HGB Halloween Special 2026 - History of the Guillotine

Happy Halloween Spookies! Welcome to the HGB Halloween Special for 2026. Our Halloween specials have covered a favorite of topics from the history of certain elements of Halloween like craving pumpkins and trick or treating to clowns to the history of Disney's Haunted Mansion to the history of haunted attractions to vintage Halloween decor to horror hosts to 1980s Halloween horror movies and so much more. We have a very cool interview for this special as we explore the history of the guillotine through the black comedy/horror/pseudo documentary film named Guillotine with the co-writer, producer and director of that film, Iranian-American Filmmaker Ray Izad-Mehr. You can watch Guillotine on Amazon Prime or TUBI and we believe you are going to enjoy it! Film synopsis: The guillotine was built on the ideals of The Enlightenment, an attempt to instill grace to an otherwise brutal expression of justice. Told through the lens of 5 true tales, we explore the Guillotine's role in history, from The French Revolution to the Fall of Saddam Hussein. At times humorous and ironic, poignant and thoughtful, these stories also reflect the morality of their times, tracing the philosophical attitudes about capital punishment, and the power structure that allows it to be. From a necessary evil to cold-blooded amusement, the blade falls with no less detachment. Ep. 661 - History of Poltergeists

Poltergeists can be really bothersome spirits. Rather than just appearing out of the corner of our eyes or leaving a dime on the windowsill or unmaking the bed, they usually play pranks and enjoy scaring people. Poltergeist stories are always tough to believe because the activity is so intense, it's hard to believe. But even more fascinating are the evolving theories about what is behind the phenomenon. On this episode, we're traveling through centuries of strange disturbances, terrified families, baffled investigators, and some of the most famous poltergeist accounts in history. We'll explore the stories, examine the evidence, and follow the changing theories about what — or who — might be responsible for things that move when no one touches them. Because the history of the poltergeist isn't just a history of things that go bump in the night. It's also a history of how we try to explain the things that frighten us most. So turn down the lights, settle in, and keep an ear out for any unexplained noises nearby. Because this time, when something goes bump in the night, we're going to ask a different question. What if it isn't a ghost? This Month in History features Orson Welles' War of the Worlds. Stones and Bones Ep. 25 - Sleepy Hollow Cemeteries

We couldn't think of better cemeteries to explore before Halloween than the two located in Sleepy Hollow, New York. We visited both in 2022 and highly recommend that everyone peruse them at least once in their lifetime. One cemetery is the Old Dutch Burying Ground that is situated next to the Old Dutch Church. The other cemetery is the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, which was originally named Tarrytown Cemetery as Sleepy Hollow only became an official village name in 1996. There are many notable people at final rest in both cemeteries. Intro and Outro music "Stones and Bones" was written and produced by History Goes Bump and any use is strictly prohibited. Ep. 660 - Haunted Cemeteries 32

Cemeteries are some of our favorite locations and when they are haunted, it's like they are wrapped in a giant purple bow. Some are just little rural knockabout places with few burials. Others are large cemeteries with grand mausoleums. Some have legends that lean more towards the invented, while others have videos confirming that shadowy figures wander through the tombstones. All of them honor the dead, which may be why spirits are comfortable hanging out in them. Join us for Haunted Cemeteries #32! The Moment in Oddity features Burro Schmidt Tunnel. Tranquille Sanatorium Redux

We've heard people say that Tranquille Sanatorium was the good and the scary, all mixed together. This is a perfect description for this complex on the outskirts of Kamloops, British Columbia. The property was once a thriving self-sufficient city for the sick. It eventually housed the physically challenged and those with mental health issues. The grounds were beautiful and when we first recorded an episode about this location in 2016, there were attempts to revitalize the property. A farm moved in for awhile, but that is closed and a developer has just let the property go to waste. It is private property and has security, so there are no ghost hunts hosted there. Despite the basic abandonment, spirits continue to knock about the place. The years of loneliness and sadness seem to have been absorbed into the environment. Join us for the history and hauntings of Tranquille Sanatorium. Ep. 659 - The Black Jail and Other Haunts of Guthrie

An abandoned and decaying building in Guthrie, Oklahoma has served a number of purposes throughout its history. This started as the Black Jail and then became a place of worship for the Nazarene Church. Then it was a social club before a cult known as the Samaritan Foundation made this their headquarters. And then there was the murder. It's no wonder that people say the place is haunted. Guthrie has a couple of other haunted locations as well including a train depot, theater and former saloon. Join us for the history and hauntings of the Black Jail and other haunts of Guthrie. This Month in History features the Sweetest Day. Phantasmal Crime Ep. 61 - Ouija Board Murders

