Working With Your Brain: Money, ADHD & Dopamine, with Jessica Bayers

Jessica Bayers is the founder of Bougie on a Budget, a neuroscience-informed personal finance educator helping people build financial stability without shame, discipline lectures, or another app that doesn't stick. Did you know dopamine doesn't just drive cravings? It also shapes your working memory, motivation, attention, and the habits you build around money. Jessica joins Nick and Moraya to kick off Season 3 with the neuroscience of ADHD, avoidance, and financial shame, and why a set of pans in a Target aisle can carry someone's whole identity. Jessica's #1 tip: start at done. Before you touch your to-do list, ask what one thing, if nothing else got done today, would actually count. Everything else can wait. In this episode: the ADHD dopamine gap, why budgeting alone never sticks, and the nervous system science behind financial avoidance. 🎧 Go deeper: Jessica Bayers, Bougie on a Budget → TikTok @imbougieonabudget · IG @im_bougieonabudget · hello@imbougieonabudget.com Her workshop, Breaking Out of Survival Mode → https://claude.ai/public/artifacts/e280f53e-deaf-41f5-8a82-97047b9deb05 Free for advisors + therapists, The Practitioner in the Room, Sept 24 → https://luma.com/r6obl4ve?tk=KscDLD HomeEc → IG @homeecpod Calibrate → IG @calibrate_app · linkedin.com/company/calibrateeq Got a topic for Season 3? moraya@calibrateeq.com This podcast is for educational and informational purposes only. Money Together ft. authors Heather & Douglas Boneparth

Heather and Doug Boneparth run Bone Fide Wealth together, write a weekly substack The Joint Account, authored the book Money Together and are married with two daughters. Doug is a Certified Financial Planner and active funny meme creator and Heather is a lawyer, writer on love, money and family. In this episode, Moraya and Nick get into the real story behind Money Together: growing up with different money worlds, and they formed two different relationships to money, attachment, and belonging. Q: Can two partners handle money completely differently and still be a strong team? Yes. Heather and Doug describe reaching the same outcome through different math, "7 + 3 = 10, and 5 + 5 = 10." Their Calibrate Couples Mirror showed they share some of the same core challenges but lean on different strengths to work through them, they make a whole pie. As they beautifully write in their book, you expand and make room for your partner. Q: What's one financial gesture that can carry more meaning than its dollar value? Doug co-signed the refinance of Heather's $200k student loans after they were married. For Heather, it wasn't really about the loan, it meant "your burdens are my burdens." Their secure attachment helped heal deep shame. Q: Why should financial advisors treat both partners as equal decision makers? As Heather puts it in the episode and shouts in their book "caregivers are providers too." Advisors who only engage the higher earner miss the full financial picture, and the overlooked partner's wellbeing often suffers for it. And something we preach at Calibrate this creates more risk as families age and life can change fast. Q: Where do adult money patterns actually come from? Shaped in childhood. Both Heather and Doug trace their financial instincts, her drive for independence, his belief that any setback is fixable, back to money messages from their families long before they met. Both now have divorced parents and they share stories in their book. We give it a 10/10 and recommend reading their stories and the many diverse couples stories they share. Before recording, Heather and Doug took the Calibrate assessment. Moraya reflects on their individual results and Couples Mirror in a longer blog post at homeecpodcast.com. Curious how your strengths compare with your partner's? Take the free Calibrate assessment. It takes about 10 minutes because it’s not a buzzfeed quiz – it’s actual behavioral science. The Upside Down of Economic Mobility

Episode Description: Most of us are walking around with loss in our bodies, sometimes acute, sometimes old, sometimes unnamed, yet we're still expected to perform, navigate change, and make decisions like nothing happened. What if the thing blocking someone's progress isn't motivation or discipline, but capacity?. In this episode of Home Ec, hosts Nick Ashburn and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Moraya Seeger DeGeare sit down with Michael O'Bryan, Executive Director of the Wealth and Work Futures Lab. Together, they sit inside a set of ideas that will completely change how you understand economic mobility. Instead of viewing financial success as a story about individual effort, they explore it as a story about conditions. What’s been lost, what’s never been provided, and what people are asked to carry anyway. About Our Guest: Michael O'Bryan is the Executive Director of the Wealth and Work Futures Lab based at Drexel University's Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation. The lab brings together employers, policymakers, and communities to transform how economic mobility is framed and fostered, specifically studying the impacts of grief and loss on workforce development. He is also founder and CEO of Human Nature, a management consulting firm with a mission of putting humanity at the heart of every organization. Money Psychology & The Calibrate Assessment: So much of our financial life isn't about financial information. Wallet Dysmorphia: Why Money Feels Scarier Than It Is During Life Change

