or get in the mood for sex? You’re not alone. For many people, alcohol and sex are deeply linked. It’s the thing that takes the edge off, quiets the inner critic, and makes it easier to stop overthinking. But what if alcohol isn’t actually improving the experience the way you think it is? In this episode, I break down what alcohol is really doing in those moments—and why it might be getting in the way of the connection, confidence, and pleasure you’re actually looking for. We’ll talk about: why alcohol can feel like it helps; what alcohol actually does to your mind and body during intimacy; the hidden costs of relying on “liquid courage” in the bedroom; why sober sex can actually be more satisfying; and how to start getting more comfortable with intimacy without alcohol. Because feeling less self-conscious is not the same thing as feeling more connected. 55. Is Alcohol Sabotaging Your Weight and Fitness Goals?

    If you’re trying to eat well, exercise regularly, or feel better in your body—but you’re still drinking alcohol—this episode might explain why things feel harder than they should. Because here’s what no one really talks about: We track our steps, optimize our workouts, obsess over protein, sleep, and supplements… but somehow alcohol gets a free pass. I break down what’s actually happening in your body when you drink—and how it can quietly interfere with your goals. We’ll talk about: why alcohol adds more than just calories to your day; how your body prioritizes processing alcohol over fat burning; why drinking makes you more likely to eat more (and care less about what you eat); how alcohol affects your energy, endurance, and muscle recovery; and the hidden role sleep plays in all of this. Because it’s not just about what’s in your glass. It’s about what alcohol is doing behind the scenes—and why you might not be getting the full benefit of the effort you’re already putting in.