The Ouija board today is marketed as a harmless game. Most people believe that the boards don't do anything. For those that believe that communication can be established, they sit on two sides: the subconscious is controlling the communication or there is an unseen entity controlling the planchette that is flying across the board. Ouija boards get really interesting when they become integral parts of true crime cases. On this episode, we talk about several murder cases with Ouija boards involved. As we have found from our episodes featuring ghost towns and locations in the desert of California, Nevada and Arizona, the desert is a strange and mysterious place. There is a home in Desert Center, California that seems to be sitting on a vortex created by the convergence of three deserts. The owner of this home is a woman named Daphne Minks and from the moment she stepped inside of it, she knew she wasn't alone. As she set about repairing and renovating the house, she felt as though unseen entities were helping her. She named this home Vortex 29 and she joins us on this episode to share her experiences. County Durham has a deep mining and farming heritage and is located in the northeast part of England near Scotland. This is the only English county prefixed with the word "County." Ep. 656 - Haunted Beaufort County

Beaufort County is a typical southern coastal area with old live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and antebellum architecture. The county incorporates 68 islands that include Port Royal Island, Fripp Island, St. Helena Island, Lady's Island, Parris Island and Hilton Head Island. These are part of the Sea Islands that stretch from South Carolina to upper Florida. Beaufort County sits in the heart of the Lowcountry and Gullah Geechee culture and Civil War sites and historic buildings are very much a part of the area and this has led to ghost stories. Queen's Park Redux

Canada had an early park movement that spanned from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Queen's Park in Toronto was one of the parks that came out of that movement. Within it's borders, it holds the magnificent legislative building. The park is encircled by the city that grew up around it and enjoyed by many. Some of those that enjoy the park are doing so in the afterlife. There are at least five spirits that have been encountered at the Legislative Building. There was another building here before the government structure, an asylum. Do the ghosts of the past haunt the marble hallways of this place? Ghost Tours, Consciousness and Reptiles with Tim Nealon of Ghost City Tours

Paranormal Conversations are random, off-the-cuff discussions on all things paranormal. On this 28th Paranormal Conversation, we are joined by entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Ghost City Tours and the host of the Ghost City Podcast, Tim Nealon. Tim has a passion and respect for history and a fascination with the paranormal and he has used this to realize his vision of a tour company with integrity and authenticity that hosts hundreds of thousands of guests every year in multiple cities across America. We discussed a variety of things including: Tim's haunted house where he has experienced frequent EVPs, disembodied voices, old-fashioned piano music, recurring shadow figures and a physical encounter with a candle. His property was part of a former plantation and lies along a route associated with Andrew Jackson's movement during the War of 1812 and he has found historical artifacts. We talk about ghost tourism and his company Ghost City Tours and the importance of historical research, accurate storytelling, and respect for the people and communities represented on its tours. It was important for us to differentiate his national company from another national company that seems to be ruining the industry and has been facing litigation. Discussing what a ghost is takes a down a fascinating road with Tim's speculative theory that consciousness is a universal field received by the brain and that consciousness persists after death, possibly leading to some paranormal encounters. We discuss Jungian synchronicity, simulation theories, and the possibility that investigators' attention or intent contributes to hauntings. For several years, Tim managed Old South Pittsburg Hospital and he shares some of the experiences people have had with EVPs, disembodied voices, and shadow figures. He also identified one area as having a more negative atmosphere, without labeling it demonic. Tim also shares his most intense experience, which happened at the hospital as well. It's pretty crazy! Kelly had a similar experience at the Exchange Hotel in Virginia with gunpowder smells, a copper taste, and severe tinnitus and Tim proposed that the brain may interpret unusual signals as specific sensory experiences, while acknowledging that the underlying process is not understood. And we finish up talking reptiles and we throw in a video of Kelly handling a snake in the wild getting snake bitten and all. This was a great conversation that you won't want to miss! The Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio is a charming home that is now a museum and meeting place for those with literary interests. There is a tragic and haunted history to the abode. Phantasmal Crime Ep. 60 - Did Ghost Of Teresita Basa Solve Her Murder?

The headline from the Chicago Tribune asked, "Did voice from grave finger murder suspect?" The question is startling, implying that a ghost solved a murder case.