You don’t need more advice thrown at you. You need someone who can stay with you. When everything is changing, you don’t need another expert telling you what to do. You need someone who can stay with you in the uncertainty and help you make decisions without rushing, shaming, or overwhelming you. In this episode of Home Ec, hosts Nick Ashburn and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Moraya Seeger DeGeare sit down with Josh Dunlop, founder of Even Path, to explore what real financial support looks like during high-stakes life transitions like divorce, retirement, loss, and complex family change. Josh explains why he prefers the word guidance over advice. Advice creates a power dynamic. Guidance is collaborative. It is someone walking with you when you feel activated, isolated, and unsure what comes first. We talk about what clients often look like when they arrive: burned out, overwhelmed, and late to asking for help. Josh shares how avoidance compounds stress, and how creating structure and executive support in high-pressure moments can lower anxiety and restore confidence. We also explore what people are really fighting for in divorce and major transitions: not just money, but balance, safety, dignity, and the need to feel whole again. Josh introduces a concept he is developing called wallet dysmorphia, describing how trauma can distort someone’s perception of their financial reality even when the numbers are stable. Often, the person least able to assess the situation clearly is the one living inside the upheaval. In this episode Guidance vs advice and why the difference matters in transition What being “activated” looks like in divorce and major life change Why structure lowers panic and helps people regain footing How grief and identity loss shape financial positions Wallet dysmorphia and the gap between feelings and facts About Josh and Even Path Josh Dunlop is a financial advisor and the founder of Even Path, a fee-only practice (no commissions, no product sales). He is a CFP, CDFA, and a board member of the Financial Therapy Association. Couples and Money: Trust, Play and Staying Connected

Money rarely causes conflict for couples because of the numbers alone. It creates tension because it touches safety, trust, fairness, curiosity and the question couples rarely say out loud, even when they feel it: “Am I alone in this?” Like sex, honest money talks with our partners ask for self-awareness, emotional risk, and a willingness to be imperfect together. In this episode of HomeEc, Nick Ashburn and Moraya Seeger DeGeare sit down with Couples Therapist Renee Segal to explore why money conversations between partners can feel so charged, how couples therapists navigate money tension in the therapy room, and her own money story. To utilize the podcast with your own insights start with the free 15 minute Calibrate Assessment Key Terms Attachment describes how we learn to seek safety, connection, and reassurance, especially when we’re stressed or uncertain. Knowing Better Isn’t the Blocker to Doing Better

Episode Summary What if your financial history isn’t a knowledge problem or a personal failure, but a nervous system story? In this episode of HomeEc, we sit down with aspiring Rich Auntie Rachel to unpack a year of emotional, relational, and financial transformation that led to one unexpected move: she submitted her Calibrate Growth Profile alongside her mortgage paperwork. She got the mortgage. Financial Therapist Nick Ashburn and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Moraya Seeger DeGeare explore what happens when context meets numbers, when behavior is understood instead of judged, and why “knowing what to do” so often breaks down without safety, regulation, and support. This episode challenges the idea that financial success is about discipline alone and asks a bigger question: what would change if lenders and advisors understood the human behind the spreadsheet? What We Cover Why knowing better does not automatically lead to doing better Emotional spending as regulation, not moral failure How strengths become blind spots under stress Over-giving as a bid for connection Showing up as an adult versus a younger, activated self How context changes financial behavior What Rachel’s story reveals about credit, care, and trust Why This Episode Matters Rachel’s story shows what becomes possible when self-awareness, therapy, and behavioral insight enter real financial systems. This is not a story about perfection. It is a story about being seen, supported, and regulated enough to follow through. If you have ever felt behind, misunderstood by your numbers, or stuck in patterns you “know better” than to repeat, this episode is for you. Sandwich Generation Series: A Holistic Guide to Senior Care Conversations

Episode Description 📝 Nick and Moraya continue their series on the sandwich generation with an insightful conversation featuring Mindy Mozenter from Senior Living Specialists Philadelphia. While the episode provides concrete steps for senior care planning, it goes beyond typical checklists to explore the deeper emotional terrain of aging and family dynamics. Through candid discussion, they surface often-unspoken challenges: gender roles in caregiving, power dynamics, shame, and the beliefs about not deserving a good life as we age. The conversation offers both practical strategies and emotional wisdom for navigating these difficult but essential family discussions. Guest Expert 🎤 Mindy Mozenter - Senior Living Specialists (Philadelphia) 16 years of experience working with seniors Serves on nonprofit boards that align with her purpose, focused on senior care and arts in dementia 🥘 Key Insights: Essential Planning Steps 📋 Establish Power of Attorney (medical and financial) Create emergency contacts and "What If" scenarios Document passwords and financial information Assess home safety and mobility needs Quality of Life & Purpose ❤️ Maintain engagement through community involvement and purpose. Consider physical and emotional therapy for both health and social connection A Beautiful Connection: During our conversation about maintaining purpose while aging, we discovered Mindy's connection to Clearwater, the environmental non-profit Moraya's grandparents (Pete and Toshi Seeger) started in the 1960s - a reminder that meaningful connections can emerge even in difficult conversations about aging, the universe will give us a sign, wink, or even a laugh if we are willing to listen. As Mindy shares what a force of nature Toshi was. Memorable Quotes 💭 From Mindy: "Be their kid again, not their caregiver. You want to go there and have a conversation, say 'Dad, tell me about where your parents came from in Ireland' [...] Not like, 'Did you bathe today?'" "How small has your world gotten?" From Nick: "Beyond checklist goals, we need to understand their 'why' - their higher purpose and identity. It goes to 'I love you, I'm a loving parent, I'm a loving child.' When we start from these internal values, that's where the real conversations begin." From Moraya: "We need purpose not just in these big career related moments, we need that to age well - engagement, education, and purpose."
